It's actually a question that make me have to tell you and others a very personal reason in my real life. So at the moment I don't think that I should tell you what the reason is, if not for privacy I have requested a change of my username by creating a thread.  Wink

Gotcha

Additionaly, creating a new account would cost me a payment for IP address am I right ? So why would I do that if I already have an account that could access me free here. Also nothing would change my account is still a newbie. Creating a new one would just waste my time  Undecided

That's only if that IP address has "evil points" so to speak. You could try creating an alt to find out but if you're using your main without such issues, the same should apply to your second.
2462  Other / Meta / Re: Change name ? on: July 26, 2021, 02:34:52 PM
Previously I also sent a PM to theymos to change my username (more than 1 year ago) but until now he never replied to my PM and nothing has changed. I had reason to change my username, but it was never approved until now. I don't mind if theymos don't approve it for free although I still want it to this day.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the reason?
2463  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: That feeling having your first merit on Bitcointalk on: July 26, 2021, 02:32:04 PM
I tend to be rather dubious if I see the style of a decent post being distant from the usual type of posts made by the poster, or if the content bears complicated terms or expressions that are not common to come-across.

Of course one may be looking at a certain post, and not be remotely aware of what lies in the prior posts (or post to come for that matter). Eventually, you come to terms with the idea of giving a brief scrutiny to unknown profiles, knowing that somebody will eventually likely catch the cheaters out at some point.

I’ve only merited 6 (later to be) permanently banned users over the last 180 days, which is not bad considering (see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsendban). Can’t be too overzealous though …

Damnnn, our OG taking the lead Grin

Well, that's the problem with the newbies. While ranking up is easier for them, the same applies when it comes to (un)intentionally tripping the plagiarism flag.

Not to mention that they primarily try to grab some Merits, which they eventually leave should they fail.
2464  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: That feeling having your first merit on Bitcointalk on: July 26, 2021, 02:06:42 PM
<…>
Were it not for the fact that the OP is banned, probably for plagiarism as was stated here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1926895.msg57215380#msg57215380

Going from being overjoyed when receiving the first Merit, to being banned a few weeks later must be a bummer. "Pledging to create value" does conflict to a large extent with copying and pasting extracts, rather than trying to provide something more authentic (or at least adding the damn reference links ffs).

That's why now I'm skeptical of meriting newbies. A few weeks back, it happened to one guy that I merited; from Jr to Member. Within the next few hours, he blatantly plagiarized the contents of a crypto term page. *facepalm*
2465  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unintentional plagiarism on: July 26, 2021, 01:54:48 PM

There's one case that comes into my mind: people telling "I've read somewhere that <this> and <that>".
Is that (unintentional) plagiarism or not? Is the source important if only the general idea is passed?
I'd say that there's no general answer for this and it depends...

IMO, that doesn't fall under plagiarism because you did specify that the content was sourced elsewhere.

For instance, we can see the difference between "I read an article on CoinDesk that (this guy) claimed that Bitcoin will reach 0" versus blatantly copying a quote or source without citing any source.
2466  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A Simple Way To Check Legitimacy Of Crypto Projects on: July 26, 2021, 12:50:16 PM
That's true, that's why you follow people who you know are legit, it's unlikely for them to follow due to bounty or similar.

I have come across such follow X and Y campaigns on Twitter and Gleam, most of them are just singing the same tune; to the moon, best project, will reach $ in year.

Very prevalent with 99% of those "new" projects out there, regardless of legitimacy.

You sure that's allowed?
2468  Other / Meta / Re: Change name ? on: July 26, 2021, 12:07:12 PM
If your reason for wanting a name change is valid, you don't need to be a VIP or Donator to see it become a reality. I remember a case I think from 2019 or 2020. A guy registered an account and for his username he put an email address that contained his real name. That constitutes a valid reason a name change could be granted because you don't want your identity leaked or linked to a forum account. Especially for something as sensitive as crypto.

Agreed. I mean the process is reserved for special cases as previously mentioned, just that it becomes an annoyance when people start making such trivial requests, and it's pretty obvious scammers/ dupes would want to abuse this.
2469  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BlockFi on: July 26, 2021, 11:53:15 AM
I used to park my funds on BlockFi but their manual review process was annoying af because each deposit and withdraw had to be scrutinized before they get approved.

About the allegations though, it's more or less some scare tactics from the authorities just like how they are threatening XRP (Ripple). But still, it's better for the investors to move their funds elsewhere until the storm dies down.

Recently I remember there was a merit requirement (I think it was 500 or more) for changing your forum name but I don't know if they still grant those requests up until now though.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the post but I only knew this because there was a thread/list about users that changed their name.

I found one which was dated back in 2019. Depending on the circumstances of theymos' mood, a name change request could be granted provided you have a good reason.

Kinda cool theymos allowed a change in your name being as I thought that was reserved for VIPs or donators only.
From what I've seen, theymos sometimes grants wishes. It might be a name change, or a custom title. The more he recognizes your name, the better your odds are Smiley

I like to believe I'd qualify for a custom title if I ask, but right now it's like Schrödinger's cat: as long as I don't ask, I may or may not qualify Cheesy

I'm not agree with it creating accounts, could led us to be red tagged. Most of users here only create new accounts when they're main account get a red tag, especially scammers.

Alts are fine if you are using them for separate purposes, as isaac has mentioned.

Optimally, tag that alt account with a neutral trust. You can see this on LoyceV's alt account

This is also the first time I encountered such case.

This is the first time I have faced such a situation. How can anyone access my wallet? How can I transfer my token? I am shocked.

Some malicious code executed via the contract. You could check the recent news on Thorchain, a prime example.

What sick and twisted country do you live in that would punish someone to death for using bitcoin? I guess I shouldnt doubt that there are a few countries out there that would, which makes me sad that people have to live under such bullshit oppression.  I guess the same goes for jail time.  Hell China sends you to a "reform camp" cough prison camp cough if you don't simply conform to their religious ideals or god forbid two people of the same sex act upon their interest in one another.  Fucked up world that still needs a whole lot of work thats for sure.

These friends of mine weren't people who had vast knowledge of the internet and didn't know what a VPN was. In fact, VPN became popular in Nigeria because of the Twitter ban that happened in the country by the federal government not Nigeria a few months ago. Before then not so many people knew what a VPN meant.

That's the silver lining of the Streisand effect. Whenever the government plans to ban this and that, more people would find alternate ways to bypass them.

My pleas for them to continue and persevere didn't yield any results so I let them be.

In the end, it's the individuals choice on whether he/ she would want to try or not. You did your best. There would always be future opportunities waiting for you once you meet new people.
2476  Other / Meta / Re: How does evil fee makes sense? on: July 24, 2021, 04:24:53 PM

I think the decision to introduce an evil fee on this forum is wrong in many ways and I really hope theymos change that.
First of all, the basis for asking someone to pay an evil fee is the coincidence that some spammer used the same IP in the past.
Second, I don't think admins can punish someone in advance for something a new member didn't do and ask them to pay a fine.
Third, among the new members there are a lot of people who are new to crypto and don't know how to open a btc wallet, how to send someone a btc, they do not have bitcoin at all.
Last and most importantly, some new members will see the evil fee as the ultimate proof that crypto is a scam and will never return to the crypto.
This just happened to my two friends and I'm sincerely sorry that I even suggested them to register on this forum.
I will not repeat this mistake again and I don't intend to invite new friends to this forum until the rule on evil fee changes.
I'm sincerely sorry that theymos see no problem with the evil fee and the fact that many new and potential members have dropped out of this forum due to the rules of the evil fee, as most of them would not be spammers but responsible members of this forum.

You have a point. It does bring a bad impression experience-wise if I were to signup only to see that I have to "atone for someone else's sins"; it's akin to some paywall gone bad.

After all, IPs are dynamic and someone might be unfortunate enough to get assigned a bad one.

Don't feel bad, it's no ones fault here that they couldn't sign up.

It is better to log in first before contacting their live support because they need some tickets for your account also for the verification process. It's not good to entertain a nonuser of their platform so I think it's better to log in first.

One way or another, the user asking for help still has to provide some form of identification if it’s going to be account-related.

Funny that you're selling this at 5-figures for gamblers when they're already mired in debt. How would they fork out half a BTC like finding some chump change?
