Come on man, you know that this is bullshit as you've seen pretty much every outlet already come out and say that all of these accounts were hacked (Elon Musk, Apple, Coinbase, Binance, CashApp, Venmo, BARRACK OBAMA, etc) and that they all spread this same message. I'm assuming that what you wrote is obviously sarcasm at this point, but if it isn't then totally come on.

They couldn't get Trumps account because it is under some special sort of protection b/c of the fact that he is the President of the United States, while Biden is just a candidate (though like, former VP should mean something, and former President Obama should have the same thing)

No, the tweet cannot be attributed to Biden, however the retric of "vote for me and I will give you 'free' stuff" can be. This has been a consistent message on the part of Democrats for decades. This is how Obama was elected twice, and will likely play a large role in Biden's messaging.

To my knowledge, no elected/public offical's account was affected. According to Twitter, several employees were the subject of successful social engineering attacks and the attacker was able to use these employees' system access to gain control of certain users' accounts. My guess is that elected/public officials have additional/seperate security that other accounts do not have. Overall, this is very embarrassing for Twitter.

What jurisdiction is the forum under and under what circumstances could you be forced into providing information relating to a forum user? Like if you were living in the US and then a subpoena came by forcing you to provide the information, I'm not sure there is much way to avoid it.
I believe the forum owners and server(s) are located in the United States, and cannot avoid being subject to US jurisdiction.

If theymos were to travel internationally, he would be subject to that country's laws. I don't see Europe (or most other countries) subjecting theymos to their data laws if he were to go on vacation for a few weeks.

If the forum has any employees (or moderator 'volenteers') who live overseas, their governments could arrest the moderator and hold them hostage until theymos complies with their requests. I would consider this unlikely in western countries, however I cannot rule this out with regards to China. If the moderator of the Chinese local sub (or any other mod) is based in China, theymos should consider terminating the moderator relationship, or at least have a conversation with the moderator to make sure they are aware the forum has no intention of complying with requests for information on political enemies of the CCP.

The moderators should also be made aware of the above policy, and the risks associated with traveling to Hong Kong should be highlighted to the forum's moderators. The CCP has a history of "hostage diplomacy" as they arrested Canidian businessmen (on bogus charges) after Canada arrested a Huawei employee at the request of the US government.

Since this forum uses CloudFlare to prevent DDoS, i think OP's question also applies to CloudFlare as well.
CF appears to do business in China, and this should answer your question. They may not have collected information on specific users, but may start if the CCP requests they do so.

I believe google cloud services has a DDoS protection product, and google is unable to do business in China (and importantly, are not responding to requests for information from the HK government).

Someone who has criticized the CCP, or has worked towards bringing Democracy in Hong Kong may be subject to life in prison, or possible torture. This fact should be carefully considered before handing information over to the Hong Kong or Chinese government willingly, even if they are possibly guilty of other non-victimless crimes.

I have my doubts that most of America is going to want to vote for this type of extremism. These types of statements are going to make whoever is choosing Biden's VP to move away from Harris.

I continue to have my doubts that Trump will stay in the race. Heis doing especially poorly with his messaging, particularly regarding coronavirus. I am not sure if he was getting bad information, or what happened, but he should not have said that coronavirus was going to "just go away". His messaging regarding Faucci is only undermining his own credibility.

Republicans in general were caught flat footed in responding to the riots, and corresponding propaganda. There is an average of 3 police shootings per day, and it was just a matter of time before one was caught on video by a bystander who posted it to social media to go viral. I think Trump's biggest mistake of his presidency was not sending troops into MN to stop the riots before they spread throughout the country. This is basically what stopped similar riots from spreading in 2016 in NC, and in 2015 in MD, except republican governors moved quickly instead of federal troops.

I have received 11 fundraising emails from the Trump campaign over the past 24 hours, and close to a dozen text messages, all asking for campaign contributions. It is clear the Trump campaign is trying to increase contributions. They are well ahead in terms of cash in the bank, but have been lagging in terms of money coming in each month.

Biden has an eutheusiam problem. About 2/3 of his supporters want to vote against Trump as opposed to vote for him. The Democrat convention is also before the Republican convention, so Biden will have been nominated before the GOP candidate will have been nominated. This also means the Democrat convention will be full of speeches talking about "Orange man bad". I think if Trump is not ahead of Biden by the GOP convention, the GOP should nominate someone else, keeping their identity secret until the last minute, this will allow the GOP to catch the Democrats flat-footed in the propaganda war.

Coronavirus could either go poof or go into massive overdrive.

Quite predictably it's not going Trump's way at all now. The massive push for reopening is causing a massive spike of infections. He's now claiming that death count is low but it lags a few weeks behind the infection curve and is about to start going up so I don't get why he's trying to defy reality here. And now he started threatening schools if they don't reopen, which is tone deaf to say the least. Aside from some antiwaxer nutjobs, parents generally don't want their kids to get sick.
Keeping schools closed is much more harmful to kids than it is protecting them from the virus. Schools in Europe have reopened without flareups in schools, and many students were outright not participating in school activities when children were sent home in March. There have been studies that suggest students received "roughly 70% of learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year, and less than 50% in math" in the last school year.

In Los Angelos, the teachers union are demanding the Police be defunded, Medicare for all, higher taxes on the wealthy, a ban on new Charter schools (their competition) in order for their teachers to return to the classroom. This is all about the health and safety of the children, right?

The recent Twitter hack should benefit Trump and/or whoever the Republican candidate ends up being (and Republicans in general). The hack has damaged Twitter as a communications institution, and will have diminished its credibility. Twitter has been a tool to propigate left wing propaganda. The latest hack was very obvious to most, but it could happen again in a more subtle way that may cause more damage to Twitter. It appears Twitter put too much effort into making sure their codebase was "antiracist" and not enough effort into making sure it was secure.

Creepy Joe Biden just promised to "double" any money sent to his address.

This is basically the same scam Democrats pull every election "vote for me and I will give you 'free' stuff"

This is widespread. Many Twitter accounts have been hacked, and are promoting various scams.

The crypto accounts are the most obvious because they are posting various "giveaways" but I would not be surprised if other accounts are also getting hacked.

2469  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ghislaine Maxwell Arrested on: July 14, 2020, 01:47:54 PM
Would really have made sense if Maxwell (and Epstein) had dead mans switches to release all of this information if they were to go poof -- like Maxwell is to be soon, and we all already know the fate of Epstein.
I would find this unlikely because it would remove any leverage they have once they get arrested.

My guess is they had a fairly small number of high-level politicians in their pocket that could call in political favors to drop investigations, or reduce charges. DAs often work in relative secret, and oftentimes their investigations are not public until charges are brought.

The influences that Epstein had extended well beyond twenty years. It's only after the rise of the "me-too" movement that he was jailed and then murdered.
Epstein was not investigated (most recently) until the Miami Harold decided to investigate what happened well over a decade ago, in what I believe was an attempt to take down Alex Acosta, who was the Labor Secretary in the Trump administration. I don’t think they would have looked into the case if someone in the Trump administration was not involved in the original case. It was Acosta who was able to get a plea deal for Epstein to plea guilty and get a minor punishment, after state officials were about to drop the case. At the time, local officials were being investigated by Epstein and were receiving political pressure to not prosecute.
Quote
But twenty years? What politicians would those be? Clinton is one obvious one, but what others?

Who knows. I guess time will tell. Clinton lost a lot of influence after MeToo stared. As we have seen in the past few years, the FBI is influenced by the Democratic Party, and their interests. Epstein also appears to have operated largely in cities long controlled by Democrats. It is also possible that Epstein was able to remain free in part by getting politicians to stop investigations before they got underway and would receive any “tips” or complaints about Epstein, and stopped any investigations, somewhat similar to someone closing their eyes to not see any wrongdoing.

Bitcointalk.org is not subject to Hong Kong / China jurisdiction, so would not be required to produce data in any case. If some police wants data without a subpoena, they have to convince me that a serious non-victimless crime (eg. scamming) probably occurred. I certainly wouldn't help them if it looks like they're going after political enemies.
Most ideally, requests for information from China/Hong Kong would be ignored, but I suppose the procedure you describe is sufficiently close.

But if you're in Hong Kong or other dangerous places and you're worried about this, then you shouldn't trust anyone to protect you: not me, not anyone. Use Tor everywhere, and on bitcointalk.org practice the privacy-enhancing measures mentioned on the privacy page.
My understanding is the national security law bans calling for democracy in Hong Kong worldwide. This means being outside of Hong Kong will not protect you if you later travel to Hong Kong. I understand someone calling for democracy in Hong Kong while in the United States, Europe, Africa, or anywhere else would be subject to arrest if they later traveled to Hong Kong.

...

The key difference is the national guard was not called into Minnesota, but rather, a police station was abandoned, which made the situation worse. My guess is this was intentional.

Good points. For me, anytime it's a toss up between stupidity and intentional, I'll err on the side of stupidity, though.

I think it has been intentional. The number of people that were arrested while rioting being let off basically without consequence solidifies this argument.

Pinning Floyd's head to the ground (via pressure on his neck) may seem excessive[...]
Pinning his head to the ground can be rationally defended, it's what he did afterwards that is the problem.  For almost 7 minutes of Flloyd begging for his life followed by 3 minutes while he appeared unconscious or dead he kept his knee on his neck.

If they were alone together and struggling for a weapon a few feet away (like in the movies) or something, that would be different...but he knew Flloyd wasn't armed and he had his partner helping him with Flloyd while 2 more cops watched their back.
As mentioned above, Floyd first started saying that he could not breathe before he was on the ground. The transcript posted above also reflects that the officers responded to Floyd's claim that he cannot breathe, saying that Floyd was talking (implying they thought he was breathing while talking).

Also, as mentioned above, pinning Floyd to the ground, including his head was not a means to protect the officers from Floyd, it was a means to protect Floyd from himself. Keep in mind that Floyd had apparently just intentionally slammed his head against the glass in the police car, intentionally harming himself.

Since the forum is not implementing any kind of KYC or requesting any kind of personal information from its users I doubt that they would get anything from the admins here in the forum.
Email addresses and IP addresses used to access the forum can be used to find a person's IRL identity, especially if other companies are willing to provide the Chinese government information.
2474  Other / Meta / Re: Chinese National Security law on: July 13, 2020, 08:25:33 PM
My question is, how will the forum respond to requests for information from the governments of Hong Kong and/or China?
I expect the same as this:
I intend to ignore all stupidity coming out of the EUSSR.

Lets hope so.

However the situation is far more serious in HK than it is in Europe. Europe is threatening fines and regulations for non-compliance with stupid laws. China is threatening life in jail (and possible torture) for criticizing China or the CCP, or for calling for democracy in Hong Kong, in the name of “national security” which to an uninformed person, sounds like the person is doing something very harmful.
2475  Other / Meta / Chinese National Security law on: July 13, 2020, 07:27:26 PM
With the passage of the “National Security” law in China relating to Hong Kong, China appears to have passed a worldwide ban on calling for democracy in Hong Kong, with punishments as harsh as life in prison for violating the law. I understand violating the law, and subsequently traveling to Hong Kong may result in your arrest.

In response many tech companies have decided to stop Responding to government requests from the Hong Kong government/police. These companies are banned in China, and as such have no Chinese customers.

The law of course has nothing to do with National Security, but rather is intended to stifle dissent.

My question is, how will the forum respond to requests for information from the governments of Hong Kong and/or China?

There is always the risk of a state sponsored hack to obtain personal information of users. As such, precautions should always be taken if you are at risk of prosecution resulting from criticizing your government on the forum.
2476  Other / Meta / Re: What sensitive user data does Bitcointalk store? on: July 13, 2020, 07:08:13 PM
and if it would pass this data on to investigating authorities in case of inquiries?
Current policy is to release IPs only in response to a court order or a reasonable police request. (I don't guarantee that I won't release IPs in other cases, though.)
I however don't know if this includes any other information besides IP addresses.
The OP of that thread says it is outdated. I would suggest referring to the privacy page linked in the post above yours.
2477  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ghislaine Maxwell Arrested on: July 13, 2020, 03:44:51 AM
Ghislaine Maxwell once boasted she had video of two “high profile” US politicians, along with other powerful figures, having sex with underage girls, claims a former jewel thief who described the disgraced socialite as a nymphomaniac.
The source to this claim has credibility problems, but given how long Epstein (and Maxwell) were able to live freely, I would not be surprised if they both had incriminating evidence against politicians.

There have also been allegations they have spy connections to foreign governments, possibly Israel. To my knowledge, this is unsubstantiated.

If there are Democrat politicians charged over this, and there is evidence to support the charges, the underlying reason why "resistance" to Trump has been so strong.

I view the matter as likely a truly evil spiderweb set up to snare people, both innocent and other evil people. That's political-party-independnat, but if, say, Bill Clinton was involved, I'm willing to consider him an innocent victim of blackmail until proven otherwise.
Some of Epstein's victims have described what happened as having not giving anything resembling consent, even if you ignore the fact they were too young to consent at the time. This is absolutely, 100% indefensible for the times this happened. There are probably other cases in which the above was not the case.

I would also presume that most, if not all of Clinton's interactions with Epstein were after Epstein plead guilty to sex crimes relating to an underage prostitute, which would cut into the argument that he is an innocent victim of blackmail (he may still be a victim of blackmail, but he may have done something he knew to be illegal at the time).
The whole thing smelly fishy from the get go. "Hey, you want to take a ride on our private jet to an island with lots of young girls that well, you can pretty much have your pick of?" Anyone hearing that would wonder what the catch was.
It sounds like you are making an argument against what you were saying above.
2478  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Insure GUI - create a locked sweeping transaction for life insurance on: July 12, 2020, 11:39:23 PM
What alternative do you propose? Leave the private key encrypted with the heir PGP private key somewhere in the house, to be found when you die?
It is very difficult to leave coin to multiple heirs without relying on some kind of trust of someone.

For many people, you should have a single seed that can derive all your private keys that can spend all your coin. You should have your seed stored in a location (or locations) your heirs cannot easily access while you are alive but would be able to access upon your death (such as a safety deposit box), along with instructions as to what to do with the seed to access the coin.

If for some reason you need to have multiple seeds (such as one for what you spend with your phone while out, or one for cold storage), you can repeat the above process for each seed that controls any of your coin you wish to pass onto their heirs.
2479  Other / Meta / Re: Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 11:29:07 PM
A newbie (or anyone) scamming is not a reason to report a post, and posts reported as such will be marked as bad.
I have about 8 reports to prove otherwise and I'm not an avid reporter.
I don't know the details as to why these threads were deleted. My understanding is that scams are not moderated.
Quote
I might be supportive of the ability of certain users to be able to override the "lock" status of threads opened by low-level users, if the purpose is to warn about a possible scam, or high risk proposition.
This is another potential solution that might work too. Although it might also be abused and commenting on a topic might desuade a mod from deleting the topic (but I dunno).
There can be special rules put into place to allow for only certain content to be in these types of posts. These posts could also optionally be used as a stopgap before a moderator has a chance to review a report.

Another option could be to allow the option to make a report public before it is handled, maybe anonymously. This might only be an option under certain circumstances, based on the rank of the reporter, the number of accurate reports of the reporter, and the rank of the user being reported.

"New Transcripts Detail Last Moments for George Floyd"

https://int.nyt.com/data/documenthelper/7070-exhibit-final07072020/4b81216735f2203a08cb/optimized/full.pdf#page=1

<>
These transcripts from the body cams were just released. As you can tell from the text, it is abundantly clear George Floyd was having trouble breathing well before he was even on the ground. The autopsy results showed several types of contraband in his system, along with a COVID diagnosis. This seems to be clear evidence whatever disease he was suffering, it began well before he was even on the ground.

When I watched the video several weeks ago, I saw someone (Floyd) basically begging for his life, while a police officer (Chevron) has his knee on Floyd's neck, eventually killing Floyd (even though I had no knowledge of the possibility of choking someone via pressure on the *back* of a person's neck).

The fact that Floyd was saying that he couldn't breathe before he was on the ground, the fact that Floyd has > the amount of fentanyl in his blood that is considered an "overdose", the fact that Floyd intentionally hit his head on the glass in the police car, all change my view on the above.

Pinning Floyd's head to the ground (via pressure on his neck) may seem excessive, Floyd also just intentionally hit his head on glass, presumably with the intention of hurting himself and to avoid going directly to jail, and he may have intentionally smashed his head against the concrete if his head was not pinned down.

There was a police-involved shooting of an armed black man in late September 2016, just before the election, and riots started not long after. At the time, there was a lot of misinformation being spread by BLM, and the victim's family, saying that the victim was unarmed, and was holding a bible (both are lies). The governor quickly sent in the national guard and stopped the riots before the weekend (they started on a Tuesday), which removed any legitimacy to any riots that may have been organized elsewhere in the country, as happened in 2020.

The similarities between what happened in 2016 and what is happening now are striking. In both cases, riots started immediately after the victim had died, before there was any kind of investigation, let alone any kind of trial to hold those responsible accountable. In both cases, there was a lot of BLM propaganda being spread on social media that was outright lies, and misleading when not an outright lie.

The key difference is the national guard was not called into Minnesota, but rather, a police station was abandoned, which made the situation worse. My guess is this was intentional.
