261  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 26, 2014, 01:03:39 AM

Product and Service Updates March 25, 2014
Our mission is to digitize all valuable hard assets into the Counterparty platform and to build a reputable service that can increase the value of all XCP holders.

BitcoinTangible Trust partners with Agora Commodities
We're pleased to share that BitcoinTangible Trust has opened a bulk-purchasing relationship with Agora Commodities for select gold and silver bars and coins. Customers of BitcoinTangible Trust, who wish to move into and out of gold in bulk, can do so quickly and without concern for losing premium on their gold or silver holdings. Agora Commodities has also agreed to help BitcoinTangible Trust deliver independent Proof of Custody for all BitcoinTangibleTrust purchases. Agora's CEO understands exactly what we are doing and has expressed enthusiasm to see us succeed and has given us permission to use Agora's logo on the BitcoinTangibleTrust website. We're excited to have Aogra as a digital custodian partner. We expect to add other gold and silver sales partners in the future. If you have a particular reseller you prefer, please PM us so we may establish a relationship with them.

BitcoinTangible Trust will offer BTC to Digital Silver
Through community feedback, we will lower the barrier for professionals to try Bitcoin Tangible Trust with as little financial risk as possible. We have removed our minimum order from 2BTC. We also now offer Silver for those interested in testing our platform with only minimums requested by Agora Commodities by weight. This means that if you have wish to purchase a few silver coins to test the platform, we will welcome your trial with us.

Thank you Counterparty Devs and the Counterparty Community,
Bitcoin Tangible Trust Team

This is very exciting!
I have done business with Agora and like their service very much. Their fees are extremely competitive, and they were one of the first (and still only one of four, I think) precious metals dealers to accept payment in cryptocurrencies (BTC and LTC). This looks like a perfect partnership, and I'm very excited about placing my first order. (I'm just waiting for BTC price to come out of the doldrums. Gold and silver are looking very cheap in dollar terms right now.)
262  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 25, 2014, 04:22:29 PM
One of the primary arguments against POS - that one doesn't need to spend/invest in order to earn money through fees - is also an argument against saving to earn interest.

Certainly there will be people who hoard in order to earn fees, but no entrepreneur will be satisfied with such low returns. They will spend/invest their money to develop useful products and services for the prospect of significantly greater returns than through collecting tolls. And other users will want to buy those products or services, since the product or service is worth more to them than the little income they earn from the POS transaction fees.

There will always be hoarders, as I say, but the hoarders provide ballast and stability to the currency. Most savers will use the currency because it only has value when it is spent to create or consume real-world products and services.

Eventually, they worked it out.

Benefits for Bitcoin users
Counterparty provides us (Bitcoins users) the ability issue shares, pay dividends and trade on a distributed exchange using BTC (without the need for XCP). This is a valuable functionality for all Bitcoin users and increases Bitcoin's value proposition. It is not in the best interest of Bitcoin users to shutdown this valuable functionality. Especially when there are competitors like - - Ethereum, Nxt, Protoshares, eMunie whom will have asset trading platforms built into their blockchain.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the Counterparty team is not interested in being a teamplayer and working with Bitcoin development, and giving Bitcoin no choice but to activate self-defences.
Please distinguish between Counterparty "team" members (there are only two developers) and the supporters, fans, and investors (the rest of us) who are certainly feeling frustrated and confused, and can't always make sense of what seem like arbitrary rules.
PhantomPhreak is one of the two listed, and has expressed that he is only willing to do things under certain Bitcoin-hostile terms.

We're not going to regress from relaying our transactions through the main Bitcoin network to relaying them, through central points of failure, directly to some subset of mining pools that have specifically whitelisted us with a patch. We won't depend on any feature not supported by vanilla Bitcoin Core, even if it means storing the message data in unprunable, (or even unspendable!) outputs for the time being.

You're asking them to do something that isn't trasmitted on the normal bitcoin infrastructure.  To this point the blockchain has been agnostic, so this is abnormal.  How is that statement bitcoin-hostile?

Exactly, mindtomatter.
PhantomPhreak is saying that he will NOT do something that depends on enlisting a small subset of mining pools, precisely because he wants to be a team player and build only on "vanilla Bitcoin Core."

It will not help move this dialogue forward if arguments and observations are personalized, and that is the case for people on all sides of this discussion. All of us want alternatives to the centralized, fiat currency systems that have profound social and economic consequences for all of us. If we can all just focus on solving the problem that we have, then we can help XCP, and, by extension, BTC, move toward achieving the social and political goals that are central to its founding and implementation.

...
...As to historical support, allow me to quote from someone who would know:

Quote
The network is robust in its unstructured simplicity. Nodes work all at once with little coordination. They do not need to be identified, since messages are not routed to any particular place and only need to be delivered on a best effort basis. Nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone. They vote with their CPU power, expressing their acceptance of valid blocks by working on extending them and rejecting invalid blocks by refusing to work on them. Any needed rules and incentives can be enforced with this consensus mechanism.

The thing is, Luke, that like it or not, Satoshi is/was a libertarian, and his creation embodied the 'take it or leave it' aspect of that political philosophy. Consensus means a consensus of mining power. Coordination means passing around proofs of work. If you feel that the amount of storage space the blockchain needs is too onerous to justify running your huge mining network, then by all means take your ball and go home, or for that matter start playing a different game - you have every right to reject whatever blocks you wish. Bitcoin will be just as pure as the majority of mining power wishes it to be.

Damn, that's brilliant. Where you been, "Newbie" topynate?

I agree with many of the recent comment here. This is a game only in name. It has the appearance of a game, but if people aren't actually playing, well, what is it? I also would like to see an attempt to limit or eliminate the bots. If I want to watch computers play games, I'll watch the algo-bots manipulate the stock market.

Assets name why can not start with "A"?

You might want to get a dictionary, or learn how to make a proper full sentence first before posting, thanks.

Don't be a provincial ass, Bellebite. (How's that for a complete, grammatically correct sentence?) Not everyone on this forum is a native English speaker, but their input is significant and valuable.
269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 21, 2014, 04:28:59 AM
I would like to bring a topic for discussion to get clarity in my mind with your help:
...
CITYGLUT once answered me that XCP is required- but again I am asking: to what extent? can we try to quantify/forecast the use and demand just like we would for a for profit company?
...
NXT- people didnt see a problem - and they see NXT as a store of value backing up the system. I dont see it simply because this ISN'T a company and no stocks are sold. it is a decentralized ecosystem and only the unit of excahange count for real ECONOMIC value (investment wise). the store of value is the platform and code but it cant be quantified financially without real transactions with a currency as mentioned.
...

Thank you, freedomfighter, for asking this question. I saw that you asked at least twice in the NXT forum and did not get an adequate reply. The devil is in the details, but so is the value proposition.

A helpful answer would include examples or a particular use case. Let's use BTT, since they are a live proposition. How will XCPs gain value (how and why will people want to acquire and hold XCPs) if they want to participate in BTT's services? Let's go step-by-step here and see how many times and in what ways a client or BTT has to actually touch XCPs.

EDIT: In 1998, when people were wondering how dotcoms would be worth their extraordinary valuations, the reply was usually "web traffic," "clicks," or something like this. The assumption was that the value of the dotcom had to do with how many users or visitors a website could count. "Just give away some service and once you have your customers locked into your business, then you can figure out how to get money out of them." The business model could come later, they said. For most, alas, that model never did.
270  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [QRK] Quark | cPoW | PC mining | Fast Distribution | Stability - on: March 18, 2014, 03:36:17 PM

I think we should do something more revolutionary: Build an own payment system in cooperation with the Top Ten cryptos. We shouldn´t think in isolated application, we´re not back in Bitcoin times. I think Quark´s doing great on its own but long term there will only be integrated solutions. Cryptos shouldn´t be all competetive, we´re here for a similar goal.

1. We gather a pack of commited members from crypto communities that are capable and creative to push this project.
2. We create a crypto foundation with representants from every coin in the board
3. We raise money from every community and get this thing blasting.

Imagine our thunderclap x 10. This is a chance to mark a difference between serious coins and the rest.

Can you dig it?

Why so quiet in here?

We don't think we'll be heard over the sound of the price continuing to crash.

[Marketing]

If you do want to do a use case on Bitcoin Tangible Trust, I think it would make sense to contact them for either a video interview (Skype, perhaps) or an email exchange interview. (Interviews provide great material, since, if you spend some time and forethought crafting great questions, you get the interviewee to provide compelling content and make your arguments for you.)

They recently contacted Counterparty via this thread and asked for our feedback on their services. They must have been in touch with the devs prior to this in order to implement XCP, don't you think? The point is, they seem very interested in having a productive dialogue with CP in order to develop their services and their business in general. It might benefit both CP and BTT to create a video advertisement together, parts of which we could each use. Like CP, they are young and inventive, and this is one of the demographics that CP can appeal to.

Edit: I would be happy to help develop these questions, and think through how this interview might work. I don't have programming expertise, so I am approaching this as an investor in both cryptocurrencies and precious metals.

[Competition]

Cryptocoin News has an article/interview on Mastercoin's distributed exchange. Does someone here want to respond to that article in the comments section? I don't have the technical expertise to discuss how CP is already live with some of the things MSC is planning, or how CoinJoin has implementation problems. We could at least talk about how CP is way ahead of them, having had a functioning dex for awhile now.
Here's the article: http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/2014/03/16/mastercoin-launches-distributed-exchange/

Regarding the content of the marketing initiative, I suggest a use case.
Instead of talking in detail about what Counterparty is, or describing somewhat abstractly the kinds of things Counterparty can do, talk specifically about the things that someone is already using Counterparty for. In this vein, we could talk about the new project from Bitcoin Tangible Trust.

Any use case type of explanation for Counterparty's virtues must describe how Counterparty is doing one or more things for the entrepreneur (in my example, BTT):
How does CP solve a problem that BTT had (or that companies like it have)?
How does CP allow BTT to reach more customers/improve customer experience?
How does CP allow BTT to speed up time to market/development time/etc?
Why is CP the best choice for companies like BTT?

In short, instead of talking so much about what CP is (like many informational videos do), talk about what it does for those who might be interested in using it. People will respond to something that solves some problem for them, or allows them to do something interesting and new. And investors will respond to CP when they see how CP can become a genuine partner with lots of entrepreneurs and adventurous thinkers out there.

Thanks!
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 15, 2014, 06:46:14 PM
I keep hearing people saying that this coin has a decentralized exchange. Why are people trying to get it on the major exchanges then? Also, aren't most of the coins in the hands of the initial investors? So one would have to purchase this at a really inflated rate to get their hands on some coin?

Its not running yet.You can try the test version.

Login to http://nxtra.org/nxt-client/  , using a pass you will remember. No problem if it is brief and not safe,as these nxt have no value.Tell me your ID in the top left corner, and i will send you some testnxt to try.

I would like some TestNxt please.

I promise to use it only for good.

279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 15, 2014, 06:32:53 AM

That is correct. However, there is no jurisdiction backing up his claim.

If a company doing an IPO on NXT isn't legally incorporated in a state or country, I'd stay the hell away from that investment.

Yep.

In many common law jurisdictions (perhaps civil law jurisdictions as well) "investors" in a common enterprise not carried on through a separate legal entity may be found to be partners in a general partnership and as such would be fully liable for the debts and liabilities of the partnership.

This, plus the fact that selling unregistered securities to the public is often prohibited, makes all these experiments very dangerous legally.

That seems to imply that any and all holders of NXT are "partners in a general partnership and as such would be fully liable for the debts and liabilities of the partnership," since we are all "'investors' in a common enterprise"...etc.

Is this a correct interpretation, cryptolawyer?

Is anyone else as excited for NEM as I am?
Note: I am quite excited.

My excitement level is "rather excited," which I think is one point below "quite excited."
