261  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: April 27, 2014, 04:35:23 AM
I think a fair starting price for each stake is between 0.2-0.5 BTC. The stakes for the waiting list guys will be 0.1 BTC, so a 0.2 BTC starting price seems fair to me.

But fairness doesn't seem to have a clear meaning in this situation.

Fairness relative to what, to buyers or to the devs and community who put a lot of hard work into this?

The call to participation was 1st phase to get in, waiting list is 2nd phase and auction is whole different matter.

With the auction we should aim to prepare for the market and set a real price for the stakes. The call for participation and auction should not be put together and compared because they are different things with different purpose.

Anyway, I would be very interested to hear Utopians view on this matter.

One question. If you auction 2 identical Macbook on Ebay at the same time, which one will yield higher price ? the one set up with a no reserve auction or the one set up with a 1000$ reserved auction ?

I have experimented with this... I get higher end prices for things I put up with no reserve.
Letting the market decide the price makes a statement.

anyone find it suspicious that there is someone with 134MH/s mining power mining on the crypto-coins pool.

4 cards with an average 500kh/s = 2MH, which means there someone out there with 268 (estimated) video cards mining this? How do you even power a system like that?
Most likely a multipool operator.
why does anyone make plain scrypt coins anymore, they are just going to be monopolized by big hashing farms and multipools to be dumped on the exchanges soon after.

All coins will be accounted for. No one(including me) will have an unfair amount of coins. I want this system to be UN-gamed and equal as possible.

So much for that.

It doesn't really matter too much. The way to get a seat and be a member (and get more coins than burning your pc mining the stuff) is 0.1btc.
There is still time, closes in a few hours.

Regarding it being a scrypt coin: this is the way it starts but once it is all up and running we can vote to change.

Hey,

New house member here. Looking for a link to windows qt wallet, haven't had any luck finding one that worked yet. Having a "house" mining system is a great idea.

Thanks in advance.

I wonder if a voting and messaging system could be built into the wallet.
It would be great if a 10%er could initiate a vote that pops up in your wallet with a timeframe and expiry date, you then cast your vote and the results are broadcast.

Another way: for every vote members get tokens that match their % of voting power, they then send it to the "yes" wallet or the "no" wallet. Whichever has more at the end of the poll wins.

The secret would be having some system that works effortlessly and is unhackable (like crytpo's!)

If we get a mining farm going another wallet innovation can be a live update of the farm's status and expected payout per share.

It would be relatively easy to set up.

That sounds like another great idea.

Apparently we are over 8BTC already now. It seems like we will have quite a few members and will be able to afford the miner and continue with BitOffer's idea.

I don't know why I find a cryptocurrency with a voting system so appealing.
It just feels filled with promise.
I also like the idea that the IPO acts as an investment with the money being used to create something (exactly what and how I guess we will vote on!)
267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HOC] ★ HouseofCoins | Community | Business | Power on: April 27, 2014, 01:37:48 AM
Voting #1 will be on a slow release of IPO distribution so it ensures nobody can dump and devalue the coin

I just paid for IPO sea and think the slow release i a very good idea. We all want the price to be stable.. Smiley

I paid yesterday #32 and will also vote to support slow release!

I think fast release might be difficult in any case. Depending on how much interest there is and how many emails BitOffer needs to go through.
268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HOC] ★ HouseofCoins | Community | Business | Power on: April 27, 2014, 12:57:15 AM
Is mining this coin now going to be a waste? Is the dev distributing all 10 million coins to people in the IPO based on percentage rather than fixed? If so, .1 BTC may get you a LOT more HOC than mining. Like 10000% more.

Still time to become a member!
In some ways I hope you get flooded with emails BitOffer, in other ways I think you will sigh with relief once the IPO closes.
269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: April 26, 2014, 06:59:01 AM
As a NEM stakeholder I want to see it succeed. It would be great if it was worth a lot too. I understand that starting the price in an auction high would in theory make everyone else richer, at least on paper. But that kind of tactic is price manipulation and would best benefit the first person that dumps. I'd rather the auction start at 0 or at least the price of the last stake holders fee and let the free market raise it up from there.

Maidsafe recently tinkered with the price of their mastercoins and have been heavily criticized for it. They were basically given away shares at off free market prices that maidsafe "fixed" and it left a lot of people turned off by maidsafe. I'd rather have NEM not start off with more enemies than need be.

Yep the numbers on MyMastercoins jump around a bit.

Seems that this sale will be done in the near future in any case.
What I am not sure of is if the 17000/btc includes the 40% early incentive that everyone so far is expecting.
If it doesn't then we might be over 43% already.

edit: hmm was replying to a post that has vanished now Undecided

you had a ridiculously weak passphrase. I accidentally opened it today as a mistake to test my client and saw your $10 received and sent out as $9, out of curiosity googled  the number and found this thread. Your password was definitely not superpowerful :)You paid almost nothing to learn a valuable lesson and hopefully you have a better password now.

Thanks for the update!
Is there another forum or venue where Curecoin is discussed more frequently?
276  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining and protein folding: coins for progress on: January 03, 2014, 02:09:22 AM
Curecoin is supposed to do this, though it has only been announced and not yet released.

Thanks Superdaan, I just read the curecoin announcement with a bit of disbelief (don't know how I missed that one). Seems I am not the first to have this idea at all! I'm slightly disappointed but also happy that there are people working on something like this already. I hope they get it right. It seems there are still some problems to iron out.
277  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining and protein folding: coins for progress on: January 03, 2014, 12:10:27 AM
Hi,

I don't know nearly enough about hashcash and bitcoin mining works and you ask an excellent question.
I have a feeling if someone has a good answer then they will also have a good idea of how it would be possible to implement a coin like this.
What I envisage (and it might be naive) is that the algorithms being used to solve protein folding at the moment could be adapted to have an inbuilt hashcash like function to validate computational effort spent on trying to determine a stable protein structure. Once a structure is "solved" this would be posted to the network and be part of the library.
So in my mind it would have 3 parts: the hopefully useful part of computation to solve protein structure, proven by published protein architecture of solved stable structures; the hashcash like part to verify and secure and prove work spent on solving (if the results themselves can not be used somehow); and the record of transactions which would make this system useful in transfer of units of wealth or worth and hence useful for trade.
278  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining and protein folding: coins for progress on: January 02, 2014, 11:27:57 PM
I agree, just translating the mining process as it is for Bitcoin into a system that does protein folding is a very simplified explanation about how it would have to work.
I expect the increased difficulty would happen after all the low hanging fruit (easily determined and already solved protein folds) are submitted. This would effectively look like a "pre-mine" and would have some of the same function but would also serve to start building up a library of proteins and to see how the system works.

To develop a system and coin like this would take someone very clever who knows both these systems well. Collaboration with the teams who are already involved with protein folding and its gamification (like Foldit) is also a good idea. I wish this was me, unfortunately it isn't but luckily there are people out there who are extremely intelligent (see Bitcoin) and maybe one of them will find this idea worthwhile.
279  Other / Beginners & Help / Mining and protein folding: coins for progress on: January 02, 2014, 11:00:47 PM
Hi,

Here is a quote from the wikipedia article regarding protein folding and Foldit:

"Protein structure prediction is important in several fields of science, including bioinformatics, molecular biology, and medicine. Successful identification of the structural configuration of natural proteins enables scientists to study and understand proteins better. This can lead toward the creation of novel proteins by design, advancements in the treatment of diseases, and the development of solutions for other real-world problems, such as invasive species, waste, and pollution.
The process by which living beings create the primary structure of proteins, protein biosynthesis, is reasonably well understood, as is the means by which proteins are encoded as DNA. Determining how the primary structure of a protein turns into a functioning three-dimensional structure—how the molecule "folds"—is more difficult; the general process is known, but protein structure prediction is computationally demanding."

Now we have a system that protects a protocol for transferring units of exchange i.e. bitcoins. As I understand it protects it by being computationally demanding and we now have chip circuits specifically built for this purpose and vast amounts of energy spent on performing these calculations.
Hopefully this will help drive the search for cheaper energy. It would be good if the computations themselves were a bit more useful (like Primecoin but actually useful).

I think a coin that gets "mined" by solving protein folding would be a perfect coin. Rewards can relate to complexity and stability of the structure. Solving natural protein combinations can be a built in test and potential initial distribution. Folding ("mining") could be by algorithm or by hand.
Solved protein architecture would be available through the block chain and effectively be open source.
When new folding solutions slow to a critical point POS based system of security could take over until the next level of complexity (for example interaction between different proteins according to their structure) is instituted.

This would not only revolutionize our system for communicating in terms of trade but it would also revolutionize medicine and manufacturing.

P.S. can I please start posting on the main forum

280  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cryptsy has listed Dogecoin on: December 19, 2013, 12:42:00 PM
To be honest it was the Doge that made me join Bitcoin forum.
I could not believe this is really happening and have conflicted feelings of joy clashing with disbelief. Dogecoin actually worth something?!
With a relatively easy way to be eventually traded into dogfood and frisbies!
That is awesome.
I got my doge his own account.
Now my cat is just feeling a little left out. Apparently sexcoin doesn't cut it as a substitute for her.
