2141  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is Steam going to accept Bitcoin again? on: October 06, 2018, 07:57:16 PM
If they decided to use BitPay again, I would rather continue paying with fiat on their platform. BitPay does not support the Lightning Network (since it's pro Bitcoin Cash) and has enormous "network" fee which is basically their markup. There wouldn't anything wrong in this if they called it something like service or conversion fee. BTCPayServer is a free and open-source alternative which supports both Lightning Network and on-chain transactions. However, I doubt that they are going to accept Bitcoin anytime soon again.
2142  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reminder for new members NOT to keep money on a Exchange. on: October 06, 2018, 07:13:54 PM
i get that some people want to keep money on a exchange in maybe USD OR EURO so they can buy whatever coin they want fast [...]

There is no need to use an exchange. Many of them have ridiculously high fees (mostly withdrawals) and force their users to pass through KYC verification. I would rather use Changelly or some other third party service which offers quick exchange between different cryptocurrencies. Even TREZOR started supporting these kind of services natively in their web wallet interface.
2143  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Samourai wallet drops fiat equivalent balances. Bold step or gimmick? on: October 06, 2018, 06:18:56 PM
Their Telegram channel is full of people who are also against the recent change. Samoraui support replies that fiat display support is not going back to their wallet even if many people demand it. I doubt that anyone has an APK file of an older version, what a shame. It was really convenient for me to check how much USD equivalent in BTC I can spend on-the-go. I am going to continue using it since it's one of the best Android wallets I have used so far.
2144  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: future bitcoin transaction fees on: October 06, 2018, 04:41:35 PM
lightning is just a way for some closed structures, but not for the whole community and not at once. therefore, the increase in transactions, we may still see

Actually, Lightning and other layers might be a good way to scale. Each of these solutions still forces their users to broadcast on-chain transactions at the beginning but this can be also partially fixed (channel factories). Lightning Network transaction fees are usually near zero. This will never be achieved on-chain due to limited block weight (long and controversial topic). It all depends on how you perceive Bitcoin. Either as a store of value or as a currency.
2145  Economy / Economics / Re: What if there is a natural disaster, such as an earthquake? on: October 05, 2018, 07:57:54 PM
You might have Bitcoin and internet access, but what will you be able to buy with this without disponible supplies at the stores (or without even stores)?

Think about the rest of the country. Imagine what would happen if an earthquake occured close to one of the biggest national mining farm which secures the national cryptocurrency. It would take some time before the mining difficulty adjusted. Transaction fees would become enormous and the time between each block would be too long to provide instant transactions (this doesn't apply to the Lightning Network on Bitcoin which works independently after funds are locked up in a channel successfully). It is government's duty to provide food supplies at such time.
2146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions RE: setting up Lightning Node on Raspberry Pi with Stadicus' guide on: October 05, 2018, 04:19:10 PM
Ok I can try again changing the nickname to just LightNode, but what about the "2048 37" at the beginning of the public key. Will the spaces there also create a problem? Also what are your thoughts on just skipping this step altogether?

You can skip this step and use a strong password instead. I have been using only passwords for a long time and nothing bad has happened yet. Here is how my public key looks like in ".ssh/authorized_keys".

Code:
ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABJQAAAQEAouIC+YCXpx9dnUsjg6pROV6pTMKJBkoHEB4vy/R9XL+WHdKQbLGm7wt9kQ4soI15oHDAaHScm6lAnAirGzRFIGGLOfgBVGJygaptqz2Q9iw3

0gaHwDCZWb7cKZVJlzVegw1JL40hox0sKnCNV6aooh1Qdog5e1d8m2BKwDasc1mKdcFgg82MB+FmnxlYRTwLi3
dW0hwEC+hIq+vF4AdBGrmskxaI/n1wMxAHJ9egJi5dwzHGCSp0QRlCeFbIIGtWlLw== rsa-key-20181004

Of course it would be better if you managed to get it worked out.
2147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions RE: setting up Lightning Node on Raspberry Pi with Stadicus' guide on: October 04, 2018, 09:53:24 PM
Another thing I noticed was the guide stated we should have 3 documents at this point; the public key, private key, and the authorized key text file. Right now I have everything but the text file. Is the text file just where we pasted the public key from PuTTYgen or is this something else?

I don't have a text file either. You should still be able to access your Raspberry Pi by simply typing in only IP address in the host name. Use "nano .ssh/authorized_keys" to access your saved keys. Save it using CTRL + O. I copied my public key from the window in which I had to move a cursor a bit.
2148  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions RE: setting up Lightning Node on Raspberry Pi with Stadicus' guide on: October 04, 2018, 07:03:33 PM
I tried that and had the same problem. PuTTY window opens blank and then eventually get a message "Network error: Connection timed out"

I followed the tutorial on my VPS and everything works fine. If this was a problem with the key configuration, you would get a "Server refused our key" error. Are you sure that you have put a public key in ".ssh/authorized_keys"? Make sure that your router hasn't changed the local IP of your Raspberry Pi. It may happen if you didn't configure it to be persistent.
2149  Economy / Economics / Re: Apart from trading where else to use crypto? on: October 04, 2018, 04:14:33 PM
There is a huge difference between the possible ways of using tokens and cryptocurrencies. When I went to Greece I was surprised when I saw a couple of places which were accepting many different cryptocurrencies for their service. I guess it's because they use a payment processor such as CoinGate which takes care of everything. Many people try to take advantage of the ICO bubble. Most of the tokens out of the market are useless because the same service could be provided without the token. Using tokens requires the user to know how to use cryptocurrencies (Waves, Ethereum, NEO and so on).
2150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Lost Bitcoin on: October 04, 2018, 09:49:57 AM
Is there a small portable version I can download without having to lose windows?

Yes, there is. Some distros have a LiveCD feature which allows you to test the operating system without making any changes to your PC. Create a bootable USB with the ISO you choose and boot from it.
2151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions RE: setting up Lightning Node on Raspberry Pi with Stadicus' guide on: October 04, 2018, 07:14:37 AM
Assuming my servin login user is "admin" and the server IP address is 192.168.1.2, would I be putting admin;192.168.1.2 into the "Host Name" field? I tried just using the IP address and loading the private key but the SSH window opens blank and doesn't allow me to type anything. Once again, any help would be much appreciated! Would really like to get this thing up and running

Your problem is that your system doesn't know as which user you are trying to log in. The solution is quite simple. Enter "USERNAME@192.168.1.2" in the host name, add your keys and save your session again.
2152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What's is the best bitcoin wallet for beginners? on: October 03, 2018, 08:35:34 PM
If you are looking for the best security, I suggest investing in a Trezor/Ledger nano S, you'll sleep much better knowing that your funds are safe. (Usability is not compromised, they are very easy to use)

I would recommend him TREZOR since its developers are doing a great job. It doesn't support as many altcoins as Ledger but at least it provides easy to use and always working wallet interface. A few weeks ago, I wrote a list of hardware wallets which you might find useful. I would not recommend buying a hardware wallet if the investment is lower than a value of such wallet. As Omega wrote, Electrum is a good choice for beginners, especially because user doesn't even have to download any additional data. @MathGame you should check out my Electrum tutorial for beginners.
2153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions RE: setting up Lightning Node on Raspberry Pi with Stadicus' guide on: October 03, 2018, 06:54:06 PM
As you can see there are two separate lines, how do I add the second line in PuTTY so both commands execute at the same time?

You got that wrong. What the author of the tutorial actually does, is opening a file (sudo nano etc/fstab) and then replacing "UUID=123456" manually. CTRL + O lets you save the file.

You can try this automatic installer if you find it too difficult to install it on your own.

Where/how do I access the fstab file? Is this something done in PuTTY or somewhere else?

Yes, you have to use nano which is a text editor as a person above mentioned. Use "sudo nano /etc/fstab" and save your file using CTRL + O.
2154  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning Network Discussion Thread on: October 03, 2018, 06:31:13 PM
Looks like Electrum will support LN very soon, this surely will boost LN usage since majority of Bitcoiner who own desktop use Electrum.

I wonder if Electrum is going to support receiving funds over the Lightning Network. LND already supports "disabling" channels which means that the routing problem should not be present anymore. This solution should be implemented in Electrum as well in order to avoid the increase of offline channels which might cause problems while sending payments. I have just watched the end of the event's stream and it was mentioned that a new version with the Lightning Network support should be released in a few months. There is no need to rush.
2155  Economy / Economics / Re: China moves further towards cashless society on: October 03, 2018, 02:52:40 PM
Problems with elderly people are unavoidable; however, we should not leave them alone in the world which becomes more and more advanced. We should help them with understanding modern technology instead. I am not surprised that the Chinese government wants its people to use cashless transactions. It would make it easier for them to track the financial activity of their citizens. I am quite sure that the grey market will move to previous metals if that happens.
2156  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to accept crypto coins on my website on: October 02, 2018, 08:29:37 PM
This is not automatically possible. The reason is that BTC is irreversible while VISA or paypal are reversible.
This would lead to a high amount of fraud towards the service provider who offers this kind of exchange.

There are still many websites which allow their users to buy Bitcoin using a credit/debit card. I doubt that these kind of exchange differs much from an ordinary payment. I used this kind of service and I know that there are some limits if you don't decide to go through KYC verification.

Building it yourself (or using open source projects (please only after a security audit!)) is the correct way (where only you are in possession of your money).

Using BTCPayServer might be a good idea. As far as I remember, it even supports Lightning Network and altcoin payments. Great alternative to BitPay which has outrageous fees.
2157  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.16.3 Released on: October 02, 2018, 06:58:12 PM
What about Bitcoin having like 11 forks?

Developers of every single fork will have to take care of that issue on their own. Litecoin, which is a fork of Bitcoin, has already got its client patched. I wouldn't expect any reaction from the developers of, for example, Bitcoin Diamond, Emerald and any other Bitcoin clone which nobody uses.

@achow101 Do you happen to know why the minimum transaction fee is going to be lowered in the 0.18 release and not in the 0.17 one?
2158  Economy / Economics / Re: How Binance Decentralized Crypto Exchange Launch in 2019 Will Impact the Market on: October 02, 2018, 06:15:46 PM
Considering the demand (or lack thereof) and the number of existing choices for decentralized exchanges, I don't think this move can impact the market in a meaningful way. Not that I dislike the move -- more options is better, just that they'll simply be another competitor for existing options.

I guess that many people are still reluctant to use decentralised exchanges because these exchanges lack liqiduity and haven't been out there for a long time. There still might be some critical bugs which might lead to huge losses. Binance is one of the most popular centralised cryptocurrency exchanges right now. I am quite sure that investors trust them and won't hesistate to try their latest project. Let's hope that bisq won't have any problem with surviving after Binance Dex launches.
2159  Economy / Economics / Re: Swiss Financial Services Company Raises $100 Million to Launch Crypto Bank on: October 01, 2018, 09:05:40 PM
We can control our own crypto, we dont need a bank to do it for us.

That doesn't mean that there won't be people who don't want to take responsibility for securing their own money. Wouldn't you feel much better blaming bank for the loss rather than yourself? Also, many people still have problems with some basic operations. This will change since current generation is used to technology but I can't imagine seeing my parents using the Lightning Network or simply signing a message using a Bitcoin address. I don't see anything wrong in such banks as long as people are aware of other possibilities.
2160  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: bither help on: October 01, 2018, 08:08:27 PM
can i import the wallet somewhere else

Yes, you can. If you have your 12 or 24 word seed then you can use some other software, for example, Electrum. Here you can find a tutorial on how to do it. Note that the latest version might ask you which type of address you were using. It could be legacy (1...), nested-segwit (3...) or native segwit (bc1...). It looks like bither doesn't support SegWit so you have to select legacy type of address while importing your seed.
