201  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the chances BTC is replaced by something better soon? on: February 06, 2014, 02:53:04 PM
I don't think that any coin will replace bitcoin...it is more a matter of which coin can work best alongside bitcoin.  Up until this point, it looks like it will be litecoin because of the faster transaction times, and the adoption slowly getting picked up by merchants.   It is seemingly like 2 years on bitcoin's tail...

I believe bitcoin will be replaced sooner than most of you think. There are many reasons its not good enough

Ok I agree its not a scam but it is centralized .

Do you think people new to cryptocurrency would prefer Ripple though over Bitcoin or altcoins?

There are technically better ones out there right now
Which one? I see only competitor which copy the idea and put it in a new gift wrap paper, give a new name and change some terms, but below the line there are only Bitcoin clones.

The only one which are complete different are the pre mined one like ripple e.g., but exactly the difference make ripple not attractive for the Bitcoin comunity, who lost the trust in centralized and controlled currency.

what about electrum and many others?
clearly you dont /want to/ know the other altcoins
211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to pay safely with btc? The site only offers BitPay payment http://www.progr on: February 05, 2014, 06:35:11 PM
Bitpay is safe but idk about that site
Lol you're heads on wrong

Ive been to bitpay and searchengined and all was about how to enable your site to accept bitpay.
Instead of how to pay with bitpay accepting sites

You don't, you use a wallet

oh ok so what is the way to pay to em? I cant find anything other than bitpay.
I think i dont understand this completely.. Sad

If you want to remain anonymous Bitcoin is not for you.

Encryption had been around for a long time before the first papers on the idea of making a cryptocurrency were written back in the late '90s. Then, it was more time before the "theory" was developed enough so that someone could actually develop the software. Then the software had to be developed.

Even with manufacturers adding hardware to all the new motherboards so that the NSA can spy on everyone right at their source, their home computer, people will still figure ways around this. For example, there are methods, right now, for printing graphene microchips on plastic film. With the advent of the 3D printer, we will all be making our own computers, right at home, in a few short years from now.

Anonymity is not necessarily being hidden. It might be something like the Matrix movies - hidden because of similarities to everyone else in the crowd. There just might come a time when there is enough garbage info broadcasted out there that even a quantum computer will not be able to sift through it all. That is anonymity.

Smiley

I wouldnt be surprised if every electronic device had something to spy on its user.I dont agree though with

"It might be something like the Matrix movies - hidden because of similarities to everyone else in the crowd. There just might come a time when there is enough garbage info broadcasted out there that even a quantum computer will not be able to sift through it all. That is anonymity."

because you dont have to know everything possible about everyone to identify anyone. So I guess a quantum computer wo/uld/nt be really needed to do that

If the number is so important why cant we replace the lost coins?

Because it would undermine confidence in BTC and it's not necessary at all. Just split them up!

how would it undermine confidence if the coins will not be undermined but just mined?
215  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the chances BTC is replaced by something better soon? on: February 05, 2014, 03:14:28 PM
Incorrect. It''s simple to add more granularity to Bitcoin. Once the total supply of coins is down to 2.1 million, then we can just add another decimal place and we're back to 21 million units.

Is this true? Like a stock split at 10:1 where everyone suddenly has 10x as many bitcoins? Or as in making the smallest unit 0.1 satoshi?

Dividing the satoshi doesn't change anything I've said.. it just makes the lost coins 10x larger in satoshi magnitude as well. Eventually all of them will not be in control of anyone, and the currency will be dead. Don't get me wrong, this is still a long way off, but there's nothing that can be done to recover lost coins. Inflation is probably the only thing that can counter the lost coins, but that's not bitcoin anymore.

Or, there could be 18.9 millions units left to mine, basically resetting the number of coins mined

Simply adding more decimal places is a perfect solution, because it preserves the relative wealth of everyone, while completely fixing the "running out of granularity" problem. Adding more units to mine is basically theft from existing bitcoin holders.

thethingis: Running out of coins only makes sense in terms of running out of atomic units. If 5% of coins are lost ever year, and more decimal places are added to Bitcoin whenever the total number of units drops below some value, then we will never run out of coins. Try to work through some examples and you'll see why you should not worry about this.

Yes, thethingis, this is really no issue to worry about.

You should be glad about every BTC taken out of the game, because it gives your BTC a little bit more value.

Why 21 milion bitcoin wre meant to be in use? If the number is so important why cant we replace the lost coins?

Have you ever considered your lack of privacy when using BTC ? (Or any other cryptocurrency?)
Do I really need to explain your lack of privacy? Think yourself.

Ok if you havent found anything then:blockchain is a log of all btc transactions ever.
Its not hard to identify anyone who doesnt take al the needed steps to make their address remain anonymous.Think AGAIN
The more is known about you (like what you bought with that address) the more singled out you can be from everyone which means less anon.

With physical money it isnt that easy to know everything every person ever bought.

Im sorry if I misunderstood something but bitcoin wiki has:
Quote
A block chain is a transaction database shared by all nodes participating in a system based on the Bitcoin protocol. A full copy of a currency's block chain contains every transaction ever executed in the currency.

Ok.  What are all the things I've bought with bitcoin?

The reality of privacy is somewhere in between cash and credit cards, but I think its much closer to cash.  Also, please consider that today's cycle: exchange->purchase->exchange makes identification much easier since people are identified at the exchange.  But as Bitcoin becomes more popular and is sent person-2-person like cash it will become more like cash WRT privacy because it will be very hard to trace a chain of 20 transfers (you have to ask all 20 individuals who they sent it to) to find the 21st.

But of course if some address in the chain of transfers is also used to receive money from an exchange, then a short-cut exists.  So the difficulty to trace really is the shortest path from the transaction in question to an exchange.

yes the difficulty to trace really is the shortest path from the transaction in question to an exchange. But other exist like your location and phone you paid with. Also what you bought with crypto identifies you anyway.Whatever has enough info about every single person can identify every single person's crypto address
217  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: petahash asic offer: SOLVED on: February 05, 2014, 02:28:29 PM

Just buy an old brewery or something and fill it with antminers or such Smiley

http://www.pbmining.com  is one of the best posted on this forum, they pay out on schedule.   Downside :  they're down.  Some website functions are available but there is no buy in ... and it's starting to look bad for buy-ins at lower GH, as they are limited in supply.

https://bit-mining.co looks interestingish... I have only -just- seen them and have no experience with their service yet.

good sources dry up fast... scammers abound with all kinds of strategies.  DOGE is starting to look better ALL the time.

If the odds are good :  the goods are odd.

bitmining.co is reported as untrusted connection by FF
pbmining.com is 403 forbidden so I guess you are right
