281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DASH] Dash | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW, Darksend and InstantX on: July 27, 2015, 01:18:45 PM
Those words "trusted people".....they kept me up a few nights thinking about any project proposing to create a system that relies on this kind of trust.

There are now almost 3,000 MNs. All with untouched collateral funds.

Some thoughts on options:

1. Segregate 25% of MN collateral for mixing

2. Allow MNs to mix while remaining part of the MN count.

They are there to provide a service. Darksend is one of the key protocol services.

For example.

During the mixing process, the protocol randomly chooses a number of MNs to elect into the mixing process.

Now, add this.

Create a trivial nonce so that all remaining MNs compete for being liquidity mixing providers. The first 10 to solve a trivial problem are elected to do the mixing, for which the people wanting coins to be mixed pay these MNs a fee.

Possibly add a 'mixing = true' function into the config settings so anyone not wanting to compete for mixing fees can opt out of being a liquidity provider.

There are some fundamental problems with anonymising the MN collateral inputs...

Made a minor addition to the banknodemanager page, it will give you a count of any active BNs you have listed in your mybanknodes.txt file and there's a checkbox to hide everything but your own if you want. (It waits for the next list refresh to do so, so don't panic if nothing happens for a few seconds.)

283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BITCREDIT | SPV WALLET IN TESTING on: July 25, 2015, 08:59:50 PM
Is bitcreditscc still with us? It's been over a week since his last post.

Just checking! Smiley

By the way, I'm really curious to see when the 'new' wallet is ready and how it looks like. Have the bugs been crushed so far?

https://github.com/bitcreditscc?tab=activity

- He's a worker.  Smiley   There's a bunch of architectural stuff to get in place for the bid-based distribution system and blockchain assets (coloured coins.)

Not sure what new wallet you mean, but the last few QT builds I've done from the rc branch haven't needed me to delete the mncache before starting it up. I'm on linux, can't comment on Windows. The electrum client/server still needs a bit of work before it's ready for primetime.

Nice quotable quote on HN:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9945139

Quote
Ask HN: Are there any startups disrupting business banking?

”Ally and Simple are doing a great job in the consumer space, but is there anyone working on business banking?

We have used both national and local banks and it's nothing but a struggle. Fees to receive money, fees to move money, fees to send money. There's a fee for just about everything, and almost nothing works as it should.

Cheers

Graham

I do find it baffling when somebody on here posts a story about some bank or other "investigating blockchain technology!" or somesuch, and seems to believe that next week JP Morgan, Cityigroup, HSBC and Barclays etc. are all for some unfathomable reason going to be building their own hydroelectric power stations and deploying pebble beds and tokomaks to power city-sized warehouses of ASICs to mine Bitcoin with.

A blockchain isn't that complex of a concept (how long has CMOS circuitry been around? Wink) and discrete entities don't even need it to be distributed much, other than for failover redundancy. Clue to those who get exited about such reports: big money will certainly adopt blockchains where they find it profitable to do so, but it won't be the Bitcoin blockchain.

There's a big gap in the market though for an off-the-shelf solution, and BCR is inching towards that but we need to connect with the right people to help achieve it. And the fiat / digital-token barrier is a big one - it can maybe be sidestepped with other asset classes than fiat as backing though, and advocates of some of those other asset classes might prove receptive to a dovetailing of some common goals.
285  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BITCREDIT | SPV WALLET IN TESTING on: July 22, 2015, 03:14:37 PM
A BCR pump from these prices would be epic.

Still under the radar and very undervalued..

Some quick thoughts on the direction BCR is headed, and why:

Cryptocurrencies right now are all backed by nothing. When you push a BTC zealot on this, they all fall back to, "Well, at least BTC isn't backed by debt! Zero > -$200 000 000 000, right?" Maybe, but zero is still zero.

To date there has been nobody willing to bridge the gap between the trustless ideal of crptocurrencies, and reality. The real world doesn't function trustlessly. The real world isn't made up of a p2p ditributed hash table of binary integers, it's made up of people, things, and the relationships between those people and things, and those relationships in the real world involve trust.

In order for any currency to have real and lasting value, it needs to be backed by something other than faith and the hot air from ASIC/GPU farms. Fiat currencies all find their true market worth in the end: nothing.

Cryptocurrency enthusuiasts deride government issued fiat currencies, but what difference is there really between a government promising to pay the bearer, or an ASIC manufacturer promising to pay the bearer? BTC is a fiat currency just as much as the US dollar is, it's just 'backed' by empty promises from someone other than a government.

When BCR holders can see in-wallet exactly what assets BCR was backed by at any time, and what their own share of those assets is, BCR isn't just hot air and faith any more, it's a real-asset backed fund with distributed access to those assets, a fund that you don't need an expensive broker to buy and sell, a fund that let's all users transfer wealth freely (as in, it's yours, you can do what you want with it with no arbitrary restrictions, there might still be a very small tx fee) anywhere in the world. It's the best of both worlds, and far more likely to attract investment than a project that is made of nothing but money that has already been spent on fancy hardware that serves no useful purpose and the electricity to run it all.

It's going to be a long road and there's a bunch of hurdles to be overcome, but nothing insurmountable. I'll take the measured risk of owning a sensibly secured portfolio of something real over "investing" in someone else's profits any day of the week.

Traditional fiat currencies backed by the theft of compulsory taxation (Proof of Violence, as Kristov Atlas calls it) all eventually fail. BTC is just fiat backed by idealism, and it will fail too because ultimately it has no real value at all to anyone except the hardware manufacturers and utility companies.

All other cryptocurrencies are nothing but gambling toys for the cryptognat faithful to lose money on and profit engines for the likes of KNC and the pump and dump groups. BCR is going to replace those speculative bubbles with cold hard loot, and it will be your cold hard loot.

Cryptocurrencies might be technically trustless or close to trustless, but their market value is 100% trust, because that's all there is to them.

Just forgot to add BCR: before each address, now it works Smiley

Switching to horizontal position and total sum works in python script but in app doesn't.

Tried to add my bittrex address to monitor my exchange wallet, but forgot that it doesn't work this way, it will only show some coins when I will send some to this address.

For now Cointrader allows to monitor your coins with exchange api, but it's far from perfect.

Glad you got it working.  I limited it to portrait mode only to avoid having to redo the layout in landscape mode.

I can very quickly put up another app to get all your Bittrex balances if that would be useful to you. You would just need to enter your Bittrex API keys, which you can find under your account settings somewhere or other on Bittrex, and it would display eg. all your non-zero exchange balances. I'd need to encrypt your keys though if they were being stored on your phone.

Might bring a few more eyeballs to my BCR ads.  Cheesy

I get unknown error during installation-504

Edit:

After uninstalling Mybanknodes it starts and shows addresses but after pushing update button nothing changes, still shows only addresses.

Does your network indicator light up when you tap Update? If network connectivity is bad or a block explorer or bitfinex/bittrex is down it will eventually time out. I tested it on about half a dozen different phones/android versions and apart from looking a bit untidy on some screen resolutions it worked OK as long as the connection was good, ie. I was connected to wifi, not using the phone network.

If anyone has a few spare minutes would you mind giving my android app another try? Pretty sure I have sorted the file path thing out, plus now it creates what it needs anyway, you just need to stick your currency:address lines in the file.

I've stuck it on Google Play, any feedback good or bad would be welcome.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.crouton.lone.mybanknodes&hl=en

If the link doesn't work for you just search Play for 'mycrypto' - it's the only app with that name.

Looks good.

Can I add more than one by putting it where dash is and if so do I just copy all the same things after the address?

The stuff after the address on each line is just the results of the last search, so yes just add whatever new currency:address pairs you want and delete the examples. When I add a new address to my list I just copy a new list in afresh with the new one added, without any history. Maybe I should store the previous search results in a separate file, make it less confusing.

The electrum client is clearly connecting to available servers but it isn't pulling the headers from them (or the server isn't pushing them out) - no idea why yet.

edit: bitcreditscc figured it out, by RTFM'ing... you need a www in front of your server...  Cheesy

Electrum-BCR lives.  Smiley

291  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BITCREDIT | NEW BANKNODES | UPDATE 6/15/15 on: July 15, 2015, 11:33:57 AM
Is the solution forking to a different algo? Just curious as some on Nvidia cards won't touch this algo as there are not optimized miners like AMD.

The solution will hopefully involve doing away with mining as a distribution mechanism altogether.

PoW is ridiculous, the Bitcoin network uses enough electricity to power a small country in order to process a maximum of seven transactions per second. KNC are building their own hydroelectric dam to power their acres of ASIC racks. It's a hideously wasteful and exclusionary system and it belongs in the bin.

And anyone who tells you that all that wasted electricity imbues a bunch of 1's and 0's with value needs their head examined.  Cheesy

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/new-spanish-service-lets-people-buy-bitcoin-local-stores/

Wondering if something like this could be incorporated into the bidding and distribution process?

Someone who wants to bid on the day's fresh BCR buys a bid ticket for whatever amount they wish on Amazon or ebay or the BCR website or wherever, in whatever currency they want. Each ticket has a privkey on it which after the superblock is run, they can use to import whatever they have 'won' into their wallet.

Or they could simply buy a $10 card worth however many BCR... maybe the average of the last week's bids?

All proceeds to the Bitcredit Asset Fund that everyone with BCR owns a proportional part of. That will provide increasing price stability (at increasing price!) as it grows.

Remember, for users (as opposed to speculators) the actual BCR price isn't that relevant. They just want to eg. transfer some wealth to their family back home, who can cash it out if they want into whatever their local currency is.

Same as when you're going on holiday to LaLaLand, you don't really care how many LaLaBucks you get per $/£/€, you just buy whatever you can afford or think you'll need.

If anyone can spare a little time to put together some simple guides that would be great. And I mean simple -

How do I find my Bitcredit address(es)?
How do I send BCR?
What does "Immature Balance" mean?
How do I add a sending address to my addressbook?
How do I set my password?
What is a paper wallet?
How do I get my address privkey(s) so I can recover my BCR if my wallet file gets lost or I forget my password? (Most cryptognats skip this one, and I know a few who have bitterly regretted not taking this simple step.)

etc.

Anything your granny might ask or find useful. Something you wish you had known to begin with. Screenshots optional but welcome, any format you like.  Smiley

I seem to have got electrum-server running, these were the steps after installing and running configure / python setup.py install:

change /etc/electrum.conf line 'path = /var/electrum-server' (or whatever it was) to 'path = /home/tlc/.bitcredit' or wherever your datadir is (none of the documentation makes this step clear, maybe it's supposed to be obvious?) and make sure you've got your ports/username/rpcpassword etc correct

put txindex=1 in your bitcredit.conf

restart daemon with ./bitcredit-cli -reindex

check sync with getinfo

when synced, electrum-server start

/var/log/electrum.log should show something like:
[11/07/2015-02:10:18] Starting Electrum server on localhost
[11/07/2015-02:10:19] Database version 3
[11/07/2015-02:10:19] Blockchain height 3

[11/07/2015-02:10:19] TCP server started on 127.0.0.1:70001

Now to try the client again and see if I can talk to it...

edit: got client running, it generates a bunch of BCR addresses and looks good,  but it stays offline with
File "/home/tlc/Downloads/electrum-Bit-Electrum/gui/qt/network_dialog.py", line 47, in __init__
    self.servers = network.get_servers()

Lo, another technicolour crouton post!

I have made a few simple ads for Bitcredit:

I shall be putting them in an android app that after another bit of testing should be on Google Play shortly:

You feed it a list of crypto addresses and it gives you balance etc. Works with BTC and any other currency that's indexed by chainz and traded on bittrex (for the BTC values). US$ prices courtesy of Bitfinex. Some currencies (DASH for one) need me to either get an API key from chainz (fairglu is an excellent chap btw!) or use an alternate public explorer for that currency, I'll get around to these things as and when I have time.

No, all those addresses are not mine, sadly.

It'll be a free app, I might alternate BCR ads and Google ads. Anyway, if 50 people download it, that'll probably double the number of folk who know about Bitcredit...  Smiley

If anyone can make some BCR-advertising gifs of about 350x56 to 400x75 (ish) then please do, I can use them.

Probably still far too much technobabble in there for Granny Public, but IQ's are dropping rapidly with each generation, Granny might make more sense of it than her grandson/daughter Jo.

Next thing it does is just read the first line of the file and display it on the screen. Then it asynchonously fetches the balance for that address, while reading in and displaying the next line. It should at least get as far as displaying the first address before anything that can go wrong happens.

Are you sure there's anything in your mybanknodes.txt file? Shouldn't be any blank lines, just
bcraddress
bcraddress
bcraddress
...

Where do I get the "mybanknodes.txt" file from? Appdata foldr?

Make it! It's just a text file with whatever BCR addresses you want in it, one on each line. The app just reads the file line by line and queries the chainz block explorer for a balance for that address.

Right now it polls the chainz API, and that database is only updated every couple of hours. I could pull the live web page for the up-to-the-last-block address balance but that needs a bit more code added to parse the crapload of html that gets returned, and it's a much slower process. Might add the option in the next version, time permitting.

Looks great, but still file not found, I also have made mybanknodes folder previously to have some order in files, even copied it to both sdcard and extsdcard.

Bugger.   /sdcard, /sdcard0, /sdcard/0, /sdcard/emulated/0 should all just symlink to /sdcard.

Try this, you enter the location yourself of wherever you put it: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=94269125168536291897

Android doesn't have a built in GUI file selector dialog, you have to write one yourself or use someone elses. I'll try and incorporate one into the next build if I don't find a simpler solution.
