281  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: SeedSigner: Review on: February 08, 2024, 07:02:06 PM
Raspberry Pi zero isn't designed to run Linux, as far as I'm concerned. It has 512 MB RAM, and almost all distros I know require more than that. How do you suggest we utilize such a source without having e.g., /dev/urandom?

You can install Linux on RPi Zero 2W which is the model I have. I have installed Raspbian Lite. The problem with it, is that it supports WiFi, which is a problem. Anyway, SeedSigner is an OS, so we need to go deep into its code to check if we can use something like /dev/urandom. If SeedSigner is like a linux distribution, it could be possible, but I seriously have no idea if it is doable.

You are a staff member, can you comment on what is the difference between the type of ban on o_e_l_e_o's account and someone that gets banned for any rule infringements, like plagiarism? I mean, why doesn't it show as banned on BPIP's website but only if you have the BPIP extension installed?

Visually, if a user is temporarily banned or permanently banned or nuked or if that user has locked his account, I will see the same thing : User is currently banned.
BPIP must monitor the modlog, but as no moderator has acted on o_e_l_e_o's account, lock does not appear and BPIP has not seen it. BPIP will need to take manual action to correct the status of o_e_l_e_o's account on BPIP (but that's not something they seem to do).

There is also something that I noticed in o_e_l_e_o's thread.
o_e_l_e_o said: "In a week or so, once this thread has run its course, I'll ask theymos to lock this account."
Is locking something different? Perhaps something that acts like a ban, but not in the sense of "I ban you for insulting". I hope it makes sense.

edit: according to Halab, it looks like the account is locked, not banned.
283  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: SeedSigner: Review on: February 08, 2024, 06:14:54 PM
Brilliant guide BlackHatCoiner. I have also tried to assemble a SeedSigner in the past. Suddenly the camera stopped working and I had it changed.

I like SeedSigner because in general I like DIY stuff. However, I dislike the "enter your own randomness" idea. Therefore I don't really use it.

But SeedSigner had all the small conveniences I wanted. Like the fact that you can easily scan a QR code to load the wallet (I think Jade has this feature too).

Nevertheless, I have a question and I have also thought about it. Do you believe it would be a good idea to slightly change the code to generate entropy using some CSPRNG source? It's still too abstract in my mind, but perhaps you have thought about it too. I mean since the code is open-source. I have recently written this script: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5483173.0 which uses /dev/urandom to generate entropy. It doesn't do anything too fancy, but perhaps we could incorporate something similar to the Seed Signer. Perhaps...
284  Other / Meta / Re: Delete account on: February 08, 2024, 05:50:57 PM
Only admin can delete the accounts but I don't think that admin has enough time to delete accounts of the users who create accounts and ask others that how to delete the account.

Correct. But OP can do both:

1. Contact the admins via PM to ask for account deletion, providing a reason. (Perhaps they will delete it, perhaps not).
2. Meanwhile, OP can forget about the account and continue with their life like bitcointalk doesn't exist.
285  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Braavos Wallet Hack Challenge With $150k USDC Wallet Balance on: February 08, 2024, 02:01:52 PM
I don't have an X account so the only thing I see is a seed phrase.

The seed phrase is a BIP39 seed phrase that leads to an empty wallet.

The 2FA mechanism, in my opinion, is another way of saying:
1. "we give you one of the cosigners in a multisig vault, where the other one is held by us"
2. "we give you the seed phrase and we hold the passphrase"

In both occasions, the wallet that is produced by the seed phrase above is totally different than the one produced in occasions (1) and (2).

Nice marketing strategy. Before now, I never heard of Braavos, after reading the topic I did some finding and discovered it's a hardware wallet.

Anyone please help me understand Electrum 2FA wallet first. I always thought once I have the wallet seed, then no matter if the wallet is encrypted with a password or have 2FA, I can always restore the wallet. Was I wrong? I never needed a 2FA wallet.

Hi! I think my answer above answers your question. The seed phrase is always enough to restore a wallet. But if the wallet is produced using a passphrase, then it is essentially a totally different wallet. If the wallet is a multisig, then again it is a totally different wallet. Thus, the experiment above is not valid, unless I understand something wrong.

I can give you my seed phrase. I am very confident that I will not be hacked because I have added a random passphrase of >256 bits of entropy.

So essentially if I give you my seed phrase, you will see no coins inside, unless you manage to brute force my passphrase, which will never happen, so the only option is to beat me or threaten me.

And if what I say is correct, then I have already done it with Electrum, Sparrow, BS Green and many more wallets.

Therefore, I agree with you, it's a marketing trick.

I've personally gained a lot of crypto knowledge from people in this forum without paying a dime, same with every newbie here, even experienced members increase their knowledge from other members without paying fees, this is the modus operendi of this forum as far as I know. So I implore the OP not to be selfish with his knowledge, let him share for free, just like every other members that have something valuable and helpful to other forum members. Ofcourse there are rewards in this great forum, share quality ideas that are meaningful in the forum and fellow members will give you merit for it, then you'll rank up and be eligible to earn in signature campaigns. Isn't that a better way to earn here?

Yes exactly, but the way you posted it is like you ask for my confirmation, but I think you wanted to quote OP.

I definitely agree with you. In fact, I am a huge fan of "sharing knowledge for free". I love learning new stuff and in my opinion, ideas and knowledge are free. It's the services and the products that need to be paid.
287  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Privacy Protocols on: February 08, 2024, 07:48:17 AM
I believe Satoshi is a privacy expert.
He created an online persona and there is literally nobody else on this planet that knows this persona is linked with the real person behind Satoshi.

Now, let's speculate, just for fun.

1. Intentional choice:
Perhaps Satoshi wanted to increase our need for self-privacy. Perhaps Satoshi knew that privacy can be achieved with Bitcoin, but that it requires a little more effort.

2. Coincidence:
On April 23, 2011, Satoshi said "I have moved on to other things".

Quote
Satoshi Nakamoto <satoshin@gmx.com>   Sat, Apr 23, 2011 at 3:40 PM
To: Mike Hearn <mike@plan99.net>
I had a few other things on my mind (as always). One is, are you planning on rejoining the community at some point (eg for code reviews), or is your plan to permanently step back from the limelight?

I've moved on to other things.  It's in good hands with Gavin and everyone.

I do hope your BitcoinJ continues to be developed into an alternative client.  It gives Java devs something to work on, and it's easier with a simpler foundation that doesn't have to do everything.  It'll get critical mass when impatient new users can get started using it while the other one is still downloading the block chain.

Perhaps Satoshi decided to add Ring Signatures and Stealth Addresses to Bitcoin when it was already too late. And perhaps Satoshi Nakamoto became Nicolas van Saberhagen and developed CryptoNote which is the base layer of Monero.

Conclusion:
Unfortunately we can only speculate. But, in my opinion, Satoshi knew about Ring Signatures and Stealth Addresses and the reason he didn't add them to Bitcoin was because he knew that people would speculate that Bitcoin is only built to support illicit activities. Some people still believe it today. The reason I am saying that, is that there is a message from Satoshi to Gavin Andresen that says:

Quote
I wish you wouldn’t keep talking about me as a mysterious shadowy figure, the press just turns that into a pirate currency angle. Maybe instead make it about the open source project and give more credit to your dev contributors; it helps motivate them.

It is obvious that Satoshi Nakamoto wanted to develop a transparent way to transact P2P and that would become widely adopted. Perhaps he intentionally added pseudonymity and not untreacability, so that people wouldn't think Bitcoin was only used for illegal activities. But...
288  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 07, 2024, 08:00:44 PM
I have found some good options in BISQ with very low fees.
It is debatable if Bisq is better than eXch in BTC<->XMR swaps, if ignored self-custody for a moment. In Bisq, both traders need to make a total of four Bitcoin transactions. At current fee rates (~28 sat/vb for medium priority), that's about $7. Then, it is the trading fees (funding the DAO). If you pay in BSQ, it can come as cheap as 0.075% of the amount exchanged, if you're the maker. That's really low, and from my experience, you do find takers if you leave it open for at least a day. Just don't sell it at a premium price. People don't choose premium as they do with fiat trades.

To me, eXch is better if you're in hurry. Otherwise, Bisq is more flexible and cheaper for large amounts.

This is exactly what I have noticed myself too. Exch is also easier to use in my opinion and it has the additional advantage that you don't have to install anything on your computer (except for TOR of course).

Look, personally, I use both for privacy reasons, I don't want to solely depend on a single application. So far, I never had issues.

I don't think EXCH lacks self-custody. In fact it is not a wallet. I think you know that, but maybe I misunderstood what you wrote.
289  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Aqua wallet - Bitcoin, Lightning, Liquid on: February 07, 2024, 07:56:10 PM
I did use both Green and Aqua wallet.
Green desktop wallet is better if you want to use BTC and L-BTC with hardware wallets (Jade or ledger s), so it's much more secure, but you can use it standalone also.
Aqua mobile wallet is more used for spending and accepting smaller payments in LN and L-BTC, this is something in between Lightning and on-chain bitcoin, but you have all of them supported.
Advantage of Aqua wallet is that it has integrated swaps, and it can accept USDT from other chains and convert it to Liquid.

All wallets currently supporting Liquid assets (L-BTC, L-USDT, etc):

Thank you. As far as I know, Green wallet doesn't support LN payments, but only on-chain and Liquid.
I think Aqua also supports buying BTC, but Green doesn't.

Anyway, have you concluded which one is best for you (as a mobile wallet only)?
290  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 07, 2024, 07:31:35 PM
There are more and more websites and services that accept both bitcoin and monero payments.
I know one website from Europe called shopinbit.com that is even giving 3% discount for all BTC and XMR payments, and they even have topic created here last year I think.

Yep I am aware of this website. I will check it, I have never used it, but since I am both based in Europe, I will give it a try.

I think that centralized exchanges are creating fake value for most coins, and they don't have all coins like they claim.

I think FTX's CEO faces these charges exactly. I haven't pursued the whole story, but I reckon the main accusations are because of this.

Thanks for this list OP. I am very happy to be included in this, because my purpose, since I joined is to be helpful.

Just a correction though, my rank is still Sr. Member and not Hero Member. It doesn't make a difference, but I just mention it in case you find a flaw in your scraping mechanism.

I don't want to spoil your thread with discussion messages, so feel free not to answer me. Cheers!

294  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Aqua wallet - Bitcoin, Lightning, Liquid on: February 07, 2024, 10:45:49 AM
I am interested in knowing more about the Liquid aspect of Bitcoin.

I have tested it with Blockstream Green and I liked it so far, but I need to study more about Liquid Bitcoin.

Has anyone ever used Green? I am interested in comparing these 2 wallets (Green and Aqua), but only for the Liquid Bitcoin and not the other features. Are there any significant differences?

Perhaps dkbit98 can help me? I see that you point out Green above.
295  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 07, 2024, 08:32:36 AM
I guess it's to protect the exchange against speculation. If I'm not mistaken, the total balance on eXch dropped quite a lot yesterday.
The fees dropped to 10%/9% already. Exchanging the other way is 5%/5.5%, and surprisingly the Dynamic rate is the highest for this trade.

It worked to be honest. The high fees made me rethink and I didn't proceed personally. I have found some good options in BISQ with very low fees. There are options definitely. I think Exch uses good automation tools to avoid issues. So, to this extent, well done to the Devs.
296  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Introducing a New Cryptographic Solution for Bitcoin Recovery Seed Security on: February 07, 2024, 07:46:58 AM
It is using javascript, which is not very common for security related purposes, but I have some questions:

Use case
I entered the phrase '12345' and it produced a cipher. I decrypted it fine. Then I took the encrypted key and put it in another browser on another computer and it still worked.

Questions
1. How many iterations do you use for the key?
2. Is it normal that the same phrase always produces different cipher? I am not familiar with AES.
3. How do you plan to store the cipher? It must be stored offline, since if it is stored online, anyone can grab it and perform the same decryption algorithm to get the initial phrase. I used it in a different computer, so I have tested it. So, if it must be stored offline, and if someone grabs it, your funds can be compromised, why should anyone store the cipher instead of the original seed phrase, since the security level is equal, as the "thief" will need to do the exact same thing to compromise the wallet? Not to mention that storing the cipher offline is dangerous for obvious reasons. I mean a seed phrase consists of english words which are easily understood but the cipher is an unpredictable sequence of characters.
297  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 06, 2024, 06:49:00 PM
Lol yeah, I always find funny people who are trading XMR on Binance.
They simply does not care about the qualities/goals of XMR, and probably bought it because of some temporarly hype on X or any other social media,

But this is great news, no more shitty Binance related things for this community. Thus, no more Moneruns needed anymore (for now). The less "paper XMR" they sell, the better it will be for people.

For me XMR is a tool and nothing more than that. It serves its purpose perfectly. And its purpose is to be used for anonymous payments. Luckily I have found some sellers that accept XMR especially in the collectables sector, so I have actually used XMR to buy stuff. And I really like it. So as long as I can have more of this tool, I feel good about it. However, there is a catch. Payments must be in XMR and not in USD (but paid in XMR). Because 1 XMR is 1 XMR but if the price is converted from USD to XMR then the seller will want the same price as before the dump, but you will need to pay higher amounts in XMR.

Back to the "new normal". 23 sat vB is still pretty high imo.

I always transferred with less than 10 sat vB, usually even below 5. Just needed some patience..

I am sure that paid2 was refering to the XMR-BTC trading fee which diminished from 5% to 1%

EDIT

What the hell is that:

298  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 06, 2024, 04:10:20 PM
I think XMR price is astonishingly attractive at the moment! I still can't get my head around this drop. In fact this drop is not justified at all. Like Loyce said, it's surprising that people quit privacy coins because they can't buy them without maintaining their privacy.
299  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 06, 2024, 12:28:36 PM
The 5% fee is back to 0.5 or 1% again. Probably because Binance delisting Monero. Monero dropped 17% now. Imagine that, people dumping their privacy coin because they can no longer trade it on a KYC exchange....

Haha exciting. Gonna do some exchanges for sure. By the way, is there any kyc exchange that still list XMR? I think kraken does. But anyway. I am still surprised how easy people forget their whole investment thesis because of a minor change in the environment.

300  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What to know of Nodes and Running a Node on: February 05, 2024, 05:56:12 PM
People above said it all, but I want to make things even simpler.

A node is device that runs bitcoin software. Bitcoin is a piece of software.

If you are absolutely new to the concept and have no idea at all, you can follow this link: https://bitcoincore.org/en/download/ and download Bitcoin Core.

It will take some time (some days) to sync and then you will be running a node. It's simple as that.
