but I don't exactly see it that way because each mining node is competing against all the others.
There is no competition. Every hash found has an equal chance of matching or exceeding current difficulty, which is around 39.5 Billion. If there's no competition, then why am I not solving ALL of the blocks? Besides this, more importantly, each hash (ie difficulty of 1) has the same probability of solving the block as 1/1024 of a miner hashing at difficulty of 1024 (accepted share with difficulty 1024)? And when my miner has difficulty set, there are no accepted shares below that difficulty. So I'm assuming that 934/1024 doesn't show up, because it's not accepted. My understanding is that 1024 is a larger fraction of 39.5B to be solved. Competition is not against the other miners, but against... Well... Probability. There's no competition actually, only probability. A hash of difficulty 1 has no chance of solving a block of difficulty 39B. A hash of diff 39B or more can "solve" it. Your miner submits hashes to a pool just to prove to the pool that your miner is working. Otherwise, you shouldn't have to submit shares below the current network difficulty. When you solo mine (not in a pool), you don't need to submit hashes below the difficulty. Pool diff and network diff are two different things about the same concept of the "target". It actually took me some time to understand this! :-)

Hi there!
I have some S4 running at BTCGuild (2048 diff) and some at another pool (around 1700 diff, varying). The ones at Guild are all showing zero bestshare, the ones at the other pool are showing actual bestshare values. Hash rate seems good, better actually at BTCGuild than the other pool. Does anyone have an idea what could be the bestshare problem?
Thanks!
It's an Antminer bug. All of them after the S1 don't show best share if the difficulty is a factor of 2, say 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, etc. M Isn't best share just an indicator of how 'close' your random chance got to finding a block? Is there another use for it? It's a fun stat to have. We bet on which of our miners is going to get closest to the current target and making games with it. Beers and shots are in play, it's serious fun. ;-) And it's an indicator on the normal performance of the miners.

I think all possible diff values we can set at BTCGuild are factors of 2. I wonder if the bestshare value kept by the Antminer is in fact managed by cgminer. I'm sure CK knows about it. Anyway, thanks for the info M. Btw, nice work with your MMinerMonitor. Kexkey

I could not make my S4 boot itself to hashing without fan1 plugged. I have to unplug one of my S1's fan and connect it to my S4's fan1 connector so that it boots correctly. Maybe something's wrong with my S4 but it won't mine with a missing fan.
Now I'm looking for a compatible fan online, since Bitmain asked me to buy a new unit to get a new fan.
Have you tried swapping the fan cables over so fan1 is connected? Interesting, I will try it. Thanks for the suggestion! Hey Dogie, just wanted to tell you that swapping the fans so that fan4 is not connected did the trick! Thanks for suggesting! Kexkey

S4 -B2 sold out. Maybe next generation is coming soon? Already?
Black Friday deal is still on though...

Hey there, does anyone know when the Black Friday Deal on the S4 (16 S4 pack) ends?
Thanks!

Hello, nice product. Can you please add support for S4??
Thanks
Hello, it should work as an S2. I've asked Bitmain for a demo unit, and they've declined. It's unlikely I'll be obtaining one anytime soon. M I can confirm that the S4 works as an S3 in the software. The only thing that is a little bit annoying is the alerts that are not in the same range, but it's ok. Thanks Mdude! Kexkey

My miner perfect work at a frequency of 268.75 - 275, and outputs the 2500-2700 ghesh
Seriously? I tried it and the S4 kept rebooting. I was lucky to be able to switch back frequency during the 3 second window, after the web server is up and before the reboot. I would not recommend it, definitely.

... They also pay per share so your not waiting on the pool to find a block to get paid,, they pay every 2 hrs per share,, and they are paying 10% OVER as a bonus.
Curious... How can they pay 10% over? Where do they get the extra 10% bitcoins? Thanks for the info!

If its a front fan then try running without it, S4s are quite significantly overcooled. If its a rear fan, swap it out with one of the front fans. Temps <60C are fine.
Will it run without the fans plugged in? Because, if the S4 can run without the front fans plugged in, I can live with <65C and reduce the noise by half! Edit: Or even switch the rear fans to the Deltas.. wondering if it will work... hmm.... I believe so, yes. I could not make my S4 boot itself to hashing without fan1 plugged. I have to unplug one of my S1's fan and connect it to my S4's fan1 connector so that it boots correctly. Maybe something's wrong with my S4 but it won't mine with a missing fan. anyone know where to get fan. Bitmain refuses to send one unless I buy another unit (hostage). I tried a Delta 120 mm 5500 RPM PWM TFC1212DE but it slows down as the others speed up??
Besides terrible customer service, this S4 is a major screw up. I havew other problems but one at a time. Right now I need to get a Fan.,
If you ever find a compatible fan on the web, tell me. I looked for one on Amazon, eBay, and a lot of sites but it's not like it's obvious. I almost bought the Delta you're talking about... good thing I didn't. My S4 doesn't want to start hashing if fan1 is not connected or not working. I have to unplug one of my S1's fans and plug it on the S4 to "boot" it, and then unplug it to plug it back on my S1. At first I could just spin the defect fan manually so that the S4 "thinks" it's working... but this trick stopped working. Now my S4 shows 0C on all boards... but it's hashing. Sometimes it shows 80C on one board and then stops hashing. Not sure I understand the pattern.

And for compensation of the lost mining time...
Speaking of which, has anyone actually received compensation in the form of BTC from bitmain? I did, last week! For one s4. It was a nice surprise. How much BTC did you receive from them? Has anyone else been compensated? I'm still waiting on mine. It was something around 0.29 BTC for one s4. Tell me when you get yours.

You guys are lucky.
I'm in Singapore and my chips are running between 58-63C depending of the time of the day....
Well when I keep my S4's, S2's and S1's in the garage, even if it's around 0C (32F) outside, it's 40C in the garage and 64C in the miners! I really have to make a hole in the wall... some kind of dryer output... I have to keep my garage door open even in winter (there's snow outside as of today) -- the neighbours look at me with interrogation points in the eyes. I look at them with Bitcoin's B in the eyes.

Gotta love natural Canadian cooling. And it isn't even winter yet. If you're wondering, temps are showing 0 because S4's temp sensors don't register below 20c. Lol, same thing here, I'm also in Canada and got the s4 out of the house! The heat was not much of a problem compared to the noise, but hey it's now keeping my lawnmower and all-season tires warm, ready for Spring.

Hi there,
I have a defect fan on my S4. Do you know where on the web I'd find a compatible one, same specs?
In the meantime, my S4 won't start mining because it detects a 0-RPM fan. I tried giving it a manual spin and the S4 started hashing. Do you know how I can tell the S4 to mine even if there's a missing fan, without giving it a spin?
I sent an e-mail to Bitmain but thought it would be faster to get one if I order on the web with priority post or something like that. I'm in Canada.
Thanks!
I got the fan specs from bitmain sometime back as I wanted to look for quieter fans. These are the specs. http://prntscr.com/56s4gzThanks a lot for the information! I'm waiting for an answer from Bitmain and looking at compatible fans in the meantime.
