I stepped away from this thread when all anyone was talking about was "luck".

I come back to see that the current topic is how a block is "made".

I can't wait until we get on an important topic, how much beer I can get with the bitcoin I mine? Now that's an important topic!

222  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: July 31, 2014, 11:26:10 AM
Excellent product at an excellent price.

This is much better and more reliable than the other wire shorting adaptera and paper clips.

Except the MOQ is 500. Do you really need 500?

I have purchased similar adapters on eBay

223  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Today, Double price increase of S3 from 0.64 to 0.66 to 0.68 in the same batch 5 on: July 31, 2014, 04:19:09 AM
Today the price of batch 5 for the S3 when from 0.64 BTC to 0.66 BTC and then a few hours later to 0.68 BTC.

Even though difficulty keeps increasing, this price increase does not make any sense.
based on https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty the next difficulty increase will be over 5%

The only thing I can think of that may have caused the increase is that the S3 is really priced in dollars converted to Bitcoins, because the Bitcoin value drop from about $600 to $560, then Bitmain to continue receiving the equivalent in dollars increase the bitcoin price.

But if this is the case that attitude is wrong because the miners do not generate dollars they generate Bitcoins, and that is a clear way  of reducing the ROI for the miners, thats like saying we are having a loss ( really it is having less profit not a loss) and we need to increase our profit but we do not care about your profit, and that is not ethical and creates a loss-win situation.

The correct attitude for Bitmain would be Bitcoin is going down, well the miner is also generating less, if he wins we win, but it seems that is not the line of thought.

I worry to some degree since I have seen changes in attitude, for example KNC last year they look like they were a great company and by a sequence of small changes they completely transformed themselves from good to bad, they simply do not care about the miner and only a year ago they gave a completely different impression.

Right now Bitmain is the best, but I have seen changes that do not look good and if this continues they could become the next KNC, for example when Bitcoin drops the price of S3 increases which makes no sence for the miner since the S3 is a bitcoin generator the only case which could justify a price increase where to be if the actual cost of making the miner increased but that is not the case, a short time ago they were selling from stock, now they are pre sales, 1 or 2 week pre sales but nevertheless pre sales, and when the s4 is releasing this time frame could increase, to lets say 4 weeks, so that is also a step in a bad direction.

If Bitmain whats to stay on top, they must think and always have an environment that creates a win win situation for for them and for the miner.

They should go back to sell from stock, and ship within 48 hours.
They should drop the price accordingly to the difficulty increases, 10% difficulty increase then 10% drop in price, but should not try to profit at the expense of the miner.
They should always take into account that the miner must ROI, not that he/she may ROI.
As of now the S3 may ROI, nut that it will ROI, there is a risk, that risk should be shared.

Bitmain is in a unique position that they could go to being the best or take the same route that was taken by KNC, only time will tell, but recent indications like the price increase and still no selling from stock tells me they are taking the wrong route, the same patch that was taken by KNC, but it is not late we all make mistakes, I just hope things improve.

Today I like Bitmain, just as I liked KNC a year ago, but because I see a similar pattern I worry, since only a year ago KNC was like Bitmain is today, I just hope that a year later Bitmain does not become like KNC is today, I did not mention BFL since that is an extreme case it is really hard to be that bad.

I hope if Bitmain can clarify if the S3 are internally really prices in dollars and then the price converted to Bitcoins, since I really do not see what could have caused that price increase, I was actually expecting a price drop due to the 1 or 2 week window of pre order delay and the current difficulty increase.

This last price increase is at the expense of the miner.

As far as I can tell, Bitmain is in the business to make a profit, this is not a hobby for them. Since this is a free market, they can charge as much as they want, and they can change their prices as often as they like. No one is forcing you to buy a miner from Bitmain. As far as the price of a miner tied to bitcoin, that would only be true if bitcoin was the ONLY currency used worldwide. But as we all know, that is not the case. They could just as easily accept payment via CC/Paypal/TT, but I think they only accept bitcoin as a way to show their support for the main currency their hardware is used to mine. Since their miners will work on any SHA-256 currency, those that mine these other alt currencies should be complaining that they have to pay in bitcoin, if they follow your reasoning. Until bitcoin is accepted for ALL types of monetary exchanges, bitcoins will be converted to the local currency for local use.

Neptune card in Novec 7100...

Coolness!  What are you using to recondense it, or is it just a test setup?  How much did you pay for the Novec, if it's not rude to ask?

It was $350 shipped for a gallon of the Novec 7100.  I used a couple of peltier chips and some heatsinks to condense the Novec.  It worked and dripped back down while it was running.  I have a much bigger tank on the way with some large radiators installed for the final unit.

225  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 30, 2014, 08:09:28 PM
since there are so many miners here and I want to buy ANTMINER S3 I'll post my question here. Is there a chart of multipool mining profitability in fiat over a long period of time (6-12months)? If not maybe you can tell me from your experience..

I want to know whether the current $1.6/100GH/day is somewhat stable and can be expected to stay that way the coming 6 months.
(I'm a newbie regarding mining, so with this miner I can use it for multipools right? Grin)

I'd take some serious time learning more about bitcoin before you invest a cent. The difficulty changes after every 2016 blocks.  Here is a list of the historical increases.

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

In the last 6 months it has gone from ~3 million to ~19 million. SO NO WAY you will be making anything close to $1.6/100GH/day in 6 months.

Bitcoin mining is nothing more than an "arms race". You need to keep increasing your hash rate to keep up with the increasing difficulty if you are looking for "steady" income.

Has anyone received coupons from Bitmain for Batch 5?
227  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: July 30, 2014, 06:34:59 PM
Shutting down the s1 is not a good idea if it can still mine coins at lower cost than electricity as the only constant is increasing difficulty.

Basically it depreciates at every difficulty jump.  So mine it now before it is obsolete

Or do what I plan.

My son goes back to college in a couple of weeks and has FREE electric in his dorm. I'm packing 2 S1's and a 850W PSU for him to take to school and run for me. If he can get anyone on his floor to agree, I'll bring 2 more S1's when I go to visit him.

You think your son and his roommates is gonna be thrilled about the noise/heat it creates?

They are thrilled, they plan to use the bitcoins earned to pay for their beer!!

1. why is your pool info repeated twice?
2. remove stratum+tcp://, just keep stratum.mining.eligius.st:3334
3. maybe add a second pool

save and apply

wait until it beeps, then check

Sorry, pasted twice by accident...

I tried removing the stratum+tcp://, no change... no beeps either...

Also, when I try diagnostics, tracert and ping both fail.  reports Network unreachable...

My WAN shows activity, my LAN shows no activity and is set to DHCP...  Should I be changing this to a static IP address as well as the WAN address?  (two different IP's???)

is your router on 192.168.1.1?
do you have other miner that might be on 192.168.1.99?
bold numbers should be the same for router and miner, but could be different from standard

Good call Bio, bytechanger, log in to your router (what router/broad band provider is it?) and check the Default Gateway setting.

My router for example is 192.168.1.254 (most common is 192.169.1.1) - you need to set whatever this 'Default Gateway' ip address from your router in you miner config 'gateway' address.

figured it out...

Apparently you have to put in a password AND you must fill in all 3 pool's, otherwise no data appears in miner status...

Anyone know a couple of good pools I should use for backup?

BitMinter is a very good pool. It may be small, but the owner/operator is very good and responds to any/all questions on the pools forum

Gee you are very helpful, thank you!

There are several guides and exchanges where you can get your bitcoin. The mining forum isn´t really the best place to start (although some mining companies do take $)

That's why I just wanted to buy with PayPal as it's my first miner and I just want to have bit fun and not too serious about getting into bit coins buying and selling at this stage.

Thanks.

You can always check out eBay. There are 100s of miners available and you can use PayPal.
231  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 23, 2014, 04:24:00 AM

I think you're about to be scammed, dude.

well this is the weird bit, they are saying I can have the refund if I want but will obviously loose my pre-order. Not sure if I should just wait until 31st July and see if they come through or just ask for refund now. I got nothing to lose at the moment as I have time to escalate the dispute with Paypal and the seller has been responding to my messages so have been cooperative.

Refund.  Wait for Bitmaintech to sell Batch 4 and order at that time like everyone else.  Remove the middle man.  Get your order direct from the source, and lose any doubt you have about it being a scam.

yeah but what if they are an honest seller? All I am doing then is losing spot in the queue, waiting for refunds to be done and then trying to order another unit form someone else weeks later.

They aren't an HONEST reseller. They are promising times of shipping that BITMAIN can't even promise, nobody has heard a word from BITMAIN in days regarding shipping yet this copycat company knows  Roll Eyes - why on earth would you trust them?

Well I asked for a refund which they promptly did so that’s nice.

Its really hard to know in this wild wild west if they are a scam or not. I replied to them and thanked them and also suggested they should have reps on forums like this one to spread a good word about their company and instil confidence in potential buyers minds.

So I possibly lost a spot and now have to wait for refund to hit my CC which might take a while.

Can someone recommend other reputable sellers that sell the Antminer S3 ? Preferable in Asia e.g. Hong Kong for quicker shipping?

I'd just order from BitMain at bitmaintech.com/product.htm. They're based in Shenzhen and they will get you Batch 4 quicker than anyone since they produce them. We can all vouch for them. They are one of the very few manufacturers that are decent. The vast majority of them are scammers or quickly turn into them.

Can you say HashFast?

Time to do my happy dance!!

My S3's from Batch 1 just arrived....now to go to work and get them up and running

I think it took me more time to take them out of the boxes than it did to set them up.  Wink

I like the build, much better than S1's.

I'm going to let mine "soak" for a while at the factory setting and check them in the morning.

Right now they both are clocking at 218.75 and hashing at 440 & 450.

Congrats now you will make 8usd per s3,money well spent huh?

Yes it was since I spent Bitcoin that I mined using S1's, which were bought using Bitcoin I mined using Chili's, which were bought with Bitcoin mined using Jalapenos, which were bought using Bitcoin I mined using stick miners, which were bought using Bitcoin I mined using the graphic card in my PC.

So yeah, it was money well spent Grin

You enjoy throwing money down the drain?

In my younger days I was into rebuilding/modifying cars, and let me tell you: this is nowhere near the same level of "throwing money down the drain".  When it comes to hobbies, most cost a lot and return nothing but enjoyment.
I'm with you on this. I quit making $$ spent entries in my race log after I broke into the six figure bracket, that was 10 years ago. So far I'm into BTC for a $1000, and have $100 back.

Just think if we spent as much on mining gear as we did on our cars...............
236  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 22, 2014, 07:14:29 PM
I cant understand why people are purchasing s3's, the return at the current difficulty is 8usd aday, about 50 week and you spend 468.5 usd?HuhHuhHuhHuh?

How are you going to make your money back, not forgetting running costs...

For many of us this is a hobby that we all understand will not make us rich. I will be happy to break even. Just like my other hobby that I throw money at, I have a race car that I know will cost me more than I make in winnings. Why do I do it? Because I enjoy it.

If you are depending on your Bitcoin mining to survive, you need to find a better way to earn a living.

Just got my two S3's in today, and plugged them in and set them up.

They are both configured to run at 218.75 Mhz from the factory.

For whatever reason, one of them runs at 425 Gh/s and the other runs at 408 avg. The 5s averages are higher. Maybe it will be better when they are "broken in"  Huh

I put them both on an 850W power supply I had, but they both turned off, and started hashing at 26 Gh/s. Then, I put each on it's own 800W power supply, and that seems better. Only using 2 PCIE connectors so far.

Might be the voltage on the power cord coming from the garage might have dropped due to the 100 ft length... Grin Grin

Running out of power in the basement....

You might be better off running a cat5 to the garage and a mini hub for the miners

or

You can fire up the built in WiFi

Dogie's comprehensive setup guide now up in super HD!

Thanks for this. Very helpful!

I was wondering why my PSUs did not turn on. Wasn't aware of the need to jumper it. I guess I missed that if it was covered in this thread.

Now if my batch 3 units would just ship...

If you are usa based here is a good item on ebay

Good for a 100 PSU's...  Wink

Cheers,

ZiG

I would say a scathing insult about using paperclips.  But it is your gear and your money.

 I won't use paper clips.
 I won't use server psu's.

same reason for  either of the above. shock/short hazard.

I sale my gear used and tested on ebay or to local miners.

So I don't sell gear that has short/shock hazards.

Oh the scathing insult is don't be "stupid cheap"   or better known as :  "pennywise pound foolish"  and those paperclips would fit that bill.  as would the server psu's in any home with kids or pets.

I think there is a slight misunderstanding here:

1) Phil resells some fraction of his stuff, so he uses something that has a veneer of being CE, UL compliant because he will sell to noobs. There is no need to dump on his method.

2) The paper clip shorting plug solution is functionally ok. With a pair of wire cutters you can get 2 - 4 "shorting plugs". If you are worried about shorting something out, cut a 1" length of electrical tape and cover or if you want to go broadway, couldn't you urethane coat the exposed part.

I'm a paperclip person because it's fast, reliable and cheap for me.

Number 1) is why I don't use paperclips.  It is also why I don't use the server psu's.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ____________________
If I mined my gear exclusively  until it died I would use paperclips.

I still would not use the server psu with a breakout board. A   simple explanation  for me  I max at 8 to 10 s-1's or s-3's.

Evga 1300 watt,  seasonic 1000 watt plat seasonic 750 watt plat all have really long warranties.

I have been mining for 28-30 months.  They pay off in under a year as they all use less power then the server psu's.

If the mining game fully dies I will use the psu's in pc builds

I have had the seasonic plats for a while started using them  with my gpus.  they are paid off  in power savings. The evga won't pay off for about 5 more months.

I have found that if you roll up the foil wrapper from a piece of gum that works best. And it's cheaper than a paper clip!!  Grin

Well at least you used paypal... They tend to side with buyer in this case.

so should I just file a dispute now ? Wont they just try to contact the seller who will say, they item is not for sale until 30/7 so wait ?

damn I feel bit foolish now !

If you check the address they provide on their "Contact Us" page its to a trucking company.
