2341  Other / Archival / Re: What is lastest Electrum version work with XP? on: May 13, 2021, 02:59:17 PM
Try something below v3.0.0?

Electrum was shifted to Python3 (3.5.X) by then and I believe the support for Python in WinXP has already ended with 3.4.X, I believe. You can do some dubious modifications to make it work, by manually installing the dependencies but you won't really get anything done with it.

Isn't 3.0.0 close to the cutoff for connections due to the phishing attack or have servers been made to connect with older versions again?

@OP can you dualboot? I have a laptop I switch hard drives in from win7 to ubuntu depending on the task and stuff seems to work when I do that - I'm fairly sure an old XP Desktop can Boot off just about anything (even an sd card, which later builds can't).

You're also going to have to keep an eye on the security issues if you expect to use XP long term. I'd also look at if it's possible to host something like virtual box off an XP machine and then you can install win7 or win 10 on there but your system still fully relies on the security of XP.
2342  Economy / Economics / Re: how to solve the liquidity correlation between BTC and altcoin? on: May 13, 2021, 05:49:39 AM
Was there a loss of liquidity or was there an arbitrage opportunity?

A loss of liquidity implies you're unable to place an order at market without it getting filled or some slippage imo? Did you experience either of these?

The reason I mention arbitrage also is that people will be comparing methods of moving btc to usd via another pair to see if it's cheaper to go that way. In this case, due to both bitcoin and the dollar being liquid.

Alts are their own thing, if people were confident buying eth and maintaining its price while btc fell, it would've happened.
2343  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is there really a Tether guarantee? on: May 13, 2021, 02:16:15 AM
I don't know how people normally work when they trade but I'm predominantly trading with tether on usdc futures with binance but I have a btc long against it to the value of btc I started with so the binance volume might reflect this.

Tether was likely a money making tool and will probably be replaced by a decentralised approach also.
2344  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk supporting greener crypto on: May 13, 2021, 01:03:15 AM
I'm just rifling through them now learning about them and trying to gauge which ones Musk could tout next Smiley

I think the old adage "buy the rumour and sell the news" works well in these wild west days of crypto.

Yeah I'm not sure coinbase is the fastest to respond though so they might be the news part of the equation... Still the earnings from their tutorial videos should act as a good hedge.

There's probably a few other twitter accounts you could check that people might be following for rumours too (I assume people like cz binance are mentioned in news articles). The news still brings a bit of a peak in price too.
2345  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk supporting greener crypto on: May 13, 2021, 12:43:10 AM
I reckon he'll get into something like Cardano which will provide a bit of "green washing PR".

I didn't sell any Bitcoin BTW as I can't be bothered thinking about capital gains tax, my no-doubt British buddy Smiley

I was actually thinking eth or decred would be ones to go for for this but especially eth once it gets the upgrade in November.

I haven't looked into cardano much tbh but I remember it's been around for a while so it's possible they'll pick that one.

I thought it was funny Solana replied to his tweet though Grin.
2346  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin without electricity on: May 13, 2021, 12:37:28 AM
Put a wireless charger on the payment processor or anywhere in the store. A contactless card is also being charged by the till when you put it on a scanner, it's one of the reasons you have to activate it first (I think) and definitely the reason why the more you use it, the easier it is to scan.

In Europe this is kinda already a thing if you have custom in a restaurant or a bank you could expect to use a plug if one is available. Many places also have charging areas too outside for homeless people and people on breaks from work etc.
2347  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk supporting greener crypto on: May 13, 2021, 12:30:32 AM
He's just talking shit like normal.

My short was placed at 17:00 GMT based on TA, and sold at 48k as expected. The drop was due, he might have made it faster but the drop was due.

Also this is really predatory behaviour "I want to be the only polluter" - he's mining and extracting lithium and sending rockets and satellites to space. Since the only place green energy isn't cheaper than gas and coal is the US (where the government subsidises it)...

On currencies his cult already worship doge so probably that...
2348  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The urge to quit on: May 12, 2021, 07:35:44 PM
Don't quit but ensure you REEVALUATE everything.

If you're learning to trade, don't do it with an amount you value so much you'll keep checking it.

If you trade with 10%, it can still become 100% within 100 trades and from there you're just making profit on top of that... (Only 10% once you know what you're doing, you should start with even lower than that).

Also I'm not sure how much training can do for you, as long as they're able to teach fundamentals then they're probably alright but remember to use their strategies and training as inspiration for your own as markets change pace fast... And once enough people are trading a certain strategy, it no longer works.
2349  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Contrary to popular belief blockchains can make external web calls on: May 12, 2021, 05:13:03 PM
Doesn't this affect the decentralised nature if you're making calls to Web 2.0 interfaces?

Admittedly the fees are high at the moment but the hope is that all information can be stored in a decentralised blockchain (where necessary). If private data needs to be put on there it can also fairly easily be obfuscated (I think legal companies have done this in the past to use each other's computation without giving away personal info).
2350  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to tell when to dump an entire project/coin? Overall gain loss... on: May 12, 2021, 05:05:11 PM
Have you been buying these coins from the market or buying an ico?

For an ico I'd say if it doesn't reach and trade at about 75% of the coins price within 24 hours after it's been listed, that's probably a good time to sell.

In the chart and news you'd look for dramatic moves that have occurred and anything that doesn't look like it's just being manipulated (eg a bull flag, a wedge or a triangle that seems to follow some sort of order - like 5 bounces before a breakout).

I'd look at the volume too and how that compares, if the price increases but volume doesn't then that might be something to take note of... Also the order books are going to provide quite a bit of information as to how sought after the coin is. No swing trader wants to be holding bags they can't sell.
2351  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to create a bitcoin account? on: May 12, 2021, 03:46:41 PM
It's free to create one. Your use case will depend on what you need.

If you're looking to trade, you can make a account on an exchange like coinbase.com.

If you're looking to earn/store earnt funds then you can use a piece of software like electrum (from electrum.org).

If you want to learn and be part of the network you could also look at downloading bitcoin core (but you need a lot of storage space if running out of the box). The links to download bitcoin core are available at the top of this page (just above the "home" button's panel).
2352  Other / Meta / Re: Why are "Likes" turned off in this forum? on: May 11, 2021, 06:43:31 PM
It's just how it's been. It's been like that for at least 6 years so I don't think it's going to change.

If a thread is already big, one additional comment won't make it too much bigger and if it isn't already big then there's nothing to worry about.

I'm assuming it's because the forum started off as a small community and the admins didn't think it'd get this big. Also you might be able to use PMs instead if you don't want to reply in some cases.
2353  Economy / Economics / Re: CBDCs are not an "opportunity". They'll likely offer you less than you have now. on: May 11, 2021, 06:20:12 PM
Yeah point 2 applies especially to current centralised exchanges as well as things like national debt.

Countries could just start wiping the slate clear by altering a couple of numbers. There's a chance some countries will offer a decentralised solution but it won't be as secure as the current blockchains we have now (dcr, eth and btc).

Additionally, chances of getting physicals like gold on chains allows for even more inflation to be added to the asset (as has already been done with vaulted gold). There could be algorithmic increases too thst are harder to track (eg you possess a kilo today, 980 grams next year, 965 grams the year after)...
2354  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Coinbase Pro converting one currency for another? on: May 09, 2021, 02:10:37 AM
You've got two options.

You go: xlm -> btc/fiat -> ltc
Or you withdraw your xlm to normal coinbase and convert that way (potentially fee free). What you decide might depend on how mucb you're trying to transfer - if it's less than a few $k then converting might be the best option. Jus tremember not to withdraw on the normal coinbase interface as it'll likely be more expensive.
2355  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: May 07, 2021, 06:48:00 PM
It would probably be better to use a bookmark instead of relying on memorizing links or relying on 3rd party sites give you addresses of businesses that you are sending money to.

Might leave a bit of a trace though in your browsing history compared to some random words written down...

I deposited over 24 hours ago on http://chipmixerwzxtzbw.onion

waiting for it but not going to step 2, blockchain shows lots and lots of confirmation and I emailed support and no reply in 24 hours?

Jump to step 2. It won't do it automatically because you'll have no script enabled on tor (hopefully).

If you've jumped past step 2 you might have to wait for a reply from them (if you've made a deposit since)..
2356  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining Doge on: May 07, 2021, 04:37:59 PM
My old phone used to output 700kh/s with scrypt so I don't think it's using the graphics card.

You might want to paste the command you used to run the miner for better support. And if you have an output of Joe the device is mapped from the console.
2357  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I need to site to filter Volume and Price on: May 07, 2021, 03:55:33 PM
Exchanges like binance do this already on their landing pages (at least on the mobile they do - their site is really sluggish on desktop).
2358  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto beginner questions -offline vs online crypto, selling, buying etc on: May 07, 2021, 03:41:31 PM
I'd recommend a hardware wallet (from the official sites like trezor.io - don't use amazon!)

I think the safest online wallet is electrum but I haven't looked at many others. You can use electrum with hardware if you wanted to also.

If you don't want to get hardware but have an old computer spare then I'd suggest looking into airgapping a version of electrum to be as safe as hardware (eg not connecting to the Internet while using it).
2359  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Can someone explain what happenend here? on: May 07, 2021, 02:46:10 PM
Do you have access to your old account on there too? Is there a chance you didn't withdraw everything?

If they're a small company, they could've emailed you a receipt that'll contain a breakdown of the fees you paid.
2360  Economy / Speculation / Re: At this bullish season, bullish person is always right? on: May 07, 2021, 11:31:12 AM
Yeah doge is probably a bubble, I'm surprised it hasn't been 51%ed yet to be honest...

I think the good thing about doge is it mightve forced people to use crypto exchanges to use it (and they might have bought btc and eth too).

Eth is another one that's doing well and kinda makes me think bitcoin is nowhere near its top yet. (I think eth would fall back to around 0.04 at least before btc gets able to take off for its last time this cycle).
