241  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: December 06, 2014, 01:01:22 AM
Regarding infinite minting: this is both yes and no and is detailled in the OP
no, because the "regular emission" is 18.4 millions, so close to Bitcoin
yes, because we may implement a "tail emission", which is not present in Bitcoin. This tail emission would very small but also infinite. The point of this tail emission would be to provide an alternative to Satoshi's decision that "after BTC is fully mined, transaction fees will suffice to encourage continuous mining", something on which we disagree - hence tail emission.

Regarding "facts about the coin", I suggest you start by reading this:

Interesting reads.
Inflation is a interesting subject. The question is if tail emissions hurt the value of the coin or not.
I don't like inflationary coins. But Monero is obviously not some shitcoin like DOGE.
I mean at least there seems to be some thought put in to the decision to have tail emission.

Care to elaborate why you think tail emission is necessary? Is it the fear of hash power decreasing if the reward for miners drops?
242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: December 05, 2014, 10:59:12 PM
Inflation kills this coin. Is not it clear?

...temporally.
The inflation doesn't last forever.

I'm not that in to Monero. Can anyone link to facts about the coin?
I have tried to google info about inflation but haven't found anything.

Is Monero "limited" like BTC, or does it have infinite "minting" of new coins?
243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Slimcoin : Proof of Burn NEW BLOCK GEN, Mineable by low power computer! on: December 05, 2014, 10:05:11 PM
So this coin dead or what?
Blockquarry pool haven't found a block since 19th of July.

Funny even though it's a "shady" exchange you need to supply them with ID and other KYC bullshit.
But maybe you are right the "gangsters" probably knows the owner and can skip all the KYC stuff.

245  Economy / Services / Re: Book scanning! Support open culture and get a PDF/djvu of a book you want! on: December 05, 2014, 04:37:58 PM
Maybe it was so back in 2011. I don't know whether lucky's pricing has remained the same, but certainly "scanning" can has become much more quicker, thanks to the developments in handheld scanners/ scanning software built for tablets and definitely with DIY scanners (although this last one would apply to fewer people). With these, one can get a rough scan (i.e. not pretty looking, but there are software to improve rough scans substantially --the "receiver" can process the file with such software) of a circa 200 pages book in about half an hour, and certainly in less than one hour...

So what would your pricing for a 200 page book be?

I have heard rumours about the site being run by the Russian mob. Is their any truth to that?
247  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: btc-e vs market on: December 04, 2014, 08:10:57 PM
Just guessing here, but maybe the politcal climate of Russia is one reason.

Couldn't you have come up with a better name though?
Sounds like one of Peter Griffin's corporations...

Pete's Pirate Express local meaning, great for advertising.

Petey the pirate Smiley

Sorry it takes me a While to respond I am a TA for the University.

Ah! that explains it. I should have known better I am huge college sports fan. I guess it was the Pete part that got me thinking of Family Guy.

I've also thought about this. I hate when I can't find a rare book in PDF.
Buying a book from USA and ship it to Europe is expensive and feels unnecessary.

Problem is I didn't think it would be so time consuming to scan books. With current pricing the book I want would cost 0.202BTC or 77USD to scan. (202 pages)

It wasn't even available in your library anyways, so no big deal.

251  Economy / Gambling / Re: BTCBook.eu - Bitcoin SPORTSBOOK | DIRECT Payouts To Your Wallet | No Accounts! on: December 02, 2014, 05:06:20 PM
I like that there are more sites that are allowing sports betting. We really do not have enough of these.

I am not sure I am a fan of your anon betting though. It could potentially make it very easy for an attacker to trick someone into sending bitcoin to an incorrect address. It would also be easy for someone to withdraw a user's balance as all an attacker would need is the URL that is provided when you click the create new anon address and this would be accessible to a user's ISP/VPN provider

Hey crazy-pilot, thanks for your input! If you are worried about your ISP/VPN provider potentially knowing your account URL you can always request to have your bet payouts sent directly to your Bitcoin wallet so you never hold a balance on the website.

OK so I tried out the site last night. The odds seems to be better than DB, the design is good (kinda reminds me of bitbook.biz) transaction speeds are good.
Overall very good impression of the site.
It's an interesting concept with a anonymous account. I'm very pleased that you have an option to withdraw winnings directly after the bet is settled.

Personally I won't trust any online BTC book with my money. (especially since bitbook.biz went offline)
So the less time my BTC is on the site the better.

Any winners announced yet?
DB is deciding. Isn't it cute how they pretend that 400 people voted on this. They don't have 400 players. If they had 10,000 players 400 wouldn't vote in a week for alts. DB has been working hard signing up new names at BCT to vote.

I don't think DB created the shill accounts. Most likely DRK and XMR holders.
253  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: DRILLBIT SYSTEM Miners - Avalon range available - Now $104.99! on: November 19, 2014, 04:01:09 PM
Apparently somethings going on with Barntech as the alternative forum is gone. I can only hope the bad news ends with the website and that nothing directly occurred with those directly associated with drillbit systems.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The website is still up.
Maybe they are having hosting problem.
I think they are just busy with other things in life.

Exact error message:

Funny how all Darkcoin fans keep saying their coin is the best to implement since it's the same API as BTC.
I think that makes it less attractive.
Monero is more innovative and therefore a better choice IMO.

We already have 2 other options on the site that have the same API as BTC.
We don't need another "bitcoin lite" coin.
255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin changing my ideology from socialism to libertarianism! What about you? on: October 24, 2014, 10:03:52 PM
Nice idea.

But what it is, is, a mixture of God's original programming, mixed with the devil's counter-programming, influenced by God's counter-counter-programming, that He is using to save us all. Many will deny Him, of course, and His work won't save them.

Smiley

Save them from what? Selfishness?
256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin changing my ideology from socialism to libertarianism! What about you? on: October 16, 2014, 09:30:30 PM
2. One can have values that encompass aspects of both libertarianism and socialism if one does not create restrictive labels.
3. If we didn't have labels, OP doesn't need to transition between labels at all.

I only have one label. I'm a Red (not the hammer and sickle kind of Red - the cool kind).

2. Are you referring to the NAP being restrictive? I agree it is restrictive but in a good way. No force should be used ever. How is that bad?
3. I'm sorry but I disagree with you. I think that's stupid. That's like saying we should never say black people just people.

Generalization is bad, and "black people" is often used in such a context. But sometimes it isn't for example if you want to describe the history of blues music you might say:
"Blues music originated from black musicians in the deep south"

In the same way ideologies are easier to describe if you have labels as a reference point.

I hope you understand what I'm getting at. Don't get me wrong I hate labels but we cannot erase them completely it just wouldn't work.
257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin changing my ideology from socialism to libertarianism! What about you? on: October 16, 2014, 06:21:55 PM

Very gracious of you, forevernoob. It's hard to find people with enough grace to offer apologies to strangers online. Many pats on the back, you deserve!

Let me assure you though, I am not apolitical. I am very, very political. I am just an equal opportunity asshole, as posters on the Democratic Underground, Daily Paul and Hannity forum will testify. In fact, I am gigantic troll on the Vanguard Forum (those racist supremacists deserve it though).

The thing is, if I accept labels, I have to defend and/or adhere to the parameters of said labels.

If I label myself as a liberal/socialist, I cannot scream in anger at Obama for capitulating to the demands of Congress in keeping Guantanamo open.
If I label myself as a libertarian, I cannot applaud Obama's iron will in preventing the United States from entering into a third war in Syria, despite the insistence of his entire cabinet (including SecState Clinton, SecDefense Panetta, CIA Director Gen. Petraues and CJCS Gen. Dempsey) and the neoncons in Congress (watch this Senate Armed Services Committee Hearing: )
If I label myself as a conservative, I cannot give credit to Obama for presiding over the lowest growth in Federal gov size since the Eisenhower administration.
If I label myself as a Green, I cannot criticize Obama for signing the FAA Reauthorization Bill.

I will be too busy hedging and hemming and hawing my opinions to toe my self-imposed label. By remaining free of such labels, I can stand on my own principles and beliefs. I am certain, you are also not comfortable with the entire political parameters of libertarianism.

I know of libertarians who get ulcers trying to reconcile the idea of child labor into their belief system, just because it fits with the current paleolibertarian zeitgeist.
I also know of fundamentalist conservatives whose conscience is torn asunder as they attempt to deny gays their right to love (interesting read: the love affair of David and Jonathan in the book of Samuel).
I know of liberals who froth in the mouth when it was revealed that Obama ordered the assasination of American citizen Anwar Al-Awlaki (remember the DoJ whitepaper?).

If we are free from the shackles of labels, we are able to develop our own value system instead of relying on party platforms and flavor-of-the-month politicians. I feel insulted whenever someone tells me what I should think and believe in. Don't you feel the same?

Sometimes, I get the impression people are naming their favorite musical genres when speaking about their political beliefs.
Ooh, I'm a fan of techno and house music and I'm a crypto right wing anarchist.
Wow, you're so ordinary. I'm a fan of bluegrass and early Texas blues, and I'm a Jedi-liberal-constitutionalist.

Maybe you haven't noticed but I never outed myself as a libertarian in this thread. I'm not for throwing labels around.
But you cannot be a socialist and a libertarian at the same time.
Socialism uses force and therefor is not compatible with the non-aggression principle.

The OP stated that he made a transition from socialism to libertarianism.
If we didn't have labels there would be no discussion and the OP wouldn't be able to describe the transition.

Yeah, what happend to DBS team?

Barntech asked us if we were interested in new miners like 3 months ago.
Hopefully they are working on something new, and that's what's keeping them busy.
259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin changing my ideology from socialism to libertarianism! What about you? on: October 13, 2014, 10:52:53 PM
I read recently that if everyone on the planet lived with a Rwandan standard of living, Earth could feasibly support a population of 15 billion. But if everyone lived with a North American standard of living, Earth could only support 1.2 billion humans.

The trouble is, everyone wants the better standard of living and no one seems to want to stop breeding...

Well the North American standard of living is based on debt.
It might collapse any given day.

I think as we evolve to a better standard of living we will make better use of natural resources.
After all the market sets the prices, we wouldn't be driving around in ICE cars if gas was 100$ a gal.

Why it's all around you of course. Even in your mind in the forms of fear, jealousy, and hatred. If you cannot see it by now, it is probably beyond my power to cure your blindness. You've been blind a very long time.

That's just a bunch of feelings humans have. Has nothing to do with capitalism.
You don't think the same feelings would exist in a socialist system?
That's a bit funny since you are the one showing hatred towards capitalists. Or anyone with property I guess since you want to take it away from them by force. (using violence)
