241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: U.S. Judge determines bitcoin is a currency on: August 08, 2013, 05:00:48 PM
Black's defines money as anything used as money, and currency as the subset of money that has been authorized by law.  The is different from conventional usage which holds the two terms to be synonyms, only weakly defined.

This could set a precedent in one federal district. That could also be appealed and may end being interpreted differently in different federal districts.

It will be important for a direct case challenging regulation to be brought when the feds finally decide to actually take one of the exchanges to court.
242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Banks Increasingly Difficult To Work With on: July 30, 2013, 02:17:30 AM
Looks like Internet Archive Federal Credit Union and Silicon Valley Bank may be the two possibles.
243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Banks Increasingly Difficult To Work With on: July 30, 2013, 01:20:32 AM
There's a credit union in Silicon Valley that I think does but I haven't used them.

Sounds cool, any further hint on the name?

Although I use CampBX for U.S. trades, I need to also be able to trade elsewhere also.
244  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / US Banks Increasingly Difficult To Work With on: July 29, 2013, 11:17:16 PM
Apparently the big U.S. bank chains (Wells Fargo, Chase, BOA, USBank) are becoming increasingly hostile to bit coin related transactions.

I just recently had a US Bank account closed due to international wires going to/from bitcoin exchanges. I've been shopping around with smaller local banks, who all also report that they can't do these, usually for vague reasons, like they are nervous about AML etc. They continue with these vague reasons even when I explain that it is all my money that I am dealing with!

Anyone having luck with a U.S. bank that will explicitly allow international wires to/from BTC exchanges?
245  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Recovering Bitpak private keys in wallet.dat on: July 29, 2013, 03:53:07 PM
Yes, I'm referring to the iPhone client progam call Bitpak.

It appears there is a wallet.dat file stored in the applications documents folder. I believe there was a way to back it up to DropBox or another cloud service as well, but it looks like the wallet itself was on the iPhone.
246  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Recovering Bitpak private keys in wallet.dat on: July 29, 2013, 02:58:10 AM
Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out what happened to the private keys which were used by the older iPhone bitpak client. I know this client is no longer supported, but I had a few BTC in its wallet prior to an iPhone upgrade and a change in main Mac laptop that was used to sync the iPhone with iTunes, and they don't seem to be showing up anymore, even after I let the bitpak client gather all the blocks.

In looking at the file system with iExplorer, I see there was a wallet.dat file in that applications documents folder. If I copy this and use it in Bitcoin-QT, I also see an empty wallet.

So this raises the question of when a file like this would have been backed up, and possibly over-written.

thanks,
Peter

248  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New coffee shop in Mesa, AZ : Gauging nearby bitcoin interest. on: July 22, 2013, 02:06:35 AM
Would you want to host the next Bitcoin meetup on August 7th at 7 PM?

We would need a space for perhaps 15 people and the ability to set up a screen and projector for some presentations.

cheers,
Peter
249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we reduce our reliance on MtGOX? on: July 04, 2013, 10:04:36 PM
Could you explain, in layman's terms, how such a system would work?  I have trouble picturing it.

In a sense, localbitcoins is decentralized, but it still relies on mtgox for price discovery.

I am also still trying to understand completely what that article is saying. I think the idea, however, is to use bitmessage for convey offers with their price.
250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we reduce our reliance on MtGOX? on: July 04, 2013, 05:33:30 PM
I suspect the use of a decentralized peer-to-peer exchange is likely the best long term solution.

251  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: New service for the bitcoin community (Bitcoin to cash with zero fees) on: July 04, 2013, 05:14:54 PM
Certainly this seems like a nice escrow service charging 2% to the buyer.

Unfortunately, the fact that the bitcoins need to be transferred to a wallet owned by a person or persons who are not clearly identified leads to substantial risk for both buyer and seller. There would be no way for either party to legally go after the owners of that wallet in the event the site simply goes down and the BTC are moved elsewhere.
252  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: New service for the bitcoin community on: July 04, 2013, 05:12:17 PM
site is not even a real company? can't find info on Mexbill Pay the organization who registered the domain according to these docs. also do real companies use yahoo addresses on their contact info? i'm just trying to prevent anyone from getting scammed until we know the legitimacy of your company.

Some additional research, the phone listed in the registration leads to a "number not in service" message. The address in Richmond, BC appears on google maps and corresponds to a house address visible in street view. WhitePages.ca lists 5 Daniel Browns in Richmond, BC, though none at this address.
253  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Arizona Interest on: July 03, 2013, 05:04:27 PM
OK, I'll be there. 3 PM on Friday at Cartel Coffee Labs in Tempe (225 W University Dr, Tempe AZ 85281).

I'll wear a purple shirt. Hope to see lots of other Bitcoiners from Phoenix metro there!
254  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the acronyms for Bitcoin amounts? on: July 03, 2013, 04:55:06 PM
Latest episode of letstalkbitcoin discussed this very issue.

Aside from the satoshi, mbit for a milli-bitcoin seems to be gaining some prominence. See http://www.em-bit.org.

255  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need expert advice ...Please advice... on: July 03, 2013, 04:52:40 PM
I will assume you are not just trolling and actually are a noob.

what does the best bid and best ask titles mean?
Best bid is the highest price someone will buy for. Best ask is the lowest price someone will sell for. Might be good to review basics of a stock market regarding this.

....also how come one website, mt gox, has a mtgoxUSD and a mtgoxEUR?..is that like what a bitcoing is worth in dollars(USD) and mtgox and what a bitcoing is worth in eurors in mtgox?....pleae help me understand this guys....thank you....

You are correct, the one site has a market for multiple currencies.

You're welcome.
256  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin is Dead on: July 03, 2013, 04:49:49 PM
So many times we here "the sky (or BTC price) is falling". Doesn't seem to have happened yet despite many incidents that have had a negative impact on the market.
257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wikimedia is irrational in not accepting Bitcoin payment on: July 03, 2013, 04:47:16 PM
Yes, there position is really irrational, and there was a thread on how it can be argued it really is contrary to their stated goals.

Probably best if people just keep hammering on them.
258  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Suing PayPal on: July 02, 2013, 04:23:33 PM

So it turns on PayPal's TOS vs common sense/public policy. Should PayPal be allowed to operate TOS that facilitate fraud?

It is hard to see exactly what the legal argument against PayPal would be. Their TOS are not illegal. The argument that they are aiding and abetting a fraud sounds interesting, but it seems like they have a good defense in claiming that the fact this type of fraud can occur is precisely the reason they don't allow the sale of BTC on Paypal.

Certainly there is a case against the the other party who received the BTC, if you can find them.

If proceeding with this suit, I hope you will follow up here. I'm very curious to see what happens with it.
259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Run 'Round FINCEN Rules. Bitcoin Exchanges without Registering on: July 02, 2013, 04:11:24 PM
Personally, I think the best interim solution is distributed exchanges and in-person exchanges. The best long-term solution is when one buys and sells other items with BTC directly, avoiding the need for exchanges.
260  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Arizona Interest on: July 01, 2013, 11:22:26 PM
I'm on for July 5th. Does the afternoon work at 3 PM? Cartel Coffee Lab sounds good.
