Stephen DeMeulenaere: “No need to create any form of constitution or system of self-regulation for crypto market”

CI: What do you think about the initiative of CoinIdol to give the right to vote about the problems to the crypto community?
SD: I think this initiative of CoinIdol is very risky because there are many other cryptocurrency scams out there that are going unpunished. I devote a section of my trainings on spotting scams, as I've had a few friends and colleagues fall victim to them, and as I live in a lower-income country, I don't like to see poor people having their savings taken away from them by scammers.
It's risky from a legal and reputation standpoint. One person's scam can be seen as legitimate by others. Look at the efforts by some to paint Ripple as a scam, whereas I see it as a cryptocurrency with a very different use case and structure than Bitcoin. So CoinIdol takes the risk in trying to act as a source of due diligence when this is what those people who may be investing in such a currency should be doing by themselves.

Ismail Malik claims that he has also been scammed by Jawad, though he had been a part of the Jawad's team during the crowdsale and knows everything from the inside.

2006  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-15]US Customs Agents Access Mobile Phones to Trap Bitcoin Information on: March 15, 2017, 11:39:48 PM
The New US administration under Donald Trump has raised the Border security at customs points when entering the US. Customs agents are searching mobile phones and other electronic devices using a complex algorithm to establish what Bitcoin or any other security info may be contained on the gadget.

The US Customs officials have hiked their game at border security by enforcing access to travellers’ mobile phones. A phone can be seized and analysed for any threat to national security for an amount of time before being given back to the rightful owner.

2007  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-13]Nasdaq:COIN Denied from Regulated Marketing Trading on: March 14, 2017, 08:28:25 AM
The U.S Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have denied the proposal made by the Winklevoss twins, which would have created the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund.

The SEC has denied the Bitcoin ETF proposal that Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have been working on for nearly four years (Nasdaq: COIN). An ETF, viz. Exchange traded fund, is a marketable security that tracks an index, commodity, bond, or a basket of assets like an index fund, that trades like a stock.

"This is setting a dangerous precedent. Imagine if everyone who is paid in bitcoins, for whatever product or service, is checking the source of the funds first and then, if he thinks they were earned through illegal activity, he holds the bitcoins and organizes a public trial. Do we really want bitcoin to be used like that? Bitcoin is about freedom (among many other things)! Freedom to get paid in bitcoins without having to check their origin. Freedom to pay in bitcoins without fear that a merchant (or whoever) will freeze your funds and put you on public trial if he (with or without a sound reason) suspects that your bitcoins might be “dirty”. Let’s use bitcoins freely and let the law enforcement do their job and catch the players who play dirty. It’s not on us to do their job! If we look at the bigger picture, it’s not only about choosing between a “scammer” and a charity, it’s about something much more important. It’s about defending the right to use bitcoins freely. It’s about preserving bitcoin’s fungibility. That’s why Mr. Jawad should get his money back (even if he is a scammer) and that’s why we should never have a trial like this again!
That is my opinion as a member of the jury."  - Aleksandar Matanovic, co-Founder of Serbian Bitcoin Association

Blockchain can be used to fight the corruption. Former Prime Minister of Great Britan David Cameron expressed to Business Insider his interest in the technology, seeing an opportunity to make government processes more clear. The main advantage, he notes, that blockchain is the technology, not the company, and is a former of decentralized database that allows people to edit a shared ledger and will only be edited with the agreement of the majority of parties who use it. 2014  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-03-02] The True Cost of Running a full Bitcoin Node on: March 03, 2017, 05:02:31 PM
Bitcoin’s existence largely depends on how many people are using the peer-to-peer cryptocurrency. A bitcoin node can be an individual miner minting Bitcoins from his laptop or a chain of companies with complex mining rigs mining Bitcoin on a commercial scale. All these nodes keep the Bitcoin network running.

A full node is a program that fully validates transactions and blocks. Almost all full nodes also help the network by accepting transactions and blocks from other full nodes, validating those transactions and blocks, and then relaying them to further full nodes.

Bitcoin nodes also have inbuilt bitcoin wallets for management and usage of funds deposited in the wallet.

What is a Bitcoin Full Node?

2017  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [ARTICLE] Zcash May End The Money Trail on: February 26, 2017, 09:08:09 PM
Zcash, a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency that has complete anonymity on the blockchain, is causing a lot of worries within law enforcement as most agencies think it will harbour illicit transactions.

A US state prosecutor, Kathryn Haun, expressed skepticism regarding claims of the full anonymity of Zcash, emphasizing that if it works as advertised then it would make the prosecutor’s job “a lot more difficult”. Criminals want to be paid, Haun stated in a news interview, therefore agents follow the money, but:
“If we all the sudden omit an entire source of evidence historically available, that will make our job a lot more difficult, definitely.”
