This Week in Bitcoin: Big Bangs, Huge Swings, and a Word From the White House

Every week we tell ourselves “This one’s got to be quieter” and yet every week we’re proven wrong. Welcome to the latest and craziest edition of This Week in Bitcoin. We’ve no idea where this madness is gonna end; all we know is that there’s no time to assess the situation – there’s too much stuff happening in bitcoin. For those of you who were forced to sleep at some stage this week, here’s a roundup of what you may have missed.

Bitcoin Goes Bang
We tried to teach you about ways in which bitcoin is changing the world. We tried to inform you of cryptocurrency regulation in developing countries. We even tried to impart cautionary advice regarding margin trading. But all you wanted to hear about was bitcoin appearing on The Big Bang Theory. We said:

[Bitcoin] has been featured on many television broadcasts over the years. This includes shows like The Good Wife, Mr. Robot, The Simpsons, and even on Jeopardy. The Big Bang Theory’s upcoming show was also filmed a while back when bitcoin was averaging $5K per BTC….This week’s BBT episode is sure to bring more attention towards the ‘Internet of Money’ alongside a touch of laughter.
All of this week’s most popular stories were of the low-brow variety, but that’s okay: amidst all the heart-pounding drama of watching the ticker hit $11,300, shed $2,000 and then rise again like a phoenix from the flames, some respite was needed. You got all that in our tale of a man who lost 1,000 bitcoins thanks to a faulty thumb drive. As the unfortunate Australian put it, “If my wife knows, I’m dead”.

Cloud Mining ? Tell me About it please

I am wondering what exactly is cloud mining?

IS this more less I can invest into a mining system? but don't have to actually have the hardware in my house? I just handle the controls from a remote location?

more less invest in as a shareholder? or really how does this work? information please

Cloud mining is very risky, it is hard to find a trustworthy cloud mining site. Because now a days, their are no cloud mining site that are profitable for your investment. If i were you, i must try to invest in an ICO. It is more reliable than cloud mining.
223  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-12-03]Bitcoin Cash Network Status: Transactions On the Rise on: December 03, 2017, 10:42:11 AM
The Bitcoin Cash network is trucking along as the blockchain is currently finishing up its fourth month of existence. As more adoption and infrastructure support has been added to the BCH network over the past few months, many bitcoin cash supporters are optimistic about the cryptocurrency’s future.

The Bitcoin Cash Network Sees Improvement With the DAA Upgrade As BCH Transaction Percentages Rise
Bitcoin Cash Network Status: Transactions On the RiseThere have been over 28,000 blocks mined since the hard fork this past August that had produced the nascent network bitcoin cash. The blockchain has been doing quite well since the development community hard-forked the BCH network on November 13 which fixed the cryptocurrency’s Difficulty Algorithm Adjustment (DAA). Since then erratic block time intervals have ceased and mining profitability between the BCH and BTC chains has leveled out, remaining consistent over the past two weeks.

Bitcoin Cash Network Status: Transactions On the Rise
Bitcoin Cash profitability against the legacy chain leveled out since the November 13 hard fork.
At the moment the BCH chain is operating at 12.47 percent of the legacy chain’s difficulty, and at the moment it’s only 3.3 percent more profitable to mine BTC. Bitcoin cash transactions have also been steadily rising as the BCH network transaction rate is gradually increasing in number every week. Additionally, next year according to the Bitcoin ABC development team’s midterm roadmap, developers plan to fix the BCH address format and possibly even raise the protocol’s 8MB base block size again.

As of now, i don't have my first bitcoin yet. But when the time comes that i will earn my bitcoin, i will save it. And if the value of bitcoin will double in the future, i will withdraw it to build a small business for my family.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) only months old is being floated as a possible addition to a futures offering family by Cboe Global Markets (Cboe). Cboe is looking to differentiate itself from a growing chorus of rivals as it prepares to launch futures contracts by year’s end.

Bitcoin Cash Could be Family
December 2017 began with a giant announcement. Release pr7654-17 from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), titled CFTC Statement on Self-Certification of Bitcoin Products by CME, CFE and Cantor Exchange, began, “Today, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) and the CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE) self-certified new contracts for bitcoin futures products.”

In financial-speak that means legacy institutions are cleared to enter the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Classic bureaucrat understatement reminded the public of the regulator’s burden: “Bitcoin, a virtual currency, is a commodity unlike any the Commission has dealt with in the past,” the Chairman said.  “As a result, we have had extensive discussions with the exchanges regarding the proposed contracts.”

It was presumably a welcome boon to Cboe, which seemed to be lost in media excitement over CME’s firm dating of a futures rollout along with Nasdaq’s mid-2018 bid.

Frank Chaparro reports Cboe looks like it might be willing to up the competition by appealing to more than just one cryptocurrency. Paraphrasing Cboe President Chris Concannon, “the exchange thinks a family of cryptocurrency products, including futures for ether and bitcoin cash, could come to fruition as the market continues to mature.”

On November 29 there were quite a few bitcoin market spikes, and so-called flash crashes on exchanges, according to traders on social media and forums. One particular group of traders that really felt the storm when markets got turbulent were margin traders on exchanges like Bitfinex. In fact, if one were to visit the Reddit forum /r/bitfinex that day, they would see a whole bunch of angry customers who were burned buying bitcoin on a margin.

Buying Bitcoin On a Margin

Many people trade bitcoin on exchanges and understand how to place a buy or sell order and interact with the trading platform’s operations. However, there are other methods of exchange on cryptocurrency trading platforms and brokerage services called ‘margin trading.’ Buying on a margin is borrowing money from the exchange, so you can obtain a profit in the short term by placing a long or short bet on a specific digital asset with loaned capital.

Margin trading is far riskier than basic trading. Essentially, individuals with a limited amount of crypto-capital can add leverage to their base investment. For instance, if you hold two bitcoins the exchange allows you to open a margin position with leverage (loaned money) based on your initial capital. Exchanges like Bitfinex, Bitmex, Kraken, Bittrex, and Poloniex all offer these types of trades, and some of them allow other customers to provide the lending material. The risk a margin trader deals with is that they are gambling with loaned money and the market may not follow their predictions.

Malta Financial Services Agency (MFSA) has issued its Discussion Paper on Initial Coin Offerings, Virtual Currencies and related Service Providers, “to present to the industry a proposed policy to be adopted by the MFSA for the regulation of the ICOs, [cryptocurrencies] and service providers involved in ICO and/or other VC activity.” It’s a welcome sign for the country’s bitcoiners after its oldest bank effectively banned all bitcoin transactions. Clearly there is a tension between Malta’s legacy financial sector and, perhaps ironically, a government eager to help usher in a new financial future.

Malta and its Crypto Identity Problem
MSFA is the country’s main financial regulator, and it appears to be seeking guidance on how to proceed with financial innovations, be they initial coin offerings (ICOs), cryptocurrencies (referred to as virtual currency or VC), and blockchain technology. It’s a rare chance for a nascent industry to have a say in regulating itself.

The stated aim of the MSFA paper is “to devise a policy framework that supports the innovation and new technologies for financial services in the area of VCs,” it declares, noting it is keeping an eye on “ensuring effective investor protection, financial market integrity and financial stability.”

President Donald Trump’s nominee for Chair of the Federal Reserve, current Board Governor Jerome “Jay” Hayden Powell, participated in the constitutionally mandated US Senate confirmation process by way of a hearing on 28 November 2017. Bitcoin and “cryptocurrencies are something we monitor very carefully,” Mr. Powell answered in direct questioning about current and future Fed policy toward decentralized currencies.

Federal Reserve Under Oath about Bitcoin
Incredible valuations. Historic price rise. Mass adoption numbers. The Year of Bitcoin has achieved yet another official milestone: it is now a formal policy consideration by regulators of the world’s largest economy.

Tuesday afternoon in Washington, DC, Jay Powell sat before a sparsely attended, mostly pro-forma senate hearing. A current Fed governor nominated by President Obama to serve a 14 year term, Mr. Powell is widely considered to ease through to confirmation in the Republican-controlled upper body.

Georgia Senator, Republican David Alfred Perdue, Jr took asked the nominee a series of questions. Completely switching topics, he ended his line of thought with queries at the 1 hour and 35 minute mark about a subject sweeping professional finance circles: bitcoin.

Senator Perdue began, “We have another bubble that is some 4 to 5 times the size of the dot com bubble in the late 1990s, and that has to do with the cryptocurrencies like bitcoin,” he said.

Bitcoin is a fascinating monetary tool that many believe will help fight the central banking system, corrupt economic planning, and help stop a small group of individuals from controlling the world’s money supply. Often times bitcoin is associated with anarcho-capitalism, free markets, and sometimes the Austrian school of economics. Today we will look at a large group of anarcho-capitalists, ‘gold bugs,’ and well-known economists to see how they feel about the bitcoin revolution.

and Anarcho-Capitalist Personalities Weigh In On Bitcoin Over the Years
Some people believe the decentralized cryptocurrency bitcoin is a tool that Austrian economists, anarcho-capitalists, libertarians, anarchists, and agorists should embrace. However, the many luminaries that have studied the works of Ludwig von Mises, and Murray Rothbard are still unsure about bitcoin. Some have embraced the cryptocurrency right away, while other individuals who pride themselves as ‘gold bugs’ changed their tune after initially dismissing bitcoin. Either way, bitcoin is very much a part of the anarcho/libertarian based ideologies and has been for quite some time.

234  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cloud Mining on: November 29, 2017, 08:18:19 AM
Cloud mining is not profitable for your investment, most of them are scams. If you really like to invest your bitcoins , it is much better if you try to invest to an ICO.  They are more reliable than to cloud mining.
235  Economy / Economics / Re: Holdings of gold vs Holdings of btc on: November 29, 2017, 04:56:52 AM
It is most secured if you choose to hold gold rather than holding to a bitcoin. Because gold is much more stable and more reliable long term investment than bitcoin that just started on 2008.
236  Economy / Economics / Re: How to invest in bitcoin? on: November 29, 2017, 02:47:02 AM
I have seen many ways to earn bitcoin, and still not familiar with some of it. I am a student and I wanna ask how to invest in bitcoin, and if students like me are capable of doing that already?

Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Their are many ways to invest in bitcoin, buying bitcoin is already an investment. But if you want an extra bitcoin without buying it, you can work here by applying on a signature campaigns. You just need to level up first your rank, because most of all campaigns don't accept a newbie.

Bitflyer, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is muscling in on U.S. territory after securing a highly coveted Bit License. Just three of the licenses have previously been awarded, which entitle a company to operate a bitcoin exchange within New York. The Japanese exchange will now roll its services out to customers in a total of 41 U.S. states.

From Tokyo to New York
In its native Japan, Bitflyer provides trading of bitcoin, bitcoin cash, and ethereum against the yen, with 24-hour BTC volume of around US $170 million. This accounts for 96% of all trading activity on the platform. Having secured permission to launch across the majority of the U.S, the Tokyo company will be able to significantly broaden its customer base and to tap into Americans’ growing demand for cryptocurrencies.

"Bitflyer CEO Yuzo Kano"

Japanese cryptocurrency investors have traded $100 billion of assets via Bitflyer this year and the exchange will be hoping it can capture a similar share of the U.S. market. It will face stiff competition though from established exchanges such as Coinbase, Gemini, Bittrex, and Kraken. One exchange it won’t have to compete with is Asian neighbor Bitfinex, which is in the process of cutting ties with the U.S. market. Gemini is making great strides in its quest to grow its customer base; today the New York-based exchange announced that it has opened its services to Oregon residents, taking the number of states covered to 46.

It takes a brave soul to bet it all on bitcoin. Yet six months ago, that’s exactly what one Redditor did, using $325,000 of equity to purchase 191 BTC. As one commenter put it: “Firstly, let me wish you good luck. Second, let me tell you how much of an idiot you are.” As bitcoin kisses the symbolic $10k threshold, a new wave of intrepid souls has emerged, willing to lay it all on the line in the name of bitcoin. Will history prove them to be shrewd or stupid? That all depends on which analyst you consult.
