It is possible to update the firmware and write your own if you wish, so it shouldn't be too hard to make it safe again if you know what you're doing.

Good luck finding a 2nd hand one to buy, very rare to find them for sale now.

This line from their webpage worries me more than dodgy key pairs:

If you wanted to load a Kialara you can, but not many do since the piece basically needs to be broken to redeem.
Not sure what you mean by "if overloaded are they swept". If you are asking if the creator of the piece will sweep any amount loaded above face value, no, that sure never happen. The private key to unlock the loaded coins should only be ever exist on the coin itself, usually under a hologram, they should not exist anywhere else and the creator/mint shouldn’t keep a copy at all,

There have been a few cards found with missing or even double-stamped "C" logo

I think i would prefer to have the MR4 Amethyst listed above i found on eBay for $150, might get cheaper if you offer, i don't know the seller
