2401  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would a C1 survive without water cooling in a -1C cooled room ? on: December 14, 2014, 07:44:16 PM
Real tricky question...

You should specify, either celcius or farenheit, this is a 32 degree difference.

Think that -1 farenheit is about -30 celcius.

In both cases, it's not a good idea for a C1.

If the room could have a steady -1 (Celcius) then you would only need a small fan, considering -1 consistent.

Considering the miner is also alone, -1 celcius is not that cold.

I have an S4 in a open window bathroom in the middle of the winter the S4 got down to 33 celcius last night...

If it's -1 Farenheit then the miner is more at risk of actually freezing and lot worst problems.

Electronics naturally give off heat, the absence of cooling system in such cold weather will create a lot of condensation.

Cold environment turns to "computer sweat", then to sweat beads, real quick.

Ever seen rust on mobo's?  That's computer sweat settling in.

Water and electricity don't match; you'd need a dehumidifier running 24/7 but then you lose your cold temp since a dehu is a small heater.

Once this computer sweat is materialized and melted by the chip heat, turns to water.

This makes it at high risk of fire because water can cause serious short circuits.

Either way, you'd be better off with S3's since the C1 is designed to be liquid cooled, not cold temperature cooled.

What you want to add technically fan cooling to a liquid cooled system, both are 1000000% different built from one another.

Electronics are made to be ran hot to a certain degree but frost kills them.

Makes absolutely no sense to buy an already cool miner, with a liquid cooling system and put them in sub zero temperatures.

Overkilling on cold will break your fragile electronic components; the key to a cool mine is ventilation, not cooling.

Hope this helps.

PS: The C1 is not a beginner's machine, it requires a great deal of attention and know how to set up properly.  Sounds like you'd be better off with S4's since those machines would benefit from -1 temps at any rate.
2402  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer s1 Mx overclock on: December 14, 2014, 07:15:04 PM
Overpowering the miner is the last way to squeeze more coin out of those S1's.

Put on a PSU capable of more than 2x what is required.

The miner needs a 400Watt PSU, give it a minimum 800Watt PSU.

I only use 650W's on my S1's now and all of them are always over 210GH/s compared to 195GH/s with the ones on 550's.

Noticed when I put on a spare 750W non-modular PSU to an S1 and that one miner always had larger share yield numbers than the others.

If you already OC'ed via frequency, overpower is the last logical option.

Hope this helps.

Wow, Almost 100 views and no one knows how to answer this question... Wow

Sounds like you bricked it(you are screwed), you also have a massive red review..

Everyone assumes you are just stirring shit up.  Sounds like you know that losing power during a firmware update is bad news(it is for any Fing device) and you are just trying to stir up some trouble.

My thoughts exactly... but let's be the better bunch Smiley

--

That said, to OP...

Anything going wrong during a firmware update (why???) results 99% of the time in hardware damage, you need a new card.

Usually, Bitmain will tell you it's the LAST thing ANYONE should do, even pros don't get it right all the time.

I never did any firmware updates and never missed a second of mining; I like to plan a lot.

It's like losing power during a .NET install/update or if something goes bad during a system restore.

Your hashboards still work, probably... but you will need a new ethernet control card, which makes no sense to buy anything for S1's anymore.

Those suckers are around $50 a pop, you can get a new S1 at that price.

Good luck to ya  Cool

Send that miner to your decom pile and keep it for parts.
2404  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer C1 Setup [HD] on: December 14, 2014, 06:29:51 PM
Is the cooling kit stated in OP a step above from what Bitmain offers? Plus, when BitmainTech says 3.0M Head Pressure and 450L/h flow, how far above that can I go?
Edit: Is it ok to use a pair of 650w PSU's?  I guess one could power each card independently... however, I'm not 100% on that.

It is the syscooling / Bitmain kit. You can go as far above it as you want, but you'll just be wasting electricity and costing more with an expensive pump. Pair of PSUs is fine, just don't plug two into one PCB.

Much Thanks dogie Smiley

I was looking at a Swiftec pump kit, to at least, serve as replacement; it's slightly faster but with nearly twice the recommended head pressure.

Plus I read Swiftec makes a much more reliable pump and has better service than SysCooling.

Or I could even use the SysCooling pumps as backups, we'll see what happens if I bite the bullet and invest in a reliable pump.

If worse comes to worse, I can always put on stronger fans but those 28Nm from Bitmain are really cool to begin with.

At least now with your help (and others of course), I know where I'm heading and got a good plan of attack.

PS: I ordered a few bottles of IceDragon coolant... yes, it's shockingly expensive but the makers also claims you never need to replace it under normal use.  Every time I invested in NanoTech products, the purchase exceeded my expectations; we'll see what happens, I'll update once I got a few C1's up and running.  Right now, just re-writing my mining plan for adaptation to water cooling.
2405  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S3 one side getting too hot, reports 60c and fan @ 9000 RPM on: December 14, 2014, 02:13:28 AM
You too?

I have miners like that and been running for about 6 months now, just leave them be.

Many will say to do a firmware update but there are more horror stories than success stories with updating Bitmain S3 firmware.

I never did firmware updates, never overclocked and never had problems.

My advice is, don't fuss about it, you'll just make a minor problem a major one.  No pun intended...

PS: If you take off the cover and inspect the miner, you may notice on the top left, some of the C19 capacitors are missing.  This was to cutoff the annoying beeper that never annoyed me once, completely.  Circa Batch 3-5.  My B1's have no issues but beeps on startup, on HW errors and block finds.  My guess is it drove a lot of miners insane and the fast solution off-the-assembly line was to cut off capacitors. However, that threw off the fan speeds and unit temps on the interface.

I prefer my B1's over any other S3 I have.
2406  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer s3 red and green light stays on cannot log into miner on: December 14, 2014, 02:01:03 AM
Sell on eBay?  On a website?

"ALL SALES FINAL" or AS IS- Put that on your auctions or website.

I sell on eBay, precious metals and expensive assets, everything is as-is and no returns accepted.

Would you imagine refunding 10 ounces of Gold you'd never get to touch again? #PointMade

Anyone can take a broken miner out of their mine and claim you sent it to them.

Bad customers prey on your good-businessman nature and take advantage of that fact to get free stuff.

Who's to say the differ, you'd never tell, it's burnt, open the card lol

I wouldn't take it back especially if I stated that I didn't take return.

Even CC companies cannot go beyond another company's advertised return policies; just like they have to comply to return policies.

Sellers cannot sell burnt miners either, we know but this would be debatable and CC companies know of conniving measures to get free stuff.

If you offer returns, well, you're asking to give free stuff... sorry to say but you pay to learn.

Take it as a life lesson, you got screwed, just like many other have in this market.

I gave you all the knowledge to not get screwed again. "All sales final, no returns, as-is sale"

Fail to plan = plan to fail

I hope this serves as an example to other mining equipment sellers.

Most people are honest but lots of crooks out there; the one crook will take your profit from the other 100.
2407  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S3 login/boot error and hardware reset will not fix the issue, any ideas? on: December 14, 2014, 01:32:27 AM
You might not like the answer but might as well bite the bullet and get a new ethernet control card.

Just contact Bitmain and ask for an out of warranty ECB replacement; they'll send you a payment notice via email for the ecb.

This should solve your problem completely, you'd get a new one with the latest firmware on it.

They aren't cheap and no one should tamper with those; flashing firmware, if not done right will outright kill your hardware.

It's like installing a new version of .NET on a windows machine.. ever had a .NET install go sour?

Yeah....... your lucky your HDD don't get fried or suffer from an unrecoverable error.

Control card for an S3 is tough made but will set you back around $100...

If not, it's an RMA, I'd take the risk in getting just a control card instead of filling for an RMA...

An out of warranty card is maybe a 2-3 week ordeal at worst, compared to 3-8 months for an RMA... depending on holidays and how lucky you are.

Good luck.
2408  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer C1 Setup [HD] on: December 14, 2014, 12:53:19 AM
Few other questions if I may...  Roll Eyes

Is the cooling kit stated in OP a step above from what Bitmain offers?

I keep reading horror stories of epic proportions, about those SysCooling pumps failing left right and center.

Definitely something I want to avoid, being the low-quality hatin' bastard that I am.

There's a limit though...

I priced a custom kit and went up to near U$300... not really feasible on a per unit basis.

If I could get away with buying the cheaper kit, which is economical and then buying a more expensive pump, I'm still a step ahead.

However, I need to get a reasonable expectation of the quality of the rad/fan, fittings and brackets of said "upgraded cooling kit"...

Obviously I don't want to spend time buying and replacing pumps and/or rads; so, advice is greatly appreciated.

Plus, when BitmainTech says 3.0M Head Pressure and 450L/h flow, how far above that can I go?

Surely there's an overkill at some point, I'd like to know what the OK point is  Grin

Edit: Is it ok to use a pair of 650w PSU's?  I guess one could power each card independently... however, I'm not 100% on that.

2409  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER C1 Discussion and Support Thread on: December 13, 2014, 05:15:42 PM
I was in the same boat and was looking at other pumps incase this one leaked when it arrived.  It's been working fine so far, but this is the one I had my eye on incase:  http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14568/ex-pmp-171/Swiftech_MCP35X_12v_PWM_Controlled_Water_Pump_-_White.html?tl=g30c107s153 (1,000 L/H) with the optional 100 reservoir tank and heatsink, but it's a pricey alternate.

Yikes, 1,000L/h that nuts, overkill for one miner.

The one reviewer claims it gets very hot and heat sinks are sold for those pumps...

One step forward and one step left IMHO Undecided
2410  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER C1 Discussion and Support Thread on: December 13, 2014, 04:39:06 PM
Can someone recommend a good/better/reliable water pump for the C1??

I keep reading horror stories about those things going all the time, might be a better idea to get a better built pump.

I think I found one on Frozen CPU...

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/22869/ex-pmp-281/Alphacool_AGB-Eheim_600_Station_II_-_12V_15127.html?tl=g30c107s153

It looks solid and I believe Alphacool is one of the good ones.

You see, I'm good with both computers and cars but cooling systems, I always avoided... gives me headaches.

Would a 600L/h pump work on a system designed for 450L/h?

I like the idea of more flow but don't know if the system itself would take it... again, lack of knowledge on the matter.

Or, even better yet, is there a ready made upgraded cooling kit for the C1?

Lastly, is it possible to use a pair of 650W PSU instead of one big one?

Got lots of smaller 650W PSU's made by Corsair and SeaSonic, a high quality 1000W is a C$200 bill I don't really want right now.
2411  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: December 13, 2014, 04:09:05 PM
That said, I would, however, still want Bitmain OEM parts on my Bitmain AntMiners... :/

Mind what you ask for, else you'll get it!
I'd say not worth it getting bitmain parts (more relevant though not worth for bitmain!). They'll charge you a packet for shipping, as they'd rightly have to, and their prices are ridiculous to say the least.
A replacement S3 controller board, for example, is nothing short of $ 110 plus shipping (or you'll have to make an order for an S3 and they'll ship both together at no extra shipping cost).
At the end of the day, the parts bitmain use, aside from their custom chip, are OEM parts which you can get on the open market.

I told them many times I'd pay the ridiculous shipping or whatever, I don't care, plus I'm not too keen on buying any more of their HW...

BitCrane I think will be my next builder of choice but don't know their service quality either.

Bitmain customer service is just pathetic, took like a month to get a new S1 ECB (When they were in their prime)

I also resell my miners once they become viably non-feasible and not having all original parts cuts down the value drastically.

Even the S3 B1-B2's get a lesser value because of the un-muteable beeper, not even worth reselling; they'll make their way in my museum lol

I want the wire so I don't lose to much of a value, it costs me less to pay $35 for a new wire than lose $100 on the item's total value itself.

A spare's just a spare, it's not an original, those cost money, was my fuck up, I'll pay the price for my fuck up.

Most miners who buy used equipment want all original parts, even if replaced at some point.

Re-selling is a way to pay for my power and re-investments so I want to keep a good reputation and even one wire can screw everything up.

In a world where $500 is a good chunk of change for most, quality used goods = $$$ & repeat buyers and free WOM advertising.

IM NOT HAPPY BITMAIN

I returned an RMA board back to bitmain from a new batch of miners nearly 2 weeks ago, I keep sending bitmain the same details over and over and over and over again, and i keep getting the same generic response back asking for the details.

SO HERE FOR ALL TO SEE - HERE IS MY TRACKING NUMBER 6116164880 - It was sent with interlink express, and i have also spoke to the UK mail box and they have received it, he also told me it was in his hands but bitmain had not collected it.

Not happy as this is my first warranty repair to date, after ordering more than 30 S3 machines, 3 S2 machines, and one S4

So i don't understand what the issue is, why so many emails saying the same thing over and over and over again, getting fed up of asking now.

Please can anyone help me, or point me in the right direction, as this is the second time i have posted in this thread about it  Huh

It's Bitmain dude, either you suck it up for fuck off... they tell you using other words.

Hardware and price is great but service is probably the worst on the planet.

I been arguing for a week just to get a wire shipped to me, best of luck to ya.

Either buy and take their crap or go buy elsewhere... again, they tell you that using other words.

Welcome back to the cool clan!  Cool

To answer your question, today, it would take you 72.32 days to make 1 BTC without any power expenses, according to CoinWarz...

You also have to factor pool luck and if you pay fees.

Happy Hashing!
2413  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Miner for beginner on: December 12, 2014, 05:22:55 PM
Want to get started on the right foot?

Buy an AntMiner S1, why?  Here's why:

  • There were originally $6,000 a piece
  • They used to power over 25% of the network at some point
  • Most remaining miners had them and maybe even still use them
  • They're un-shrouded, it lets you see the miner's appearance
  • It's a lot more consistent than the S3
  • It resists shock a lot better than the S3
  • You can get them for less than $100 now
  • You will learn most about mining with the S1 than any other miner

Cons is the heat the produce if you live in a hot area and are power extensive.

Alternatively, I recommend a USB miner like U2 or anything from BitFury's decent.  They are cheap to buy and operate, and many even don't need a controller nor a PSU...
2414  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: December 11, 2014, 06:38:02 PM
A part on one of my S3's broke...

Well, didn't really break but let's say it does not do its intended job anymore.

I know, I tried its opposite side's wire and it's definitely the wire.

I know why, my own stupidity, don't ask but it happened  Roll Eyes

It's the one of the two, 2 x 10 pin ribbon wires that connects the hashboards to the control board.

The ones that are over/under, as in:

xxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxx

I don't have a spare and I cannot for the life of me find a website that sells this... I just don't know the fancy name, if there is ever one.

No sense putting a picture, I'm sure a "few" miners know what I'm talking about.

Anyone know where to get one in North-America, hassle free or does this need to be special ordered from Bitmain?

They're not very co-operative, all I want is an invoice, I'll pay it then they can ship it, after 3 back and forth emails, still no payment request.

When they reply they talk to me like I'm a computer n00b; been a client of theirs for over a year now and still buying hardware.

Can someone help me find the wire I need?  I'm sure I'm not the only guy who's had one of those wires go bad...

There's also people who know their shit a lot more than me =D

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Looks like the name of the part is SPI Ribbon Wire.

Have not opened the S3 to look at the cables yet, but this is what you describe:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pcs-2mm-Pitch-2x10-Pin-20-Pin-20-Wire-IDC-Flat-Ribbon-Cable-Length-15CM-/170932131535

Ha!  You fucking rock!!

This could work, yes, it looks like them, different colors but mining's not supposed to be pretty anyways  Grin

I'll look if I can get shorter ones but if all else fails, this is it right there.

It's that or go fuck myself I guess, eh? lol

Cheap price, free shipping, mind blown, day saved.  Those would perfect spares, if they do work.

That said, I would, however, still want Bitmain OEM parts on my Bitmain AntMiners... :/

If anything, I can always keep that elusive miner that makes it way in my "miner retirement" closet.

That's perfect, too bad I can't buy right there on eBay, I need that like yesterday, not in Mid January lol

I'll now be able to find a store near me to order a bunch and see what happens but at least now I have a target to hunt for.

Hey, I have a few questions.

I'd rather not import coolant, would it just be aluminum safe coolant?

Is not just a matter of aluminum safe. Automotive coolants are designed for, well, cars/trucks and the operating conditions their engines place on the coolant - and what the engines require from the coolant. In short, additives (generally silicates) are added which form a film on the cooling passages. Great for protecting an engine with large surfaces and cooling passages. Terrible for precision cooling needs.

Check koolance.com for CPU grade coolants or just search for 'CPU liquid cooling'. You'll find lots of suppliers.

Truth be told, the biggest thing CPU coolants provide aside from colors is algicides/antimicrobials to cut down on things wanting to grow in the nice warm coolant. If you keep an eye on it from time to time using either DI or distilled water is just fine assuming there is no copper or brass in the system.

Thanks!  even if I don't buy there, I'll know what to buy.  Sweet guide btw, will use it later once I get them.

2418  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: *** GHash.IO mining pool official page *** on: December 03, 2014, 02:34:40 PM
Why is this shocking to anyone?

GHash went from having around 70PH/s down to below 50PH/s...

Most pool operators would say it's a significant difference.

They had once near 50% the network and now only 13%

The big fish have all gone... to Discus Fish because of its daily, hassle free payouts and well, every wants to be part of the winning team.

So the bozos who mined GHash religiously saw DF overtake GH and followed suit.

Get ready to see 24 hour blocks by the end of the year.

2419  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: What pool do you mine with? on: December 03, 2014, 02:20:32 PM
GHash is a good base pool if you're a pro pool hopper but they been known to rip off miners.

You mine at GHash when the gettin's good and leave when luck is really bad... Bad luck at GHash is felt worst than any other pool.

Yesterday, two block in 17 hours... this would have never been thought of 3 months ago; I left after 7 hours, lucky for me.

The history of them ripping off miners is in this forum alone; I won't go in details but I been victim a few times.

They do, however, pay their mistakes but you hav to be on your guard mining there.

I mine there occasionally and when I need to as I have erratic internet and N clip is quick to load.

However, you'd be better off going into smaller pools and help distribute the hash rate.

Try out BitMinter, EclipseMC, Slush, Eligius and of course, BTC Guild.

The above pools have a proven track record greater than GHash and operators are pretty cool folks.

I currently mine BitMinter because my S4 requires a manual difficulty input; it gives me greater power than any other pool for my S4.

Hope this helps and welcome to the exciting world of mining cryptos Smiley
2420  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Best pools to mine with Antminer S4 on: December 03, 2014, 02:02:32 PM
With stock settings, you can pretty much mine any pool that allows you to manually input the difficulty settings.

Pools which I know have that feature are:

  • GHash.io
  • BTC Guild
  • BitMinter

I believe you can also do a hard input as adding your minimum difficulty at the end of your username in eligius and other pools but cannot confirm, I like sticking to easy-peasy; why complicate anything?  Right now, I am running on BitMinter.  The N clip is lengthy to load so I wouldn't recommend it if you have erratic internet or electricity.  However, my registered speed is higher at BitMinter than any other pool.
