If things may change as you suggested, why are you so certain that Africa or Asia won't produce a winner? You don't underestimate a nation because of how it is seen on a global level. Will you be surprised if Senegal wins the World Cup despite their excellent and consistent performance? FIFA might not be fair to them, whether it be an Asian or African side, but no matter the biases and misjudgement that will be made, what will be will be.

Based on the historical records, it doesn't seem likely that Senegal would win the world cup. They've managed to qualify only a couple of times to the world cup, and their absolute best was at Korea-Japan 2002 where they ended up 7th.

I don't really see them as a strong candidate for winning this world cup, there are many other stronger teams. But as you say, anything can happen and they of course have the chance of winning.

If UEFA had not started the Nations League, European teams would have played uninteresting friendlies against unattractive opponents.
Now European teams have the opportunity to participate in an interesting and attractive competition against the strongest European teams, earn good money and at the same time check the strength of their team.
I think that the concept of this competition is very well received by the public and that every year it becomes more and more popular.
Of course, it is the hardest for the players who arrive tired after a difficult club season in Europe, but it is difficult to find free time for this type of competition, especially in the year when the world cup is played.

Yeah, I think it's a good thing for European countries, but that means that there's less friendly matches between European teams and the rest of the world. So for example Argentina and Brazil don't get to play with stronger teams in their friendly matches.

It would be interesting to actually see that final. The decision of the world championship, to be played by the best players in the world in the last decade.
Although I think that Portugal has the team to reach the final, I have serious doubts that they are capable. There is a lot of controversy around the Portugal coach, his old-fashioned style of play and the choices he makes.

Yeah, it would be a really fascinating final, all the eyes of the world would be on Messi and Ronaldo. Both great players doing their best to try to win the world cup for their country, in probably what would be the last chance of their professional lives.

Although I think the final will have Brazil in it...

To be fair to Belgium, they have some quality young players emerging as well. There are De Keteleare and Saelemeakers from Milan and Onana from Everton - all young and highly rated. Faez from Leicester as well.

Belgium still has a core of elite players playing on top of their game - they are near the top of my list of favorites to win. Croatia is good - I fancy our chances - but we'll be more of a dark horse than a serious contender.

Yeah, Belgium does have a pretty decent squad, and I'm sure they'll end up going to the next stage. But actually winning the world cup?, I don't think so. There are way too many better teams. Belgium would have to be extremely lucky a couple of times to actually win the tournament. But hey, you never know with football...
2805  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How to choose an online casino? on: October 09, 2022, 08:04:45 AM

I agree with you. The first thing to pay attention to is the time of operation of the casino and its reputation. Decent casinos are indeed very numerous and many of them are represented on this forum, so it is not too difficult to check their reputation. In addition, some casinos together with respected managers of this forum hold subscription campaigns, in which you can earn money for gambling. This is a good opportunity to gamble without wasting the family budget.

Yeah, older casinos have more history so it's easier to know if they're a good place to go. But having said that they probably don't have the best promotions, as those are probably coming from the newer casinos to attract more people to their services.

It's a bit riskier to try the new ones, but sometimes they are actually quite alright and they have good deals from time to time, which is not as common in older casinos.
2806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Now is the perfect time to invest in Bitcoin on: October 09, 2022, 08:00:54 AM
I think for most of the people "it's the right time to doubt Bitcoin" and obviously they will buy when Bitcoin is in its new all time high price again and will complain that why Bitcoin is dumping, then they will trash talk it, so classic. Anyways, this is indeed the right time to buy, if you have the capital to do so, invest it in Bitcoin rather than let it sleep in your bank account for years without gaining anything at all.

Yeah, for an asset like Bitcoin, which is supposed to appreciate in value over the long term, this is a good opportunity to buy indeed.

But you never really know if it's going down a bit more, so that's why buying small amounts of Bitcoin over a long period of time is usually the safest way to do it. Less risk but also less chances of higher returns.
2807  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Guide] Solo mine testnet bitcoins with bfgminer, Bitcoin Core, and a CPU/GPU on: October 06, 2022, 05:10:31 AM
You really should mention that by design the Testnet coins have ZERO monetary value. Purchase and sale of them is strongly discouraged as Testnet and its coins are for testing software -- not making money... Mining them and holding them is also pretty pointless because the Testnet chain is periodically forked to render previously mined Testnet coins unusable.

After a development project is over it is expected that all Testnet coins mined during testing are to be donated back to the Faucets.

Yeah, I didn't mention it because I thought that was well known for the people reading the Development & Technical Discussion forum. It's basically for people that don't want to depend on faucets to test their projects. Once you know how to do it you can mine some testnet bitcoin for yourself overnight, even if there's no faucets available.

But you're right, it might be worth noting it for people that come here from the outside through a search or a link. Yes, testnet bitcoins are only useful for testing, they don't have any other value, and they can even disappear at any time. That's also why I didn't mention any kind of security for the wallet, because it doesn't matter.

~snip~
I'm glad that you went on to explain that it is possible to mine bitcoins with a GPU.  It always bugs me when people say it isn't possible, when it most definitely is.  Is it profitable?  That's a whole other story.  Even if BTC went to a million it would probably be a losing venture to mine with a GPU.  If you're feeling like the luckiest man on earth, you could solo mine BTC with a GPU and hope to hit a block.  If you were able to beat the odds and make it happen, you'd be legendary.  I'm sure you'd be much better off buying lottery tickets though.

You can still actually get blocks in Bitcoin testnet by solo mining with a GPU as the difficulty resets to 1 after 20 minutes with no new blocks. More details here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5415861.0

Jexi, 2019 comedy.

The plot follows a self-aware smartphone that becomes emotionally attached to its socially awkward owner.

There are a bunch of "Bitcoin miners" in his room. I think they were just GPUs though, but anyway, Bitcoin was mentioned.
2810  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is It An Easy Transition From Gamer To Gambler In Casino. on: October 05, 2022, 01:15:33 AM
I always consider gaming as gambling I have seen many gamblers spend a lot of money for their character and to level up their account for future profit, like selling their stuff and their character.

If you're a gamer or someone is a gamer and would like to try to gamble in online casinos will it become an easy transition as all the elements of gambling are present when you're a gamer, or does a gamer have to start all over again, and have a different motivation and mindset?

Gambling machines have basically a similar design than games. You want to keep the person entertained there as much as possible, and also you want the person to come back again, so you get some addiction design thrown in.

Similar things that work in game design work in gambling apps, so that's why they might seem like the same thing, or very closely related. The main difference is that at least in gaming you go back to it by trying to have fun(although lately this has changed a bit with companies trying to up-sell everything in games), whereas in gambling you go back to try to win money(or recover what you've already lost).
2811  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new stickminer that does 300+GH on: October 04, 2022, 10:57:11 PM
If you are messing with the voltage pot without having the usb power meter in on a stick already having issues you are basically shooting in the dark.  I’ve seen people try to tell you that you can do it without it, but again it doesn’t always work.

And Sidehack is right they test for 24hr and every one of mine has been fine at 400mhz from the day I got them.  Some did get finicky as I went higher, hince why I literally have hours tuning every single stick individually to run them where they are today at 575mhz.

Also what are you using for cooling?  The fan you maybe using may not be enough especially if you have tweaked the voltage and it’s now too high.  I’ve had some that even slight adjustments went to stupid amounts fast and they would get INCREDIBLY hot.

Also what is your start script like what voltage do you have them ramp up from?

Yeah, the temperature change is huge when you increase the frequency.

I've tested them at 200MHz and I think it might even be possible to run at that frequency with no fans, the heatsink is just a bit warm as in you can keep touching it. They only do about 100GH/s at that frequency though.

Then I tested it at around 400MHz and it definitely needed a fan, you can still touch the heatsink but you can't really keep your hands there.

I can imagine that going 500+MHz would make it like lava, and probably you would need a special USB hub at those freqs plus a really good fan.

I wonder if Google keeps statistics on its forecasts? I would like to know how accurate they are.

I don't think they do, it's probably just an internal data.

Some people are trying to understand how Google calculates these probabilities and it seems it's all quite private.

At least there are some explanations in that link that might help understand the model a bit better, but we really don't know how accurate it is from outside Google.
2813  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Guide] Solo mine testnet bitcoins with bfgminer, Bitcoin Core, and a CPU/GPU on: October 04, 2022, 01:37:50 PM
I managed to compile it after spending some time to find the name of the dependency on my OS. bfgminer doesn't support Bech32 address, but otherwise i didn't experience other problem.

I do not run my computer 24/7, so let's see how much block i mined after 3-7 days.

Ah, yes, I mentioned it in the previous guide but forgot to mention it here again as bfgminer also expects a legacy address:

If you don't have a testnet btc address yet, note that Bitcoin Core now doesn't generate a wallet by default any more so you will need to create one. You can read about it in createwallet. Then you should be able to getnewaddress. Make sure to use the legacy format as that's what cgminer is expecting. You address should start with n or m.

Good luck hitting some blocks with a CPU/GPU!, it worked for me but it's noticeably less frequent than using an ASIC, even a tiny USB one like the Compac F.
2814  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is this statiscally possible in a lottery? on: October 04, 2022, 09:16:40 AM
Its obviously possible but its so unlikely that it feels rigged. I don't what exactly they were aiming at. But its known that some machines may be rigged with hot and cold balls (I am not very sure tho)
But I read in another thread that there were like more than 4 hundred winners. That's too much. Never experienced something like this before. But I think that may be proof its not rigged. 400 winners can't be exploit/rig/fixing.

It's as likely as any other combination.

It just feels wrong because of how humans perceive statistics.

For example, if you throw a dice one time and it's a 6, that doesn't change the fact that the next roll has 1/6 chances of being another 6. If there's a second 6 in a row that also doesn't change the fact the next roll still has 1/6 chances of being a 6, but at that moment lots of people would think that it's way less probable to have another 6 than the actual probability, which is 1/6.

I'd do it if i have SHA-256 ASIC or testnet difficulty is low enough where i can try it with CPU or GPU Grin. That's also why i sometimes use Signet network to try/test something.

I just posted a new guide that doesn't require an ASIC. It only uses the CPU and/or the GPU of a normal computer, so you should be able to test it.
2816  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / [Guide] Solo mine testnet bitcoins with bfgminer, Bitcoin Core, and a CPU/GPU on: October 04, 2022, 05:43:39 AM
Following my previous guide about how to solo mine testnet bitcoins with an ASIC and cgminer I'm now presenting a guide on how to do the same but without the need of an ASIC. That means that you'll be able to mine testnet bitcoins with any computer that has a CPU and/or a GPU.

This should work on pretty much any laptop or desktop, even those with the new M1 chips from Apple. Of course the faster the CPU/GPU, the better chances you'll have to hit some blocks.

You might be wondering how is this even possible. The answer is that the difficulty in testnet3 reverts to 1 after 20 minutes have passed with no one finding a block. A difficulty of 1 is so low that any CPU or GPU is capable of hitting a block. Note that this was the difficulty of Bitcoin in the beginning(2009). More details about this can be read here: https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/18554/how-can-i-find-the-real-difficulty-on-testnet

OK, so let's make it happen. First, you need to setup Bitcoin Core in the same way as with the other guide. Here's a copy of it for simplicity:

Step 1: Install and run Bitcoin Core

We're going to use the folder ~/bitcoin_testnet to save everything so that it's easy to remove once you're done and to keep things simple. You can of course use a different path if you want.

Inside ~/bitcoin_testnet create a folder called data:

Code:
mkdir -p ~/bitcoin_testnet/data

Download the Bitcoin Core for your platform into ~/bitcoin_testnet/ and extract it there.

Now let's prepare the configuration file. Create a text file named bitcoin_testnet.conf in ~/bitcoin_testnet/ and put these content in it:

Code:
testnet=1
txindex=1
server=1
[test]
rpcport=5000
rpcallowip=YOUR_MINER_IP
rpcuser=YOUR_RPC_USER
rpcpassword=YOUR_RPC_PASSWORD
rpcbind=0.0.0.0

The thing that you need to understand here is that you're setting up the Bitcoin node to run in testnet, and you're defining an RPC port(5000 in this case, can be anything), user and password, and whitelisting a specific IP to connect to your node(YOUR_MINER_IP). You'll need these details and your Bitcoin node IP later when connecting from bfgminer.

You can now start running your Bitcoin node by doing the following(make sure to change user to your actual user):

Code:
/home/user/bitcoin_testnet/bitcoin-23.0/bin/bitcoind -conf=/home/user/bitcoin_testnet/bitcoin_testnet.conf -datadir=/home/user/bitcoin_testnet/data

If you want, you can keep this running in the background with screen:

Code:
screen -dm -S bitcoin_testnet /home/user/bitcoin_testnet/bitcoin-23.0/bin/bitcoind -conf=/home/user/bitcoin_testnet/bitcoin_testnet.conf -datadir=/home/user/bitcoin_testnet/data

You can then see what's happening with:

Code:
screen -r bitcoin_testnet

To detach the screen, simply press Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-D. You'll be back in the console, and the command will continue running in the background.

Step 2: Install and run bfgminer

Since cgminer removed the CPU/GPU functionality a long time ago, we're going to use bfgminer. You need to compile it from source code to activate these features, so that's what we're going to do. First let's install some dependencies:

Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf automake libtool pkg-config libcurl4-gnutls-dev libjansson-dev uthash-dev libncursesw5-dev libudev-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libevent-dev libmicrohttpd-dev libhidapi-dev libsensors-dev

Now we're ready to get, configure, and make bfgminer with support for CPU and GPU mining. Also note that we need to update the git: sources to https: in the .gitmodules file, otherwise it won't work. I'm using sed here to do this, but you can of course do it manually if you prefer.

Code:
cd ~/bitcoin_testnet/
git clone https://github.com/luke-jr/bfgminer
cd bfgminer
sed -i 's/git:/https:/g' .gitmodules
./autogen.sh
./configure --enable-opencl --enable-cpumining
make

After it finished the build, you can now simply start mining your testnet bitcoins:

Code:
~/bitcoin_testnet/bfgminer/bfgminer -S opencl:auto -S cpu:auto -o http://YOUR_BITCOIN_CORE_IP:5000 -u YOUR_RPC_USER -p YOUR_RPC_PASSWORD --generate-to YOUR_TESTNET_BTC_ADDRESS --coinbase-sig "Whatever you want to write"

And that's it. Your computer should now be mining with the CPU and the GPU using OpenCL. Leave it overnight and you'll probably see some testnet bitcoins in your address.

Some questions you might have:

Q: Can I use only the GPU?

A: You can use one or the other instead of both by simply not adding it to the command (i.e. just use -S opencl:auto for GPU only or just use -S cpu:auto for CPU only).

Q: Why are there two(or more) pools in the dashboard?

A: If you are running another instance of Bitcoin Core in the local machine bfgminer will try to mine there as well. If you don't want that to happen, simply add --no-local-bitcoin to the command.

Q: Can I use a Raspberry Pi?

A: Actually yes, it should work with CPU mining, but extremely slow. You might get lucky though.
2817  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: When betting becomes to high on: October 04, 2022, 03:51:47 AM

In my case I do not blame newbies when they make the mistake of thinking they can actually become profitable when they gamble, my problem is that some of those newbies never really learn their lesson, they lose all of their capital and instead of thinking that this is a trend that is going to continue they believe that this was an exception, so the next time they gather some money they gamble once again with the intention of becoming profitable, then at some point they realize all the money they have lost and then they keep gambling hoping to recover it, and by that point there is a very high chance that they are already addicted to gambling.

The entire gambling industry creates games, machines, systems, etc, that create an illusion that the gambler might win big next time, and try to be as addictive as possible.

On the other side you have the cold, boring math that tells the gambler that it will lose all the money in the long term. There's also no money in pushing this side, so the message rarely gets to the gambler, other than "Gamble Responsibly" or similar.

It's hard for some people to just rationalize this, and act accordingly. Many people will just follow the fantasy because it's designed to be more attractive than reality, which is quite boring in comparison.

League of Nations is organized by the UEFA, and that is the reason why it is comprised only of European teams. I am not sure whether the FIFA will be interested in anything like this, as it may have a negative impact on the revenues from the world cup. The main issue is not with the League of Nations, but with the clubs. Already there were demands from some of the European clubs to shift the world cup schedule, as it overlaps with their league matches. FIFA did the right thing by throwing their demands in the dust bin.

Right, yes. The World Cup should have the highest priority.

I'm surprised that UEFA didn't schedule those matches correctly though. It's pretty obvious that all the teams will be preferring to play the World Cup than the Nations League.
2819  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Now is the perfect time to invest in Bitcoin on: October 04, 2022, 02:07:03 AM
This is certain, but many people still believe that we have not reached the bottom yet and they are waiting for the price of Bitcoin to fall further, the price is now very suitable to buy but we can see the price drop again, so following the DCA strategy will be the best solution to get the best average price . I don't expect there to be a big rally in the near term so it's best to buy whenever the opportunity presents itself.

DCA for the long term seems to be the best strategy if you just want to live your life and not worry about the price of Bitcoin 24/7.

Sure, maybe in some cases it won't be better than lump sum at a specific time, but in many cases it will be better as well, with the added benefit of not having to pay attention to the price swings.

Surely a solid point because playing League of Nations is much better than we have useless friendly matches which are completely nonsense but here they need to have few things which are surely important like big teams must play with their top players and try to have good attitude which will bring this competition more entertaining right now most of the teams are not playing positively may be because of coming world cup but still very good performance from few teams is giving good results for them and their chances in coming world cup like many are talking about the Netherlands which is surely one of the best team currently with Croatia is also having good performance in this event.

This League of Nations is surely one of the best platform for European teams because this is helping them for improving quality and having better strategy and system for big events like UEFA Europe Cup and World Cup.

The bad thing about the League of Nations is that it removes a lot of friendly matches between South America and Europe.

It would be interesting to have a world wide version of it.
