2101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 30, 2013, 06:49:10 PM
I'm not in favour of reducing writer pay to 1/5th a share per 1000 words, but I don't mind  the idea of reducing the total allowed number of shares per round, but I'm not sure of the purpose.  With the prices soaring that should give the incentive we need for the bounties to get done, provided the bounties are promoted enough.

Unless the basic problem is the fact that one can maybe make way the heck more money rambling on for thousands of words about some piece of vapourware one would like to develop or like to see developed by someone else than one could possibly hope to make by actually writing code...

Or just rambling on about anything, heck why even write about projects or code, one could write about anything at all...

2103  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 30, 2013, 06:10:21 PM
I doubt if any old bounties need to be doubled or increased because the exchange rate has skyrocketed lately, not only the rae against bitcoin but also the rate against fiat because bitcoin itself has also been skyrocketing. Devcoins might actually be worth more right now per coin than they have ever been.

So I suggest letting the increase in value of cryptocoins in general, the tide that is floating all boats lately, take care of making existing bounties start to look good again.

Unless the problem is that the pay for devtome writing will still keep dwarfing the pay for normal bounties since it too is floated by the same tide?

If so maybe we should consider making a thousand words be a fifth of a share instead of a full share, since we also only have a maximim number of shares in a round no matter how much writing anyone does.

2104  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ZET] Zetacoin - SHA256 coin - Pools up - Quick confirmations on: November 30, 2013, 04:55:20 PM
Can anyone tell me why zetacoin is so special ? unlike every other altcoin  Roll Eyes (btw got 200k of them)

Its the quick confirmations... The transaction take seconds whilst the transactions in bitcoin can take much much longer.. 200k.. Thats great...seems that today you are quite rich Smiley

That plus once all the 160 millions are mined, you still have 1 million issued a year, incentive for the miners to keep hashing without increasing fees.

Sounds quite similar to GeistGeld then. Except that it cannot be merged mined, right? So the only hashing power it is going to get is taken away from other coins such as bitcoin, whereas you can mine GeistGeld right alongside all the other merged mined coins (bitcoin, namecoin, groupcoin, devcoin, ixcoin, i0coin, coiledcoin) using your same hashing-power. So why would I turn my hashing power away from merged mining eight coins at once to mine just this one coin? You could say ah but this coin is low difficulty, but coiledcoin and (especially) geistgeld are also low difficulty, so with merged mining I get two low difficulty coins at once plus also still get my bitcoins, namecoins, groupcoins, devcoins, ixcoins, i0coins and coiledcoins...

Oh and its not only geistgeld that keeps giving coins forever either; by merged mining I get several coins that will keep on going so miners won't need only fees to support them.

I thought there was already a site where you tell it all the altcoins you have and it telsl you how much that adds up to?

That is at least a start.

2106  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Accessibility (e.g. by the blind) on: November 27, 2013, 08:43:54 PM
I just got an email from a totally blind person, congratulating me (as the person he found by doing WHOIS lookup of devcoin.org) on the accessibility of the DeVCoin client.

Quote
as I have tried a large number of crypto coin
wallets and found they will not work at all with my screen reading program
on my computer.

So hmm, maybe the ancient code that we used to build DeVCoin has something going for it that newer code has lost?

Maybe I can get him into this thread to clarify so we can compare specific clients to find where they went wrong, and try to update latest bitcoin code to be more accessible if the latest bitcoin client is one of the ones he has trouble with...

2107  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: November 26, 2013, 07:27:24 PM
Huh? It is pretty near free to mine it. Just add it into your merge if for some reason your merge does not already include it.

People have had years to pick up namecoin, groupcoin, devcoin, ixcoin, i0coin, coiledcoin and geistgeld pretty nearly free right alongside their bitcoins, if they haven't been doing so that is their own shortsightedness its not like they weren't given the opportunity.

p2pool is pretty darn simple to merged-mine with and really only geistgeld, with its very fast blocks and its very quickly adjusting difficulty, ever really gave any problems. (Its difficulty would drop way below one, like 0.06 or so, causing it and p2pool to get spammed by the cgminer. But that really only happened because so many people were being too darn lazy to add it to their merge. If more people had merged it the problem maybe would never even have been seen.)

I just finally figured out that the greyed-out (like de-activated stuff usally) little x next to ordered items in the shopping cart was not merely decorative and was not a de-activated delete option but was in fact an active delete button.

Poor choice of shading/colour for an active button. But luckily I was desperate enough to try it so managed to figure it out in time.

2109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: November 26, 2013, 04:07:30 PM
Like any good investment you dollar cost average in, and do the same going out.

When you have a basis for your BTC of about $100 per (assuming you bought some) and its $850 today, if you don't start slowly getting out then you are just a greedy bitch who doesn't know what they are doing.

I have X in cold storage and now I just start selling when the price is favorable every few days.

You don't get the "R" in ROI unless you take some profit.

What you seem to be missing is that bitcoin IS profit.

It is money, yes? What are you counting as profit, the endless streams of (waste)paper being printed by governments?

Or good hard cryptocoin?

2110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: November 26, 2013, 04:01:53 PM
In fact if you bought BTC with what you paid for your miner, you would be much better off, except everyone seems to ignore this.

And folks that say this over and over always ignore the bigger elephant which is what is your target sell price?

So, right now, say how much BTC you will buy today and how high you will wait to sell.   I don't remember anyone saying they were buying $14000 worth of BTC in June and holding until they were $800 each

What matters is how much more $$$ you end up with.  If you end up with more $$$ after only mining 60-80% of your BTC back since you end up selling at a later time than if you just bought btc and then had your weak hands shook, and only gained half of what you would of if you bought miners and mined..

talk about that side of reality.. the human element

so in summary, the people who keep repeating this dogma of just buy btc instead of mining are the people that don't want anyone else to mine...  game theory 101

Since there is hardly ever anything else that appreciates as well as bitcoins do, why would you sell at all unless forced to?

Sure if you lack cash for food clothing or shelter you'll be forced to sell a bitcoin or few at $800 or $8000 or $80000 or whatever value they have when that time of desperation comes around, but until then where the heck would you put your stash if not in bitcoins? Altcoins you can get by merged mining alongside your bitcoin mining, or using GPUs left over from the GPU era of bitcoin mining, or using the CPUs that came with the motherboards you used to plug GPUs into. So what else? You going to sell bitcoins to buy APPLE or IBM or FACEBOOK or something?

How do you remove an item from your KnC shopping cart?

I still have a november Jupiter in my cart and there does not seem to be any way to remove it.

The checkout button does not work either, presumably because that no longer available item is in the cart.

2112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Creator's Cut. on: November 26, 2013, 03:33:45 PM
The point you seem to be missing is that it is not good to have an incentive for people to create more scamcoins.

All the stuff that is actually needed in the coin world is stuff that can be done with/for pretty much any coin at all.

It is not the coins themselves that are needed, we have way way way to many coins already.

What is needed is services around all the coins.

Basically if no existing coin can serve the purpose for which someone thinks of creating a coin, it is damn near certain that the purpose is not one which we should support.

In short, the purpose is mostly likely just to start a new scam / ponzi / pyramid with the author at the top of the scam/scheme.

Almost any actually useful to the community purpose can be much better served using existing coins, and we could scrap 90% or more of existing coins and still have more coin types than we actually need.

So, having any incentive to create yet another clonecoin / scamcoin / crapcoin is NOT GOOD. It is because scammers see an incentive in starting a scam of their own that we have all these scams already.

Most of the coins already existing are never going to have enough hashing power to be secure.

Securing a blockchain is insanely expensive. We cannot afford to secure more than a tiny fraction of the coins already in existence. More coins just dilutes the hashing power more, making more pathetically vulnerable blockchains.

There are way too many coins already, any use anyone other than a scammer is likely to have for a coin can be much better done using existing coins.

What makes the creation of new coins tempting is simply what makes it tempting to start any other pyramid/ponzi scheme: the desire to be at the top of the scam/scheme.

The very fact that it is so tempting makes it abundantly clear the objective is the scam/pyramid.

That is why you see serial coin-creators too, they launch a new coin, dump, launch another and so on. Total scam.

Making the scam even more lucrative by pre-mining or insta-mining just makes it more of a scam.

Also, for the most part they are not creators at all, they are just taking someone else's work and re-naming it and maybe changing a few numbers here and there to pretend it is somehow "different", or adding more blockchain bloat (like this datacoin thing), or any other hack they think might fool people into thinking it is somehow "new" and/or "different".

Consider the sci fi coins even, those would be much much better as simply "themes" for bitcoin, they could for example code in a hard "conversion rate" from whatzitthingies to bitcoins, and display all your bitcoins as whatzitthingies, and you'd have a pretty bitcoin client that uses your sci fi race's word for money as its word for bitcoins or for 0.123456 bitcoins or for 1/1337 of a bitcoin or whatever. All the fan theme stuff, with a really valuable coin underlying it that is accepted "everywhere in known space". Smiley

Nice jump. Thanks to those of you who dumped to me at 13 satoshis!  Smiley

I dumped quite a few at 13-16, doh! :p

Wow I didn't see it go that low I don't think. But I only trade on Vircurex. I have offers at every satoshi of price up and down.

Seems maybe arbitrage wasn't working fast enough or something, in theory arbitrage is supposed to match the price across all exchanges.

I am too suspicious of most exchanges though, seems like new fly by night exchanges were coming out regularly for a while. Even one that claimed to have a hack and paid off the supposedly affected users I was already so suspicious of (maybe they were the ones involved in the whole novacoin scam thing of somesuch, can't recall for sure) that I figured the hack probably never happened, that they were just saying that to try to gain some trust like VIrcurex did (Vircurex supposedly was hacked twice and both times made good to its customers. Notice the "supposedly" in all this though. Do we know for sure even Vircurex isn't just making it up to gain trust? Main reason I leave coins there is really because I already took out more profit than the coins I have left there... and still too the main reason I do it is because I feel a duty, as one of the initial developers of DeVCoin, to provide liquidity for the coin. "Someone has to do it" so it seemed like Unthinkingbit and I were the logical people to take the risk and do it.)

Oh and lookie, that solidcoin scammer scammed again, a scam exchange, what a surprise, not.

Sometime today mmpool went down or got DDOS attacked or something, bad gateway error in nginx trying to view my account.

Whenever I try to start my Saturn mining, it says Halted (Check Miner Settings).

I have checked my miner settings, I checked they still say the same connect info for mmpool.

But it just keeps saying it halted.

It had not said that when I first found out mmpool was down. It just had crazy-low temperature for its purported mining speed.

I added my p2pool as a second pool, but p2pool is broken nowadays it seems (endless cries of too many open files), so I removed p2pool leaving only mmpool and got this halted thing. So I deleted that too, reset to factory settings, and input mmpool again.

Still get this damn halted thing.

Looked at the manual edit, the syntax looks fine.

Reloaded 0.99 firmware and rebooted. Still the same error.

What is going on?

EDIT: Power-cycling the thing fixed it.

Yeah but why would they bother with IXcoin when it takes nothing to create another coin, could even be exactly the same as ixcoin but different name.

Compare I0Coin's difficulty with IXCoin's.

What difficulty can you create for your clone of the day? How many super-rigs do you and your cronies have with which to secure it?

dvcstable01.dvcnode.org should have ixcoin running 24/7 with incoming port open.

But if you're going to put it in code, you might as well put dvcstable02 and dvcstable06 too in case I end up moving it from one server to another. (For example when I upgrade 01 and 02 to Fedora 19 from the Fedora 17 those two are running right now.)

Only one connection? That seems very bad for Ixcoin, it should be able to get its full 8 even if you dont have an incoming port open...

2119  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: -- The Masses are Coming! The Masses are Coming! DON'T sell. on: November 25, 2013, 04:15:49 AM
Likely a lot of disaster is on the way too, since the vast majority of the coins on the market cap site have pathetic difficulty, way the heck too easy to 51% attack, and all have to fight for the same miners instead of all being able to share the protection of the same miners via merged mining.

When all those scrypt coins that cannot be merged mined start to go up in value things could get ugly for them...

-MarkM-
2120  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: November 25, 2013, 04:13:41 AM
Yeah but why the big hurry? The higher it goes the more pools will add it to their merge so the higher the difficulty will go so it will get harder to mine! We only hve so many months to mine new coins, why make it harder any sooner than we have to? Smiley

I0Coin, fortunately, has not been added to their merge yet by as many poosl as IXCoin has, so it is easier to mine. But, it gives way the heck less coins per block so even I0Coin is getting to be a bit late to mine a lot of now.

Really the best times with all these coins was back before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. Getting kind of late now for them I guess. So maybe you are right, too late to get them easy so might as well accept the fact the quick and easy times for them have gone and now is the time to be thankful you did manage to pick some up while picking them up was easy...
