2481  Economy / Economics / Re: How do you explain ETF to a 5 years old child? on: March 23, 2021, 06:34:41 PM
Do you mean nft? As in a token you can buy to own something on the blockchain?

There are nfts of artwork for example?

And etf is an old concept from stock trading.
2482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Biggest Bitcoin Whale Accounts Accumulating BTC, Says Crypto Analytics Firm on: March 23, 2021, 06:26:02 PM
They sell at high and buy at low just like any sane trader does! It's no wonder that they are following the same pattern now as well.

It does seem like it'd make sense to ignore btc for a whale and put their funds into stocks or something else if they pull out before a crash (profit is still profit). And it's probably less boring for them to have to hold btc through it being worth very little compared to what it was at...

We should not be confused about this, it is about how whales bought Bitcoin in February and the in first half of March. People should not get it confused with present time. I think more report on what caused the recent dump would be valid this time around.

The price was also a bit lower ($45k) in early March so some were probably trying to catch the crash.
2483  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Is now a GOOD or BAD time to invest? on: March 23, 2021, 10:24:39 AM
If I'd just come here now, I'd buy with what I can tbh. You should probably remember that buying will be risky and you can do a lot with a little - there's no need to overdo it.

If a crash comes with a similar severity as what we normally see, a crash to below $20k may be possible if we do drop from reaching $100k.

I normally like the idea of respecting a previous ath. I feel quite confident we could make it to $60k again where the ath was and we didn't seem overvalued by then and didn't have a dramatic crash.
2484  Other / Meta / Re: Unable to access my bitcointalk email on: March 22, 2021, 10:23:25 AM
Isn't this the one that's editable? Try going into your profile information and see if you can change it.

Itll send a link to your old email saying they can lock it if they need too but if you weren't hacked and just lost access then you should be able to change it without a problem.

Make sure you have a staked address though or some sort of ip relationship to your account.
2485  Other / Meta / Re: Question about 'lock topic' on: March 22, 2021, 05:10:49 AM
Yes they can!

I've gone through three pages of created threads to find one a mod locked and you can unlock them.
2486  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is the central bankers trojan horse out of fiat. on: March 22, 2021, 01:49:14 AM
Do governments really care about their currencies though?

Enough European ones are still busy trying to accept gold based coins as legal tender so I don't think they really care so much.

They're still likely to be able to say - if you don't pay tax you can just go to jail or we'll extradite you. And considering you'll probably either be buying groceries with your wallet or a tractor then they'll likely find you.
2487  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin is trash on: March 21, 2021, 10:33:45 PM
The main selling point for me with bitcoin was holding something that was deflationary. Cash held on a bank used to be because they'd pay you more in interest than the going inflation rate but now banks just seem to want to lend or charge people to put funds in there.

Banks here don't charge fees on transactions and debit and credit cards normally charge 0.3% or don't get accepted by many places. The same is probably going to be seen with cryptocurrency unless only large powers own them (like banks and governments).

You can find people that will accept crypto in exchange for goods such as land but you'll still need ID - I don't know why government supervision was deemed to you like it was going to go away if they didn't have banks anymore (you're still ruled by your government).
2488  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to become an escrow? on: March 20, 2021, 10:17:58 PM
Grow.

Become more established around here and then you'll be able to. It'll probably take a few years on this forum though based on its current standards.
2489  Economy / Economics / Re: How much can you make by saving and compounding on: March 20, 2021, 04:22:35 PM
Even for shorter periods of time, e.g. 10 years, you would really need to buy at a extreme market peak to loose money.

We are currently at a extreme market peak. Market peak that was never seen before.

It's not the first time we've actually seen this. It's known as a K shaped recovery as part of the economy recovers faster than the rest (typically the remote online stuff). We saw the same thing in 2006-2008.
Most of Europe has been getting 60%+ of their wages also over the past year and they'll have funds in the S&P500 (since its a global fund).

This might be a better chart to look at for visualisation of what's happening: https://www.macrotrends.net/2577/sp-500-pe-ratio-price-to-earnings-chart

(the paying people's wages in a downturn is generally what a government should try to do anyway and it hasn't cost them much - UK's was about half of its annual expenditure normally for 80% of wages to be covered).
2490  Other / Meta / Re: Bpip.org want to scam, and spamming on: March 19, 2021, 09:00:53 PM
probably

Probably isn't good ground for anything.

Scams aren't moderated and they have 13 tags.
It might be possible if vod has the bpip account to say it's impersonation.

But also, scams are generally unmoderated here.

That being said, the next industrial revolution is claimed to be decentralisation so the more work you can do on yourself and your own skills the better. There's a massive skills deficit in everything atm imo which is a bit of a shame (a lot of people chasing safe money is why jobs pay so low).
Are you referring to the Gig economy?

I'm not but that's likely going to be part of it.

There's a larger amount of companies that have been moving communications reams to places like India for example for a cheaper rate and this will continue to be done. I don't know if all or many of the larger companies will make it through this (and incurring the losses of waiting for the next quarter to find out if they've made a profit could become problematic).

There are moves to take a socialised approach to old initiatives which may win out of they manage to get enough people interested in using their services (they can still issue bonds instead of shares to raise capital).

There's also companies like uber and amazon doing more tradition gig economy stuff.
2492  Economy / Economics / Re: How much can you make by saving and compounding on: March 18, 2021, 07:54:10 PM
I feel the problem with dcaing might be that people get different amounts of disposable income throughout the year (eg holiday seasons). So it's tough for a lot to stick to a tight schedule.

I was investigating the march 2020 drop last year and the s&p500 went down to the price it was in January 2019 (which is a tiny drop to make the news)...

I saw a suggestion for people having children to save £5000 for each when they're born so that they'd have £1.5M when they retire (using a reasonable growth of 10% a year).

That 1.5M would then yield ~£20k a year in income adjusting for inflation of 2% (if you don't cash out the stocks and just mainly get your money from dividends at 4%).

Its funny. Recently I've seen few people talking about that a lot. Few youtube videos. Even whole youtube chanel focused on similar strategy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vffTJV0IzHM

Why its funny? Because we are currently during "bubble of everything". Not only bitcoin is mooning. Everything is. And now, when people like Michael Burry (Big short movie was based on his prediction of 2008 crash) is screaming to watch out - 'Big Short' investor Michael Burry says the stock market is 'dancing on a knife's edge' - and fears he's being ignored again YouTubers appeared out of nowhere, now, with approach that - market is super easy - just buy whatever and hodl. Why not 10 years ago? We have a record number of retail investors on the markets. Even high schools students have robinhood installed and gamble their savings. Its not good time for investing in the most overvalued stocks (SP500)

Some things in the stock market are weird atm and I'm not sure if governments have a plan to get out of them but with most of Europe being over leveraged in almost every way I can imagine they'll come up with a way to make it benefit them...

That being said, the next industrial revolution is claimed to be decentralisation so the more work you can do on yourself and your own skills the better. There's a massive skills deficit in everything atm imo which is a bit of a shame (a lot of people chasing safe money is why jobs pay so low).
2493  Economy / Economics / Re: US 10-year Treasury yield tops 1.7% on: March 18, 2021, 03:39:18 PM
It COULD mean the US are struggling to find investors though? I thought China sold quite a large amount of their bond holdings with the US gov (assuming that was the same thing).

1.7% is still generally break even. They might see demand at that price but I imagine people expect to do better with other investments (like private companies and cryptocurrencies) at this stage...

This probably only affects companies and country's that want to or need to use bonds as form of payment.
2494  Economy / Economics / Re: Has anyone been keeping up with the gamestop stuff? on: March 16, 2021, 06:52:03 PM
GME has been having some troubles with profits/revenue since a few years. As most people now buy their stuff online, their revenue is going down...
Um, yeah.  The only reason the stock is as high as it is is because it's being heavily manipulated, i.e., pumped.  The only way the company is going to survive is if it seriously revamps its business model, because as far as I can see, gaming is moving away from physical games and everything is moving toward the intangible and what will Game Stop be left with?

From what was being said at the time gamestop had a new chairman who was notable to eccomerce and bought quite a few stocks themselves (I don't know how accurate that is though)..
I put some trading profits into it (because it was a gamble). So the most I lose is half of the profit I made on one position last year.

I think it wasn't declared if they provided anything like a loss or a profit, but they did their best to make a profit from it but failed. The reality is that they started shorting since 3 dollars, which means even on the lowest point during this period they made a loss, so it is 100% guaranteed that they made a loss, however we do not know how much, it must be a lot of money considering how much they needed and how much they would have spent to pay those shorts.

I think it kinda shows how irrational and infantile one of the main traders of the markets are since they just kept shorting as it was going higher to recoup losses rather than moving on (although I don't know how accurate some of those reports were but I imagine it's something they'd do - hedge funds as a whole) .
2495  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How do we know if a Altcoin has been Pre-Mined? on: March 16, 2021, 02:51:42 PM
Most people used to say 1-5% premine was a reasonable amount for a developer to keep as compensation. Much more than that and I'd say it's starting to look a bit weird.

A lot of devs probably keep less and I think the ethereum premine was for the ico also? As they got $30M from it (I think).

As said above it can probably be seen in the source code or should be declared somewhere (tbh if the project is a scam the coin might go to zero anyway).
2496  Economy / Economics / Re: Brexit Losses Continue to Mount on: March 16, 2021, 02:40:33 PM
I'd be sad if it wasn't London taking the hit...

I'm sure the area of the country with $20tr+ investment capital will find a way to bounce back though.

It's probably more worrying that the government continues to undeffund education and healthcare - so we're going to end up with a lot worse in the future.
2497  Economy / Economics / Re: Has anyone been keeping up with the gamestop stuff? on: March 16, 2021, 02:34:23 PM
Interestingly, there was a report going around that some investigation found out that bots were found and used on the main subreddit that contributed to the whole hysteria. Not sure what to believe anymore. Legislators were really vocal about everything when the initial surge happened, but now everyone is really quiet about it for some odd reason.

There were claims of bots as hedge funds trying to push people to open positions on precious metals (it was a none event).

Many of the original moderators of the board seemed to be banned for about a week also but then got reinstated.

u/deapfuckingvalue was one of the original investors but it does kinda look like it's no longer being reported on by the press (so maybe something happened there internally)...

Not exactly related to GME but was wondering what you guys think of Publicly traded companies that are crypto-related like BTCS? I posted a thread about them but no one really answered so I'll ask somewhere else regarding your opinion on this. If you think about it, they should be a good investment as long as the crypto market is hot. I think we can compare it to Coinbase? These stocks have potential if we really look into them.

I'd be careful about investing in stuff like that.
Sure as a first wave thing it might not be a bad idea but I can imagine centralised corporations taking a hit as the space moves to become more decentralised.

In a week where a user reported attacks on binance's own defi platforms being subject to attack because (surprise, surprise) they weren't decentralised and had a single-point-of-failure...

I'd just be holding btc atm though and maybe a few alts - you might also do well looking at projects people haven't heard of yet though but only if they can actually produce what they promise.
2498  Economy / Economics / Has anyone been keeping up with the gamestop stuff? on: March 16, 2021, 01:14:45 AM
Tldr: do we have any info on the hedge funds reporting information?

I opened up my brokerage account a few days ago to find out my gme stocks had gone up by quite a bit again so I'm wondering if anyone had any info on whether the hedge funds declared anything loss/gain related since the original short squeeze (caused by the guy who bought $980k of a low liquidity stock and the reporting on reddit)?

Before now I thought they were trying to keep quiet and just pay a fine for late reporting.
2499  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Binance tasks? on: March 16, 2021, 01:11:17 AM
Also I did one a while ago and got credited for it so they do pay out. I think you have to go back into tasks and claim your voucher though (I thought it was random assignments though)?
2500  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Warning Warning Defi Users on: March 15, 2021, 03:56:38 PM
You posted this in the wrong place first off.

But also, why is this possible? Do they have another way of finding their websites, eg don't we have blockchain systems made to solve this problem - or even an onion failover.
