skip the 15.10, for me its not very ... finished, and the 16.04 LTS will come soon

True: go LTS for less maintenance and less issues (if you don't need to be on the edge).

I went with LTS. Mint update frequency is not nearly as high as Fedora (don't know about ubuntu)
but they do release critical updates promptly. I rfound Fedora annoying with their update
frequency, especially the kernel which requires a reboot.

So far i have nothing to complain about with Mint. All the software I use is available and the Mate
desktop is configurable just the way I like it, I prefer it over Cinnamon.

Well, mint is based on debian just as ubuntu and the two distributions have more than that in common.
On a side note, I was wondering if there is a noticeable difference in hashing speed when using different gcc versions like 4.8, 4.9 or 5.0.

More precisely mint is based on ubuntu which is based on debian, LMDE is based directly on debian.

Inconclusive on the performance. I'm gettting lower hashrates on cryptonight but it's not accross
all threads. Previously I would get 4 threads at a significantly higher speed than the other 4. Now
I get all 8 threads at the lower speed. Lost 30% performance. Doesn't look like a compiler issue.
Sent a PM to Wolf0 as his cryptonight is the only one with the two speed hashrates.

ccminer compiles and works fine. Real nice not to have to mess around getting the nvidia drivers working.
I've now retrofitted my older machine, just as easy. I continue to be impressed how well mint works out of
the box.

I know I'm starting to sound like a shill.

Back online after a nightmare. Good thing I had backups.

Bought a new build PC and the migration was a nightmare. The end result is Fedora is out, Mint is in.
No messing with blacklisting nouveau, one click to install Nvidia drivers and good to go. No messing with
repos to get useful packages, everything is already installed. And it comes with mate desktop.

The only advantage Fedora had was its handy services configuration gui, but that's gone now. so goodbye.

negativo17 has his repos for ALL nvidia and ALL cuda installs with a whole heap of other apps to be installed in fedora 23 as a simple dnf call ...

its the repo i use ... amongst a couple of others ...

mint is nice as a basic os - and i guess in the environment you are working with - that could be a good thing ...

fedora 24 is destined to be a much more streamlined os - at least thats their intention ... released in a few months ...

pity it was a nightmare for you mate ... but glad you got it all running well with the new os and desktop ...

#crysx

I found the negativo repos but passed them over. I was constantly taking steps back. I never could get
fedora to work. I got centos working the first time but performance was poor. I reinstalled and couldn't
login with a desktop after installing the nvidia drivers. The next time the Nvidia driver install failed...
And along the way i nuked the system partition on my current system trying to write a USB image.
I'm sure i said sdd, not sdb.

Fortunately after restoring the home dir from backups everything was as it was, phew.

I had been eying mint for a long time because I liked it much better than Ubuntu. It's a better Ubuntu
with a better attitude, no forcing new desktops on users. Like I said th eonly thing that kept me from
switching earlier was the services config gui.

Now my other PCs get the trickle down effect and at some point will be another mining rig, just in time
for Pascal.

I've noticed some of the lesser known algos are having some problems since v3.1.

If any users find problems with algos that are listed as supported please report and
retest with v3.0.7.

Checking in: I tested v3.1 & 3.1.1 on 4 different rigs, some still using 3.0.2 others was using 3.07.
I'm seeing a great deal more rejects with v3.1/.1 on x11 and is the only algo I've tested.
I'm back on the older versions for now, will test newer release as soon as I can find some time.
3.02/3.0.7 only maybe 10 rejects out of 100,000 3.1/.1 somewhere between 8 to 20% rejects.

Oh & hash was just a tad lower than v3.02/.07 on x11.

Thanks for testing.

This is SSE2 right?

I have noticed some rejects at startup somretimes but then things settle down. Do the rejects affects the
hash rate at the pool?

Things are settling down a bit so I will do a thorough performance test to find the best release.
There are also some regressions that need to be fixed.

My availability will be limited as I just bought a new PC and having problems with it.
2706  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining on old PC? on: February 12, 2016, 05:49:14 AM
Mining with a normal desktop pc is far away from recommended. The calculating will destroy your pc running a faucetrotator will be more profitable.
Let me guess, and you have just the one you want to recommend right...

Nonsense.

Your hardware will be fine as long as you keep it properly cooled and don't force it to run outside of it's recommended specs, ie overclocking/over volting it into scrap.  Heat kills electronics so don't run stuff too hot and it will last a long time.

For CPU mining on a core2 quad use cpuminer-opt

You can GPU mine with  a cuda enabled GPU such as a 750ti
2707  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: trying to build a "cheap" mining rig!! newbie here!! on: February 10, 2016, 06:14:12 PM
Okay, thanks for the advise so far! I see I have alot to learn about the technology yet. I'm very new to cryptocurrencies and I really see it as being something that by jumping on now could be worth it in the future.

One other question, is gpu mining going to be around for a while? I know with bitcoin and some other cryptos Asic miners get built and take over the gpu's, but are some cryptos being made like ethereum to help the lone gpu miner?!

GPU mining should be around for a long time. The alt algos are designed to make it more difficult to
build an asic. There are many different algos and each one needs ts own asic to mine. And finally
there has to be enough demand for it to be profatible.

The Ethereum mining will last about 10 months. If we cannot make ROI in 10 months, we should not buy more GPU.

Do you know any other coins have the similar potential?

You only need 40 days. A r9 280 is making $3.5 a day...

So you think the price will not drop in 40 days or the difficulty will not catch up in the period?

Don't think in such short terms, especially if you're buying new equipment.
When ETH melts there will be another  coin to mine.

Hi. This is my 1st post in this section.
I just wanted to ask that can i mine any coin with laptop? if yes, then what would be the most profitable to be mined with a cpu?
Any helpful replies will be appreciated.

Maybe you should read some previous threads before asking questions.
This is one of the most frequently asked, which you would have known if you
had done any research.

Sorry, but i can't read all the threads in this section, they are too many, and i have looked for a similar topic like mine but i didn't get the answer i'm looking for, so that's why i thought of starting a new topic and asking my question so i may get some good answers.

You didn't look very hard. I took me less than a minute to find this.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1328733.0

I think you're just being lazy. And if you didn't get the answer you were loking for why would you think
asking the same question again would give you a different answer?

Hey all, I am wanting to build a gpu mining rig with an old pc I'm going to pick up. It's more for a little project and maybe some profitability down the road...one issue,

I don't really know what video card, mother board, power box ect.. I would need. Help me out?!

As well, what would be a good coin to mine? I was thinking ethereum while it's on pow and it would be cool to download te block chain but what else is there to look in to? I'm going to be doing my research but welcome all and any advise!!

From the cheapest...

- If you want to go super cheap use what you already have. You can mine with any 64 bit CPU.

- If the PC already has a GPU you may be able to use it.

- You can buy a GPU that fits the existing power supply

- buy a new GPU and PSU to match it

etc

Very interesting thread and progress.
I have a Haswell and Ivy Linux and Windows available if ya need me to test anything.

Can't do windows yet, buty if you can do linux...

cpuminer-opt v3.1.3 contains fixes for vanilla. It compiles and
works in benchmark mode.  Not tested on a live pool. YMMV.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0lVSGQYLJIZNTFic1ZwVHVVUE0/view?usp=sharing

Tested working at 33.8 MH/s on 4790K.

There is a swerr message displayed that can be ignored. It will be fixed in the next release.

I wrote too soon. After two accepts nothing but rejects.

Vanilla coin needs a specific algo gate.

Ahah, I see a sublte difference. Just a minor tweak to the blakecoin gate function should do it.

Any links to a windows binary for this?  Just got a new i7 4790K and I wanna burn it in real good.

Sorry no windows yet.

2718  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] ccminer 1.7 with SM2.1 compatibility - opensource (tpruvot) on: February 07, 2016, 06:08:14 PM
I already answered
Yes, thank you for your input. However, there is no information in the readme file regarding g++ or Fedora. I build clean every time using build.sh. I have already tried compiling with g++-5.2.1 / CUDA 7.5.18. That's where this all began. I have also seemingly compiled successfully against the repo version of CUDA 6.5 / gcc-4.9 but got an error no nVidia driver installed when I tried to run ccminer. I have one more combination to try before throwing in the towel - Install CUDA 6.5 from the .run file (these always seem to give me the highest success rates) and try compiling with the various gcc versions to see if I can find a combination that works.

My experience is with Fedora so YMMV.

It seems the compiler in ubuntu is not compatible with ccminer. In most cases where a distro
introduces incompatible changes (assuming they are aware) they will also keep the old
compatible version available.

Regarding cuda and driver installation that can be confusing. Quite often when you install cuda
from the repo it will install the repo drivers as well, which may be older. I like to install both
from the nvidia run files to avoid this.

Now, you say you compiled successfully at first but ccminer failed to start because of no driver.
This smells like a nouveau problem. When you installed cuda from the repo you may have
blown away the nvidia proprietary drivers and replaced them with nouveau. I agree you should
try backing out the repo packages then install cuda and the drivers from the run files.
2719  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]: cpuminer-opt, the optimized multi-algo CPU miner on: February 07, 2016, 04:55:13 PM
This is my build command:
Code:
./autogen.sh
make clean
./configure CFLAGS="-march=native -Ofast" CXXFLAGS=$CFLAGS --with-crypto --with-curl
make
and
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep model
model name      : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570S CPU @ 2.90GHz

I tried both of these pools:
neoscrypt.eu.nicehash.com:3341
hashpower.co:4233

It works for me. what can I do?
2720  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]: cpuminer-opt, the optimized multi-algo CPU miner on: February 07, 2016, 04:10:18 PM
Hi joblo,
Thanks for your continuing efforts with the miner.

It seems like neosrypt mining is broken.  The 3.1 version core dumps
with -a neoscrypt.

Code:
  4020 Segmentation fault      (core dumped) cpuminer -t 1 -a neoscrypt  --api-bind 127.0.0.1:4044 $SITE1

I tried to recompile the code with -g switch so I could have gdb locate where it crashes.
But with -g the compile fails as well (This is on an i5 Haswell with Ubuntu 14.04.3):

Code:
gcc -std=gnu99 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.  -Iyes/include -Iyes/include -fno-strict-aliasing  -I. -Iyes/include -Iyes/include -Wno-pointer-sign -Wno-pointer-to-int-cast   -march=native -g  -Iyes/include -Iyes/include -MT algo/groestl/sse2/cpuminer-grso-asm.o -MD -MP -MF algo/groestl/sse2/.deps/cpuminer-grso-asm.Tpo -c -o algo/groestl/sse2/cpuminer-grso-asm.o `test -f 'algo/groestl/sse2/grso-asm.c' || echo './'`algo/groestl/sse2/grso-asm.c
algo/groestl/sse2/grso-asm.c: In function ‘grsoP1024ASM’:
algo/groestl/sse2/grso-asm.c:6:3: error: ‘asm’ operand has impossible constraints
   asm (
   ^
make[2]: *** [algo/groestl/sse2/cpuminer-grso-asm.o] Error 1

EDIT: I managed to eke out a location where it apparently crashes without -g'ing an executable:
 0x00000000004be530 in absorbBlockBlake2Safe ()

It looks like you are compileing for SSE2 but a Haswell has AES_NI. This should still work though,
but slower.

Either way I retested neoscrypt with both AES_NI and SSE2 in v3.1.

Edit: I tested on a pool, it looks like you're mining solo.

Edit: Upon further thought the compikle may have been coreect but it looks like GDB couldn't handle
some of the SSE2 code

If the problems only occur solo it looks like a wallet/solo mining issue.
