2301  Other / Meta / Re: Some URL tag changes that has to be made on: September 07, 2020, 04:23:59 AM
If you post a link to a bitcointalk.org post or page, when you hover over the link, the text will be green, and links to any other domain will be blue.

A possible solution to the attack you describe may be to highlight links in red when a user hovers their mouse over the link in cases in which a domain is posted in the URL text that does not match the actual hyperlink.
2302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: wallet.dat in 2016 on: September 02, 2020, 09:41:35 PM
I only remember the first password I used
after that I changed my password for the second time, Unfortunately I forgot my password
If you have a backup of the wallet file when you were using this password, you can use the backup to access your coin using the old password (assuming it was encrypted using the same passphrase)
2303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: rescan wallet.dat old on: September 02, 2020, 09:38:42 PM
What are you wanting it to do?

My guess is the OP wants a script that will take the path to an existing wallet.dat file, and a path to a new wallet.dat file that will be created as inputs, and will copy the wallet.dat file.

He previously posted about forgetting his password to his wallet file, and my guess is he is trying to get around having to input the passphrase. Unfortunately this is not how encryption works.
2304  Economy / Services / Re: FUZZYMIX [telegram bot mixer] on: September 02, 2020, 09:28:48 PM
Do you seriously think people are going to trust you with their coin when you do not even have a website?

Forum members tend to be more paranoid about trusting others with their coin than the population as a whole. The number of scams the forum has seen means this paranoia is not unwarranted.
2305  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Can I call this the "right way of mixing"? on: September 02, 2020, 09:23:30 PM
I believe what you are describing in the OP is somewhat similar to what ChipMixer does. They allow their customers to gamble with the coin they are mixing for the purpose of obfuscating the link between what they sent to CM and what they are receiving from CM.

I would assume that most traditional casinos will keep extensive logs of their customers' transactions, and may give a list of deposit and withdrawal transactions if asked by law enforcement.

If a casino is not explicitly saying they do not keep logs, you should assume they do. If they are saying they don't keep logs, you will need to determine if you can trust them or not.
2306  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: AMLBot — checking criminal connections of crypto (Chainalysis for everyone) on: September 02, 2020, 09:06:59 PM
I want to point out that https://amlbot.com/#price says, under the $300 package:
Quote
For exchanges and exchanges. The most profitable package
I would not describe this as the "most profitable package" but rather the "best value" as your customers are not profiting from buying your service, they are paying you to help themselves avoid receiving coin they don't want to be receiving.

I would also point out that I would think most users would probably want feedback on addresses in mass rather than one at a time. As such, I would recommend setting up an API that will return the same information in commna delimited format so your customer can set up automation to stop transactions that meet certain criteria in your report.

You are also offering a "private investigation" that can allow someone to "know who owns the wallet", however this is misleading at best because it is not possible to be able to promise this information. No amount of invetigatory work will allow you to figure out who owns most crypto addresses.
2307  Economy / Reputation / Re: Flag suchmoon ,he is a communist supporting communist ideology on: September 02, 2020, 08:42:06 PM
I was under the impression that SM was going to vote for Trump despite his TDS because of just how radical the mainstream Democrat party has become.

SM is a leftist, but not a crazy hard leftist communinist. I have seen SM talk shit, but never try to dissiminiate left wing propaganda. I have seen SM take stances that would probably get her 'cancelled' by the mob if she was a public figure
2308  Other / Meta / Re: How do you encrypt bitcointalk messages? on: September 02, 2020, 08:33:48 PM

It would be really cool if some sort of client-side encryption can be added by default to PMs though. Maybe in Epochtalk?

Interesting idea, maybe we can add PGP database as well where user can upload their public PGP key.
This is something that already exists.

You should also be careful with using PGP. To my knowledge, the encryption cannot be broken with existing technology, but many people use it in an unsecure way. For example if you exchange keys with someone via PM, you really do not know who you are communicating with. The message containing the keys could be the subject of a MITM attack similar to what LoyceV describes is happening with privnotes [dot]com (scam site). You could send key ABC123 to someone, and the message they receive says your key is DEF456. Any message they send you encrypted to DEF456 could be automatically decrypted and subsequently encrypted to ABC123.

The only real way to guard against this is to meet the person in person and exchange keys after checking photo ID, and otherwise confirming you can trust the person.

The above is probably one reason why automatic encryption will never be implemented. It is superior for individual users to be responsible for their own privacy.
2309  Other / Politics & Society / Re: E-mail spam from the Trumpsteins on: September 02, 2020, 08:20:31 PM
If a political campaign is able to get your money, you are less likely to change your vote out of that candidate as long as they remain in the race. Fundraising dollars also allow a political campaign to reach more voters with their message. The messages cost next to nothing to send and are unlikely to dissuade anyone from donating, nor from voting for the candidate.

This is not unique to the Trump campaign, or Republicans. If you find yourself on Creepy Joe Biden's email list, you should expect to receive just as many solication emails. I would expect Biden to try to rub your shoulders until you are willing to send him money.

Rather it's about racism being endemic in the US police force (and to an extent this being symptomatic of racism within elements of the wider society).
There is no evidence to support this statement.

Yes, there is. Of course the dataset is limited because this is just shootings, and doesn't include instances of police murdering people through choking or neck-kneeling.

There is no reason to measure lethal police shootings by population because different races interact with the police at different rates because  they commit crimes at different rates.

As a rate of /per police interaction, black people are less likely to be killed by the police than white people. There are over 300 million police interactions with citizens every year, and of those 300 million interactions, there are less than 10 unarmed black people killed by police each year.

In the 3 months of BLM/anifta riots in the US, many more black people have been killed by the BLM terrorists than unarmed black people will be by police in a year. This is only counting in the riots. If a black person is going to be killed by another person (justified or not), they are over 250 times more likely to be killed by another black person (who is not the police), than being unarmed and by the police.

If you are referring to Floyd, the medical examiner said in his report that if he had not been influenced by the video of Floyd's last minutes, he would have said that Floyd died from a drug overdose. Floyd's lungs were twice as heavy as what was to be expected; this explains why Floyd was saying that he couldn't breathe before he was put into the police car and while he was still standing on his feet.
2311  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 07:56:58 PM
I would not try to time fee rates when deciding the costs/benefits to opening a LN channel. This would be like saying you have a guaranteed way to make money that is you will 'buy low and sell high'. BTC fee rates may rise and fall over time that follow patterns, but these patterns can end or change at any time.

Do you consider consolidating UTXOs at 1 sat/byte as the same then? If you can save even more money and enjoy instant payments at the same time just by opening your channel at the right moment then I don't see any problem. It appears to me to be as clever as consolidating inputs.
I would not try to time fee rates when deciding the costs/benefits to opening a LN channel.
You don't even have to time it, you can just wait for fees to drop, and then make a transaction. I know this doesn't guarantee anything for the future, but my counter argument would be fees can rise right after broadcasting any Bitcoin transaction.
When you are sending a payment via LN, you will not need to deal with any type of change output, therefore you will not need to pay anything to consolidate change outputs, ever. When you spend coin on-chain, you will receive a change output, and eventually you will need to pay to consolidate two or more change outputs. If you have enough other coin, you can send a tx to yourself with a low fee, and hope the txn will eventually confirm (it may not). Or you can pay an increased fee (in terms of blockspace) for a txn that has two inputs and two outputs for something you would normally buy, and in this case you generally need to pay a 'market' fee. In both cases, you are incurring costs in addition to what you would 'normally' incur when dealing with on-chain txns.
2312  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are people so offended by W.A.P.? (and sex in general) on: September 02, 2020, 04:54:48 PM
Girls in it weren’t even hot.. Kinda yuck to me actually..
IMO they are quite ugly frankly.

There are popular songs about sex, but this song is especially explicit. There are limits as to what people are willing to accept, and I think this song exceeds those limits.
2313  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 04:39:49 PM
In order to realize cost benefits of using LN, you must make at least three LN payments, assuming consistent fees, at least 66.67% cost savings per/tx and a non-zero cost of making a LN transaction. If you don't plan on making at least 3 txns, you are probably better off using on-chain txns.
I can think of a different scenario: you can open a LN-channel when fees are low, and make a low-fee transaction when you need it at a later moment. Especially when paying for a time-sensitive service this could save you money.
It can fail though: I've had a channel that didn't open because my low-fee transaction took to long to confirm, and when it was closed it did CPFP which lead to a much higher fee.
I would not try to time fee rates when deciding the costs/benefits to opening a LN channel. This would be like saying you have a guaranteed way to make money that is you will 'buy low and sell high'. 2314  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 04:15:37 PM
In order to move the coins back on-chain, you need to close the channel.
<>

However, if you're looking to sell just something, and to instantly convert your LN Bitcoin to on-chain Bitcoin, you're better off just asking for a Bitcoin payment. LN only has benefits if you make multiple transactions to enjoy the low fees.
In order to realize cost benefits of using LN, you must make at least three LN payments, assuming consistent fees, at least 66.67% cost savings per/tx and a non-zero cost of making a LN transaction. If you don't plan on making at least 3 txns, you are probably better off using on-chain txns.

LN channels are really designed to be kept open near infinitely. The cost savings for using LN will increase exponentially as you keep channels open longer, specifically, how many txns you send on a channel (the exponent is very small).
2315  Other / Meta / Re: I know exactly when I will rank up! on: September 02, 2020, 01:58:01 AM
I am happy you will be a legendary within the next two weeks. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that nothing is impossible, so who knows what will happen at the next activity period (I kid, I kid).

There is somewhat of an argument that people with very high merit should have lessor activity requirements to rank up. Maybe once a user has 110% of the merit required to rank up (excluding any merit they had 'grandfathered'), 1/2 of additional merit they receive could go towards required activity, up to a limit. This could be an additional reward for those of us who are stong contributors to the forum community.
2316  Other / Politics & Society / Re: idiot police - jacob blake shooting on: August 31, 2020, 04:15:20 AM

@PrimeNumber7 the children mentioned are his three small children, and I don’t think that he was ever going to harm them.
I don't think there is any basis to support this statement. Blake is a known violent criminal (which was known to police at the time), and is accused of grabbing someone by the pussy without consent (or warning).

Lastly this is a cold blooded murder and it took place because Blake was black, and American police needs to stop these murders asap.
1, Blake is not dead, so it is not murder. 2, there is zero evidence to support this is ratially motivated. The same is true for other recent police shootings involving black men. It is also true for the George Floyd case, in fact the body cam footage that the Democrat AG tried to keep under wraps is evidence that it was not racially motivated.

2317  Other / Politics & Society / Re: idiot police - jacob blake shooting on: August 30, 2020, 12:14:32 AM
Blake was under lawful arrest, and was fleeing, which makes him a fleeing felon. Police can use lethal force to protect themselves or the public from immediate harm.

There were children in the car, and Blake was holding a knife. If the police has not used force to stop Blake, he could have taken the children hostage, or he could have used the knife on the children.

I'm glad you were able to get your account back. You should make a post in the beginners and help section about how you were able to secure your computer once you realized it had been infected with a virus.

2320  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump tries to cancel Goodyear, Backfires on: August 27, 2020, 04:55:07 PM
I see no reason why anyone would want to buy Goodyear tires. If you need tires, you should get them elsewhere that are better quality for a lower price.

Goodyear is making in kind contributions to the DNC and CCP in their policy. If they are not reporting these contributions to the FEC, they are breaking the law.

Their policy is that employees can only support organizations that seek to bring communism to the US. Anyone doing business with Goodyear is indirectly supporting communism.

This is off topic, but I think it is a very good year to get re-elected as President.
