2041  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: rx 480 vs rx 580, what is the best for mining? on: June 19, 2017, 11:28:24 PM
Hash rate is almost identical. However IMO, the RX 580 is a better card than the RX 480. Most have better cooling and the power draw issues from the early RX 480's was also addressed. In regards to the DAG epoch change. My reported hash for seven cards went from 202.7 to 202.2 MH/s. Even if the hash were to drop by 10% over the next 6 months, that can easily be addressed by adding another RX 570 4 GB card for ~$200. At that price point and the much better dual mining performance over Nvidia cards, still makes the AMD RX cards easily the best choice for ETH.
2042  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Old PSU for mining rig on: June 19, 2017, 09:45:17 PM
Thank you for your answers.I will build the rig case and I'm looking for EVGA (out of stock at first look).
All I can find is Antec and Seasonic.
Any advice for the risers?

BBT also recently uploaded a case build video with a smaller form factor for a four card rig:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n9tgRw_JkM

The benefit of the previous case is it would give you room to expand in the future. Though I would also suggest making the case 1.5" taller from 9 1/4" cuts to 10 3/4" cuts to give you more clearance when using USB risers.

Seasonic is a good brand, though I prefer Corsair or EVGA. As long as the PSU is at least gold rated and has enough connectors for the cards (at least for PCI-E connectors), it should be adequate.

I use 6-pin PCI-E risers. Three thicker wires that are designed to spread a higher 12V load instead of two used by molex and sata connectors. The 6-pin risers also use four capacitors for a more stable current flow compared to the three used by the molex and sata risers. The good ones also come with a voltage regulator to prevent spikes. The problem is they are sold out everywhere, so you have to order them from China which can take 2-3 weeks. That's why it's a good idea to order twice as many risers as you think you will need. Nothing worse that having cards idle while you wait for risers.

I just preordered two Rx470 and two RX480 nitro 8Gb on Amazon, to learn the basics in mining.I will use my old computer (Asrock p67 pro3 motherboard, I5 2500K proc, 8g ddr3 and Enermax ECO80+ 620 W power supply). The MB can hold 4 GPU but my PSU provide only two video card power connectors
Is it a way around that?Any advice is appreciated.

With 4 cards in a case it's going to be very hard to get enough airflow to keep the temps in check. If you can't buy a new motherboard, I would suggest removing the motherboard and building the BBT mining case below out of two 8ft pieces of 1/8" x 3/4" angled aluminum, one 8 ft 1" x 3" piece of pine and #8 1/2" self-tapping screws. The case will fit up to 7 RX 4XX/5XX if you put them about 1 inch apart. The cost of the aluminum angles and screws was ~$35. If you build it out of all wood, the cost would be less than $10. That's a much better design that allows for good airflow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5xNrlxsCVs

The only tools needed were a drill with a 3/32" hex titanium drill bit to drill pilot holes and a #2 phillips screwdriver bit. A hacksaw with a 32 tooth blade and a plastic miter box to cut the aluminum and wood. The case is very sturdy and can support up to 7 GPU's.

A good quality PSU is very important since it's under constant load. You need to get a good quality PSU that can power your cards adequately. For ~$120 an EVGA G2 750W or 850W would easily give you all the connections you need for four cards. The higher efficiency will also save you money in the long run.

I just checked and it says my BIOS mode is "LEGACY." I'm assuming this shouldn't be the case? If so, should I reformat my SSD and re-install as UEFI.

You also need to install Windows in UEFI mode:

Yes, you need to format the drive and install Windows in UEFI mode for multiple GPU's. Create a bootable UEFI Windows install flash drive using Rufus. Make sure to select UEFI partition for GPT disk from the drop down menu when creating the flash drive and boot to the UEFI installer from the boot menu.
2045  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Average cost for mining rig on: June 19, 2017, 07:46:26 PM
The most important factor in a rig's cost are the GPU's and what you pay for them. With the RX 570's 4 GB cards you can easily get 28 MH/s each on ETH after a Bios mod. You should expect to pay ~$200 each currently. The problem is getting multiple cards at the same time, as most vendors are limiting purchases to one or two cards, when they have them in stock. Add another $500 - $600 for a PSU, motherboard, CPU, ram, risers and materials to build a mining case and that should get you close to the minimum you would need to spend.

Try uninstalling the driver in safe mode using DDU and reinstalling it. Maybe try a different driver version as well.
2048  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Fan Speed Problem on: June 19, 2017, 04:19:52 PM
The processor you have controls the onboard GPU. Check Device Manager and see if all the cards are listed and don't have any errors.

How many connections are you making with each strand? Never use more than two connections per PSU strand and with the power hungry 1080 ti, you probably should only use one.

If you're on Windows, this seems like what you are looking for. You install the server on the rig and can monitor it in your account with a browser.

2051  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can I dual mine with "Corsair AX1500i 80Plus Titanium"? on: June 19, 2017, 03:40:36 PM
Absolutely. Adjusting the TDP you shoud be able to get 6 cards well under 1000W. BBT has his 8 card 1070 rig at ~820 W.

You need a monitor or a dummy plug in the card plugged in the primary PCI-E x16 slot for the AMD drivers to be able to read and set the fan and temperature settings. You also need to change the primary video to the PCI-E slot and not the on board video in the motherboard Bios.
2054  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can I use 2 power in 1 rig without Add2PSU? on: June 19, 2017, 10:38:56 AM
Add2PSU is  just a reed relay to daisy chain the PSU's so they start at the same time. As long as the PSU's share the same ground, the same can be done using an automotive relay:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDArticles&op=Story&ndar_id=27

You could also connect the two green wires on the PSU's and they will both start at the same time as long as they share the same ground. Easy way:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAK94766757

Or by jump starting the PSU with a piece of thin metal between the green wire and a black wire on the slave PSU and then turning on the switch on the back before starting the computer.

https://forum.overclock3d.net/showpost.php?s=3c0b5ead1c29a7c47c0e8fceb274ecf8&p=3815&postcount=1

The better EVGA PSU's also come with a 'self-tester' that does the same thing as the jumper. What's really important is the PSU's share the same ground.

I don't recommend using unpowered risers. PCI-E 3.0 cards tend to draw more power from the slot and the ribbon cable wires are too thin to use under constant load.
2056  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 6 GPU SETUP - only 4 GPU Working on: June 19, 2017, 02:01:23 AM
Make sure the risers are attached all the way to the cards and recheck all the connections. It's also very possible you could have bad risers. Try switching the risers around.

2059  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Low Budget Mining GPU on: June 18, 2017, 09:58:48 PM
The GTX 1060 3 GB would make a good budget card. You should be able to pick up a used one for less than $150. It does ~23 MH/s on ETH and ~260 H/s on ZEC. Other good options:

1050 Ti - ~14 MH/s on ETH and ~185 H/s on ZEC.
RX 560 - ~ 13.8 MH/s on ETH

BBT has several rig videos focusing on these budget cards:

Chance of computer catching fire from mining?

Directly proportional to the coefficient of the organic matter controlling it.
