In fact, if the movie were remade today, The Graduate’s “One Word: Plastics” might be Bitcoin. As The People Making Real Money On Bitcoin, famously Facebooked Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss announced an SEC filing for the “Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust.” It would allow institutional investors to dabble in the virtual currency without having to buy it directly from a Bitcoin Exchange.

http://www.governing.com/blogs/view/gov-military-gang-software-bitcoin.html

The military is working with local law enforcement to develop software that will help track gang networks. Software known as the Organizational, Relationship and Contact Analyzer (ORCA) was initially developed and used in military operations to identify networks of insurgents, and is now being used domestically. The domestic tests are a way for the military to hone the software for future wartime applications. But in the meantime, they'll provide police gang units with a valuable free tool that could eventually see a more widespread deployment.

265  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-08-05 Why bitcoins are 60% more expensive in Argentina than the US on: August 06, 2013, 08:30:43 AM
http://www.coindesk.com/why-bitcoins-are-60-more-expensive-in-argentina-than-the-us/

Argentina has experienced turbulent economic times in the past, witnessing a period of severe hyperinflation in 1989, which saw prices rise almost daily and inflation increase to 96.5% in May in the city of Rosario. Unrest in the country culminated in a period of rioting and looting, with the government forced to declare a national state of emergency.
266  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-08-05 Amid epic woes, Bitcoin’s largest exchange rolls out faster hardware on: August 06, 2013, 07:40:10 AM
Things have gotten increasingly messy this year for Mt. Gox, Bitcoin's largest exchange. There was the whole currency crash in April followed quickly by a DDoS attack directed at the exchange. Next came the US government stepping in to seize Mt. Gox funds from Dwolla, a mobile payment service. And in late June as that investigation continued, Mt. Gox flat-out suspended US-based withdrawals as the volume of transactions continually overwhelmed the site.

267  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-08-04 Bitcoin exchange Mt.Gox reveals technical upgrades to boost performan on: August 05, 2013, 12:18:59 PM
http://gigaom.com/2013/08/05/bitcoin-exchange-mt-gox-reveals-technical-upgrades-to-boost-performance/

When it comes to buying and selling bitcoins, Tokyo-based Mt.Gox is still the biggest player. Even though it may have contributed to to April’s great Bitcoin crash, and other exchanges such as Bitstamp may be snapping at its heels, more than half of all trades by volume still take place through Mt.Gox – so it comes as good news for the burgeoning crypto-currency that the service is working hard to make itself more stable and reliable.

275  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-07-31 Is it Litecoin's time to shine? Investors flocking to Bitcoin on: August 01, 2013, 06:48:05 AM

Litecoin is a peer-to-peer Internet currency that enables instant payments to anyone in the world. It is based on the Bitcoin protocol but differs from Bitcoin in that it can be efficiently mined with consumer-grade hardware. Litecoin provides faster transaction confirmations (2.5 minutes on average) and uses a memory-hard, scrypt-based mining proof-of-work algorithm to target the regular computers and GPUs most people already have. The Litecoin network is scheduled to produce 84 million currency units.
276  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-07-30 Kickstarter pulls “Bitcoin: The Movie” project two weeks after launch on: July 31, 2013, 09:00:16 AM
http://www.coindesk.com/kickstarter-pulls-bitcoin-the-movie-project-two-weeks-after-launch/

The movie, which was to be a documentary on the socio-economic impact of the currency around the world, was raising its money using Kickstarter, the popular four-year-old crowdfunding site, based not far away from the movie team’s own New York office.

Andrew Wong, the entrepreneur behind the movie, launched the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter on July 16, and had scheduled the project to run until August 15, with a crowdfunding goal of $100,000. However, late last week, the crowdfunding site unexpectedly suspended the project. When Kickstarter pulled the plug, the movie had $15,896 pledged by 154 backers. Kickstarter works on an ‘all or nothing’ basis, meaning that money isn’t awarded unless the goal is met.

280  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-07-29 Don't Let Bitcoin Morph into Govcoin on: July 30, 2013, 07:09:36 AM
http://www.americanbanker.com/bankthink/do-not-let-bitcoin-morph-into-govcoin-1060955-1.html

Over-regulation tends to drive innovation to more lightly-regulated jurisdictions or underground where it thrives. And, this is even truer with the cryptographic bitcoin. Although not government's intention, a throttled and neutered bitcoin in the "official" economy would ultimately enhance its overall effectiveness via increased anonymizing measures and more robust decentralization.
