281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got .5 BTC out of nowhere? on: August 14, 2013, 03:40:27 PM
If I was you, I'd withdraw it.

I will. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I would like to know how this happened, however. Bitcoins shouldn't be popping out of nowhere.
282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All kinds of stuff for sale with BTC. we need to be careful on: August 14, 2013, 03:39:04 PM

You can buy meth and heroin off of SR. Who cares if some 11 year old gets drunk. He can go through his parents' liquor cabinet for that anyways.

And at this current time, drugs and gambling make up the bulk of the bitcoin economy, so blocking vices does more harm than good...

Whilst I agree with the first part, but I think you underestimate the number of people using bitcoin in legally accepted ways.

Pulling numbers out of...you know / wink /wink

Silk Road has 1.22 million pounds (as in currency) worth of purchases made every month. That's 14.64 million a year.
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-02/01/silk-road-crackdown (Note that this article is not purely about SR's revenue)

The bitcoin economy is worth 822,435,072 pounds total (Bitcoin Watch).

That means that SR in one year, which is one website, is worth 1.8% of the entire bitcoin economy (and that article refers to a 2012 study when bitcoins were lower). When the figures come up for this year, I'm sure that SR will take up a much larger portion.

And of course, SR is not the only illegal site using bitcoins.

And keep in mind that there are legal sites too. Bitcoins are used to buy alcohol and tobacco, and there's gambling.

283  Economy / Lending / Re: 5 BTC Loan Needed on: August 14, 2013, 03:03:50 PM
Well I suppose this is a fail..

Sad

Why not just sell the piece? I'm sure that you could get the 5 BTC that way. And since you're trying to start a store, wouldn't it make sense to build up capital by selling things?
284  Economy / Lending / Re: .11 btc loan on: August 14, 2013, 02:58:50 PM
Odd.

The .11 BTC loan was never spent on anything.

https://blockchain.info/address/15Me5ycNPyQnhcmwckDBai9e9MwmFANBPH

 Huh
Good catch. Looks like a rep loan.

Possibly between socks? Both of the users are new low post count and did the loan with no questions asked.
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I think I fucked up... sent 2btc to wrong address.. help?! on: August 14, 2013, 02:48:30 PM
I doubt someone would bother hacking an empty SR account. How could they possibly know you were going to make a deposit? It's more likely that you accidently requested a new address, and since you haven't made a deposit to that account it brought up the "Are you ready?" thing. I made a new account on there (used to use my friends) and it did the same thing, although I didn't send any BTC to the first address.

Also, it's probably not a good idea to have your SR address in your sig. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of anonymity on SR.
286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All kinds of stuff for sale with BTC. we need to be careful on: August 14, 2013, 02:27:58 PM

So no doubt each country has a laundry list of things that are a no no to have. I've noticed as of late lots of booze and contraband being sold around the "surface web".; ofcourse I figure some of these are straight up bait.  Where as others are straight up fuck the man style listings.

When the party favor market was strictly tor based.  One could argue it wasn't easy to buy. At the moment there are atleast a dozen listings alone on bitmit that are regularly controled by the US goverment.  I understand that to block, censor or control the sale of anything with BTC takes away from a goal of the project.  However I'd like to keep useing coins.

Ii feel if no community policeing is done someone else will attempt to do it for us.  They won't be so nice about it and the penalty will apply to everyone.  I propose we restrict ourselves from allowing contraband, booze or tobacco products in areas of the world they maybe controled in.

Long story short;

Don't make it easy for some 11 year old kid to fuck everything up buying party favors to get laid off bitmit

You can buy meth and heroin off of SR. Who cares if some 11 year old gets drunk. He can go through his parents' liquor cabinet for that anyways.

And at this current time, drugs and gambling make up the bulk of the bitcoin economy, so blocking vices does more harm than good...
287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I think I fucked up... sent 2btc to wrong address.. help?! on: August 14, 2013, 02:25:00 PM
It shouldn't matter if you reset the address. When any BTC is sent to any address associated with your account it should credit you.
288  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / I just got .5 BTC out of nowhere? on: August 14, 2013, 01:55:56 PM
So I was checking my email, when I noticed that I got an email from VirWoX saying "your deposit has been confirmed". I was confused because I don't really use VirWoX anymore. I went on the site and sure enough, I had received .5 BTC.

I know that I didn't send it. I also checked the blockchain and there is no record of any transactions with my btc deposit address, which is:

178gJy8mCtgXvon1i21XCK4gk7YCMhfYi5

Blockchain page: https://blockchain.info/address/178gJy8mCtgXvon1i21XCK4gk7YCMhfYi5

Any ideas on what happened?

Update: I've withdrawn the BTC to another account.

Update 2: I was able to withdraw the BTC to this address, although it has not received enough confirmations to be credited yet:

1xyyj3tb3To4TTdqcsVDvjfaZR5hxpGSQ

As you can see, the BTC is there, or at least on its way (minus Virwox's .01 fee).

Your only posts are about loans and gambling. At least put some effort into it.

I've never heard of him but I think it's amazing what he tried to do. I'm probably going to register as a World Citizen.

Also, keep in mind, a CEO might earn 2 million a year, but if he rakes in 50 million a year for the company it's a worthy investment.
No CEO has ever done that alone.

Do you have proof? Would Microsoft exist without Bill Gates? Would Apple have existed without Steve Jobs? Would Facebook have existed without Mark Zuckerberg?
292  Economy / Services / Re: Using my car as a mobile billboard for BTC. I want to advertise BTC businesses. on: August 14, 2013, 01:07:13 PM
It seems as though any potential advertisers could have a whole fleet if they wanted. Is there really no bitcoin business that would want to do this?
293  Economy / Economics / Re: Why do people trust in fiat money? on: August 14, 2013, 01:04:58 PM

That's why I don't have Euros here in the US... However if I went to Europe I could pay for gas, rent, and food with Euros. I can't pay for those anywhere with bitcoin.

Also, I believe the topic says "Why do people trust in fiat money?" not "Why do people trust in Euros?" or "Why do people trust in USD?" It is implied that when someone says "fiat" they are talking about the government issued legal tender, ie; what people actually use. There is no country where fiat is not accepted because it is the official, legal tender of a country.

There is one country that accept bitcoin payment, but this country does not physically exist, in fact it exists everywhere on this planet where people accept the bitcoin payment. And this country's economy is growing at an amazing speed

The "value" of the bitcoin economy is increasing... If you measure it in fiat. A bitcoin is worth $100 only in USD. If measured in material goods it is worthnext to nothing, as you simply cannot buy all necessary items with bitcoins. Until this happens it is impossible to have a bitcoin economy.
294  Other / Politics & Society / Re: WTF is wrong with America? on: August 14, 2013, 01:01:27 PM
You guys strayed wide off topic again, the question remains: Why is the US raping the rest of the world and how long are they gonna take it.

The US is top-dog in the Anarchic hierarchy, of course. They are the world police, the biggest bully on the block, they have the biggest military and the most guns. Therefore, when negotiations and other formal niceties break down, they can just say "do what we say, or else!" The world is going to keep taking it until someone else becomes top-dog. The only other contenders I can think of right now are China, Russia, maybe some kind of revitalised British empire if they can get all those Commonwealth countries obediently onside. A couple of other possibilities: Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Japanese empires. As Germany demonstrated in the last century, they're all sleeping giants with no apparent interest in dominating the world, therefore anything can happen Cheesy

Alternatively, instead of thinking about the world along country lines, we can focus on language and other aspects of culture. How do cultures develop and spread? People participate in them. They go there, live there, work there, speak the language, and make babies. In the XX century the US culture spread around the world for a variety of reasons, not just because of force. It has been running out of steam for a while so it'll change eventually.

New British Empire? I don't think so. The Commonwealth is a joke. It's more of a formality than an alliance. Maybe Canada and Australia would hop on board but I could never see India or Pakistan following the UK. Going against the US would also destroy its economy, as the US is its largest trading partner.

China will not go against the US because it would be economic suicide for both countries. The majority of their economy which has allowed them to become a relevant power is based on trade with the US. The US is the only trading partner with a bigger economy than China, so China would have a tough time finding a partner who can keep up with an economy of 1.3 billion people. Meanwhile the US will need to find another source of cheap labor, which may be fairly easy (India, perhaps?), but will certainly lead to a depression in the interim.

Russia simply is not powerful enough. It is a shadow of the USSR. If they couldn't keep their territories like Georgia and Chechnya under check how can they be expected to defeat the most powerful country on Earth?

Spain has one of the worst economies in Europe, so they have no chance whatsover.

France is doing well economy-wise but has not been a strong military power since WWI.

Portugal is irrelevant on the world stage.

Japan has no offensive military, so good luck to them.

Germany does control the EU, however they're too busy babysitting Greece, Spain, Italy and Cyprus to do anything. If they could turn the EU into something actually representing a "Union" they might be able to contend with the US. The EU is the largest economy, so were it to unify into one body it is possible for it to go against the US. The EU is also fairly self-sufficient, however until it shows that it can act as a unified body and not a bunch of squabbling second-rate nations it will never be able to contest US dominance.

How would this process work with doctors? You can't learn medicine at home.

You can learn biology, A&P, and medical skills (IE: how to draw blood, insert a catheter, indicators, contraindicators, dx, rx, etc) at home.

You don't get the actual hands-on until medical school.  Good luck getting into one of those fancy degrees from a University.

I learned more in my job than I ever did at the University where I got my degree... but my work said they wanted to pay me more if I got one of those pieces of papers that says I am smarter than the average bear.

I would not allow a doctor who learned from home to operate on me. I work for a medical credentialing company, so I can say that formal education is actually very important. You'd never visit a doctor again if you knew how many have made up educations, or haven't even got their license. There have been people that have applied who are about as good a doctor as you or I.
296  Economy / Lending / Re: Need a 10BTC loan! | 5% interest per month. | Escrow. on: August 13, 2013, 07:31:51 PM
Hello there! My name is Oscar. I would like to borrow a few bitcoins which would be 10 coins in total. These would go to my website funding, I have a developer which needs to be paid and because I am making a gambling site, little of it would go to the bankroll.
Let me give you a few details why you should lend me:

• The coins would be returned with a 5% interest per month.

• You could speak to the developer if you want information from him.

• The site will become a Roll-The-Dice game.

That's basicly everything to say right now.

Cheers!

UPDATE: Escrow with John K could be avaible if needed.

I don't get what goes into escrow. You're asking for a loan... If John K holds onto the money then how will you pay your developer? I figure that you would need collateral for this.
297  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Entitlement Mentality on: August 13, 2013, 06:56:18 PM

My opinion actually matters because I've eaten at both restaurants. You've admitted that you have not eaten at In-n-Out. Given that, you might consider that my opinion carries more weight than yours.

And you might want to factor in this:

http://consumerist.com/2011/06/30/science-confirms-in-n-out-burger-is-the-best-and-mcdonalds-the-worst/

http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/07/02/in-n-out-v-mcdonalds-which-burger-chain-has-been-deemed-superior/

http://voices.yahoo.com/in-n-out-vs-mcdonalds-337393.html

http://blogs.wsj.com/independentstreet/2009/01/28/in-n-out-burger-vs-mcdonalds-guess-who-won/

But I guess you guys think you know better because it's important to save face with your arguments.

Stop being a bunch of dumbfucks.

The argument was on what is a better business. I do not care whatsoever what people think the quality is. McDonald's is more successful and cheaper. Also, how does McDonald's rank lowest if it's the most popular, I wonder?
298  Economy / Economics / Re: [POLL] Accept Bitcoins only? Please vote in the poll. on: August 13, 2013, 06:46:13 PM
We are working on an online project which is not related to the Bitcoin world in any way. So far we are offering free services to thousands of users every day, but within a couple of months we should introduce commercial services too. And I am thinking about this:

Would it be a good thing to go with Bitcoin ONLY for accepting payments for the commercial services? Would accepting Bitcoin and Bitcoin ONLY encourage Bitcoiners to go with us, or would they NOT care at all if we also implement PayPal and fiat methods?

Would it make a difference? If we want to support Bitcoin by accepting it, would accepting Bitcoin only be appreciated more by the community than just accepting it besides others?

What do you think?

Of course that we can start with Bitcoin and add PayPal later and thus effectively finding the answer ourselves later, but once we do PayPal, there is hardly how to take it back down.

If it's not related to bitcoin, why would you solely have the option to pay with bitcoin? Wouldn't that alienate your customers?
299  Economy / Economics / Re: Creating a Charity on: August 13, 2013, 06:44:32 PM
I don't know how easy it will be to find a real charity that accepts BTC. Most charitable organizations won't be able to spend the BTC, so they would have to transfer it to fiat, and that's a waste of time.
300  Economy / Lending / Re: I need 0.50 btc for Marijuana on Silk Road on: August 13, 2013, 06:41:35 PM
I am unaware of any newer or better findings on hallucenogens than Dr. Shultes.

I looked through that (skimmed it, mind you), and could not find any references to modern cannabis forms, such as wax.

It also seems like he focuses on natural strains, whereas pretty much any strain you find on the street (or in OPs case, SR) will be some form of weed bred in a lab for maximum potency.

He also says that Cannabis doesn't grow in polar regions or wet forested tropics but that's just not true.
