If BTC goes down drastically then altcoin will panic sell, just look at all bloody altcoin. I understand this is a market risk.

You should invest to the ethereum and wait a couple years  99% safety investment  If the newbie is given a longterm investment I doubt he will be patient. should both be done simultaneously short term and longterm. at least he will not be willing and feel the benefits. just a suggestion and that requires consideration. |

Need help on the process to actually get some Dash through Bittrex. It looks like I have to deposit a crypto I own, then sell it for Tether, then buy the Dash. Is there any way to avoid the Tether step or to buy with USD?

You can buy Dash directly with BTC at Bittrex, no need to buy Tether. https://bittrex.com/Market/Index?MarketName=BTC-DASHBUT ! I wouldn't recommend you to deposit any funds to Bittrex before you verify your account, otherwise they will block/disable your account.Or just stay away from Bittrex until they resolve their problems..I would go for the second option, if I were you.Well I am disappointed as happened to some other traders. i sold all mine .My golden rule if it any coin of my goes up by 50% SELL and move to something else .Might be a bad good move in the longterm but who knows .At least if i do that i always guarantee a profit so i am happy
