While the North has the bomb, it doesn't have a warhead small enough to put on a long-range rocket. And it certainly doesn't have a re-entry vehicle to keep that warhead from burning up in the atmosphere before it could reach threatened targets, for example Manhattan. But today North Korea suggested it would soon be ready to show the world it has mastered both technologies. This may be just the latest case of Pyongyang's propaganda, but if true it would represent a huge advance in the country's suspected nuclear capabilities, and undermine suggestions that its claims are all bluff and bluster. "We have proudly acquired the re-entry technology, possessed by a few countries styling themselves as military powers", said North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in state-run media. The authoritarian leader was said to have made the comment after meeting scientists and technicians following, what it claimed, was a successful test of a re-entry vehicle. Kim ordered preparations for a "nuclear warhead explosion test" and test-firings of "several kinds of ballistic rockets able to carry nuclear warheads", the report added. With no way independently verifying any of these claims, it's difficult to separate Pyongyang's rhetoric from its reality. >>

Scores of users have posted on Twitter, forums, Reddit and gaming sites to complain about Windows 10 automatically installing, seemingly without asking, and often in the middle of doing something important. Reddit user LHoT10820 posted a warning, which has attracted over 2,800 comments, about the forced Windows 10 upgrade after it "bricked" his father's computer. Geekygirlhere said: "Yep this happened to me this morning. Working and all of a sudden Windows closed all my programs, logged me out and started the upgrade. I quickly shut down my computer and was able to stop it but my son wasn't so lucky. Same thing happened to him today." 8165128200 said: "We've been getting calls trickling in all week from doctor's offices, dental practices, B&Bs and roofing companies – among others – that have been hit by this and it's a fucking mess. In some cases the upgrade went OK and the user is just really confused. In others, Windows 10 is asking for a login password the user set years ago and hasn't used since, that was fun. In still another it's screwed up access to their shared folders." Even senior reporter Patrick Klepek for gaming site Kotaku was seemingly forced into an upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft recently changed the Windows 10 upgrade from "optional" to "recommended", making it one level below the highest "critical" designation within Windows Update, the software update system built into Windows. They also indicate the industry may be willing to back up their public support for Apple with concrete action. Within weeks, Facebook's messaging service WhatsApp plans to expand its secure messaging service so that voice calls are also encrypted, in addition to its existing privacy features. The service has some one billion monthly users. Facebook is also considering beefing up security of its own Messenger tool. Snapchat, the popular ephemeral messaging service, is also working on a secure messaging system and Google is exploring extra uses for the technology behind a long-in-the-works encrypted email project. >> |

"Outdated drug policies around the world have resulted in soaring drug-related violence, overstretched criminal justice systems, runaway corruption and mangled democratic institutions", wrote Fernando Henrique Cardoso, César Gaviria and Ernesto Zedillo, respectively the former presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times. The former presidents said that experts, statistics and a review of their "own failures on this front while in office" led them to "an unavoidable conclusion: the 'war on drugs' is an unmitigated disaster". While in office in the 1990s, the three leaders fought the drug trade by the usual, often violent, methods. Cardoso tried to eradicate marijuana production in Brazil, Zedillo began war against Mexican cartels that exploded in the second half of the decade, and Gaviria fought Pablo Escobar's cocaine empire. Escobar tried to assassinate Gaviria in a plane bombing, and the president's administration killed the drug lord in 1993, a killing that Gaviria called "a step toward the end of drug trafficking" and proof "it is possible to defeat evil". But the three ex-presidents have spent the 2000s calling for decriminalization and regulation of drugs, and in 2009 Cardoso wrote for the Observer that decriminalization "breaks the silence about the drug problem". Drugs are "not first and foremost a matter for the criminal justice system", he wrote. No alarms were going off, Dorrie Nuttall wasn't checking her 7-year-old diabetic son's blood sugar and her family was fast asleep; it was at that moment things got "scary very fast". Thankfully, the little boy's black Labrador "Jedi" was nearby. Jedi sensed Luke's blood sugar was alarmingly low, jumped onto Nuttall's bed and laid on top of her until she woke up. When Nuttall pricked her son's finger, she discovered his glucose level was 57 mg/dl - a low level. "Luke was laying right next to me, just inches from me, and without Jedi I would have had no idea that he was dropping out of a safe range", Nuttall explained in a Facebook post that has since gone viral. At the age of two, Luke was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a form of the disease that only 5 percent of people with diabetes have, according to the American Diabetes Association. "We don't have a single member of our family [with diabetes]. I knew nothing about it. Nothing", Nuttall told CBS News. "A lot of kids die almost at diagnosis. People don't know the warning signs." That's why Nuttall decided to share her son's story on Facebook, which highlights the unbreakable bond between a boy and his service dog. The first grader has tools, monitors and a continuous glucose monitoring system inserted under his skin to track his blood sugar levels. But perhaps his most useful alarm system: his dog Jedi. At just 11 weeks old, Jedi began training as a diabetic alert dog (DAD). Nearly five years later, the dog is able to use his nose to identify warning signs. "They love each other", said Nuttall of the friendship between the pair. "I can't explain their connection; it's very strong and very beautiful". School, the doctor or the front yard - wherever Luke is, Jedi isn't far behind. Similar to a bomb sniffing dog, Jedi is able to detect Luke's low or high blood sugar by smell. When Luke has low levels, Jedi brings Nuttall a bringsel, a device a dog uses to signal the need for the diabetic to check blood sugar, and bows. When he has high levels, Jedi brings the device and waves. With type 1 diabetes, there are highs and lows every day. "[Jedi's] alerts often beat the meters and he saves Luke from lots of the crummy feelings and health issues that go along with each.
