I am curious how they would respond to the tens, if not hundreds of millions dead due to CCP incompetence.

My bet is they would blame it on a terrorist attack or another country attacking them like possibly the USA..
I am curious as to how much the Chinese people actually believe what their government tells them. This is hard to measure because there is consequences for dissent.

The damn was supposed to be a symbol of the accomplishments of the CCP and of communism. I am not sure how much the CCP can deflect blame on others if it were to fail.
2382  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: August 10, 2020, 03:27:09 PM

As for Republicans - I wouldn't bet on them growing a collective spine if they think that this EO can help them in the election.
Is this kinda how Creepy Joe Biden, Nervous Nancy, Cryin Chuck, or any otherdemocrat for that matter refuses to stand up to the rioters, looters, or BLM/Anifta terrorists, as long as they think their actions will help the left in the election?
2383  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: August 09, 2020, 10:59:59 PM

The legality of Trump's actions are dubious, however it would be stupid politically to try to take action to try to stop it. Trump is redirecting money earmarked for FEMA to pay for the enhanced benefits, so there is money appropriated, which means it isn't a guarantee Trump looses in court. If Trump were to be stopped, Congress would need to sue the Trump administration, which means democrats would own it. Democrats suing to stop the enhanced benefits would mean they would take the blame for the stopped benefits, the lock-downs would be even more unpopular (hurting down ballot elections).

I wouldn't be surprised to see republicans put up a fight as well since this is the kind of move conservatives have been campaigning on preventing forever.  A few have already spoken out on it.

Individual senators have no authority to challenge Trump's actions. Any legal challenge would need to come from the House as an institution, or the Senate as an institution. I am not sure what specifically can trigger a challenge by the Senate or the House, but it would likely start with leadership of the majority agreeing to want to take action, and there being a vote.

Pelosi and Schemer overplayed their hands in the negotiations. Biden meanwhile is in a tough spot, if he is supportive of Trump's actions, he is praising his opponent, however if he is critical of Trump's actions, he is seen as being against helping unemployed Americans.

Trump is trying to gut social security and decide what to do with the money on his own without congress.  Seems pretty easy spot for democrats to me - nothing they do would really change the view of people who believe they are 'against helping unemployed Americans'.

In the end I think Trump is pissing off the Republicans by stripping congress of power and Democrats for going after social security.
Trump is making the issue of middle tax cuts an election issue. He is making it an election issue and will force Democrats to either agree that Trump is doing the right thing, or campaign on raising taxes on the middle class, both of which would hurt house Democrats, either with their base, or with moderates.

The payroll tax cut is an additional incentive to get back to work. If they were making $10/hour before the pandemic, they would now effectively be making ~$10.62/hour upon returning to work. The more people that return to work, the more opportunities of those without a job will have to get a job.

Trump is not gutting Social Security. In ~2011(?), when there was a temporary 2% tax holiday on social security taxes, Obama directed the treasury to put government bonds of equal value of the lost tax revenue into the social security trust fund, and I have every reason to believe Trump would do the same thing. Further, the difference between cutting the payroll tax and sending a cash payment to those who make under a threshold is a distinction without a difference, as in both cases it is the Federal government that needs to borrow to pay for it.
2384  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: August 09, 2020, 04:17:38 PM
Afaik the lightning network currently supports the 15th decimal place...

Cute, but unless BTC is worth $10 million what does that realistically achieve? Where are you going to spend $0.0000000002?
Does that have a practical use case besides being a proof of concept?
This is something that will keep fees down.

If a txn has to pass through many 'hops' to get to its destination, each node will compete to have the txn pass through the node. The cost for one hop is low, but as LN matures, it will be more common for txns to have many (20, 50, or 100+) hops, especially to merchants with low transaction volume, and the cost to make the txn can add up. This plus the possibility that bitcoin goes up by 10, 100 or 1000x.
2385  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: August 09, 2020, 04:05:28 PM
Met in the middle with a 400$/wk federal unemployment supplement. Dem's wanted $600/wk up until January, Republicans wanted $200/wk. He also introduced a payroll tax cut.
It is actually $300/week paid by the federal government, with the condition that states pay an additional $100/week.

Here Trump is taking credit for helping unemployed Americans, while also making the lock-downs less popular. This should both help Trump get votes from moderates, while also hurting democrats in down ballot races in state and local elections.

Power of the executive is forever increasing. No stopping it at this point. Trump will also use this to his advantage during the debates claiming Nancy Pelosi stopped the checks.

The most genius part of all this is Trump holding the press conference at his NJ golf club, with members being able to attend, who are generally his supporters being how much they are paying to be a member there. This meant Trump got laughs, applause and cheering he would not normally get when making this kind of announcement.
2386  Other / Politics & Society / Re: New York Attorney General sues to DISSOLVE NRA on: August 08, 2020, 05:32:47 AM
This is one more example as to why qualified immunity should be repealed for all government officials, and replaced with a high threshold for officials to be held personally accountable for their actions.

The lawsuit is transparently political and she is using the government to attack her political enemies. While campaigning, she called the NRA a “terrorist organization” and she clearly had a preconceived outcome before the investigation started.

The NRA is most welcome to move it's corporate charter from New York, hostiles to guns, to any number of states who would welcome such things.
They could do that, but doing so in response to a politically motivated lawsuit would not be wise. The lawsuit was filed in Federal Court, so the NRA moving out of state would not remove the court's jurisdiction.

Quick everyone look over there at the NRA! No one look at Black Lives Matters "non-profit organization" status.
My guess is that if BLM does not even come close to following the law regarding their not for profit status. They likely are incorporated in a safe Democratic area, so state AGs will not investigate them, and any attempt of the DOJ trying to investigate BLM would likely quickly leak, would be condemned by the propaganda media, and evidence would be destroyed.

2388  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a list of members of the forum (preferably trusted) with ln nodes? on: August 07, 2020, 05:26:00 PM
Unless you are personally running a node, you really shouldn’t be connecting to a specific node. Doing so will open you up to Sybil attacks.

If you want additional privacy, you can run a node that connects to the rest of the network and your wallet software can only connect to that node.
didn’t see the ln in the topic.
2389  Other / Meta / Re: Can hCaptcha be used to replace ReCAPTCHA at BitcoinTalk? on: August 07, 2020, 06:10:26 AM
Which one of you convinced Google that the mailbox is a parking meter?
Welcome the new world order and the tyranny of the AI.

reCaptcha can sometimes be really weird to say the least, but their AI obviously still has some basic issues like recognizing a parking meter from a mailbox. This is one of the problems that AI has from the very beginning, some seemingly simple things are still complicated for them, and there seems to be no progress in the last 5 years -> Simple Pictures That State-of-the-Art AI Still Can't Recognize.

captchas are used to prevent people from using automation to solve the 'puzzle'. This includes preventing an adversary from using their own AI from solving puzzles.

An important aspect of training AI is to allow a model to attempt to solve a puzzle (make a prediction), and to subsequently give the model feedback as to how it performed. If you give a model bad/inaccurate feedback, its best possible performance is bad. If you pass an image of a mailbox into a model, and tell the model it is wrong when it correctly predicts the image is not of a parking meter, in the future the model will make less accurate predictions.

If the puzzle that SM was asked to solve was presented again, the person SM might not choose the parking meter to be a mailbox, while AI might classify it to be a mailbox after receiving feedback that it is. Or a future puzzle might ask SM to choose all the mailboxes, and present the same picture, Sm the person would choose that picture, while a model might not choose that picture after receiving feedback that it is of a parking meter. Someone who makes either of these 'mistakes' might be presented an additional challenge.

In other words, the "mistake" that SM highlighted was not a mistake.

There is a damn that is very close to failing (the three georges damn).

Has been talk of this for about a month..
Pics show it quite crooked looking..

If that dam goes then it would probably be the worst disaster in history..
The construction of the damn was supposed to be a major accomplishment of the CCP. They had to displace millions just to construct the damn. The symbolism of it failing would be that communism (Democrats) is not how to run society.

The death from the damn failing would be huge. The CCP has a very strong grip on their people, but I am curious how they would respond to the tens, if not hundreds of millions dead due to CCP incompetence.
2391  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: August 05, 2020, 06:43:39 AM
Once again, Bitfinex officials  proved that they did not throw their words to the wind and announced " $400 Million Reward to Return Stolen Bitcoin:". Good deal, isn't it? Interesting that hacker is eligible too. Does he have the courage to take advantage of this offer
The hacker giving the coin back to bitfinex would mean bitfinex would not corporate with law enforcement (to the extent they can) regarding the hack, and may allow the hacker to receive coin in bitcoin on their platform, which would allow the hacker to purchase a privacy centric coin that law enforcement would have difficulty tracing.
2392  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "eat out to help out" Boris's latest idea. on: August 05, 2020, 05:34:12 AM

This is one of the big reasons that I favor a direct cash payment. Put the hands into people and let them use it, they're going to use it on things that they need (or even save it), and if they use it on things that they need (or want) they're going to stimulate the economy.

In the US, the savings rate has spiked, to the point that the stimulus money is not being spent, aka is not stimulating the economy. Credit card debt is down ~10% from prior to the start of the lockdowns, which is great for those who are paying down debt, but this is not really the purpose of the stimulus payments.

The industries that are subsidized can be the hardest hit, so it would not be so much as picking winners and losers, but rather helping some of the losers become winners, who are only losers because of bad government policy (lockdowns).

I would also note that this type of stimulus will not only help industries being subsidized, it will help get people to go out of their houses, which will lead to people patrionizing businesses that are not being subsizied. This will also make the lockdowns less popular. If people are being paid enough to cover rent, necessities plus some to save, they will of course favor the lockdowns, even without a pandemic, but if they are being encouraged to go out, they will not favor the lockdowns, and will be more willing to return to work.

There is a damn that is very close to failing (the three georges damn). If it fails, 1/3 of the population of China is in cities downstream from this damn. The Three Georges damn failing, especially if it collapses verses getting overflowed, would make the death toll caused by the coronavirus look like nothing.

China is likely trying to avoid the Three Georges from failing. In the process, they appear to be harming their food supply, which will make them be less aggressive against other countries, such as the US as China will need to depend on the rest of the world for food.
2394  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "eat out to help out" Boris's latest idea. on: August 05, 2020, 02:08:00 AM
I clicked on this thread thinking it would be about an entirely different kind of stimulus program.  Grin

I am not sure about the UK and Europe, but in the US, most of the GDP decline was due to consumer spending tanking. An efficient stimulas program will need to get consumers to actually spend their stimulus money instead of using it to pay down debt, or put it in the bank.

It would probably be better if this program had limits to prevent people from abusing it, and to prevent subsidizing spending that would have happened regardless of the stimulus program.
2395  Economy / Auctions / Re: Auction - 8+ Digits Rare Vanity Adresses on: August 05, 2020, 02:00:21 AM
I am selling the private key (full ownership) of this very rare BTC vanity addresses:

As a FYI to anyone considering to buy this: it is impossible to prove the OP deleted the private key once he sends it to you, therefore any potential buyer cannot store any coin with this private key without the risk of your coin being stolen.

If you are interested in "buying" a vanity address, I would suggest going to this thread. The process described in the referenced thread will result in the person creating the vanity address having no way to know your private key.

We got a live one!!!

As the title says, I'm willing to pay someone to share his access to OpenAIs GPT-3. No special usecase, just thrilled to test it out! Just send me an offer.

Watch out for that "test" folks.
There are plenty of use cases, not related to the forum that someone might want to use the API with, both legitimate and not legitimate.

Legitimate use case are simply separated from not legitimate by a simple, clear and unmissable disclaimer of use of this technology. Otherwise it is not legitimate.
I think this restrict massively the field of application. As the most intiguing would be the not legitimate use on social media, forum included.
I specifically did not use the word “legitimate” in my post. It is my opinion that it would most likely be used to either manipulate social media, or to get additional followers on social media. I don’t think either of these reasons to use this technology would be legitimate ethical.

I also don’t think it is necessary to disclose prominently that AI is being used to publish material. For example I believe the Washington post uses some kind of AI for some of its play by play sports reporting. There are also many companies that use chat bots to respond to customer inquiries.

My point is that someone trying to buy access to GPT API is not necessarily going to use it on the forum.

Quote
I can't wait to discover a couple of GPT-3 bots arguing over Twitter about a deepfake video of Donald Trump.
Deepfakes are very difficult to create, and videos are even more difficult. Social media companies will take down deepfakes they detect.

We got a live one!!!

While there are plenty of cases, why would he ask about in this forum rather than AI/ML forum/community?
As mentioned above, I don’t think most use cases this person is likely to be using are legitimate. There are also not many AI/ML forums around. I don’t think an attempt to conduct business would be appropriate for stack overflow. There are kaggle forums but these are mostly used for specific competitions.
2397  Economy / Reputation / Re: BitcoinGirl.Club hacked? on: August 04, 2020, 05:13:31 AM

Whoever hacked his account committed a criminal act by doing so. Admins don't have to disclose whatever info they find, but it should at least be looked into as they could have been stupid and left breadcrumbs leading them to other users. At the very least he needs his account back so they're going to have to look into fairly deeply to get it back to him.
You are correct in saying that whoever allegedly hacked BitcoinGirl.Club broke the law. Howeer given the lack of apparent financial damages, and the appearance this is an isolated incident, law enforcement is likely to do little more than take a report.

If this becomes a more common occurrence, I am sure the admins will be able to use any information available from this hack.

I disagree, besides it would be more of a reputation issue to me and it would be nice to know who to not trust. What if there's clear evidence linking them to an existing user here and they're allowed to go on free with an unblemished rep.
It would be nice to know who not to trust. You are free to petition the admins to get involved, but I doubt they will for something this petty.

If the admins say they don't know who was behind the hack, whoever is behind the hack would know they are in the clear (somewhat). If they are outed as the hacker, they might destroy evidence for when the police come knocking on their door.
2398  Other / Meta / Re: Protecting Your Account on: August 03, 2020, 10:55:08 PM

I believe the hacker discovered his email address simply by clicking on his profile & discovering the email there & the rest is history.

I am not sure about this. As recently as June 28, BitcoinGirl.Club had their email address hidden.

Either the setting was changed since then, their email leaked from one of many database leaks of bitcoin related services, or someone knew their email address some other way.

Do you think LFC was tricked into sending those messages? Do you think SB withheld coin under questionable circumstances?
