UK’s Cryptoasset Task Force to Release Joint Review on Cryptocurrencies This Year
The United Kingdom’s newly-established ‘Cryptoassets Task Force’ will publish a joint cryptocurrency review later this year.

In Revealing its business plan for the 2018/2019 financial year, the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) outlined its policy thinking on cryptocurrencies adding that it would publish a review with the Treasury of the UK and the Bank of England (BoE).

The FCA noted that while cryptocurrency does not fall under its regulatory perimeter, some of the ways of which the assets are used bring them within their scrutiny, thereby “making the landscape complex”.

The FCA detailed in the report how they plan to approach the speed with which fintech innovation is driving change in markets:

“Our approach is to sustain a regulatory environment where consumers and firms can maximise the opportunities of competition, innovation and big data while reducing or mitigating the associated harms.”

Tim Draper: The Ban Enacted By RBI Is Stupid And It Would Lead To Loss Of Talent In India
Central bank of India announced last week that it prevented banks from doing business with entities that carried out cryptocurrencies. Tim Draper, a Billionaire who was an early investor in companies like Skype and Baidu was not happy with the Indian government taking a stance against Cryptocurrencies, opposed the decision, calling it a “big mistake.”

Draper had just returned to the Indian trade market after the country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, made a public vow to fight corruption.
According to Draper, India would benefit greatly from cryptocurrencies and in particular the underlying Blockchain technology. He says that cryptos would allow the government to be more transparent and accountable to the public at large, as well as improve efficiency over several levels.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) on Friday released a statement covering South African cryptocurrency tax laws. The statement obliges taxpayers to declare their cryptocurrency gains and losses as part of their capital gains tax as well as any income derived in cryptocurrency as income tax.

In the statement, SARS said:

“The onus is on taxpayers to declare all cryptocurrency-related taxable income in the tax year in which it is received or accrued. Failure to do so could result in interest and penalties.”

The agency explains that while cryptocurrencies are not regarded as a legal tender by the South African government, income accrued from cryptocurrency transactions can be taxed on revenue account under “gross income” as they are regarded as “assets of an intangible nature.”

OneGram Uses Gold-Backed Cryptocurrency To Woo Muslim Investors
OneGram, a local start-up company which was founded last year, is issuing a gold-backed cryptocurrency part of efforts to convince Muslims that investing in cryptocurrencies complies with their faith.
The growing interest in cryptocurrencies naturally extends into the Gulf and into Southeast Asia, the main centers of Islamic finance.

But because cryptocurrencies and technologies are associated with financial engineering, financial products and speculative objects, currencies do not fit particularly well with religion. This is because the principles of Sharia, in addition to not allowing the payment of interest, emphasize real economic activity based on physical assets, not on speculation.
