Goodbye 600!
282  Economy / Speculation / Re: Which profession has the best chance of predicting Bitcoin prices? on: July 22, 2014, 10:35:02 PM
For example, if there was a psychologist, a computer programmer, a mathematician, and an economist, who do you think would have the best chance of correctly predicting the price of Bitcoin over time?

This feels a bit like asking which profession is better for building a house. Bricklayer, carpenter, plumber or electrician? (Pick one.)

You can do better with hammer and saw than hammer alone.

I put my money on applied bayesian decision theory with mathematics, psychology, computer science, programming, behavioral economics and game theory.

Accurate time series forecasting is hard. Instead, think big picture: Divide the utility of Bitcoin by the chance of success.

Conclusion: Bitcoin is undervalued. Prediction for the price of Bitcoin over time: Up.

Fonzie? Did bitcoin jump the shark? Nobody told me!

284  Economy / Speculation / Re: "Dell is now the world's largest ecommerce business to accept #bitcoin" on: July 22, 2014, 02:21:22 PM
Big news. How much longer can the price continue to ignore these developments?

I wonder that too, how can Dell and Newegg accept bitcoin, and the price does not budge?

What the hell?

These are the doldrums. Same thing happened last year.

The good news was relentless, but the price didn't move. And then it did.

Anyone have an estimate on how much he stole?

I'd guess somewhere between several hundred and a few thousand BTC.
286  Economy / Speculation / Re: "Dell is now the world's largest ecommerce business to accept #bitcoin" on: July 18, 2014, 04:42:08 PM
This is huge. They will also be offering a discount for bitcoin purchases. 10%+ discounts for using BTC is what's going to drive consumer adoption.

Amazing.  Just to clarify, it looks as though the 10% discount is only good for the purchase of an Alienware complete system.  They aren't giving a 10% discount for all bitcoin purchases.  But this is definitely major.

Haha! They probably figure that if there's one market segment that can actually afford Alienware computers, it would be (Bitcoin) early adopters. Grin

Surely many will ask "Why would I pay Dell in bitcoins?". Well Dell wants to promote the currency so much they will be giving a discount:
"we’ll be offering a special Alienware promotion wherein customers can save 10% off a new Alienware system purchase (up to $150 limit) when checking out with bitcoin"

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8053860

Not only are they accepting Bitcoin. They're promoting it. And offering a Bitcoin discount from Day 1!

Revenue numbers from Wikipedia: US$ 56.94 billion (2013)[3]

That's... Easily more than Overstock and NewEgg and Flowers.com and every other Bitcoin business put together. And then some.

You can't show us a little of what your link is? I don't click on random pdf files.

It's a .gov site.

*puts on tinfoil hat*

...Exactly.

This changes nothing. Only news is that we might be on the news, lol.

History will prove you wrong, friend.

This changes the game... for... who? Businesses and financial institutions in the world's #1 financial hub.

This means existing financial entities are getting the necessary go-ahead from regulators.

This means they are getting an onboarding path for working with Bitcoin.

This means Financial technology startups are going to base out of New York instead of California.

Less than a year ago, before the senate hearings, Bitcoin being effectively outlawed in the United States was totally plausible.

And now look where we are...

Maybe nothing changes to you, right now, but in the big picture of things, this is as crucial as it gets.

If I give op 100 percent of the btc he gave me to get this contract would you be happy?

Sounds good.

I will save you the time as it is a trick question as he did not give me btc. You fail to understand what is goin on.

Explain... Oh,

Goat is playing on a technicality on what was lent to him.

The problem with his head-fake here is that the contract states the conversion rate of bonds to BTC.

Goat, are you trying to pull a "Matthew Neill Wright" on Gurrty here?  Roll Eyes
300  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: His Most Eminent Highness Grand Caesar Imperator Goat owe me 3740.35 BTC on: May 25, 2014, 04:25:03 AM
Personally, I think that a partial repayment would be reasonable even if Goat can afford the whole thing. The contract says "best effort" (...)

I think any court would find the terms of the contract insane enough to make the whole thing null and void.

And also that Goat owes Gurrty the full principal, if Gurrty can establish that he sent the money.

In a nutshell: If it can be established that you gave me a million dollars according to some completely insane contract, and the contract is found to be invalid... I don't get to keep the million.
