2201  Other / Politics & Society / Everything we know about the death of Osama Bin Laden is wrong on: May 11, 2015, 05:24:28 PM
Everything you know about Osama bin Laden’s killing is wrong.
That’s the short version of a very long Seymour Hersh story, just published in the London Review of Books, which offers an alternative narrative of the killing of Bin Laden in 2011.

The slightly longer version is that two key Pakistani officials, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the army staff, and General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, director general of the Pakistan’s intelligence service, were in on the operation to kill Bin Laden and ensured U.S. helicopters could travel safely across the border from Afghanistan into airspace over key Pakistani security facilities. They did so, Hersh’s story goes, in exchange for both personal bribes and a resumption of US military funding to Pakistan.

a former senior Pakistani intelligence officer actually approached the CIA station chief in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, to offer up Bin Laden in exchange for part of the $25 million reward the U.S. offered. That source told the CIA that Bin Laden had been held captive by Pakistan’s intelligence service since 2006 as a kind of insurance policy against the Taliban. After that source went to the CIA, they did a series of checks, including obtaining DNA from a Pakistani doctor who was caring for the aging Bin Laden. It checked out. The U.S. decided to pursue Bin Laden, which is when they started bribing the Pakistanis to make it possible.

The plan called for a stealth raid of the Abottabad compound, conducted with the assistance of Pakistan’s intelligence service, the ISI, which would assure that the Pakistani military did not interfere with the two Black Hawk helicopters after they crossed the border from Afghanistan. The raid would be conducted in secret, and remain a secret; the official story would be that Bin Laden was killed in a drone strike in tribal lands. However, on the night of the raid, things started to go haywire when the Navy SEALs crashed their helicopter, making it impossible to later tell the pre-arranged cover story. Rather than keeping the operation secret for some time until telling that cover story, the Obama administration immediately began spinning the raid to its political benefit. Subsequently, according to Hersh, the government had to come up with one story after another to cover holes in the previous ones. The foregrounding of torture in the pursuit in Bin Laden, according to this version of events, came when CIA old-timers were brought in to help craft yet more cover stories — and they decided to give it a spin that would help CIA avoid accountability for its torture program.

In short, as Hersh tells it, we’ve been told cover story after cover story after cover story.

I agree. Those five high volume bottoms at $210 just seemed fake to me, as if buyers were actually buying but only to sell $5 later. For this reason I'm unloading my cold storage and putting it max leverage short on OKCoin.

Should be a sure thing.

I would ask tarmi, but he seems to have left the building.
If he got margin'd up, he's either ruined for good or in such a strong state of shock that he had to undergo treatment and this might speak to his absence.

Indeed. It takes a lot of sand or intestinal fortitude to weather such a long down trend and I think we're all stronger because of it, not that I preferred it to happen that way. Most ordinary people have never had to deal with such a factor especially in such a new market.

the trolls, FUDSTERS & doom mongers were declaring sub 200 coins for ages, it doesn't look like it's going to happen now, certainly not imminently.

Walsoraj was predicting double digit coins when we were at USD1100.

All hail Wally, the oracle.
I don't even remember this prediction as I've had him on ignore for over a year it seems, before I even decided to oust lambtroll from my view. If I can't take someone seriously, off they go.

Amazing stuff.  Wall street would save tons of money in lawyer in bank fees.  And I didn't realize it took 3 days to finalize trades.
Well, you fooled yourself in such an epic way that I'd say that "naked and afraid" is too much for ya.

Watch: George Clooney pledges to support Hillary Clinton any way he can

It looks like Hillary Clinton’s got the #TeamClooney vote on lock. In a new interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos, George Clooney says that he’ll assist Clinton, whom he describes as a “tremendous candidate,” in “whatever way [he] can help.”

Clooney’s full support could be huge for the Clinton campaign, given its primary fundraising goal of $100 million. Back in 2012, the Academy Award-winning actor held a fundraising event for Barack Obama at his Studio City, California, home that ultimately raised $10 million for the incumbent—the largest amount of money raised at a single Obama campaign event up to that point.

Clooney, who dominated headlines last September thanks to his high-profile wedding to human-rights lawyer Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin), has long used his star power to shine a light on political issues. He was one of Hollywood’s foremost advocates in spreading awareness of the crisis in Darfur, and he served as one of the United Nations’ Messengers of Peace from 2008 until 2014.

Clinton campaign’s dilemma: What to do with Bill?

MARRAKESH, Morocco — The scene that unfolded here last week as Bill Clinton convened world leaders for a philanthropic conference was hardly what his wife’s champion-for-everyday-Americans campaign would have ordered up.

Gathered in Marrakesh for a Clinton Global Initiative confab, foreign oligarchs and corporate titans mingled amid palm trees, decorative pools and dazzling tiled courtyards with the former president and his traveling delegation of foundation donors — many of whom are also donors to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign.

When daughter Chelsea moderated a discussion on women’s empowerment, the only male panelist was Morocco’s richest person, Othman Benjelloun, whose BMCE Bank is a CGI sponsor. For the week’s biggest party, guests were chauffeured across the city to an opulent 56-room palace that boasts a private collection of Arabian horses, overlooks the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and serves a fine-dining menu of “biolight” cuisine.

Ahead of that event, Bill Clinton greeted Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal. “See you tonight, Turki,” he told his royal highness.

It was a long way from Hillary Clinton’s campaign-trail visits to Chipotle. The luxe week in Morocco highlighted the overarching question facing the Clintons and their coexisting circles of political advisers: What to do with Bill?

The former “Republic of Texas” has also had one of the strongest streaks of independence in the US since it was annexed in 1845, making the “Lone Star” state ripe for conspiracy tales involving the federal government.

But the latest intrigue took on a new dimension when Greg Abbott, the new Republican governor of Texas, ordered the State Guard, a branch of the Texas state military, to monitor Jade Helm on the grounds that it was “important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed”.

Ted Cruz, the Texas senator running for president, said while he was not concerned about Jade Helm, the anxiety was valid because “we have seen, for six years, a federal government disrespecting the liberty of the citizens”.

But Mr Abbott’s move sparked criticism from mainstream Republicans and people surprised that he would lend credence to rumours.

The media has really been throwing Rand Paul under the bus. I was watching fox the other day and on The Factor, there was a list of the 4 top candidates against hillary. There was marco rubio, jeb bush, and ted cruz I believe, they were listed from best to worst on the top of the chart, but at the bottom, rand paul had the BEST chance against hillary but they put him on the bottom. They are being very subtle and trying to not let him win. Same with his father, they never gave him any time at the debates.

Considering that snake O'Reiley, he's the den of vipers on Fox that is there to dismiss Rand or to belittle him to the max. I hope he rots in hell for it. But the rest of the shows are decent towards Rand which is good thus far. The pretending of ignorance of Rand is something that shall not go on considering the other hosts know him and are more courteous towards him. BOR is the keynote POS on the station but I'd say that many are seeing him for the shithead he is.

Rand Paul Plays Down Comments on Military Exercise After Mockery

SAN FRANCISCO — Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has been mocked by liberal pundits who accused him of fanning conspiracy theories about a military exercise along the Texas border, an event that some on the far right believe is a covert effort to impose martial law.

But in an interview this weekend, Mr. Paul said he had no idea what the training exercise — known as Jade Helm — was when he was first asked about it last month on an Iowa radio program.

“Someone on a radio program asked me what it was. I didn’t know,” Mr. Paul said after he christened a new work space for his presidential campaign in the Bay Area. He expressed befuddlement at how his comments about “that ridiculous Jade something” had been blown out of proportion.

“I said sure, I’ll ask my staff to look into it because I didn’t know what it was,” he said.

The comments that drew ridicule by people like Bill Maher, who accused Mr. Paul of pandering to the right-wing fringe, occurred on the Jan Mickelson program. Mr. Mickelson brought up the exercise, telling the senator, “I’d like to know what the rest of the story is on that.”

Mr. Paul replied, “We’ll look at that also.”

I think people are taking it a bit out of proportion, but still there should be an eye on the military as with all the time. I doubt there will be martial law, Texas is not a state to mess with, and especially because of the gun laws there, most of citizens are armed (I believe over 50% of the households)
Most states aren't to mess with as the armament levels among the productive are high. That said, posse comitatus should be loud and clear but the feds still do what they want and push the envelope. It's hard to see that they aren't trying to do something new.

I'm a fan of Rand Paul. I'd like it if he were more libertarian, but he's probably about as libertarian as someone can be and still be considered a serious candidate.

I doubt he'll get the nomination, but if he does I'll vote for him. I'll consider it miracle if he were to also win in the general election.
He is running under Republican and under the federal general elections I believe there can only be either republican or democrat, no room for independants like libertarian like is offered in most states. So he has to change his policies just a bit to win under a Republican name instead of under his Independant Libertarian stance.
He pretty much has to drop the professorial route that his dad took as he was from a different era, so he had the old school approach and couldn't adapt to how the media demagoguery works. Rand saw what his dad went through across the board and tweaked his approach to nip a lot of that in the bud and repackage the liberty message for broader appeal in a republican primary.

Fears over military training fester in Texas city

BASTROP, Texas - Vicki Lehmeir said she was initially surprised that Gov. Greg Abbott put the Texas State Guard in charge of monitoring the U.S. military's Jade Helm 15 exercises this summer.

Then again, Lehmeir, treasurer of the county Democratic Party, reconsidered.

“Gov. Abbott is pandering to the paranoia in the state,” said Lehmeir, on Thursday morning. “And then he’ll probably complain about the cost, like he did at the border when those children were coming across.”

Fear that the exercises represent the beginnings of a military-led takeover of the state, orchestrated by President Barack Obama, were all too real for Bastrop resident Barbara Lynch.

Lynch said she doesn’t believe the Hawaiian-born president was actually born in the United States.

“You never know what’s going on behind the scenes. I’m just afraid we’re heading for a one-world government with Islamic being the one-world religion,” she said, alluding to a belief among some that the Christian president is, in fact, a Muslim.

“He’s the worst president I’ve ever heard of," she said.

Such strong sentiments are astir in this community, some 30 miles southeast of Austin, with news of the military's plans for a multi-state training exercise this summer.

Gov Greg Abbott Says He's Working to Calm Some Texans Upset Over Jade Helm 15 Exercise

AUSTIN -- Governor Greg Abbott, R-TX, says he's trying to bring calm to some Texans about a military exercise that will take place in Texas and six other states.

The eight-week exercise, known as Jade Helm 15, will begin July 15 and involves U.S. Specials Operations Forces such as Navy Seals and Green Berets. They will use public and private lands to train for overseas missions.

The prospect of armed federal troops in Texas has ignited a host of concerns and speculation about the military's motives -- ranging from the military's intention to impose martial law to a government conspiracy to launch a hostile takeover of Texas to taking away people's gun rights.

Abbott said he wants Texans to understand the military is there to protect and that the training exercises are ways that will help get them better prepared.

He said he's been in contact with the military and feels assured the exercise will be a normal military operation.

"It's so important to understand that there probably is no state in America that is more deeply connected to the military or honors the military more. And my office has been in communication with military at multiple levels, and we have the greatest assurances that these are normal military operations and they're going to work out just fine," Abbott said.

On one hand, many liberals are sociopaths as they always revert to pushing bigger government on the population to take from those who produce and give to the parasite class and allow them to have the bare minimum which keeps them in housing projects and away from the rest. On the other side of the isle, many religious fanatics tend to always seek government to foist their values onto others. Similarly, neocons can either think that foreign interventionism truly is helpful in keeping the country safe or they just like to use taxpayer money to use the big toys to workover different regions to their liking and monetary interests. I'm not saying absolutes when mentioning any of these but I do question the sincerity of those that call the shots on these aforementioned issues.

Yeah, it seems as though these guys (particularly Jeb) feel that the way W handled the Iraq war is actually popular again considering what Hillary, Obama and their overthrowing of dictators did and the subsequent handing over of tons of US military equipment to these rebels has caused.

So, in essence, go to war frivolously and wipe out the dictator in charge that held the extremists at bay. Then, when the fox guarding the hen house is gone we give all the little miscreants weapons they never would've had so they can terrorize the landscape and get the PR going again for more military intervention.
2220  Other / Politics & Society / Princeton Study: Congress literally doesn't care what you think on: May 10, 2015, 11:57:42 PM
Professors Martin Gilens (Princeton University) and Benjamin I. Page (Northwestern University) looked at more than 20 years worth of data to answer a simple question: Does the government represent the people?

Their study took data from nearly 2000 public opinion surveys and compared it to the policies that ended up becoming law. In other words, they compared what the public wanted to what the government actually did. What they found was extremely unsettling: The opinions of 90% of Americans has essentially no impact at all.

This video gives a quick rundown of their findings — it all boils down to one simple graph:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tu32CCA_Ig

Princeton University study: Public opinion has “near-zero” impact on U.S. law.

Gilens & Page found that the number of Americans for or against any idea has no impact on the likelihood that Congress will make it law.

“The preferences of the average American appear to have only a miniscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.”

One thing that does have an influence? Money. While the opinions of the bottom 90% of income earners in America have a “statistically non-significant impact,” Economic elites, business interests, and people who can afford lobbyists still carry major influence.
