221  Economy / Speculation / Re: Down, down, down, down, down on: March 08, 2014, 01:50:18 AM
Please, be concise. Bitcoin futures would exist just for the same reasons that currency futures and commodity futures exist.
A big problem with Bitcoin futures, options, and derivatives is that there is no counter-party in the Bitcoin community which can be relied upon to pay up when they lose. The Bitcoin community can't even run a reliable remote wallet or exchange. Those are businesses which have zero speculative risk, yet most of them either fuck up or steal. Often both.

Blockchain.info and Coinbase.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX whistleblower...the plot thickens. on: March 08, 2014, 01:48:35 AM
The Forum was also complicit in the MTGOX mess. The MODS would shit-can any negative post or question regarding the solvency of MTGOX.  Hope the those specific MODS lost everything on GOX.

I don't recall this, I was warning people about Gox for years (as were many others) and I don't recall having any posts deleted.
223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi can send bitcoins without anyone knowing, or please explain how we on: March 07, 2014, 09:53:07 PM
It's quasi-anonymous and the blockchain is a ledger.  I understand most of you know this, but this is for the OP.
224  Economy / Economics / Re: Total money invested in cryptocoins? on: March 07, 2014, 09:39:03 PM
http://coinmarketcap.com/ lists 149 coins

Total Market Cap : $ 10,864,804,024

I'd take that with a grain of salt as the majority is Bitcoin and I believe a lot of the early mined coins are gone for good.  At least a million coins would be my estimate.

226  Economy / Economics / Re: Who owns and controls the Federal Reserve? on: March 06, 2014, 05:59:40 PM
Today it's worth a Big Mac, tomorrow ... you might use it to wipe your ass. It's a thin line...

Yeah look at the Russian ruble.  Down 10% YTD vs the dollar.  Of course that's mainly due to madman Putin.
227  Economy / Economics / Re: blockchain fork backed by a government on: March 06, 2014, 05:56:54 PM
Anything is possible and with Bitcoin, the majority rules.  If the majority wants to follow this government fork then it will take over.  The better question to ask is will the majority do it?
228  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: I CANT give bitcoin away for free! on: March 06, 2014, 05:53:15 PM

229  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: **Breaking news** Satoshi Nakamotos identity revealed on: March 06, 2014, 05:50:56 PM
Honestly who cares.  Like he said, Bitcoin is bigger than him now and he's no longer in control.  If it's him then he's a genius and deserves the riches.  If it's not he'll sue stupid Newsweek for ruining his life and get rich that way.
230  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Crowdfunding] Bitcoin to Sponsor Rescue Animals on: March 06, 2014, 05:00:09 AM
Bump.
231  Economy / Economics / Re: Who owns and controls the Federal Reserve? on: March 06, 2014, 04:59:25 AM
Yeah the Fed is basically a cartel of banks.  Even their own website states that they are only quasi-government.
232  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is Bitstamp going the same way as Gox? on: March 06, 2014, 04:57:21 AM
If any major exchange would go down soon, it would be BTC-E.

BTC-e is the next one there will be no more exchanges by the time its all said and done.

Why's that?  Free market will weed out the incompetents and replace them.  If Gox has taught anything, it's shady incompetent exchanges shouldn't stick around as long as they have.  I'm not saying BTC-e is or isn't, I don't use them, but keeping them around "just because" makes no sense.
233  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Crowdfunding] Bitcoin to Sponsor Rescue Animals on: March 04, 2014, 08:33:15 PM
Bump.  Come on guys, I'm trying to promote Bitcoin is a positive light. No suggestions?  Would anyone even be willing to donate?
234  Bitcoin / Project Development / [Crowdfunding] Bitcoin to Sponsor Rescue Animals on: March 03, 2014, 07:43:42 PM
I volunteer regularly at my local Humane Society and noticed that on some of the kennels, they have a "sponsored by" sign.  Basically the sponsor covers all of the food and general care for the animal in that particular kennel for the year.

I'm throwing around the idea of starting a crowdfunding project to get as many "Sponsored by Bitcoin" kennels as I can.  I think it would be pretty cool to see a whole row of them, it certainly would catch the public eye as they're rather prominent (right on the front of the door which is chain link).  If I can get it up and running, I would take regular pictures of the dogs, give their backgrounds, etc., and of course pictures of the Bitcoin signs.  I've done some preliminary talks with the Humane Society and they are receptive to the idea.  I'm not sure of the exact cost of sponsorship but from talking with them it sounds like it will be roughly $1500 per annum per kennel, which I think is a pretty good deal for some prominent advertising.  Lets face it, a lot of us have made a lot of money from Bitcoin and I think it would be a cool way to give back, promote Bitcoin in a positive way, and at the same time support a local shelter.

The main obstacles I can see is 1) would people be willing to donate and 2) would people be willing to trust me.  I really have no idea about #1 but I think if I promote it enough, people will donate.  The main issue is #2, and that's trust.  I've been a member of the forums since 2011 but I recognize this doesn't hold a great deal of weight (although it's better than a newbie trying to start the project).  I need some ideas on what would be the best way to make this as transparent as possible.

Some ideas:
  • Upfront the money myself and get the first sponsorship in place.  From there I can start taking pictures, etc., and there's tangible proof.  The major risk being the project doesn't take off at all and I'm stuck with the bill.
  • Set up a "good faith" deposit with a trusted escrow on the forums (John K. or someone willing) so in the event I don't pull through with my promise, the escrow can release the funds to those who donated to help recoup their losses.
  • Have all of the money flow through an escrow and once it reaches the goal amount ($1500 or whatever it will be), have the escrow release the funds to me.  Escrow will have all of my contact information and fully vet me in whatever way he/she sees fit.

Can anyone think of any better options?  I could use some help.  I plan on taking no fees or anything like that, 100% of the donations would go to the promotion of Bitcoin and the Humane Society.

Thanks for taking the time to read.  Hit me up here or via PM.
235  Economy / Economics / Re: Why not get rid of online exchanges? Seems like it is time for a game changer! on: March 03, 2014, 06:19:51 PM
Probably the most discussed (serious) topic on here.

Notice how you are fudging the issue (as almost everyone seems to): peer to peer exchange of crypto/crypto vs peer to peer exchange of crypto/fiat.

The latter is the real problem (although I'm not saying the first one is particularly easy).

Why bother with fiat? It is a doomed experiment. The banksters had their day now it is time for them and their puppet politicians to get out of the way because of a new revolution.

People who keep comparing crypto to fiat in terms of worth just don't get it.

If you don't use fiat, what are you exchanging?  Bitcoins for...?

What? Are you serious?

For goods and services, and if you must have a physical store of wealth gold and silver.

Fiat is nothing more than modern day slavery. It is time for it to go the way of the dinosaur. They print it out of thin air with no finite level. With every dollar created $1.05 is owed to the banksters, thus ensuring debt slavery.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu_VqX6J93k

Stop being obtuse, it's pretty obvious you still need fiat at this point in Bitcoin's life cycle.  Bitcoin is generated through the mining process, which also keeps the network integrity in tact, all of which costs electricity.  Last I checked, the major electric companies are not accepting Bitcoin as payment so you're still going to have to use fiat.  A pure goods/services to Bitcoin economy would be very small in scale.  Insignificant.

Same with gold, how are you going to get that gold?  Pan for it?  Mow someone's lawn for gold?  You can use Bitcoin as a MEDIUM OF EXCHANGE, but what does that have to do with eliminating the exchanges?  Nothing.

237  Economy / Economics / Re: If Russia attacks Ukraine - Bitcoin? on: March 03, 2014, 06:11:38 PM
Putin knew the repercussions of his actions, obviously he thought they wouldn't be big enough to warrant a stoppage and he's probably right.  I feel for those in the Ukraine but in terms of a global impact or impact on Bitcoin, call me when they attack a NATO country.
238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: KNC giving out free Bitcoins on: March 03, 2014, 06:09:02 PM
remember guys, it is server controlled. so do not put life savings into it. just put daily pocket money amounts in.

.. you dont want to get goxxed

Well they released their source code at least.  I was thinking $5 isn't worth all the information on my phone.
239  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is the price climbing again? (3.3.2014 UTC around 16:00) on: March 03, 2014, 06:03:17 PM
I think the situation with Gox was depressing the market and now that we have a known outcome (bankruptcy) the market can move on.
240  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will hit $1000 by this Friday (07-03-2014) on: March 03, 2014, 06:02:12 PM
This belongs in speculation as OP has zero basis for his argument.
