Lerner said the practice was initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati and was not motivated by political bias.
...
In some cases, groups were asked for their list of donors, which violates IRS policy in most cases, she said.
...
The forms, which the groups made available at the time, sought information about group members' political activities, including details of their postings on social networking websites and about family members

WTF? How is this NOT politically motivated?

And what was the disposition of the donor lists? Were they forwarded to anyone?
242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new Catchy name for 0.0001 BTC? on: May 10, 2013, 05:11:56 PM
How about 4bit?  This would be in line with a broader convention that abbreviates the number of decimal place shifts.  So 2bit would be 0.01, 3bit would be 0.001, and so on.
243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new Catchy name for 0.0001 BTC? on: May 10, 2013, 05:09:17 PM
millicoin informally.

If I was pricing something in print I would just use mBTC.

Wouldn't millicoin imply 0.001 BTC?  (one less decimal place)

245  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does low number of Bitcoin Facebook "Likes" prove we are all early adopters? on: May 10, 2013, 03:18:02 PM
I recently removed my "like" from Bitcoin on Facebook, along with all the other likes for groups having to do with agorism, anarchism, voluntaryism, free-staters, etc.  I figured why make life any easier for all the three-letter agencies out there?

I did not "Like" Bitcoin and neither any of my friends, you wouldn't want to give a company that already has so much information even more information that could potentially make you a target.

Facebook is just bad news.  They don't care what injury they cause as long as they're making some coin.  And if a govt agency leans on them with the threat of reducing their profits they aren't going to fight it.

60w light bulbs were made illegal in the EU a few years ago - we must now use low energy light bulbs which cost 10 times as much.  But there are no dodgy light bulb salesmen hiding in doorways trying to sell me illegal light bulbs.

Well, have you worked in a Baumarkt some time ago? They were CRUSHED by the demand and people ran their doors in. They all bought every single light bulb you could find, because peopel are sceptical of these low energy lights.

Which is a good thing, since the new technology to look at is LED and banning lightbulbs was premature. They should have been banned together with energy saving bulbs running on Mercury at the same time, leaving the market open for only LED.

I've always contended that if CFL bulbs had become popular through natural market forces then they would have been banned because of the mercury.

Since you can use one 3d printer to make most of the parts for another 3d printer, a ban on them would be pretty futile.  One of the goals of the open source 3d printers is to be able to print a printer.

btw - the latest progress on quantum computers is that researchers have been able to create CNOT gates with quantum dots.  CNOT gates can be used to form all other types of gates.

Google for more info, but here is a good article on it:

249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do most bitcoin users actually think.. on: May 08, 2013, 05:07:24 PM
The simplest transaction occurs face-to-face where one person physically hands another person some money in exchange for something else.  In the absence of electricity and connected devices there is no (easy) way to do face-to-face bitcoin transactions.  Online transactions are just virtual representations of the simple transaction.  Most people do not want to clutter their daily lives with exchange rates and multiple currencies.  Since they will always need to have currency for the simple face-to-face transactions, and they can use the same currency for online transactions, there is very good motivation to stick to that currency.  Aside from some evangelical bitcoiners, people will continue to use fiat currencies as their base of operation AND their frame of reference until bitcoins can be made to work for those simple real-world transactions.

I'm sure he's pushing MS to get their own altcoin out there.  Given their penchant for ambiguous names that co-opt standard definitions, they'll probably name it something like MSbitcoin, bitcoin.dollars, or MSBucks.

Just remember that Bitcoin was MEANT to empower normal people - undermining the power of bankers and the other Wall Street bastards. As soon as bankers and Wall Street bastards start to play with Bitcoin, it may be its end.

Just my 0.02BTC

We cannot escape a fundamental truth about humanity: If something has value, then powerful and wealthy people will seek to acquire and control it.

Therefore Bitcoin has 3 possible futures:
1) Continuously adapt and operate outside of the reach of such control,
2) Give into the control - but possibly under different and better "rules" than centralized currencies, or
3) Become irrelevant and unused and fade into history.

don't people recognize satire when they see it anymore?

in the 50's before govt regulation, satire was everywhere.

+1 !

I would like to know how I could put an order in for 105 and mtgox magically makes me buy at 103??  What the hell was that?  The candle in question never touched 105.........ever.

In what alternate dimension is $103 really $105??

When you put in the order for $105, you are technically saying that $105 is the most you will pay.  They matched you with a lower ask so you only paid $103.

The opposite is true when selling.  The sell price you stipulate means this is the lowest amount I will accept.

Just curious as to what the seller in this case was asking.  Hopefully it was $101... but this is MtGox, so who knows.

Can someone help me reach the minimum threshold at Slush's pool? I've mined just 0.0026 BTC and it has taken weeks. Help would be appriciated, and I would send you your fair share for the work.

You might want to consider what you are asking of people to help you recoup what amounts to (at current exchange rates) 37 cents.  Chalk it up to some lessons learned and insight gained and leave it on the table.

260  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin/Litecoin Wallet Backup on: April 26, 2013, 09:17:29 PM
Thanks Aleksei, but I am trying to understand it better.  Wink

Okay, so when I back the wallet up with the Litecoin wallet, I get a "save as". Do I have to save it as "wallet.dat" so it replaces the original file. or can I call it something else like "newwallet.dat" as long as I save it to the same folder?

It's a backup of the original - so you don't want to overwrite the original.  Add the word "backup" to the name or just add ".bak" to make it "wallet.dat.bak" .

After that you should encrypt the file.  Then put the encrypted file in the backup location.
