221  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to test my (litecoin) node? on: April 04, 2024, 09:58:08 AM
is there something like https://bitnodes.io/ that has a method to test if my node is available to the public?

how would i perform this test through a shell command? that would be a better option.

I have a litecoin node i'd like to test to make sure is accessible publicly. i also want to test my dogecoin and monero node
https://bitnodes.io does not show all bitcoin full nodes, but rather nodes that accept incoming connections from port between 1024 and 65535, and Litecoin has a similar analysis

https://ltc.bitaps.com
or
https://blockchair.com/en/litecoin/nodes

As for unknown altcoin or general answer you can check Port Forwarding using canyouseeme.org just open port 18080 or 18081

222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I retrieve the private key for my bitcoincore wallet address? on: April 04, 2024, 09:34:00 AM
is the only backup I have just the data in wallet.dat? is this safe?
I do not advise you to extract the private key, a.k.a master private key, as wallet.dat allows you to encrypt your private key with a password, and the stronger and unique it is, the more difficult to hack your wallet.

bitcoincore wallet is not a good option for beginners so why not use any SPV wallet like https://electrum.org or https://sparrowwallet.com where you get your 12 words wallet seed which can be easily stored offline.
223  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Kucoin in trouble? on: April 03, 2024, 01:11:44 PM
A lot easier to sell when my crypto is already on the exchange but of course that comes with risk.
THERE'S NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE, and when eyes started on FTX, it collapsed quickly, so there is no need to risk your coins and trust that everything will be fine.
Kucoin will not be safe if you use it in the United States and will likely be banned in more countries.
224  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining Kaspa With What? on: April 03, 2024, 12:36:50 PM
Is 33 dB to 40 dB the result of the experiment or what they promise you? Reducing the noise from 75 to 33 would be great, but the best I got was ~(50-55) dB.
You are right that a regular noise box reduces the noise level on average from 80-90 dB to 50-55 dB, but if you add additional noise insulation to ventilation ducts and other elements, as well as replace the cooling system, you can further reduce the noise level by 10-15 dB . But this will be very expensive and depends on the ASIC model and the location for mining.
A soundproof room will be sufficient as a noise level of 50-55 dB can be tolerated.
These solutions remain useful for those who own one or two mining devices, but for mining farms or whenever the number of miners exceeds two, it will be completely different.
225  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Securing Electrum seed phrases though Seed Extension on: April 03, 2024, 12:25:27 PM
A passphrase does not replace the seed phrase, it is only an extra layer of security and it is very recommended, because an attacker would need seed phrase + passphrase to be able to steal the funds. However, only people who know exactly what they are doing should set it up.

I think you got him wrong
Seed Extension doesn't replace  Electrum's SEED, it just extends the given SEED to add the security at the case when that SEED is caught  by someone else’s hands.

My answer was to this part, he assumed that if the wallet seed was hacked, the passphrase would make his wallet safe, so he was not careful about its security and kept it in a gmail account, and we all know how easy it is to hack these accounts.
So I explained to him in terms of entropy how relying on passphrase is not safe.

Quote
Secondly, if someone hacks his seed phrases both physically or online, that is of no use because he has seed extensions to the seed phrases which only he knows about.

226  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is that Possible to mine crypto with ram on: April 03, 2024, 12:19:56 PM
You cannot mine cryptocurrencies using RAM (Random-access memory) because you need some computing power, so cryptocurrencies are mined using the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), or ASICs.
the good ones crypto cannot be mined using only your home computer, but you need to make some improvements to the hardware, then you can mine Monero, Zcash, Grin and a few crypto and to mine Bitcoin you need ASICs.
227  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Seed phrase backup against natural disaster areas on: April 03, 2024, 11:09:29 AM
I created a similar topic a year ago when Türkiye earthquake happened. Is Metal Seed Storage Safe in an Earthquake?
Metal Seed Storage with a passphrase stored in a separate place is good for fires, floods, and natural disasters, but if the disaster is like an earthquake or something that could make it impossible to recover, I think it is better to use a multi-signature wallet where you can distribute the signatures to several countries. The distribution of keys for these wallets varies according to your capabilities.
228  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Securing Electrum seed phrases though Seed Extension on: April 03, 2024, 10:58:01 AM
By storing the seed in Google, we cannot assume that this wallet is cold storage.

Your friend reduced the entropy from 128 bit key strength, which is considered safe, to about 10 non-random characters, which a person can remember.

Let us take the entropy of such a passphrase
we've got

26 small chars + 25 big chars +10 digits+3 special chars= 64 possibilities.

(64^10)/2 = 5.76460752* 1017 (entropy would be greatly reduced if social attack was used and the word was easy to guess.)
While electrum entropy
(2^128)/2 = 1.70141183 * 1038

In short, Seed Extension word that can be remembered will not be secure enough if the hacker gains access to the wallet seed.

// I modified the wording to avoid misunderstanding the phrase.
229  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Atomic Stealer - Mac OS malware that targets crypto wallets on: April 02, 2024, 12:09:15 PM

  • collection of usernames and passwords from browser login data
  • the ability to pull credit card details
  • stealing data from a list of installed crypto wallets, among which are Ledger and Trezor
This is another reason not to use the browser to remember sensitive data, it is better to encrypt passwords in a file or use an open source password manager.

There is no information about this on how atomic stealer can steal those data from these HW. But i'm guessing it's only possible in the installed software like ledger live and trezor suit since there's no way those hardware can be infected with malware.

I think the report means Ledger and Trezor Extension, and since a fake version of the web browser was downloaded, all the extensions in it will inevitably be unsafe.
230  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Transfer from bitcoin-qt to Trezor via Electrum on: April 02, 2024, 11:52:00 AM
I would prefer to choose Ubuntu or any open source OS, but if you do the first step successfully, then 2,3,4 steps are correct.in Electrum import the private key with this command: p2pkh:<<private key1>>

232  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: prefork coins on: April 01, 2024, 11:12:20 AM

You can import your seedphrase there after safely downloading the wallet and access your BCH coins.
Do not do this, it is better to move your coins to a new address and then import the private key (not wallet seed) of the address that contains forked bitcoin.
Electron Cash is developed by an unknown developer and the code has not been reviewed sufficiently, so it is best to avoid installing it on a device that contains your Electrum wallet files.
233  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Options for portable homemade DIY hardware wallet (no commercial wallets)? on: April 01, 2024, 10:16:37 AM
You can also create a DIY Trezor Crypto Hardware Wallet and modify the outer case to be different from the shape of Hardware wallets, but in the end, I think that an airport security employee may ask you what this device is, so always add a secure element when make your own HW.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZmv4wG6_PE (Trezor code updates faster than most DIY solutions)

Advantages of DIY HW:
Possibility of adding a safe element.
Support for alternative currencies.

Other than that, I think burning an open source OS on USB and running airgapped on it would be easier, especially since you can get a PC at a cheap price and learn to remove network parts from it.
234  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining Kaspa With What? on: March 31, 2024, 03:22:51 PM
The noise of a regular ASIC is 70 dB to 75 dB in the room. I have seen measurements of the noise level of a noise box, when it was possible to obtain figures of 33 dB to 40 dB, which allows the use of ASIC on the balcony. If you use radial fans, the noise can be further reduced, but these fans are expensive.

Is 33 dB to 40 dB the result of the experiment or what they promise you? Reducing the noise from 75 to 33 would be great, but the best I got was ~(50-55) dB.
235  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Does tor proxy on Sparrow keep IP address invisible to public servers? on: March 31, 2024, 03:17:47 PM
I'm running Sparrow connected to a public server, with tor proxy enabled. I believe this means servers and mixers can't see my real IP address, but just wanted to confirm here. One other question, are there any issues with running a VPN simultaneously with tor proxy, if I'm only using the proxy for Sparrow?
Connecting to public servers is usually bad for privacy. It is true that Tor proxy enabled means that your real IP address is not shown, but they can still see your addresses. Connecting to more of these servers means that more servers may collect more data about your addresses, which It can be used to reveal your real IP address if you look it up using some block explorers.

So be careful or make all your connections through Tor.
236  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Weird bug in bitcoin core qt for some people, is there a command to remedy? on: March 31, 2024, 02:59:05 PM
When you restore from and older wallet.dat file sometimes all the new received addresses you have generated on your more updated wallet.dat are for some reason now labelled as change addresses so are kind of invisible to a novice user.
By design, the wallet believes that payment addresses are actual change, but they are not fixed so that each transaction does not appear multiple times.

You can solve this problem by deleting this line https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/d0f81a96d9c158a9226dc946bdd61d48c4d42959/src/wallet/wallet.cpp#L1756

Code:
if (pwallet->IsChange(txout))

and recompile

You can see discussions on this topic here https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/16160
237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Restoring wallet.dat to Bitcoin core client on Macbook on: March 30, 2024, 01:11:59 PM
I quickly checked online and few options are:

1. Use websites that allow you to enter addresses in bulk and then they will check the balance. I'm assuming they do it all client-side in the browser and use an API key to query one of the blockchain explorers.
You can do this in two ways:

1)
  • Offline machine: Writing a simple script that searches for the public key (Bitcoin addresses) and extracts it to a file.
  • Online version: check the addresses that contain a balance and then return again to offline machine to extract the private keys for addresses with balance only.

2) dump wallet using pywallet.py https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet using the command

Code:
python pywallet.py --dumpwallet  // (dump wallet in json format)

dealing with json format is easier than txt file.
238  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining Kaspa With What? on: March 30, 2024, 11:43:35 AM
This is a continuation of the story. A good noise box does a great job of reducing noise levels.
https://t.me/Info4atlanin/9741
This noise box is good at reducing noise levels, but it will not make the device silent so that it works in quiet areas such as residential apartments, but rather for open areas.

They claim that it reduces the sound to about 30 dB, which is closer to the sound of a library, but from my experience, I believe that the sound is around 60 dB to 65 dB, which is closer to the sound of a vacuum cleaner when it makes a noise or the sound of the TV turning on loudly. If you are in a crowded residential environment,Your neighbors will definitely not be happy with these sounds all day.
But if you have a separate and isolated room, you may be able to lower it to less than 55 dB, which is similar to Low Volume of a TV.
239  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My DIY Seed Storage on a soda can Inspired by Pmalek's Guide on: March 29, 2024, 11:56:37 AM
Great job. I didn't think it was that simple, especially since the edges of soda can appear to be very serrated and it may have caused some injuries.
The encoding process is difficult, but decoding seems much easier.

Below are a pictures of the process. I blurred some parts out for privacy.
You did not do it correctly and it is better not to use that wallet seed because about 10 words appear clearly.
The last 8 words appear clearly, there are two words at the top that are easy to guess, and the last two words can be easily guessed by brute force, especially since their order is specified.
240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Report: ExxonMobil Running Pilot Project to Supply Flared Gas for Bitcoin Mining on: March 29, 2024, 11:36:39 AM
The process of mining Bitcoin by burning Flared Gas is not simply that there is an energy source and you insert the plug of the mining device into that source, as the gas is not burned if there is the possibility of storing it and selling it to the markets.

Burning the gas can either be a temporary process, as happens in flowback, where it is burned as a temporary measure to remove hydrostatic pressure, which is a stage before the well starts producing gas or as a temporary measure when problems occur.

Bitcoin mining resulting from this process is not a continuous thing, and therefore there will not be separate units in mining companies to exploit it, but rather a temporary thing.

If someone has more experience or knowledge, please add more links. Moving the topic to the mining board will give you better replies.
