241  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ICO] CoinPoker: Poker future is today! on: November 09, 2017, 11:12:42 AM
This is a really good idea. I thought previously that the future of online poker will be rake-free blockchain based dapps. I understand from the whitepaper that this isn't rake free which will be a harder sell but maybe still possible. Pokerstars will fight it though as they are the market leader by a long way now. I assume you know the story about full tilt poker which still leaves a bad taste in many of the top players mouths. If you can get this working and running well it could be a great project. Get some pros onside too and you could have a winner.
242  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin improve the economy of a country? on: November 09, 2017, 11:04:16 AM
I think it will do more harm than good to most economies. Mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies might eventually lead to devaluation of fiat local government controlled currencies. Things like bonds markets would be affected really badly and inflation could get out of control. The only economies that might benefit will be the ones that adopt early and create a good business atmosphere for cryptocurrency to flourish.

I hope so, straight after 2017 with a bit of luck and a fair wind Roll Eyes
244  Economy / Economics / Re: Does this mean Cash will be extinct? on: November 08, 2017, 07:40:26 PM
From what I've heard it's already pretty rare to pay for anything in cash in Sweden and almost everything is done on card. Someone described it to me that paying with cash in Sweden is seen like paying with cheque everywhere else and just a hassle for the merchant. Visa & mastercard must love that with their processing fees. The Nordics tend to lead the way on many things so it wouldn't surprise me if other countries followed suit. It makes sense really, here in the UK we've had terrible problems with counterfeiting in the last decade. A lot of older people wont want to move across and still love the feel of paper, millennials probably don't carry cash anyway. Probably the next stage will be similar to to the adoption of e-readers, they've revolutionized the industry but some people still like traditional books. Eventually cash in note and coin form will probably die out as new digital payment methods and cryptocurrencies become more mainstream. It will be interesting to see what happens with the CC processors in the future.
245  Economy / Economics / Re: What is a good amount of BTC to Buy? on: November 08, 2017, 07:28:58 PM
I'll be a contrarian and say you should only invest in what you can afford to lose and it's better to invest smaller amounts consistently over a longer period of time rather than to transfer as much as possible in one go. This method allows you to build a long-term position while mitigating some of the risk and inevitable volatility in the markets.
246  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What will you invest in after the fork? on: November 08, 2017, 06:19:30 PM
ETH looks like a solid buy and hold right now. It's been pushed down by BTC and the bug scandal but should bounce back due to the demand generated by ICOs using ETH contracts.
247  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: JSEcoin (Javascript coin) Browser mining, ASIC resistant! on: November 08, 2017, 06:14:52 PM
Hi Everyone,

I can confirm JSEcoin is definitely not dead Smiley We've been working hard on the on some big improvements behind the scenes:

The platform is now ready to scale up with multiple instances running behind a load balancer
The system data is now more secure being saved on a Google Firebase DB
Something really important to us has been making improvements to the whitepaper which have now been released at https://jsecoin.com/whitepaper.pdf

On a side note, this is probably obvious to most, but don't try buying any coins off the scammers. We've had bad reports from people who have been caught out by this. If you want to invest pre-ICO use the official funds page on the platform.

We are still finalizing some details but we've drafted a Bitcointalk ANN thread which will be posted shortly and we hope to get more involved in this community.

Thanks to rpjacobs for starting this thread and dealing with some of the more interesting replies.

Just to clarify we don't mine monero and we aren't really anything like BAT. If you'd like to find out more there's a FAQ at https://jsecoin.com/faq/ and probably the best way to learn about the platform is to create an account and do some test transfers and mining to see how it works.

Here's the registration link from the OP:

Thanks again to everyone that has been supporting us.
248  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: JSEcoin on: November 08, 2017, 05:51:03 PM
Total prize pool per day is:
1440 coins for publishers
720 coins for self-miners on the platform
This is divided up between all users who send traffic or use the mining platform. We use a custom algorithm on the publisher side which takes into account unique visitors and hashes so it is not directly correlated to hashes found or blocks mined.

Laineux we keep CPU usage lower than our competitors to ensure user experience on the website is not affected.

There's some more information here https://jsecoin.com/technical/
249  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] DAO PlayMarket 2.0 - App Store based on the blockchain and smart contracts on: November 08, 2017, 05:39:15 PM
The site crashing might be a good sign things are going well  Wink

Good luck with the ICO
250  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A newbie just killed Ethereum on: November 08, 2017, 05:17:57 PM
Wow a $150 million dollar bug. Ouch. Shows how high the stakes are when coding for cryptocurrency technologies.
251  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Money can buy happiness? on: November 08, 2017, 05:10:08 PM
You can't buy happiness but you can buy personal freedom from your job, worries, time restraints which helps. Certainly a lack of money can cause unhappiness so to some extent the opposite must be true.
252  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Mining vs Buying on: November 07, 2017, 04:35:26 PM
Buy ETH on exchange, it's going to be less risky with arguably more upside potential if the price and competition increases. The price has been stagnating recently due to the BTC fork but it should rise in the medium term as ETH is used widely for ICO's and smart contracts so there is strong demand outside of raw speculation.
253  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the perfect Cryptocurrency? on: November 07, 2017, 04:27:51 PM
I would argue that Bitcoin isn't perfect because it was designed nearly a decade ago at a time when it was impossible to foresee the current challenges. Most people will agree that there are coins/tokens out there which are built on better technology now but Bitcoin has the first mover advantage. It does provide elegant solutions though which is why it's stood the test of time and is still the number one cryptocurrency. I think there is a song "true perfection has to be imperfect"
254  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [☆☆ THERESAMAYCOIN ☆☆] SHA256 | POW/POS | Update block 62002 - 102001 on: November 07, 2017, 11:57:51 AM
What a great name for a coin. I hope she keeps the job long enough for the project to pick up some traction. Her position was in question a month or so ago but it seems to have settled down again now. Good luck with the project.
255  Other / Politics & Society / Open-Letter about the future of fin-tech in London on: November 07, 2017, 11:51:34 AM
This was sent to Karen Bradley MP and Greg Clark MP. I'll update the thread if I we receive any response.

I assume you have technical advisors and I hope they would have made you aware that the future of fin-tech is blockchain technology. If not I ask that you speak to an independent 3rd party to get a unbiased professional opinion on these matters.

I am writing to bring your attention to the current situation facing UK cryptocurrency businesses. London is meant to be the hub of fin-tech in Europe but companies involved in blockchain technologies aren't being allowed to operate here by the banks. A cynical person might say this is anti-competitive and they see cryptocurrency as a threat to their business models. Cryptocurrency will still go mainstream within the next ten years here in the UK and that is going to be an issue for the banks and the BoE. For every dollar invested in cryptocurrency (currently 100 billion and growing fast) that is a dollar not invested in Wall Street or the LSE. The devaluation of USD/GBP/EUR also seems highly likely in the medium-long term as money is moved to deflationary currencies rather than inflationary government controlled currency.

We are a cryptocurrency startup based in Cambridge and have been refused a current account by every bank in the UK because we are involved in cryptocurrencies. We have even heard horror stories of UK banks closing personal accounts because customers had transactions with popular bitcoin exchanges. Our company has been forced to open up an offshore bank account because we need banking to operate. This is going to be a huge missed opportunity for the UK if the business environment doesn't allow for the industry to grow and mature here.

Cryptocurrency will be the biggest revolution to society since the birth of the internet and London will miss out in the same way it did to Silicon Valley if action is not taken. Cryptocurrency has a bad reputation because of the Bitcoin/Silkroad scandal and other scams that have taken place but these are minor cases in a larger picture. The next bunch of unicorn companies will be blockchain based and the UK could really use the tax revenue from what will be some of the largest companies in the world in a decades time. I believe the government needs to step in primarily to create an acceptable business environment and also to bring in regulation to influence the growth of blockchain technologies both here and globally.

What can the British government do to address the issues facing cryptocurrency businesses in the UK?

Are you aware and prepared for how mainstream cryptocurrency adoption is going to change the financial systems?
256  Other / Off-topic / Re: What is the WORST movie you have ever seen? on: November 07, 2017, 11:29:46 AM
The Cube somehow it got a 7.3 on IMDB and is basically a bunch of bad actors stuck in a box for 120 minutes. Maybe it plays on peoples fears of claustrophobia or something, either way I didn't get it.
257  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why People Are Not Honest. on: November 07, 2017, 10:13:22 AM
I think the majority of people are good natured and honest. Their are exceptions and you can normally get a feel for if someone is trustworthy or not. Everyone has their own moral standards too and I'm sure we all could think back to a time when we "had" to be dishonest over something. Lead by example and stay honest, you don't have to remember so much that way  Cheesy
258  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Business Banking UK on: November 07, 2017, 09:49:06 AM
Thanks for the replies.

We've decided to look at offshore options as it seems the UK banking sector is anti-crypto/anti-competitive. The reason we've been given is that a large fine was given to one of the banks because they were involved in some money laundering scheme that involved cryptocurrencies. I did ask how many money laundering schemes had involved US dollars but alas... Apparently anything related to cryptocurrency is "high risk", we've even been told horror stories about people getting personal accounts closed because they had transactions going to popular bitcoin exchanges.

It gets even more bizarre because the banks are openly working on cryptocurrency projects.
http://uk.businessinsider.com/hsbc-and-barclays-join-project-to-build-cryptocurrency-for-banks-2017-8
"Barclays, CIBC, Credit Suisse, HSBC, MUFG and State Street, building alongside founding financial institutions UBS, BNY Mellon, Deutsche Bank, Santander, NEX and blockchain startup Clearmatics."

London is the self-proclaimed fin-tech hub for Europe and most techys will agree blockchain technology is the future of fin-tech. I can't help but think the banks are pushing out all the promising startups to register and bank offshore when they should be embracing and encouraging the cryptocurrency industry.

Anyway rant over, thanks again for the replies and good luck to any other UK members.

Not being able to post images until you reach a number of posts is a bit of a pain. I can understand why the moderators had to enforce this but perhaps the algorithm could be tweeked to make it more focused around time on site

260  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: ELECTRONEUM SPECULATION THREAD on: November 07, 2017, 08:48:06 AM
Electroneum has a good team in place and seems like a professional setup. Speculatively I would say this is a good medium-long term hold.
