I am using

MM

8411803-14b0f10

https://github.com/Canaan-Creative/avalon8-docs/wiki/AvalonMiner-841-firmware-downloads

is there any newer?

I cooled the garage down from 100f to 89f and since it is warm here in NJ at 3:37pm outdoor temp is 78f

the garage is 89f my hash on the -3 setting is

11888  gh watts are 1122

1122/11888 = 0.09438

My readings are not as good since garage is still warm, but as I run this and temps cool  reading will improve.T

Temperature ©
36/74                  36 reflects an 89f garage temp  but the 74 is very good.

So this miner  will be above spec in a cold spot and below spec in a hot spot.

Since NJ  will be 7 cooler months and 5 warmer months It will work very nicely.

Small update: still running --avalon8-voltage-level +2 with the Delta 2400 PSU 13367.97GHs 34/78c 1320 watts

Nice

If you can try any of the ones below please do.

Marvell2 has a lot of good exhaust fans.

How much power is in your garage?  Are you pulling 200 amps?

I think I remember his setup.
He needs to pull in cool air.
He could bury this and air would be cool

He could do 1 20 foot long feed

No luck despite rentals and some decent hash numbers.

It would be nice to hit a block.

@ yankees

I can't show payments to  MyRig  for 7500 because I have yet to make them.

I also realize showing a $7500 dollar payment  to MyRig for 5 T1's and 5 psu's  would prove that it was sent, but not prove I was not sent the same 7500 back in LTC or ETH or whatever.

I have concentrated on the Avalon 841 lately as I did get one for free when buysolar  was sent to China  avalon said they would send one for free to us.

@ frodo  I know you will most likely delete this  feel free to do as you please.
20246  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My review of Avalon 841 . on: May 01, 2018, 04:34:10 AM
I envy you guys in the US for the cool temps. I'm stuck with 30C all year Sad

Then the T1 May be better. For you.

I am pretty sure I can make the Avalon 841 work for many places in the USA .

But not so sure it works so well for a guy like you other then ac cool it.

So    overnight testing results are good.  I am going to raise room temp  to 96f if possible today

at 90f  which is 4f higher then 86f  max listed

I get okay numbers with the under clock.

note 1317 watts means 5268 watts on a 30 amp pdu  and 30 amp pdus rate 24 amps x 230 volts = 5520 watts.

so this clocking allows  you to run in  a 90f room 4 units to a pdu.

I cranked room temps up more to  96f

Numbers show raising  power to 1368 hash was 12592

and with under clock

13000 hash spec is 12592

1280  watt spec  is 1368

I can't fault the gear  as long as you can do this clock

I am going to keep pushing  gear  and try  to drop more clock in  a 97f room

 --avalon8-voltage-level -3

this is the new test  and should give more protection  against heat

--avalon8-voltage-level +2 -------- megaquake's does help some what
--avalon8-voltage-level -1  --------  works better
--avalon8-voltage-level -2  --------- works better

--avalon8-voltage-level -3  ---------- testing in a 97f room works

hash dropped to   11651  now 12004
watts at 1308
Temperature©

room is 97-98f or 36c

my thoughts are this

The gear can run in a hot room if you down clock it

97f 98f is really hot  and if you don't down clock this gear  it will suck up a lot lot more power and may overheat.

but the lower clocks drop watts a lot.

12004 gh 1308 watts at 97-98 f

--avalon8-voltage-level -3  ---------- testing in a 97f room works

13600 gh 1545 watts at 91f

--avalon8-voltage-level-offset -2 ------- tested results were really bad

I will run for 1 more hour at these 97-98f temps

43 / 84                    Note the 43 reflects a really hot room but the 84 © is okay

So I think  I don't need to check  beyond

--avalon8-voltage-level -3

I will do this up to 2 hours at 97f.
I will then drop temps  to see what I can lower watt use to.
I will move it to the solar array in a day or 2.

this under clock test allows me to say I would tell people the miner is good to use.  if you under clock it in a really hot spot.

12500gh
1326 watts   in a 100f room is really good on the under clock

How much power are you going to get out of your solar setup?  Will it be enough to run one miner at least?

I didn't think the math made any sense for the northeast to bother with solar with costs associated to it (either leasing or buying)

Solar array thread

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1369207.0

we can run 72 amps at 240 volts

the array is almost paid for itself.

New Jersey Is a great state for Solar energy

The array has 20 years left on its warranties.

20249  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My review of Avalon 841 . on: May 01, 2018, 03:27:52 AM
Phil,  great work and vids but you can really make use of the north east cool weather by pointing the intakes to an open window with a small fan (computer case fan) between the intake and the screen of the window for each miner.  The fans will bring in cool air and really run these at low temps.  The miner fans will run 50% or lower (I keep the fans to 50% min just in case)

Soon I will flip the miners around and just blow the hot air out the windows and use your voltage underclocks if need be

Would be great to heat the pool with these

I know lots of ways to cool off the miner when temps are cool.

But if I am to service and help it with breakdowns I need  to push test it.

I got the garage up to 94f using the

--avalon8-voltage-level -1  in the more options slot.

watts were 1406
hash was   12800   this means miner would be okay in my solar array even on a 97f temp summer day.

I am now testing  one setting lower in the same 94f garage note 94f is 8f higher then recommended

--avalon8-voltage-level -2

a few minutes in

watts  1322
hash   12413

this is 0.1065  watts a gh in 94f  and 86f is max suggested.

It will me warm in NJ  78 tomorrow .  I hope to see  if I can get the room to 96f

https://i.imgur.com/omaVuEc.png
https://i.imgur.com/CnGjc4h.png
https://i.imgur.com/KEYmisF.png

the above links show the lower setting which  is keeping watts at 1322 hash at 12413 in a 94 f room.

SOME TIME tomorrow I will get it over 96f and it will run under 1350 watts I hope.
which is pretty good.

people should thank megaquake for finding the path to try tests on if not for him I would have stayed on a path that did not help out.

Whats with this Blake256 algo? Why its delivering the best numbers and its lone got 1 coin on it, decred. Why is decred a lot more productive to mine than some other coin in the market? Is this a dangerous purchase like the X3?

Its lucrative now. Also, in what capacity will everybody hopping on this influence the benefit/trouble? I truly need to purchase a couple yet uncertain how hazardous it is. Need to get more taught. Any assistance is exceptionally valued!

Whenever more asics get added to a network that was dominated by non asic miners (gpu/cpu) difficulty skys and profitability drops significantly.  The problem most people have is using calculators that dont account for future hashpower being added and their eyes light up.  Its a mirage usually, but first batches of these do ok so long as the hardware doesnt flop.

The s11 is on a network that is about 32000tb

That is 8000 of these.

So if they are selling 2000 or 3000 the s11 will make pretty good money.

I too am mining CN7 these days, but switched from Cast to SRBminer. The latter is honestly pretty awesome. Stabler, faster, everything. Give it a whirl if you haven't already... Both my Vega and RX 570 rigs have improved.
Im about to swap one of my friends over to CN7 tonight or tomorrow;  Xevan profits have dwindled, and hes finally started maintaining a XMR wallet....

He has 6 1080's and a few 1080ti's.   Should help with the power bill as well.  I miss mining skein, when the power draw was low and the profits were massive....

yeah  those were nice days. Grin

I just got a small payment for  my Xevan may stop mining it.

So Phil  as you can guess I live in New York, Duchess county.
I am  Blessed with cooler weather from Oct 1 to May 1. I have a garage with 2 exhaust fans so I should be able to stock up on a few of these  run them lower until Oct 1 then crank them up correct?

Exactly so.

As  they will do 12600  for the summer  at 1350 watts. On the lower clock megaquake and I figured out
Then do  13600 for the fall and winter at 1325 watts on the stock clock.

If you are In Florida and like the Miami Marlins they may not be the best choice unless  you are going to use some ac.

It will be warmer tomorrow  I  will push the unit  past the 90f point  to see how high watts go.

--avalon8-voltage-level +2   good helps megaquake's suggestion

--avalon8-voltage-level -1    great helps more  I tested it

--avalon8-voltage-level -2   not tested even better

Have found a solid under clock thanks to megaquake .

see youtube above.

this makes the miner viable if you are not mining in the tropics i.e. constant 80f temps will hurt miner all year round.

I am in NJ USA

7 cooler months means it is better then spec for those 7 cooler months.
5 warmer months it is worse then spec.

avg out to a little better then spec.

if you are in Finland and air cool  it should be fine.

so at the room temp of 86/87  my power use is  terrible it is 1545 watts

If I open all doors  to the outside dropping my room temps  those watts  drop  fast real fast  and hash stays the same.

But this won't work in the summer.  if it is 95f.  today it works as it is 55f.

So I am going to set

--avalon8-voltage-level +1

not --avalon8-voltage-level-offset -2

my reasoning is  that currently 13640 hash at 1545 watts in an 86/87f room is not going to be worth doing.

edit

megaquake's setting does work for me

I get 12968  and watts are 1492  in a warm room of 86/87f

bigger edit

  --avalon8-voltage-level -1

works!!!

oh the machine has turned in to a goddess of under clock yeah baby!

numbers are fucking great.

Going to do a you tube.

megaquake is a fucking genius.  pointed me in the correct direction.

Sent him some merit points.

pretty sure  this setting will protect miner from a hot space during the summer.

So if you air cool  your gear this miner would need the under clock during hot spells

latest you tube   got good results megaquake  is correct his setting works

look how low it is .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvWXJTYrW9o

this should prevent summertime over heating for air cooled farms.

room temp of 67-70f     11900 hash 1178 watts
room temp of 81-82f     12141 hash 1308 watts
room temp of 83-84f     12295 hash 1326 watts  Temperature© 35 / 78   these are safe numbers

room temp of 86f           12591 hash 1348watts Temperature© 37/80    still safe  note the watts per gh are 0.107 spec is 0.099  but 86f is max room temp recommended  I believe with this lower setting you can do more then 86f  this setup is 197 watts less power and hash dropped a about 1000gh.  getting that 1000h and spending 200 watts is not what I would do.

I tested the three below

--avalon8-voltage-level -1   works really well for me.

 --avalon8-voltage-level +1 did not start
 --avalon8-voltage-level +2 works

the key is to get a low one for hot temp days.

I will try

--avalon8-voltage-level -2  just because I think it would bullet proof miner on hottest days we have in NJ
20255  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My review of Avalon 841 . on: April 30, 2018, 04:12:35 PM
My biggest concern would really come down to how the Warranty would be affected by running these miners above the stated 30C.

If the numbers at 30C as printed are only for the benefit of showcasing the optimal performance temperature ranges, then I would have no problem with the Miner. My electrical costs could support the increased usage at the higher temperature ranges. I only get maybe 1 day a year above 40C.

I understand though the concerns for others with Margins being slimmer and overall temperatures being warmer longer.

Good job with all the testing, very informative.

Well these are a no go in the solar array loft

solar array with  heat shield

a more updated video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKlXarvBv5M

I run 3 to 4 f lower then outside temps during the summer.

so  when it gets to 90 or 91f  I would be over the 86f or 30 c recommended.

Even at 82 or 83 f intake air  power use is up more then 110 watts then 67f or 19.4c

Of course when fall comes and temps are under 70f all the time this gear would really be efficient.

I suspect if I could run it in a 50f or 10c room  which I could do for fall and winter  I could get as low as 0.095 watts a gh maybe less.

20256  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My review of Avalon 841 . on: April 30, 2018, 01:51:49 PM
So I read the spec sheet  and it say the gear can be as cold as 0c

You ran as cold as 67f which is 19.4 c

You did 0.1004  or 1366 watts and 13603 gh.

So then this gear would be a beast in a cold room.

Your array  is a loft in a converted barn  with rain and heat shielding.

It would be great for the 841 starting in Oct and up to Apr.

yes it would be really good for 6 to 7 months a year.

Actually  my opinion is  a firmware tweak  that allows a true  freq downclock  for hot mining  fixes this gear.

It really needs an option  like that

I am letting it   get hot again

Temperature©----------Fan
36 / 82_____________5550RPM / 100%

and the room is up to 82f

I want to   do this test again and see what result. I get with the hp 2450 watt psu I have.
20257  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My review of Avalon 841 . on: April 30, 2018, 12:42:37 PM
is that worth buying it?

Well it is a good question.  It would be an issue  if you can not cool the gear.  even  the max temp allowed to run the gear 30c or 86f

https://canaan.io/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/841-datasheet-1.pdf

resulted  in  1545 watts used vs 1366  at 67f

So  87f = 1545 watts
and 67f = 1366 watts

This means I can not put 20 in my solar array  which will go well into the 90's in the summer.

But even if you run  at 85f  you are eating  150 to 180 extra watts.

If I get 10 or 20 of these I need my buyers to know the heat limits.

To be fair the spec page shows 30c as the max  it also shows a +- 20 %  range which we know know is dependent on heat in your mining room.

Part of my job it to try to show what you would be getting into if I sold gear to you or if you buy from a builder.

@ taserz   the only gear  I can run safely in the array in the summer :

the old  s-9 set to lower freq
the L3+   set to lower freq
the dragonmint T1  set to efficiency and with -ck's throttling  feature when gear gets hot.

the last youtube I did  stunned  me  I dropped the room temp from  87f to 76f by opening my garage doors  and watts dropped from 1545 to 1425 in well under 8 minutes as the room cooled.

Today it is 48 f.  I am going to test this again. Using a 2450 watt hp psu.

I get review items at times and I may sell this one after the review is complete.

Amazon would want 450.
My review would take a week and I would not overwrite it a lot in a week.
Maybe 2 or 3 overwrites for the review. it is rated for 600TBW  which is 600 full overwrites

So I would want less then 450 but more then 250

I would ship to other countries. but not for free

I would ship to usa for free

20259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: When will the dam break that holds used GPU prices above new MSRP? on: April 30, 2018, 02:22:21 AM
why should prices tank?

a 1080ti  earns 2 dollars a day mining zec.

Take Zec   when using about 170 watts that is  4 kwatts in a day  at 10 cents it is 40 cents at 15 cents it is 60 cents and at 20 cents it is 80cents a day in power.

so at  worst 2-.8 = 1.20 in profit.   So if I make 1.20 a day i make 438 in a year.

So everyone that purchased a 1080ti in 2017  can afford to hold the card and mine.

And sales were restricted  in 2018.

This means  desperate miners owning 1080ti's don't exist and won't exist until cards earn nothing and mine at a loss.

I own 21 1080ti's all paid off.  If they earn 21x 1.20 = 25.20 a day  and my power is 13 cents  so I am earning about  21 x 1.50 = 31.50 a day.  or 900 a month.

I have no need to sell them at 400 or 500.  I can ask 600 for air cooled and 800 for water block hybrids.

all of my 21 have more then 2 years left on warranties.  I have no need to dump my cards.

Since everyone is paid off  I can shut them off and speculate on a new rush in a year.  I can hope the new cards come out and are 2x retail which will lift my card prices higher.

Worst case I have 3 heavy gaming friends that will be happy to take some from me.

Many of the 1080 ti people are like me.  I can't be panicked into selling them.

But if you want an air cooled for 600 or a water block hybrid for 800 I will sell you one or two.

I have six of these

they are the only one selling them new  and they want 1050 plus shipping .

I can sell mine at 800   or mine them at 1.50 profit a day.

I earned  500 on them . I got them for 800 so I am 300 in the hole. they have 32 months warranty. I purchased them with other profits .. I can keep mining them.

or sell them for 800 which is 250 less then corsair wants.

I was able to do what I consider a quite remarkable video

Setting the stage for this youtube video I turned on a lot of gear in my garage to get it to  87f  which is 1 f higher then the 30c or 86c number used.

I did it real time  it was 55f outdoors of my garage and my garage was 87f.

I opened the two garage doors and the back door to cool off the garage watch the watts drop in real time

Your video will be live at: https://youtu.be/KEctJaz4Mo0

what does this mean?

My opinion is  summer will not work well if you plan to fan cool this miner.
