261  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY: 10+BTC] Open Source (CC) Paper Wallet Kit for safe offline coin storage on: April 23, 2013, 04:50:03 AM
I would love to see some crowd designing, and collaborative work.

For what it's worth, I'm hoping and assuming that this has been the plan all along. I think the contest was a good motivation to get us hunkered down in front of our computers working on original designs. However, when the contest is over I don't imagine the point is to send the "winning" design to the printers -- rather I assume since this is an open and collaborative project that Aantonop will consider integrating elements from any of the designs (winning or not) to make something truly spectacular.

Everyone's been very generous with sharing ideas up until this point, I can't imagine why the collaboration would stop now.

Let me be explicit about my plans and goals on this issue:

I will be using one of the winning designs for the print job. Since I will be spending more than $2000 for this, I will pick a design that I think will sell. The voting helps me see which one is popular.

I will also ask ALL the designers, winning or not, to open source their designs. Any designs that are in fact open sourced will go on the repository, will be in the software and will be used part of the released OpenPaperWallet site. On the final site, there will be no mention of winners, that's entirely besides the point. I hope every design will be open sourced and included. I actually had budgeted mini-bounties for all the remaining designers, just as a thanks for the work, regardless of the votes.

The final result of this work will be an open site, a public github repository, and software which shows and prints any design that is submitted. I will continue to fund even more designs, so that in the end a user can pick from dozens.

If I can get enough support and sales of the initial print, I intend to produce multiple variations and sell those too, with designs from other designers. But since each design will cost a minimum of $1000 to print professionaly, I have to narrow it to one for start, and a few for later.

Hopefully, once we show success and a good-looking product, others will donate and support the creative efforts here and produce more amazing and beautiful designs that the entire bitcoin community can enjoy for free.

Thank you all for the support
262  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bitcoin book proposal ACCEPTED - Looking for co-authors on: April 22, 2013, 07:59:15 PM
I am preparing a proposal for John Wiley and Sons publishing company (publishers of the "for Dummies" series), for a "Bitcoin for Dummies" book.

UPDATE: Doing a more technical book instead for developers and integrators.

I am an experienced author and editor, have edited an O'Reilly book and written hundreds of articles and columns.

I am seeking co-authors, co-editors and general proposal-writing assistance to prepare a detailed proposal for the book.

There will be an immediate commitment of time to writing the proposal, with no guarantee of success. However, if the initial proposal is not successful, I intend to "shop around" with other publishers. The goal is to publish in less than 6 months.

If you have technical writing experience, have published a book, or are an editor, please contact me via PM

No keys will be pre-printed. I'm planning on getting the printer company to start work next week, and get the first samples. Then I can test on a variety of printers (inkjet, laser etc).

I'm going by Honolulu, to give max time. Seriously.  (UTC-10). So NY will be 5am Monday morning.

If you are working on the design and need a few hours, just holler, we're not going to cut off our nose to spite our face on this.

Cantor, yes me may have to make margin adjustments once we do the sample print with perforation die.

As for the public/private stub, that will be an option in the software. Perhaps a radio button: Public key, or second copy of private as human readable?

OpenBitcoinStore is re-launched, with a ton of improvements:

- No credit card needed for any of it
- No waiting, it's all automatic
- Fewer configuration steps, it's mostly pre-configured
- A wizard that makes it ridiculously easy - just 4 pieces of information: Store name, title, subtitle, email and password.
- The wizard deploys with one click in 18 seconds.

Instead of reading more stuff, you could have a store ready 30 seconds from now.

The new wizard: http://apply.openbtcshop.com:8080/

272  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Build hack-free online store and accept bitcoins directly into Electrum wallet on: April 22, 2013, 12:11:52 AM
This plugin can be installed directly into OpenBitcoinStore, now featuring one-click WP/Woo store deployment in 3 minutes.

The new form-based OpenBitcoinStore deployment, which create a fully integrated bitcoin-enable store, will be announced tomorrow morning. We are running tests today on IRC #openbitcoinstore (freenode).

Would it make sense to bundle this plugin in the deployment, so that people can easily use it as well as the existing BitPay (if they prefer?)

Cantor, those QR's on the stub do not conform with the template's layout.
I appreciate the superior design feature for the offset and rotation, but on consensus we went for the simpler layout.

Can you please submit a design that matches the agreed template and layout exactly?

274  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY: 10+BTC] Open Source (CC) Paper Wallet Kit for safe offline coin storage on: April 21, 2013, 03:25:20 PM
Just to clarify.

Designers have until late Sunday (any time zone) to submit new designs, add designs etc.

Voting is turned off, on purpose, until Monday. I will announce it publicly on Monday and turn on voting. Then we will have 3-4 days of voting.

Feel free to make adjustments or add comments. Comments that are "votes" and not really comments will be deleted for fairness, if submitted before Monday.

Thanks!

A quick update. 76 store applications, 6 launched before we froze the beta to deal with some bugs. We will be resuming store launches next week.

To solve the hosting issues and remove the need for store owners to verify with a credit card, I've decided to build a multi-tenant, multi-server load-balanced OpenBitcoinStore hosting option on AWS. We will be funding the hosting from donations, paid via a donor's credit card. The estimated cost will be approximately $2,500 for the first year. I am confident we can raise that from donations and willing to front it myself if I'm wrong.

This will allow us to continue to offer a free store to any store owner, without needing a credit card. We will be able to  scale through CDN, and load balancers to deliver the necessary performance, resiliency and availability.

We will be re-launching OpenBitcoinStore with a much simpler, faster, store signup process next week.

We have learnt a lot of lessons from the BETA and we can now apply those lessons to the next stage.

Many thanks for all the support.

  Hallo,
We hope, we are not too late Smiley Our design has microprint, bitcoin logo is pixelized, sacred fractal geometry in background.

No you are not too late, you have plenty of time until Sunday, (see policy above).

Please, post this on the voting page, not here.

Use hosting that you can pay for with bitcoin?

I think there are bitcoin-only hostings already somewhere.

If I can find a hosting company that supports bitcoin and is willing to offer a free basic hosting plan for the stores, then I will use them. If it is just a matter of paying by bitcoin versus fiat, and I'm taking all the risk and volatility for a community project personally, then I'd rather use USD and specifically AWS.

I imagine that out of 1000 bitcoin stores, 90% will get one order a month and little traffic (just the reality of retail "long tail"). So for a hosting company, the questions is: how to offer reliable FREE service to the 900 stores and then upsell the successful ones that emerge into supported and paid hosting plans.

There is a tremendous opportunity for a hosting company to partner (see http://openbitcoinstore.com/index.php/partners/).

Any specific ones in mind?

Our BETA has generated more than 75 applications for bitcoin stores in about 4 days. I have absolutely no doubt that the stated goal of "a thousand bitcoin stores" can be achieved by the end of the year, barring unforeseen changes in adoption.

We've proven there's demand for easy-to-setup instant stores. We've proven there is a huge community of retailers, wannabe retailers and volunteers willing to work together. Now, we need to overcome some of the initial problems and really take this to the next level.

PROBLEMS:

* We've found a bug that is causing the content to reset on Heroku. It may force us to reconsider our hosting options.
* All the free hosting options require a credit card for verification. That is a relic of "old economy"

Our plan BTC needs a Plan B for hosting (and C,D,E...)

I am asking for suggestions for hosting:

Where would you host 1000 stores based on WordPress?

Are there ANY decent free options that do not require a credit card for verification (both Heroku and AWS do require one).

I am considering a paid hosted option, funded by donations and hosting multiple virtual stores in a single instance server (multiple databases). This will cost about $100 a month, but we should be able to host a lot of low-traffic stores without problem. That would also make it faster to set them up.

Help? Comments? Thoughts?
