221  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: November 15, 2014, 10:59:02 PM
Hi there,

I have a defect fan on my S4. Do you know where on the web I'd find a compatible one, same specs?

In the meantime, my S4 won't start mining because it detects a 0-RPM fan. I tried giving it a manual spin and the S4 started hashing. Do you know how I can tell the S4 to mine even if there's a missing fan, without giving it a spin?

I sent an e-mail to Bitmain but thought it would be faster to get one if I order on the web with priority post or something like that. I'm in Canada.

Thanks!

Thanks for everything Eleuthria, BTC Guild was my first pool and you are one of the most present and active pool operators around!  Great work, great contribution!

Good luck for your future projects!

Making progress on the heat removal front!

I call it The Hot Blast Redirectenator.  Got it at Home Depot.  (That is foil tape, absolutely required, amazing stuff!)

And this is its Chimney:

https://i.imgur.com/oHXUhVz.jpg

Both the S4 and his two little brother S3's exhaust heat out through a hole in my basement wall (was for a clothes dryer exhaust).  I also have an inline fan that pulls 240 cubic feet per minute, to help push the air flow through the reducers and out the smallish 4" hole, but am not using it yet.

As the weather gets colder of course, I will rearrange this a bit to let me pipe all that heat inside, possibly upstairs into the main living areas of the house, and then probably use the hole in the exterior wall (and perhaps the fan) to pull in cold air from outside, to lower the ambient temperature inside the closet.

I think the S4 might be able to heat this whole ~2,000 sqft house all by itself!  It's certainly made the entire downstairs half unbearably hot this past week with little to no help from Mother Nature at all...

What do you think?

-dave

Nice. Personally, I had to install some miners outside of the house, hidden from the neighbourhood of course. Can't wait for winter to arrive... Lol! Now you gave me some ideas to connect my miners to my central heat system.

Btw, don't leave your kill-a-watt plugged in all the time, mine got really hot and broke!

I turn my S4 off at night, and on again in the morning.

Is there a reason why the highest number for 'BestShare' is always found within the first 45 minutes,
and then the following 12 or so hours it doesn't seem to go any higher? (it has been doing this for four days so far)

So for example,

one day I turn the machine on in the morning, first 45 minutes,
bestshare is found at 7561782, stays at that number for the next 12 hours or so.

another day I turn the machine on in the morning, first 45 minutes,
bestshare is found at 14561782, stays at that number the next 12 hours or so.

Now I understand that it will stay at that number if it doesn't find anything better,
but why is it always peaking during the first 45 minutes and thereafter nothing higher?

I am using solo.ckpool.org and I am just wondering if this is normal.

I noticed the same thing here. Seems like the BestShare is not updating correctly. I tried running the S4 on a local pool and I could see submitted shares difficulties higher than the displayed BestShare in the miner status page.

226  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 2TH/s, Batch 1 on Sale this week, shipping before Sept. Ends on: September 25, 2014, 01:20:06 PM

To all customers that ordered AntMiner S2s: We analysed the business case for S2 upgrade kits for end users and determined that it would not be worthwhile for either party.
............
Coupons will be issued to express our sincere thank you for supporting Bitmain over the year. Each coupon has a value of $200 and will be issued for each S2 unit purchased. These coupons are only applicable for the purchase of S4s and only one coupon can be used per S4.
...........

Where are my Coupons?

Not showing in my account either... I guess they will show up when s4 is available to order.

Hey there PatMan, out of curiosity, what hashrate does your OC'ed S2 get?  I didn't overclock my S2's because I don't trust the builtin PSU and was wondering if it's worth changing it.

Thanks!

I'm getting ~950GH/s average. The hash rate is always slightly lower on p2pool, but it's worth it, luck has been crazy good lately. If I use it on a centralized pool I get ~1100GH/s using a slightly higher --queue size, but I found using 0 works best on my local node.

Peace  Smiley

EDIT: And yes, don't OC it with the standard PSU - it can't take it & you'll be waving bye-bye to it in no time  Wink

I just bought an EVGA 1300 (using it for 2 S1's for now) and thought trying it on one of my S2's + overclocking. I currently get around 990 GH/s on average on Eligius but I'm not sure if getting 1100 GH/s is worth the trouble. Still, always curious about tuning everything to get the max out of all. Smiley

Thanks for the info and peace!

Is there a consensus on the best replacement PSU for the S2?   BOTH of mine conked out last night after a power outage.

I was thinking something along the lines of a Corsair AX1200...

I'm running my S2 OC'd & 212 on a OCZ1250 Gold - sweet as a nut  Smiley

the attacker does not gain any direct benefit by performing the attack

Hi guys,

It is NOT true that the attacker cannot benefit from such an attack!

In our paper published 6 months ago we explain how to make block withholding attacks PROFITABLE.
It is very very simple and gains can be quite substantial in practice, see:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1402.1718

If I read correctly, in your paper, you don't explain how withholding blocks is profitable. You explain how it makes miners from the attacked pool (including the withholder) gain less (than if there was no withholding). So, by having half the hashpower mining elsewhere, the withholder gains are bigger than the other miners (from the attacked pool) -- but they are less than if there was no block withholding. I don't think this is PROFIT in the sense of gaining more. It's just "more than the others from the pool".

Where withholding blocks could be profitable is for pool operators. Making a competitor pool look less interesting with bad luck may make miners switch/choose another pool and the chosen pool operator would then benefit from the better pool fees/income. Thinking out loud. It is not mathematics, it is just manipulation of miner opinions and decisions by making a pool look bad.

How many miners do you have on WiFi? There is a limit to how many can be on the same frequency/channel, you may have reached it.

Other things to check..
Wifi security protocol is the same at both ends: WPA/PSK etc.
Wifi password is correctly entered.
The DHCP range of IP addresses is not all used up. Either widen the range or set the IP/Mask/Gateway manually.

If you think the wireless is broken on your miner, you can turn a LAN port into a wireless one using a TP-Link MR3020.
If you think your routers wifi is at full capacity you can turn one of it's LAN port into another wireless router using a TP-Link MR3020 also.

Hi,

It's only 4 miners and it was working just fine before.
I just switched pools, rebooted and then I couldn't get it to work after that.

Hi, something similar happened to me, I couldn't understand what was going on... until I remember I activated MAC filtering on my router and did not add that S1's MAC address in the Allowed list. Also, did you move the S1? Make sure the wifi signal is within range and strong enough, especially if you don't have an antenna on your S1. Sometimes just moving the router 6 inches will make a difference.

Hi guys,

I just switched mining pools on one of my ants and since then it does not connect to with wifi.

I get the following error in system log:

Fri Jun  6 22:59:35 2014 kern.info kernel: [  108.440000] wlan0: authentication with 00:03:6f:89:51:e4 timed out

What is wrong with it?

Thanks

Power off the S1.  Reboot your wireless router (unplug, wait, plug back in).  Once router booted, turn on S1.

Nope. Still doesn't work.

Interesting.  You could always try using the reset to go to factory default and re-configure.

I did, a couple of times.

If you switch back to the previous pool, does the wifi start to work?

Tempting... but still not a good deal. Sorry Bitmain.

Take a look at my spreadsheet, play with the editable cells and see for yourself.

Unless the S1's are recyclable in 2015?...

Looks good.  Kinda like the numbers I put together.  I lease some of my ants out which helps close the gap.  Sometimes you can mine alts and sell at

really good returns vs. Bitcoin. Smiley

Underclocking to reduce power usage helps too.

Thanks! You're right, there's more you can do to close the gap and selling GH/s on eBay is something to consider when selling 4 x the mining results. As for mining alts, you have to carefully choose which one. Smiley

I tried selling my S1's but that's not an easy task. S1's were easier to sell in Feb. than today. The problem is not the price, it's the usefulness of the machine itself... by the end of the year, it will produce 0.0008 BTC per day if diff. increases by 15% which is far from sure.

But hey, we're part of it! We were there! We'll have stories to tell our grand-children in a few decades! Smiley

Everyone got a fucking spreadsheet, uuughh. buy hardware, bitcoin price will rise, sell all your BTC and mining equipment, repeat.

If they all got their spreadsheet, why do they still buy a miner at that price? To transform the produced heat in some energy and paying A/C with it? Two reasons to buy hardware:

1. getting Bitcoins
2. contributing to the Bitcoin system

What is the real reason why you would buy a miner, really?  If it's 1., then buy BTC since it is a better deal.
