2181  Economy / Speculation / Re: What price of BTC will be? on: May 12, 2015, 02:42:59 AM
It depends upon what the demand will be in the near future and what tools will be available to allow that demand. Outside of the near future and what that may hold, the price will be beyond your expectations. So, say your prayers at night. Wink

This is great to see considering Byrne probably has plenty of friends in the tech sector. Time for doctors and nerds to fix the money and government problems and ditching the lawyers and political class.

They can't fix problems that many of their donations help to create in the first place.
If you're talking about many in the tech community having donated quite heavily to Obama and democratic politicians in the past, then I agree with you on that. I'm hoping that Rand offering them something different will give thema better option than Obama the war chief or Bush/Romney/etc the war chief. Rand can be guaranteed to support innovation and giving lots of breathing room for techies to advance their ideas into concrete outcomes rather than stifling them or selling them a bill of goods.

Rand Paul Courts San Francisco’s Techies

It’s a beautiful Saturday afternoon in one of the most liberal cities in America, and Rand Paul — the Republican United States senator from Kentucky running for president — is talking about Snapchat.

“We use Snapchat more than anybody else out there,” he brags during a speech in San Francisco. The crowd loves it. It’s a Snapchat kind of crowd.

Paul is speaking from a concrete-floored South of Market coworking space, StartupHouse, that will soon become the campaign’s home in San Francisco. The audience is made up of more than a hundred Rand fans and at least a dozen reporters. One entire wall is covered in chalkboard paint and pink and blue handwritten messages. Startup-y miscellany clutters nearly every empty surface — papers, all manner of cords and chargers, one $4,400 check, uncashed. One guy is wearing a shirt that says “freelance developer.” Another has a laptop sticker that reads “I don’t believe the liberal agenda.” He’s livetweeting. The event is called — and, really, there is nothing else it could be called — Disrupting Democracy. It’s all very two point omg.

And it is certainly very new.

As Vincent Harris, a Paul staffer who sat near the back tweeting from the senator’s Twitter account, told BuzzFeed News, Paul’s campaign is the only one with a tech advisory board, a CTO, a digital strategist, and offices in both San Francisco and Austin, Texas. Another attendee, Matt Shupe, a thirtysomething political consultant, points out that it’s rare for a politician on either side of the aisle to treat California as anything other than an ATM, hosting free, open events such as this one.

Paul’s commitment to courting Silicon Valley is genuine, if a bit puzzling — California hasn’t gone red in a presidential contest since 1988, and as San Francisco Chronicle political columnist Carla Marinucci noted toward the end of the panel, “the tech community voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama in the last election.” But Silicon Valley is nothing if not relentlessly optimistic in the face of mounting obstacles and historic reality. There’s a case to be made that liberal San Francisco’s backlash against the Google Busses and the Twitter tax breaks have served to alienate the tech community, and that, if pitched right, Paul’s particular brand of civil libertarianism could square with Silicon Valley’s iconoclastic ethos.
...
After the event — a clean 38 minutes, including opening remarks and a panel discussion — he was mobbed by people requesting selfies and autographs; one fan, a youngish guy in a corduroy blazer, chased the Senator about his startup, a voter engagement app. Think Rand Paul as VC. And then, he was out.

Paul picks up endorsements of 20 NH state reps

Rand Paul picked up the endorsements of 20 Republican state representatives for his presidential bid Monday.

The Kentucky senator said in an interview the support shows “New Hampshire is one of our best spots. We think the ‘leave-me-alone’ coalition is strong in New Hampshire, and right out of the gate, getting 19 state reps to support us is a big deal. We’re excited about where we’re starting.”

First reported by WMUR.com on Twitter, Paul’s campaign announced the endorsements as he held a town hall meeting in Londonderry.

Those supporting him are Reps. Laura Jones of Rochester, Dan McGuire of Epsom, Keith Ammon of New Boston, Keith Murphy and Bart Fromuth of Bedford, Christopher Adams of Brookline, Glen Aldrich of Gilford, Ralph Boehm of Litchfield, Eric Eastman and David Murotake of Nashua, Larry Gagne, Victoria Sullivan and Joe LaChance of Manchester, Joseph Hannon of Lee, Shem Kellogg of Plaistow, James McConnell of Keene, Jim Parison of New Ipswich, Eric Schleien of Hudson, Brian Seaworth of Pembroke and Nick Zaricki of Goffstown.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has appointed Overstock.com CEO Patrick Bryne to his tech counsel, a group that includes Michele Weslander Quaid of Google, and Brandon Hudgeons of Schoox and will help shape the presidential candidate’s tech platform.

The move has left bitcoin lovers in a tizzy. Byrne was one of the first CEOs to embrace bitcoin on a mass-market retail platform and is considering using a blockchain-like system for selling shares of his company.

Sen. Paul is also the first presidential candidate to accept bitcoin contributions, and he recently opened a “Silicon Valley office” at a space called StartupHouse.

2191  Other / Politics & Society / Sex and love in the age of robots on: May 11, 2015, 11:15:41 PM
In a world full of 3D-printed organs, internet-connected homes, and cars that drive themselves, there's one futuristic technological development that is sorely missing: the robot.

Sure, we have digital assistants like Siri and Google Now, but they're anything but user-friendly. And if you want to hang out with an actual physical robot, they're either only available at the highest level of the military or dumbed-down to the point of silliness (see: the Roomba circling your living room).

Naturally, something we've long wanted to task robots with is sex. From Austin Powers' Fembots to Metropolis's Maria, the idea of creating something out of wires and metal to become our companion continues to surface. Pop culture resurrects this idea repeatedly, sometimes portraying robots as mere sexual objects (Weird Science) but more often using them to comment on the transition of our digital devices from utilitarian to something more meaningful (Love in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction).

Maybe the reason why we don't have mass-produced robots is because we're still not certain what we'd want to do with them. Do we want a Jetsons-like maid to do our bidding? An assistant? A teacher? An assembly-line worker? Do we want robots to be our friends? Or do we want them to be friends with benefits?

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Breast milk saved the day for a mother trapped in the wilderness.

29-year-old Susan O'Brien was brought to tears in an emotional reunion with her family in New Zealand after being rescued by helicopter.

The 29-year-old athlete was competing in a twelve mile trail run in the Orongorongo Valley, near the New Zealand capital of Wellington when she got lost.

The mother of an 8-month-old girl saying she survived a night in Bushlands by covering herself in dirt and drinking her own breast milk.

"I got lost and got stuck in some bushes and then I thought that was it," said O'Brien.

"One thing that helped me, cause I'm breast feeding my baby, so I had a bit of my milk which I thought that should keep me going for energy," she said.

Hillary Clinton hasn’t answered a question from the media in 20 days

In those 29 days – including April 12, the day she announced, and today – Clinton has taken a total of eight questions from the press.  That breaks out to roughly one question every 3.6 days. Of late, she's taken even fewer questions than that. According to media reports, the last day Clinton answered a question was April 21 in New Hampshire; that means that she hasn't taken a question from the media in 20 straight days.

Carly Fiorina, one of the many newly minted Republicans running for president, is doing everything she can to shine a light on Clinton's close-mouthed approach with the press. This came from Fiorina deputy campaign manager Sasha Isgur Flores this morning:

In the last eight days, Carly has been interviewed almost 30 times and answered well over 300 questions. She continues to impress voters, pundits, and reporters alike with her willingness to share her thoughts and ideas – and to answer any question, from whether she likes hot dogs to how she would tackle the crisis in the Middle East. ... This is in stark contrast to many other candidates – and most especially to Hillary Clinton.

Rand Paul staffer licks liberal's camera, murmers softly, "this is a closed event"

A cameraman documenting Rand Paul's town hall event in Londonderry, New Hampshire, on Monday got more than he bargained for when one of Paul's staffers walked right up and licked his camera lens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VOEU3W6PL8&feature=youtu.be
The culprit behind the "I licked it, so now it's mine" move was David Chesley, Rand Paul's political director in New Hampshire. The man behind the camera was from American Bridge 21st Century, a liberal super PAC that tracks Republican candidates. Chesley responded the way that any rational adult would: by licking the camera used to film the event.

Rand Paul Vows to Filibuster Patriot Act Reauthorization

In a move guaranteed to rock the political establishment left and right, Rand Paul vowed Monday to filibuster any reauthorization of the (Orwellianly named) Patriot Act during an exclusive interview with the Union Leader in New Hampshire.

I’m going to lead the charge in the next couple of weeks as the Patriot Act comes forward. We will be filibustering. We will be trying to stop it. We are not going to let them run over us. And we are going to demand amendments and we are going to make sure the American people know that some of us at least are opposed to unlawful searches. – Sen. Rand Paul

The point is the military shouldn't be training among the native population since they should never be considered to use upon said population as per the Posse Comitatus act of 1898. However, their way around it seems to have been to transfer military grade weaponry and personnel carriers to state and local police instead.

I have known of Bernie Sanders since the first election of Barack  I know some how known of him for longer.  I think he would make a GREAT president.  I wish he was my senator.  Smiley  He represents Vermont doesn't he?
You must be joking, a socialist president on the heels of a fascist type isn't what we need to get back on track. We need to scale back govt significantly so innovators can be freer to create new things and the jobs that come along with them. Gun rights wouldn't be very healthy under a true socialist either.

Rand Paul: Hillary turned Libya into a ‘jihadist wonderland’

Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul lambasted Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton Sunday, saying she made Libya a “jihadist wonderland” as secretary of state.

“Hillary Clinton’s war in Libya has made us less safe,” Paul (R-Ky.) told John Catsimatidis on The Answer 970 AM radio. “It made it a hotbed for jihadists, and, in fact, I think Libya now is a jihadist wonderland.”

Rand said it was a “big mistake” for the US to get involved in Libya’s affairs in the first place.
“A lot of times when we topple secular dictators, we’ve gotten chaos and then . . . the rise of radical Islam,” he said.

Rand Paul supports bird flu role of agency he tried to cut

WASHINGTON — Presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul as recently as 2013 proposed cutting an Agriculture Department agency responsible for studying the spread of poultry diseases such as bird flu, a virus that has killed millions of birds in Iowa the past two weeks.

Paul, a Kentucky Republican, had proposed budget plans as recently as two years ago that backed scrapping the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Service, which includes a division responsible for studying ways to predict, treat and control poultry diseases.

Steve Grubbs, Paul's chief Iowa strategist, declined to address specific spending reductions at the USDA or whether the senator continues to support cutting those agencies as he has in past budget proposals.

But Grubbs said Paul favors the government playing an active role in working with farmers to combat bird flu because the virus has spread throughout several states. As a result, the outbreak triggers what's known as the commerce clause in the Constitution, effectively giving the government the power to get involved, he said.
