Ok, I managed to bring the 7970 up to 500Kh/s.  Uninstalled all drivers, cleaned with Driver Sweeper. Installed AMD's OpenCL SDK (AMD-APP-SDK-v2.8-Windows-64), then AMD_Catalyst_13.3_Beta3.exe.  Disabled ULPS.  For now I'm leaving the 7970 on stock clocks (1050/1500) since I just bought it, and observing its behavior.  Pity it still lags behind the unlocked 5950 little bit.  Plays games nicely, tho.  Twin fans goes to 100% during mining and one is noisy. :/  Display artifacts still show up on Firefox while mining.

Will be tweaking, contacting manufacturer support, etc.

In any case, this is gatting me 1000Kh/s:

cgminer --scrypt -o http://POOL -u USER -p PASS -I 19,13 -g 1 -Q 2 -w 256,256 --thread-concurrency 8000,8192 --auto-fan

May do that tweak to set the 7970 -g at 2, later.

The 6970 is actually an unlocked reference Sapphire 6950 clocked at 926/1375 @ 1.175v and gets 500 Kh/s.
The 7970 is an XFX Double D GHz Edition FX797GTDFC.  I'm plugged into it as a display, since it's not as reliable, thus far.  Leaving it at stock clocks of 1050/1500 and stock voltage, it's pulling less than 300 Kh/s and I'm seeing image corruption flash on my screen from time to time in Firefox.  O.O

WTF.

GPU 0: 6970 503.7Kh/s
GPU 1: 7970 278.1Kh/s

cgminer --scrypt -o http://POOL -u USER -p PASS -I 19,13 -g 2 -w 256,256 --shaders 1536,2048 --thread-concurrency 8000,8192

EDIT:  Sorry, but does anyone have any suggestions to get the 7970 to 600 Kh/s +?  I tried a few configs on the following page, but to no avail. https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison#wiki-ATI_AMD_GPUs

I just keep getting an error from cgminer about "no suitable long poll blah blah" and it crashes.

Same, here.  This is what I've found works thus far with my Sapphire 6950 unlocked to 6970.

1. Disable AMD Overdrive in CCC.
2. Use MSI Afterburner (after unlocking in cfg file) to set mV to 1.200
3. Use ATI Tray Tools to set Core 960 Mem 322 and Fan to 64%.
4. Use GPU-Z and set all Sensors display to Current Reading to ensure my settings are active and persisting.

For some reason ATI Tray Tools won't correctly set voltage, for me.  With the above, I'm getting 400Mh/s consistently while currently hovering around 70C.  I have headroom to experiment a little more, later.  I'll just revel in having reached the 400Mh/s sweet spot for a while and monitor system stability.

I've been having stability issues, so I've dropped back to 1.175mV and 950/300, looks like I'm still maintaining 400Mh/s, though.  Guess I can lower the fan, then!

Hiya,
Cheers Smiley

I gave that a shot but its saying 'no suitable device found' . Bummer.

Other tools show up the card just fine, they just dont let the ram clock go below 600. Still, its doing ~370/MH with that setting ATM.

Looking at the comments in the few articles about Bitcoin that appeared on Slashdot so far, it seems the Slahsdot crowd really hates Bitcoin. However I do not see an obvious reason for that? Any ideas why the Slashdot crowd hates Bitcoin?

It’s a condition called Being a Cynical Asshole.

Every generation has them.  While I'm cynical of buying and selling BTC, for now, I have no problem mining as long as I'm covering my electrical power costs.  However, the hate I see from some over BTC proves to me that some people are more about pissing all over everyone else's attempts rather than contributing energy and ideas to finding a solution.

@slaithe: Thanks for the update when you found a resolution. I've just recently unlocked the shaders on my 6950 2gb (getting ~355mh/s @ 840gpu/1250mem), but I'm weary of flashing straight up to the 6970 bios because I read some other people mentioning the different voltages between the 6950/6970. I'll look into doing something similar after I do more research into it.

Unlocked just the shaders?  You find a BIOS for that or did you have to modify your own?
From what I understand, the original reference 6950s were just locked down 6970s, hence the term "unlock."

I haven't had any other difficulties with my "6970" now other than heat considerations since I kept my GTX 285 in so I can do Hybrid PhysX.  In addition, and this is an issue with AMD's drivers, I can't watch accelerated vids or game while the 6970 is mining, even if I'm using CUDA off the GTX 285 to accel the vid via CoreAVC.  As hackneyed as it is, I have to switch over my DVI cable to my GTX 285 and then everything is fine, as long as I don't have to restart the miner.  That requires I switch the DVI back, unless I just need to learn something else.  I'm not new to cmd by any means, but the switches/parameters change whenever I move the DVI cable from gpu to gpu.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase of this Sapphire 6950.  I'm a gamer, so bitcoin is more of a side hobby, for now.  As it is, the GTX 285 runs most of my games to my liking so I can still game while mining and take mining offline when I want to play something more demanding or better detail (more AA, DX11, etc.)

EDIT: And this all probably means I'll be seeking a refund on the 0.2 BTC I spent to get clocktweak. Wink
EDIT2: Another explanation I've read is the 6970s may have also been locked down to 6950s b/c they were too power hungry/wasteful when clocked up to 6970 speed.  No matter for me. I have 1000 watt PSU.

Sorry to double post, but I thought my discovery of resolution warranted the bump since no one else in the newbie section has provided this info.

ATI Tray Tools worked!  I was able to set my clocks to 900/300 on my "6970" changed my command line for my phoenix miner using some of the info on the following wiki page.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

So, I've gone from about 290Mh/s to 379Mh/s. Smiley  Nice big tweak! after a little more tweaking and a case upgrade to accommodate more airflow, maybe I'll hit around 400Mh/s.  I haven't even messed with voltages, yet.

Thanks.
Nice GUI app, but the lower Memclock limit is 1035. :/  I followed this post's directions to add the "EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 1" line, but it was a no go and I still can't go below 1035.  Did I miss something?

EDIT: I was using v1.10.  Now using v2.1 and can go down to 685, but no further. :/

I can't reply to the relevant thread because of my newbie restrictions, so here's hoping this reaches the right eyes.

I've flashed my reference Sapphire 6950 2GB to 6970.

ClockTweak thread
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=9982.msg143526#msg143526

My command line:
clocktweak -a0 -c900 -m300 -y
While GPU-Z (Graphis Card tab) and the -r show the Memclock at 300, GPU-Z (Sensors tab) and CCC show the Memclock at the default 1375.

I first noticed the problem when setting Memclock with clocktweak seemed to have no impact at all, while small differences were noticed with Coreclock adjustments.

Suggestions?  If I modify the BIOS and flash to 900MHz/300MHz settings, can I use CCC or clocktweak to switch between 880/1375 and 900/300, easily?  This is a brand new card and I do plan on gaming with it, too.  So I'd like to easily switch between mining and gaming without having to reflash/reboot every time.

EDIT: Catalyst driver version is 11.6 (11-6_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe).
