201  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [GROUP BUY WORLDWIDE]BTMine v1 Miner 200GH/s - In Stock BTC 2.4 on: January 10, 2014, 10:28:51 PM
Well I have one box they said will ship out tomorrow - crossing my fingers!

When I get it I can provide pictures of it vs ANTMINER.    Antminers are only about the dimensions of two power supplies and draw ~410W from the wall for 200GH.  From the pics it is obvious BTMine's box is going to be massive in comparison.  The power supplies included seem to be 600W and rather cheap (dual rail? ugh)...  So that is why I figured any quality >50A supply would do (I've been buying Corsair 650W off eBay for $40 as I alluded to earlier)  I also have a wattmeter and plan to get actual draw of the BTMine box as soon as it arrives...

202  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon 2 Clone - 200GH/s+ Model Questions on: January 09, 2014, 11:39:38 PM
I've been kicking around the idea of making some changes and the search availability time takes forever and so far have not found anything.

Check out the AVALON ASIC USERS THREAD.  Read all the pages.  You will be an expert.  The design difference between GEN1 & 2 is just a nano-meter shrink, everything stays pretty much the same.

Currently I have one here and 5 more of the BTMiner v1 units on the way.

Cool!  Mine hasn't shipped yet but was supposed to go out yesterday  Sad

So I have been pondering around with the idea of removing the cases #1 to save space and hopefully allow for extra fans to be added easier to pull the excess heat off.

If you wanted naked asics should have bought ANTs  Wink

I have a 5000 sqft shop we work on our cars out and part of it is a "living area" with TV, couches, computers, etc...

Living with Avalons is like living in a datacenter.  As long as you don't mind the jet engine!  Watercooling and swapping to lower speed fans does help that...

Is there anyway to remove the TP-Link portion (so remove OpenWRT period) and run something like rPI or BB Black so I can configure the miners to have open API's and allow me to remotely watch them all in one monitor.  The built in software is good but very limited.  Which is where the idea of changing that came up.

Yep you can run Avalons off rPis... again its all in that master Avalon thread...  But the TP-link is just using cgminer what is required to run the API?

If anyone has done any other mods other than overclocking that would be interested in giving me some tips on this.

Good luck!  With the fan speeds and hardware errors reported in the original BTMine screenshots, I assumed from owning over a dozen Avalons in the past the system is already running pretty close to maximum.  The PCB already has been modified with "shortcut" wires to boost the core voltage (which is what the original watercoolers did to get great first gen boosts), but as this model already has all those mods I'm not sure watercooling will help much as you will start to toast the VRMs way before you hit the thermal limits of the actual chips with watercooling....

Read this watercooling thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=211825.msg2650269#msg2650269

And of course I know it will take a while to read and I already said it, but *really* everything you ever wanted to know is probably somewhere in here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140539.0

Remember stock Gen1 avalons came at 282mhz.  The design was good for OC until about 350mhz range.  Avalon added rear heatsinks to the minis and got 375mhz.  To get over that those shortcut/cheater wires were needed and watercoolers got 400-450mhz.  Now OC'ing a Gen2 will be a bit different, but with the massive heatsinks and cheater wires included, I do theorize those BTMine units are already being sold near their maximum limit.  Just my $0.02, if you get around to modding please update this thread and let us know!
203  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Mining Machines on: January 09, 2014, 11:07:20 PM

...CH a veteran miner with miners in hand and actual data on BTC ROI is telling you on all the machines he bought he would have had more BTC in hand by buying and holding than mining, and if you want more real maths historical data has shown buying and holding has been significantly more profitable for 99.9% of miners than buying a miner and mining.

While nothing you said is incorrect as I too have been bitten by bad miner investments - the real killer CH referrs to has been preorders where you lock in a BTC/$ ratio early then get a miner much much later than promised ...

Sucks to spend over 100BTC on a BFL only for it to arrive nearly a year later and only mine a small fraction of that.  But if we would have all known the prices would go up by a few thousand % of course we would all have behaved very differently.

Buying in-hand miners that can ROI maybe 40days out (or less sometimes with altcoins as pointed out) is a much better idea, and if you can resell it (*cough* eBay) before it becomes too devalued it can provide a nice little extra profit.  But basically this comes down to:  importing/reselling can be more profitable than holding gear past its useful life, but then you are relying a greater fool to buy it down the road and accepting a lot of risk (paypal cracking down on BTC, freezing accounts, etc)...
204  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Selling my mining gear. 270GH/s worth on: January 09, 2014, 09:53:57 PM
Current offer is BTC4

Short version is we are just a few days away from the next diff jump.

Take that offer!  I recently bought a 220GH Avalon for 2.2BTC...

You are good then the 24pin molex was towards running a single power supply.  Smiley

So for each board you need 1 24pin molex and 2x6 pcie and 1x8pcie?

No from having an old Avalon and going by memory by looking at the additional pics uploaded, the (top) power board takes:

1x-24pin mobo
1x-8pin mobo (thought it might take 2x, the old Avalon design could but only see one in the pics)
2x-8pin pci-e

I assume the second (lower) power board one would match.  But you should be able to get by with substituting 6pin for 8pin pci-e and even leaving one of the 8pin mobo connectors just @ 4pin if needed and you should still get enough power.  The Avalon design was good for 1000W per board/PS, but I would expect with these including 600W supplies you could get by just plugging in all that you can from your PS... (just dont do what one original Avalon owner did:  kept a unit up overnight after receiving it before it toasted using ONLY the 24-pin mobo connector and not plugging anything else in!  Fun fact:  I bought one of the modules from him and it worked just fine...)

Also I remember those RED WIRES from the original Avalon thread.  They were needed to beef up the reference design core voltage on the chip and to allow for clock speeds >375mhz or so (I specifically remember the first guy to watercool them and go 450MHZ on classic Avalons had to do that...)

I ended up grabbing a couple Corsair 650W power supplies as that is a much cheaper option than a single 1300W unit (650 for $40 each, bought my last Rosewill 1300 for $170, LOL @ trying to find that deal now - damn GPU altcoin craze has pretty much bought out the high end PS market!).

My unboxing pictures.
The Miner runs faster than Expects.

Wow, wtf?!?!? according to that PSU, its not capable of 120v at all... is this correct? .. I thought it was a normal full range unit (110-240v)
...
Quote from: Newegg.cn / Google Translate
●The server version of Intel EPS 12V 2.92 standards, backward compatible with smart modular design, intelligent identification into the electrical equipment, without judgment, plug rated power 600W, powerful dual +12 V output design, output power up to 540W
● Active PFC wide (170V-264V) designed for grid energy efficiency up to 99%
● In a typical load, the conversion efficiency up to 85% energy saving, environmental protection, more power ● leading two-transistor forward, effectively reducing switch losses and improve the power efficiency ● 2 ounces of whole server plate design, effectively reduce PCB board losses and improve efficiency ● 12CM ultra-quiet fan with temperature control circuit design, low noise, long life ● equipped with long cables to support the power under the home and backplane traces, to meet the needs of gamers

This PSU looks like a POS group regulated design with similar efficiency to old FSP/Sparkle 2006 designs (OCZ GameXStream, FSP Epsilon, etc.)
Plus it's only rated 540w, and these sell for what looks like $35-50 in bulk.

Ah, so probably best to order w/o PSU =) ... good to know

Yes but I think we need some clarification on how to plug in the power supply.  If you are using one supply it will be different than two.  I had a bunch of first gen Avalons, and the idea was to plug in as much power as possible.  But these appear to have two power distribution boards, and the PSU connector can only go to one...

Any chance of a closeup set of shots showing the power board clearly?
207  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: COLOSED [GROUP BUY6] Happy New Year Giveaway Bitmain Antminer S1 180GH 3 BTC on: January 07, 2014, 08:49:09 PM
Anyone know how many of these can go on a normal 110v 15a circuit? Not sure if it is worth wiring another circuit in my apt building to buy bulk next time.

Mine use about 370W stock or 410W overclocked from the wall measured with a Kill-a-watt.

So you should be able to get 3 on a 15A circuit with no other loads.  I wouldn't do 4!  (but 4 would fit fine on a 20A!)

Source:  I wired in 5-20A circuits and have the 2.2TH of Fury & ANTs running....

I'll take one via paypal.  How fast of shipping to USA ZIP 99354?

when you paid after in 2 days will be shipped, about 4 days will be your home.

Paid for one, thanks!

Quick Question:  What is actual draw with WATT METER?

Two power supplies required correct?  Must be two?  Or can I use a single 1300W?

WOW these shipped on 12/30 from China!  Amazing!

For those of you having trouble, sign up for "My UPS", then "UPS My Choice"... wait a bit (I think they have to load the data via some batchload or something when you create a new account, took a while for mine to show up), login again in a few minutes and then go to the UPS My Choice view (calendar or table view works) to see the incoming shipments.

Thanks SUSHI!

I've seen some pics of newer units... Did they replace the power connectors so you don't have to strip wires?

I beleive they now include a 2" PCI connector lead thats screwed in for you now so that cables need not be butchered

Group buy #2 onwards included the PCI lead on a 2" pigtail.

Newest ANTs actually have the 6-pin PCI-E connector built onto the PCB!!!  Yay!

Dont hate newegg hate AMD. Even the prices on Amazon have increased. I got XFX 290 for 399 now they are 499..  ie in 15 days

Ohhh, no, Newegg is bad for other reasons.

I couldn't imagine buying computer hardware anywhere but NewEgg.

M

+1

Since Amazon is in WA state I get charged sales tax.  Newegg is CA so no tax (for me).  Newegg all day long...

Thermal paste who cares, what I see in this pic is an on-board PCI-E 6pin connector!  WOO Yeah!  No more pigtails!

For what its worth, I got my ANT today, works great, thanks g-ninja!

P.S.  For those of you wondering about power supplies, I tried a Corsiar CX500W and a TX650W and 500W drops a bit low on the 12v rail down to 11.6v  Sad  The 650 stays 12.0v stable.

If I were to order one of the January delivery units today, when would it ship? Beginning or end of January?

They will ship him his order on Jan 4th, and then it takes 2-3 days to get here from China, then another 2-3 days to turn around and ship them to you!  So really it should be just a few days into JAN.

Just got tracking from the ANT I just purchased for DEC delivery, thanks greaterninja!

216  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: SOLD: Avalon 200GH/s - 5 months old - 1200w PSU - UK on: December 26, 2013, 06:56:36 PM
I only posted my reservations because there was no such thing as a 200GH avalon, and to be honest I'm still confused about what you've actually bought.
...
So what exactly have you bought ?

The forums don't have every product.  I think Avalon said screw-it regarding the forums after the last mini fiasco and their accounts being negative feedback for the overall delays.  Their 55nm chip is all over eBay in the same rig config:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.Xavalon+200&_nkw=avalon+200&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I just don't understand how bitfury can be 55nm and very power efficient, while the new Avalons draw over 2x the power of an ANT for same GH?  Somehow Avalons new chip results in the same power draw roughly as BFL's 65nm.   Crazy.

I'll take 7.  Thanks!
218  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast announces specs for new ASIC: 400GH/s on: December 25, 2013, 11:49:45 AM
A slightly OT example: For those following along at home who don't get why HF batch 1 customers are so unhappy about their "october" batch 1 units,  compare: Instead of paying 55 BTC months ago for a 400GH HF batch 1 unit with uncertain delivery they could have sat comfortably on their coin and today ordered 3.1 TH/s of antminer for immediate delivery for the same price (or just got 360GH/s for 6.3 BTC).  Even figuring it in terms of USD, the little antminer devices are lower cost per GH/s than hashfast batch 1 devices which are still not shipping.

*sigh....

Yes I wish I had an early KnC order and a Batch1 Avalon.  But I didn't.  I had a batch 2/3 and same thing happened to that Batch 3.  Still pissed.  At least I didn't have BFL.

In bitcoin mining one in the hand beats two in the bush any day...  Pre-orders are simply fail, even KnC would have been fail if BTC hadn't appreciated....

any updates its been a while since this topic was posted?

I would guess since we are wayy past the deadline to order this offer is no longer good.

But good question!
