I just don't get the people I know that leave their phones on while they sleep or can't be without them for fear of having a nervous breakdown. You really do see nothing but people walking about with their heads down playing with their phones and it has gotten so ridiculous that now there are repetitive strain injuries such as "text neck" from people's addictions to these things. My thoughts exactly. I find it utterly pathetic seeing people walking down the street holding their smartphones in front of their faces waiting for the next absolutely useless Twitter/WhatsApp/whateverApp message.

The internet of things: how your TV, car and toys could spy on youhttp://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/10/internet-of-things-surveillance-smart-tv-cars-toys<< Can your smart TV spy on you? Absolutely, says the US director of national intelligence. The ever-widening array of "smart" web-enabled devices pundits have dubbed the internet of things [IoT] is a welcome gift to intelligence officials and law enforcement, according to director James Clapper. "In the future, intelligence services might use the [internet of things] for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials", Clapper told the Senate in public testimony on Tuesday. As a category, the internet of things is useful to eavesdroppers both official and unofficial for a variety of reasons, the main one being the leakiness of the data. "One helpful feature for surveillance is that private sector IoT generally blabs a lot, routinely into some server, somewhere",said Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "That data blabbing can be insecure in the air, or obtained from storage". There are a wide variety of devices that can be used to listen in, and some compound devices (like cars) that have enough hardware to form a very effective surveillance suite all by themselves. There are, of course, legitimate and tightly warranted reasons for law enforcement surveillance, and there are also companies that take hard lines against turning their users over to the government. But hardware manufacturers often default to crummy security, or don't offer a choice, and consumers often make themselves more vulnerable than they should. >>

India deals blow to Facebook's Free Basics in net neutrality rowhttp://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/08/india-facebook-free-basics-net-neutrality-row<< India's telecom regulator has blocked Facebook's controversial Free Basics internet service by ruling in favour of "net neutrality" by outlawing differential pricing for data packages. Facebook has met a backlash in India from net neutrality advocates, who say that because the Free Basics mobile service only allows access to selected websites it violates the principle that the entire internet should be available to everyone on equal terms. While not ruling explicitly on net neutrality, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India decided not to allow what it called "discriminatory pricing" for different data platforms or content. The ruling suggests that Free Basics, which was aimed primarily at people in poor rural areas, will not be allowed to continue in its current form. "TRAI has today issued the 'Prohibition of Discriminatory Tariffs for Data Services Regulations, 2016' that disallow service providers to offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content being accessed by a consumer", Sudhir Gupta, TRAI secretary, said in a statement. "While formulating the regulations, the authority has largely been guided by the principles of net neutrality seeking to ensure that consumers get unhindered and non-discriminatory access to the internet", Gupta said. The policy may be reviewed every two years or sooner, TRAI said. Critics of Free Basics, which had been suspended temporarily while the regulator's consultation was ongoing, include many of India's leading technology entrepreneurs. India's 1.2 billion people make it a vitally important market for Facebook, which is still locked out of China, with the second biggest number of users outside of the United States. >>

Russian lawyer accuses unlikely animal chums of "gay propaganda"http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/05/russian-lawyers-accuse-unlikely-animal-chums-of-gay-propaganda<< Russian prosecutors have begun considering whether media coverage of the unexpected friendship between a male tiger and goat at a safari park in the country's far east counts as gay propaganda. Novosibirsk lawyer Alexei Krestyanov complained to the prosecutor general last month that information about the animals living together could harm children by provoking "interest in non-traditional sexual relations". "I think the positive coverage of this topic is nothing less than interference in the personal lives of minors, which is what hidden propaganda is, and public, active imposition of homosexuality", Krestyanov wrote. The prosecutor's office in the Primorsky region, which borders China and North Korea, has said it has begun checking Krestyanov's allegations. >>

Assange demands UK and Sweden lift arrest threat so he can leave Ecuadorian embassyhttp://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/05/assange-demands-uk-and-sweden-lift-arrest-threat-so-he-can-leave-ecuadorian-embassy<< Julian Assange will demand on Friday that Sweden and the UK lift any threat of arrest to allow him to walk free from Ecuador's embassy in London, after a United Nations panel found that his three-and-a-half year confinement at the embassy in London amounted to "arbitrary detention". Sweden's foreign ministry confirmed on Thursday that the UN panel, which will publish its findings on Friday, had decided in favour of the WikiLeaks founder and found that he was "arbitrarily detained". Assange has not set foot outside the cramped west London embassy building since June 2012, when he sought asylum from Ecuador in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden. The Australian is wanted for questioning over an allegation of rape dating to 2010, which he denies. The findings of the UN working group on arbitrary detention (UNWGAD) are not legally binding, but can be used to apply pressure on states in human rights cases. The British and Swedish governments were informed of the working group's conclusion on 22 January. Both indicated on Thursday that they do not accept its findings. >>

Julian Assange is in arbitrary detention, UN panel findshttp://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/04/julian-assange-wikileaks-arrest-friday-un-investigation<< A United Nations panel has decided that Julian Assange's three-and-a-half years in the Ecuadorian embassy amount to "arbitrary detention", the Guardian understands, leading his lawyers to call for the Swedish extradition request to be dropped immediately. Assange had appealed to the UN working group on arbitrary detention in 2014, arguing that he was illegally confined to the embassy because he risks arrest if he leaves. The WikiLeaks founder sought asylum from Ecuador in July 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations. The panel's findings were disclosed to the Swedish and British governments on 22 January, and will be published tomorrow. Assange's Swedish lawyer, Per Samuelson, said if the working group found in his favour, "there is only one solution for Marianne Ny [the Swedish prosecutor seeking Assange's extradition], and that is to immediately release him and drop the case". Samuelson added: "If he is regarded as detained, that means he has served his time, so I see no other option for Sweden but to close the case." Assange's lawyers also demanded assurances from the UK that he would not be arrested and subjected to potential extradition to the US, which he fears. >>

European Commission Targets "Bitcoin Anonymity" For Regulationhttp://www.tomshardware.com/news/european-commission-bitcoin-anonymity-regulation,31123.htmlThe European Commission published an "action plan" (pdf) for stricter regulations against methods that help terrorists get financed. The paper showed prepaid cards and Bitcoin as two payment methods that would be impacted by these regulations if they are approved by the European Parliament by June. In Bitcoin's case, the rules will force the verification of users whenever they want to convert their Bitcoins into real currencies. EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said: "We must cut off terrorists’ access to funds and enable authorities to better track financial flows to prevent devastating attacks such as those in Paris." However, in a post published by the European Union's own website two weeks ago, experts were warning MEPs that they shouldn't overstate the risk of Bitcoin, especially when cash is even more anonymous than Bitcoin: "In fact cash is likely to be a much more anonymous means of transferring value," said Sean Ennis, a senior economist from the OECD. "The ownership string for virtual currency is public and that allows a tremendous amount of analysis of transactions." This is backed by the EU's own law enforcement bodies such as Europol, who so far haven't found any reason to be worried about terrorists being funded through Bitcoin: "Despite third party reporting suggesting the use of anonymous currencies like Bitcoin by terrorists to finance their activities, this has not been confirmed by law enforcement." Bitcoin isn't anonymous by default, but it is pseudonymous. All transactions from a Bitcoin address are permanently logged into the Bitcoin blockchain, and anyone can see which addresses exchanged money. Source: Tom's Hardware
