221  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] - Stumptown Miners - Avalon PCB Assembly - West Coast USA on: June 25, 2013, 07:34:00 PM
Thanks ryepdx. I'd like to get a K16 but only have 12 chips. Any suggestions? Should I try and find more chips?

Earlier I saw one of my customers had 4 extra chips they were looking to offload. I'll see if I can find them again and edit this post with their info if I do.
222  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy#1] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as escrow! FINISHED! on: June 23, 2013, 11:59:33 PM
U.S. Batch 1 members: who do you think is going to be the quickest K16's integrator at this point?  I know Ragin is talking about coming out with some information, but out of the current providers who would be best to partner with?  Our chips will be on East Coast where most integrators seem to be West Coast.

I'm going with Stumptown Miners, but then again I'm a bit biased. :-3

I am worried with the availabilities of microchip PIC16LF1459-I/SS. Microchip information  PIC16LF1459-I/SS   Estimated Availability:  05-Aug-2013

I think we would have to consider the possibility of alternatives or change package.

You can also use the PIC16LF1459-E/SS. The only difference appears to be wider operating temperature range. (-55C to +125C v.s. -55C to +85C)

BkkCoins has also promised a QFN version of the board which will use PIC16LF1459-I/ML.

But you're right, the PIC is going to be the big bottleneck in this operation. With the number of chips ordered from Avalon, if only half get used in K16s, we're looking at a need for 14k+ PICs.

Edit:
With 256 PICs coming my way (90 in hand and 166 shipping July 11th), I may end up with a surplus. If anyone is short PICs in the future, let me know and I might be able to sell you some.

Not a dumb question. Quite simply, I've never done it, I'm not sure how it works, and didn't want to deal with it.

It's pretty simple. You just PM JohnK and ask him to escrow. He's pretty much the go-to escrow guy 'round these parts. Though the Bitcoin protocol allows for low-trust escrow via multi-signature transactions, John usually just creates a bitcoin address and holds the funds for people.

Update!

After looking at the availability of alternative parts on the BOM, I'm much less worried about shortages now. The PICs are the scarcest component at present. I have 90 of those in hand and I've sent off for 166 more. They will get shipped to me on July 11th. We should be covered for at least 256 K16s now, PIC-wise. If orders start taking off and we need more, we can switch to the alternative design BkkCoins will be releasing and use the QFN version.

At present we are halfway to having a full batch of K16s, if we substitute them for the K64s. I've sent off an email to Colin to see if he can offer pricing that's competitive with Tate's at that batch size. If so, I will lower the minimum batch size on the K16s.
226  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: June 23, 2013, 03:47:07 AM
If it's a standard 0402 cap, if one specific manufacturer part on one vendor runs low or out, there are 5-10x other vendors with the same part, and probably another 10x manufactuer parts (each listed on the vendor sites) that will work

Derp. Thanks. I feel a bit silly now. :-p
227  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: June 23, 2013, 02:03:26 AM
Which is kind of dumb since why bother using 0402 parts if using as much space as 0603.

Are you talking about the C1005X7S1A474K? (The one with 192 pieces on the BOM.) Because that would be pretty awesome, considering stock of the 0402 version is starting to run low at most places. Could we use a 0603 version instead, then?
228  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My DIY Avalon-based mining board (Davalon) on: June 22, 2013, 09:59:26 PM
I'm interested in this. Right now there are only two real options when it comes to Avalon PCB designs. If we can get some of the demand for miners spread across more designs, we will all probably have fewer problems with deployment when the chips finally ship en masse.
229  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: June 21, 2013, 05:47:05 PM
Kinda interested in the k-1

I don't see anyone willing to make them though

I'm making them, assuming I get enough sales to fill a batch of 128.

Where can I actually buy a board+parts?

Right now? Nowhere. The thing's barely begun testing. You can preorder them from a few places, though, if you have chips and want assembly (such as my own assembly service). BkkCoins will be selling bare boards, kits, and populated boards (minus chips) directly, too, once the design is done. (See the first post in this thread.)

sweet idea..

Thanks!

The flow/site is a bit broken.
I just tried to post a bounty for this issue.

Sorry about that. I've been neglecting the website after being picked up by a startup solving more or less the same problem. The bug appears to have been caused by a stopped bitcoind instance. I just learned about monit and set it up to check the bitcoind process once every minute, so that shouldn't happen again.

1. The URL I got to was
Quote

I'm pretty sure that was not supposed to be undefined.

True facts. Caused by the lack of a bitcoind process. It's working now.

2. The only way to pay was to scan a QR code. Where is the actual Bitcoin address for those who don't want to pay with a mobile device?

There's a Bitcoin address on every issue page, right below/beside (depending on how wide your screen is) the "Donation Address" heading.

3. Is there a permalink to the issue on bitcoinbounties? I want to see how it looks before deposting my hard earned bitcoins there.

Yes, there is. I went ahead and re-submitted your issue URL for you once I got bitcoind up again. The permalink for your issue is http://bitcoinbounties.com/issues/18azyNr8mCDte9rVtfcCVPwrhUTTqD2sxY. Clicking the "Keep track of your issue's progess" button after submitting an issue takes you to that issue's donation page.

A risk terrahash took... i wonder how it works out.

Found first error: Vcc power for PIC is not connected.

Not too well, it seems...

I'd like to buy one K16, what is the group buy username / batch number / number of chips?
          Thanks--

The username of the group buy organizer you bought chips from, which number group buy it was (if this was their first/only group buy, then it'd be batch 1), and the number of chips you will be forwarding to me from them.

I would not pull the trigger until we see a working proto type. The design has not been debugged yet and you would be taking a large risk if for example the PCB needed some changes.

True enough. But there are certain parts on the BOM that have a high probability of *still* being on the BOM after the prototype has been tested. These parts are starting to see shortages at all the online shops, and that's making me a little nervous.
237  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: List of Avalon-ASIC-Miner-Developers and Assembler on: June 18, 2013, 12:32:22 AM
Hey all,

My website, www.stumptownminers.com, is open for orders now. I'm focusing on fast turnaround and doing as much of the work locally as possible, so my prices *are* a little higher than most people's. Right now we're only about halfway to a full K16 batch and we're getting to the point where I need to either pull the trigger or start issuing refunds.

If you're interested in getting your miner assembled in the Pacific Northwest, particularly if you want to pick it up in person here in Portland once it's done, I recommend you head over to the website and place an order ASAP.

Thanks!

Ryan

If anyone was having trouble ordering earlier, the server errors have been resolved and everything is functioning normally now.
239  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] - Stumptown Miners - Avalon PCB Assembly - West Coast USA on: June 15, 2013, 03:12:21 PM
I've got BitPay set up now, so the currency conversion will take place instantly. Because the currency conversion is taking place instantly, I've changed the listed prices to USD. However, you still must pay in bitcoin.

Let me know if any of you have any questions. Thanks!
240  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] - Stumptown Miners - Avalon PCB Assembly - West Coast USA on: June 15, 2013, 05:28:48 AM
Not sure it'd be practical! Most of the components are small enough that reflow is basically the only way to go, as I understand it. There have been people who've been talking about doing skillet reflows, but I personally wouldn't want to risk my Avalon chips like that.
