281  Economy / Services / Re: Book scanning! Support open culture and get a PDF/djvu of a book you want! on: August 15, 2011, 04:17:39 PM
This idea seems like it has a lot of potential. Maybe we need a specialized Silk Road for this?

283  Economy / Economics / Re: demurrage instead of fees on: July 25, 2011, 12:12:36 PM
Demurrage is exactly the same thing as increasing the money supply. There are no special economic results that will occur under demurrage that will not happen under regular money supply inflation.

Demurrage is simply expressing the amount of bitcoins you have as a fraction of the tot6al supply instead of hard units.

This is key. Just to explain a bit more, let's say that in 2010 there are 10 million X in existence and you have 100 X. In 2020, the number of X goes up to 20 million. The result is twofold:

1) Your share of the total sum of money has decreased from 10 per million to 5 per million.
2) Every 10 minutes (assuming money supply growth is exponential), a miner gets coins equal to 1.3 per million (since 1.0000013 ^ (6 * 24 * 365 * 10) = 2). This income transfer to miners carries certain economic effects (encouraging mining, reducing the bitcoin price due to for-profit miners wanting to sell, etc)

Now, let's say there is no inflation, but there is demurrage. In 2010, there are 10 million X in existence and you have 100 X. In 2020, there are still 10 million X but you have 50 X. The result is:

1) Your share of the total sum of money has decreased from 10 per million to 5 per million. In order to effect this change, every 10 minutes, 1.3 per million must be lost out of every pool of money every 10 minutes (since 0.9999987 ^ (6 * 24 * 365 * 10) = 0.5).
2) To keep the money supply constant, every 10 minutes a miner gets coins equal to 1.3 per million of the total money supply.

The two scenarios are EXACTLY THE SAME.
284  Economy / Speculation / Re: Long, slow slide on: July 19, 2011, 05:56:13 PM
Having just witnessed the two-dollar plus rally from 12.50 just now, I'm not subscribing to the 'slow death' theory either.

How do you know that's not just interventionist policy on the part of some early adopters?

Question 2: if it is, does it matter?
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are 24/hr Trades Really That Good Of An Idea? on: July 17, 2011, 12:11:31 AM
If you want to take an 8-hour break from trading, you can. Just convert all your bitcoins into whatever your home currency is at the end of the day and convert it back the next morning. That way you can feel safe and secure with your money and not lose sleep while everyone else keeps trading. If something causes the price to rise or fall during those 8 hours, then if there was an enforced break that same movement would happen within minutes of the market opening and people who didn't log in fast enough would still miss out.
286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is This Bitcoin Weekly Comic Crap? on: July 16, 2011, 06:38:03 PM
While we're all here, if anyone has any suggestions for what you would like to see from my Bitcoin Weekly articles, I'd be glad to hear them - either here or commenting on the site is good. My articles for this week are close to done already, but I'll be sure to keep them in mind for next week and the future!
287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 16, 2011, 12:19:00 AM
I exclusively use mybitcoin.com as payment processor on all my sites.  I have never had any trouble with them.  However, all the problems I see reported do concern me.  I suppose at some point I'll sync my stores with the bitcoin client running on my servers, but with mybitcoin.com running well for me, it's hard to justify taking the time.

So, I guess the best strategy is to use it on minimal trust mode (ie. use it for the service, but keep as little as possible in the account).
288  Economy / Economics / Re: Cryptocurrency & sustainable taxation on: July 11, 2011, 03:39:14 PM
The vast majority of people will still be assessable for income tax.  If you work for someone else, they will be required to report your income.

1. I have done work for people in exchange for Bitcoin already. I don't see any of my employers reporting anything to any tax agency. Of course, the money I'm making is far too small to matter, but if a couple more security precautions (eg. public key encrypting messages) are added it would be quite possible for online workers and employers to evade government taxation entirely.
2. So you want a system where people who make money by working for a physical employer can be taxed while people who make money off of money (eg. speculators) can avoid taxes untraceably?
289  Economy / Economics / Re: POLL: How you're planning on using your bitcoins on: July 06, 2011, 11:47:51 PM
Spend a bit if I see anything spendworthy, donate/tip a percentage and save the rest.
290  Economy / Economics / Re: Proposal: Idea for a much more stable bitcoin on: July 06, 2011, 11:43:39 PM
an emergency fee of transactions (in percentage, calculated by severity) could be imposed and destroyed, which would stop the hyper inflation very quickly and effectively.

No, that wouldn't. It would reduce the number of coins out there, but it would reduce the value of each one even more since it would become nearly useless for its only purpose, spending.
291  Economy / Services / Re: Spendbitcoins.com on: July 03, 2011, 09:56:20 AM
Another happy customer here.

The fact that I can now make online purchases without involving credit cards, banks or Paypal anywhere in the process still hasn't ceased to amaze me.

.u’i mi tcidu lojban

.ui coi pendo jbopre .i le'i vi jbopre se kancu fi na'e li so'e

Greetings, fellow Lojbanist! There aren't many of us here! (lit: the set of Lojban people here is not counted to be a lot)

mi jinvi ledu'u lu u'i mi tcidu lo lojbo li'u zmadu drani kei ri'a lonu lu mi tcidu lojban li'u claxu zo la kei .e lonu lu mi tcidu la lojban li'u ji'a na'e drani ri'a lonu do tcidu ginai le lojbo bangu ge lo se cusku bebau la lojban.

I think "u'i mi tcidu lo lojbo" is more correct because "mi tcidu lojban" lacks the article and "mi tcidu la lojban" is also not correct since you're reading not the Lojban janguage, but rather something written in Lojban.
297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Taking hours to get my client connected on: June 29, 2011, 10:47:16 AM
My client is, for the past few weeks, taking a really long time to get connected to the network. Is there any way I can fix this?
298  Economy / Marketplace / [RANSOM] Bitcoin Weekly Business Model Experiment on: June 24, 2011, 05:38:42 PM
Hey, guys. Us folks at Bitcoin Weekly (http://bitcoinweekly.com/) are running low on cash, so we've decided to try a novel business model to get things rolling. We got an article locked up, Bitcoin for Individual-to-Individual Transactions and Community Trade, by me, and we're not giving it up until a total of 0.500 BTC (as of my original writing this 0.319 remaining; you can check progress here: http://blockexplorer.com/address/1JYXS3dpHjk9MT7U6oXNKwfVeubW41iWkf) is placed into that address. So if you like Bitcoin Weekly, or you're feeling generous right now, or perhaps you got a sudden windfall from one of those pyramid schemes, or you're just plain bored, please consider donating to us! We are, of course, still continuing to release other articles, and remember: all our content is public domain! If our experiment succeeds, we'll keep doing it and even set up an automated system to show the ransom on our website, and hopefully we'll get a nice steady revenue stream going so we can expand our operations and pay more to our writers.

I haven't managed to institute enough discipline on myself to learn Lojban yet, i would like to though

ps:before anyone asks, no, i won't be paying for Lojban lessons, i don't got enough BTC right now to be comfortable with spending in such things

Learning Lojban can be hard, this is probably the fifth time I'm trying. It does take discipline to get enough gismu and cmavo memorized, but then it's more fun to learn by reading Lojban IRC logs, which can be found here: http://www.lojban.org/resources/irclog/
