 Guccifer, the infamous Romanian hacker who accessed emails of celebrities and top US officials, will be extradited to the United States, after losing a case in his home country’s top court.

Reuters reports that Lehel will come to the US under an 18-month extradition order, following a request made by the US authorities. Details of the extradition have not been made public, however.

Marcel Lehel, a 42-year-old hacker better known by his pseudonym “Guccifer,” achieved notoriety when he released an email with images of paintings by former President George W. Bush, including a self-portrait in a bathtub. He also hacked and published emails from celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio, Steve Martin and Mariel Hemingway.

Also released were emails between former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Corina Cretu, a Romanian member of European Parliament, prompting Powell to deny that the two had had an affair.

Perhaps most notably, Lehel was also the first source to uncover Hillary Clinton’s improper use of a private email account while she was Secretary of State, which the FBI is investigating as a potential danger to national security.

Peeple, the notorious "Yelp for people" app, arrives


 It generated controversy and criticism when word of it first broke back in October, even though Peeple, a people-rating mobile app that's been described as like "Yelp for people," hadn't launched yet. Now, after a number of tweaks to the concept, the people-rating app finally launched today.

Peeple is available to download for free for iPhones or iPads. The app -- which is not affiliated with the popular review site Yelp -- was created by two friends in Calgary, Canada, and allows users to rate other users in three categories: personal, professional, and romantic.

The idea is to provide "a reference check for the people around us," the creators say on their website. "The Peeple app allows you to better choose who you hire, do business with, date, become your neighbours, roommates, landlords/tenants, and watch, teach, and care for your children."

However, the idea of people posting "reviews" of their neighbors, coworkers, dates and others prompted outrage from critics who saw its potential for abuse as an outlet for bullying or cyber revenge. It became a hot topic on social media, where the prolific tweeter Chrissy Teigen wrote, "In an age where both truth and gossip on the Internet can literally ruin lives, this #peeple app is horrible AND scary."

Perhaps in response to that round of criticism last fall, the Peeple app going public today will not allow users to rate others without their permission. Reviews will only be published with the consent of the person being reviewed. A user can also hide his or her negative reviews. In addition, users must post under their real names, to help encourage civility and accountability.

That being said, a planned future paid subscription option -- the "truth license," co-creator Julia Cordray told the Calgary Herald -- will allow users to access every review, even those that are hidden.

Obviously, this future feature will generate plenty of controversy on its own, but for now, the Peeple that is out now is much tamer than what was originally planned. The "truth license" is being planned for an April release, Cordray said.

"If a mom wants to look up a coach for her kids, she can see all the amazing things on that person's profile, but maybe there's some areas of improvement for that person," Cordray told the newspaper. "So, when the mom upgrades to the truth license, she'll be able to see all the recommendations on the back-end that the coach never published in their profile."

On its website, Peeple stresses that it does not want to be used as a platform for attacking others. "We do not tolerate profanity, bullying ... name calling, degrading comments, abuse, derogatory comments, sexual references, racism, legal references, hateful content, sexism, and other parameters" the company says.

Even with adjustments to the current version of the app, social media users have been showing some skepticism.

On the official Peeple Facebook page, one commenter wrote: "When character becomes currency, humanity suffers. We are not metrics, and you cannot ethically justify ranking humans against normative social ideals. We are #PeopleNotPeeple."

For its part, Peeple responded: "You can share the recommendations you receive to build your online reputation in social media. That's what we mean by Character becomes currency for you. We are not ranking people you write recommendations about them. Try the app to see what it really is about."

Peeple is available through iTunes today, while an Android version is on its way.

Austrians fear parts of Vienna are becoming no-go areas after a father was attacked by a 'Sharia patrol' when he told them to stop threatening his wife and daughter for not being correctly dressed.

As various factions of migrants stake claims to territory in the city, it has been reported that the self-styled Sharia patrols have been visiting clubs and bars in the Millennium City area to make sure Chechen women were properly dressed and acting appropriately.

However, when one Austrian man tried to step in to stop the patrol from hassling his Chechen wife and daughter, he ended up being hospitalised.

It came as violence escalated across Vienna at the weekend, with more than 50 young men from the Afghan and Chechen communities clashing in the city centre.

The gang had attacked each other with planks of wood, iron bars and knives. Two of those injured are in intensive care and their condition is described as critical.

Police say that the row - which involved around 40 people from Afghanistan attacking 10 from Chechnya - had centred around a social media row on Facebook.

Six of the alleged asylum seekers from Afghanistan have been arrested. The rest have escaped.

Local couple Thomas and Manuela Sonntagfruh, standing on the bloodstained ground after the carnage at the weekend, said: 'It is quite common that young people might argue, but something like this just isn't normal.'

The latest incident follows on from mass punch-ups not only in other parts of Vienna, but also in the cities of Linz, Graz, Sankt Polten and in Salzburg.

It comes as the youths from Chechnya, most of them linked in with various martial arts clubs, attempted to establish territories under their control, said police quoted in local daily Kurier.

Another local who had witnessed the weekend attack in Vienna was Renate Hofstatter, who said: 'Many residents around here are really worried. Personally I'm really worried if I have to go out on my own.'

Another added: 'I am a caretaker in the local block of flats, and most of the old people don't go out at night any longer.'

Meanwhile, last month it was reported how police needed to massively increase their presence in Graz train station in order to chase out bands of asylum seekers that had been rejected from Germany, and had started gathering there.

It comes as Macedonia has effectively sealed off the main route into the Balkans by migrants in a move backed by Austria. 

Hundreds of thousands of people have used the route in recent months to try to reach preferred destinations like Germany or the countries of Scandinavia.

An estimated 13,000 to 14,000 people waited at Greece's border with Macedonia on Monday hoping desperately to be allowed to cross.
