2804  Economy / Economics / Re: Shrinkflation on: May 04, 2023, 10:51:38 AM

Inflation makes everything rise, so might as well keep the original quantity and just increase the price.
This kind of unfortunate. I was thinking the situation of reduction in quality of products to meet up with cost and to make profit is only a Nigerian and African phenomenon at large but not knowing it is a general syndrome of the world but why? Imagine where medicines and drugs are reduced to be made in lower quality to meet up to cost, it means the efficacy of such medicine will reduce or may not even have any effect whatsoever but cause more damages to the organs of the body. I think the government has a lot to do on this and IMO instead of reducing of quality of products it will be better the size are reduced and you have smaller prices and big sizes of different price but adequate content of the high quality of the product especially for house hold products. To reduce the quality of drugs is an aberration that is counterproductive and should be discouraged. One way to ensure quality are maintained is by regulation, monitoring and control. The Nigerian price control Act of 2004 has not been made active and so price goes up at random depending on the choice of the seller to fix his or her own price independently.

Do you agree? How would you combat inflation if you were running a company?

As a business man or woman, you are limited to combate inflation because it arises from government policy, you can only try to reduce your cost of running your business through bulk buying and reduced transportation, reduction on unnecessary cost and focus on products in demand to ensure ROI.
2805  Economy / Economics / Re: Effects of Cryptocurrency Adoption on: May 02, 2023, 04:05:29 PM

Vietnam has the highest level of cryptocurrency adoption, with China and Nigeria engaging in cryptocurrency-based trade due to foreign exchange policies.

How do you mean by this? The countries you mentioned still not embracing cryptocurrency fully or partially except in terms of population use through VPN or other means but those countries have not openly accepted or adopted its use. For example China is part of the Asian countries like Saudi Arabia that have not accepted the use of cryptocurrency, China has made it illegal to use bitcoin and ban icos. Vietnam also is not considered as countries adopting bitcoin because they only made it legal as an asset but as illegal for medium of exchange. I think that only means you have a choice to hodl and transact on it through exchange conversion or P2P but not generally accepted as a medium of exchange, so its growth is limited and how does it have the highest adoption rate above countries like USA? In the case of Nigeria, the story of adoption is not positive as it is still the case that almost three years, the country ban some crypto accounts linked with the bank. Nigeria has not adopted cryptocurrency but the population is finding their way through transactions on bitcoin and trading. So put your records straight to represent the fact.

I agree that it would be okey for them to stay together and decided not to have children or even adopt one instead.
But I doubt that is an option, since I have learnt from people living in Africa and also users on this forum that having children is an important part of the family culture there and not getting married and not procreating can lead to being socially rejected or stuff like that. In my opinion it is non-sense, since I am from the Americas; but I get how different cultures can be around the world.

I have learnt more about African culture since I joined this forum, tbh.

It is nice to know that you have learnt more about African culture and it is also good that you know that the culture is mutating  and going through alculturation which is affecting the social, economic or psychological state of a typical African society. I have to let you know that things like polygamy are giving way to monogamy giving rise to adoption of children where couples in nuclear homes are not able to procreate for one health reason or the other - this was not heard before. I guess your country (America) and other European countries have influenced African society a great deal to the extent you may not be able to trace a pure breed of African culture lately and this is the effect of brain drain going on in Africa. Unlike 30 years ago, abortion, adoption of children, monogamy and nuclear homes etc were not African practice but things have changed because of alculturation, a product of technological developments. The African culture is not what it was before now and if you want to learn more you can read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe .
2808  Economy / Economics / Re: Which do you prefer on: April 30, 2023, 12:51:51 PM

My question is guys which do you prefer, a steady monthly salary which you know that no matter what, it must come once the month ends or a business/ trading/ any other thing which you can do that you earn base on performance and you have the capacity to earn ten fold of what a civil servants might earn if you are good at it, but there is also a possibility that you may have a bad day in the office which you may even incurred some loss.

Which do you prefer an why.

If choosing in between the two, I will prefer business. Although monthly salary will steadily land inside your bank account at due time maybe monthly and you can plan based on that but the major disadvantage of that is inflation. When a salary is fixed, it value of purchase is being eaten up by inflation as the salary is stagnant while inflation fluctuate and that defeats the achievement that could have been made through a fixed income.

One of the ways to beat inflation is to keep generating income that fluctuates just as the inflation is. Business source of income is a function of inflation, like prices interact with profit  and buying and selling likewise. Like you have mentioned trading, although it is difficult and boosting of steady profit is not easy but for those having their ways, they are far better than civil servants who will rely on government at the end of the month and in some cases the salary is either delayed or not paid promptly thereby disorganizing the benefit of a salary job.

Have you bought btc to HODL and wonder when it will rise to a point where your life will be changed financially?

This is the reason for all the point about patience that you have listed. Having to put all your hope to be rich from bitcoin investment is a wrong idea.  You have to ask yourself question before you start to put your patience to taste on the small Satoshi you have invested. First, ask yourself how much investment in bitcoin are you hodling to expect your financial status to change? To invest and expect such, you should at least have a reasonable percentage in bitcoin this is the fact to consider. Example if you have a bitcoin at the current price of $28,000 then you expect double of it when price get to $56,000 and triple of it when price get to $84,000 and likewise when you have only invested 0.005btc initially. Therefore it only depends on your investment strength and not just the expectation of increase.
2810  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do you blame someone for your gambling losses? on: April 28, 2023, 10:14:41 PM
The amount they loss is big and they were trying to create false accusation to retrieve the fund back. Whom did they even accused? Was it the casino company or the representative  (sportbook maker)? The bookmarker is innocent of the accusation because the money did not directly enter the person's account but the casino's company account.

Quote
The EFCC, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said Oluwayemisi and Joshua squandered the sum of N5.6 million on sports betting and caused a false petition to be sent to the EFCC, alleging that the money was fraudulently withdrawn from their Opay account to a sports betting account by an unknown individual without their authorisation.

Having an independent analysis from this point on quote, by inference, it could appear there is a third party who perhaps had access to the bank account where they alleged the money was pulled out. I'm just making a legal deduction from " and caused a false petition to be sent to the EFCC,......" because it appears they wrote the petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who perhaps investigated with preponderance of evidence against them to find out they used the money themselves.

I don't like the punishment or fine give  to them. It is not going to be in anyway effective. Their punishment could have been rehabilitation and community service.

I don't like the aspect of option of meagre fine aspunishment either. That is exactly my challenge on this crime that I can't get my head over with. Some punitive measures are just as good as not pronounced because they don't in any way measure with offenses. I have some issues with some legal system because I think a punishment is suppose to wade people off a certain crime, what is pecuniary fine of 150,000 (about $210) as option against a jail term of 7 years or a crime of squandering $8,000 do to prevent future perjurers in gambling crimes.

Court sentences mother, son to 7 years imprisonment and what did they do? Court sentences mother, son to 7 years imprisonment

The mother and the son after gambling away 5.6 million naira, that is about $8,000. When the reality dawned on them, they gave false information in petition, accusing someone of fraudulently transferring the fund from their Opay account to the sport betting account without their authorization.

Could this be a case of making someone pay for what they didn't eat or a case of double standard.

Bet as you can sustain and not allow your emotions have a better part of you.

2814  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Central African Republic drops Bitcoin as Legal Tender on: April 27, 2023, 04:04:40 PM
Hello guys I wrote this article. Read it here for better formatting:
https://www.jbgsmining.com/en/post/central-african-republic-drops-bitcoin-as-legal-tender

I think this is a blog post. I have tried to search for other richer sources to confirm but not seen fresh update on that repeal of first law on adopting bitcoin as legal tender.

That said, Mexico is making a move towards accepting bitcoin as we speak and this isn't the richest, nor the safest country, so it can be done and it's going to be done more often in future.
IMO a great first step is not to make it hard for those who want to accept bitcoin, give people some freedom and it will grow in its own pace.

Ethiopia is also making the move to go in with bitcoin but the unfortunate thing is countries that are not yet prepared are those initiating such move. Like the case of CAR with less than 10% of her population having access to internet facility was a project waiting to crash.

Thinking deeply, I think there are few reasons for the rush to throw in all in the bid to make bitcoin a legal tender and that is countries trying to think bitcoin will improve their sorry economic status and overnight land them into economic riches whilst they are still deep in corruption. CAR is one of the poorest countries in Africa with illiteracy rate and no prior inclination towards bitcoin by its youths and citizens.

Another reason for the rush for making bitcoin a legal tender is to have an financial escape route like we have seen in some was zone countries who are trying to escape some financial sanctions like Russia.
2815  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why gambling and mixing called bad actors in bitcoin on: April 27, 2023, 12:08:16 PM
I noticed both Bitcoin mixing and online gambling using Bitcoin are mostly regarded as bad actors

This is simply a question of morality and not legality. For gambling yes in the distant past it was perceived by different jurisdiction to be an activity for people who are not able to find jobs to engage themselves, feed their families. It was peculiar classification of unemployed people, better definition for laziness and those looking for easy virtue. Back then the above description is the way African society see gambling and gamblers, a terrain for unsuccessful people, drunks and unuseful hands.

Also, you already understand what bitcoin mixer is. When a mixer company receive bitcoin from different people and utters or mixes them so that the original traceable identity will be lost and you can't trace the wallet where it was sent out from or whatever quantity sent or to be delivered afterwards. You see by simple understanding, it appears as if it is an illicit act but the debate about mixers is on the intent but not really on the process, the intent of which is to maintain the decentralized operations of bitcoin. So you now see different understanding and government alleging money laundering, drug paddling and other nefarious activities against bitcoin mixing. This is the background understanding of the reason associated with gambling and bitcoin mixing as bad actors but IMO, it all depends on the intent for mixing which I believe is for freedom exclusion of third party and the reason for gambling rate apart from fun is decrease in access to job.

So if you agree with this mundane analysis, you would understand why they are being associated as bad actors because if you look through the mirror of morality then you could see those vices.

Secondly, if Gambling and Bitcoin mixing services are called bad actors, what about centralized exchanges are they also perceived as bad actors in Bitcoin?

Exchanges scamming investors who innocently hodl coins with them should be considered as such. They are bad actors because they discourage people from investing and growing bitcoin. The law should be implemented against them however, it is better to invest wisely, not your key not your coins.
2816  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How do you stay updated on: April 26, 2023, 11:31:29 AM
Interest is what will put you through. Whatever we want to achieve, we must have interest to pursue it and it is the passion we have that will help us to sustain it when it becomes difficult for us to achieve that dream we evisage. Gambling is not easy to win in it. Therefore you need interest and passion first.

my best advise is that you should get DStv dish installed and subscribe to those channels

Not really. Most gamblers in football and boxing don't own DStv or satellite dish to play. It is interest that drives one to game houses to pay a token and watch some games.

At this point what do I do, I went out go get a DStv dish and installed presently now I watches most of the live matches and I understand more better than the way it was. I can bet and place my favorite team to win or not.

The buttom line is interest and passion like I have said earlier. In your case if you had not developed interest you wouldn't have moved out to better your viewing experience and knowledge on the games to better your gambling. Most gamblers I know don't have any of the luxury of staying at home to watch and bet whether soccer or boxing matches, they go out to gambling houses, hangout at bars or drinking places and visit sites to get a better analysis from even other people, I'm talking about real and chronic gamblers and not spontaneous gambling.

So interest is important because it is what sustains a gambler to continue after losing and of course the reason a gambler continues to play apart from chasing his losses is interest.

what information can you give someone like me?

These days anything you want is found on the internet, build the interest of reading and searching online about whatever game you want and boxing are provided for you with pictures which makes the story easily assimilated. So with interest, little information from different research source on the internet you can ask your relatives and friends on more knowledge. You also have to visit game houses, keep friends with gamblers. They say " birds of a feather flock together"

2819  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: About football betting on: April 21, 2023, 09:11:42 PM

This makes it more cleaner to me, there will be no tampering of the system or fine tunning their games to make gamblers loses more than they win.

Can anyone confirm if this is right? Or wrong.

You could be right except where some fans of football team or bettors complain of match fixing but on a larger scale, it is more possible that manipulation is reduced. The most part of your post is on comparison of soccer or football betting and casino games. Of course their modus are different, you are playing against the owner of a casino while in football you betting based on the general performance of the team and their place in the league table. Apart from visual soccer that is programmed, football is real and realistic, it can be considered as a provably fair game because its activities is open to the public with video assistant referees (VAR) giving more credence to its fair nature.
2820  Economy / Gambling / Re: A reminder for gamblers to avoid FortuneJack (ongoing lawsuit, 120k usd stolen) on: April 21, 2023, 03:38:54 PM

But then, it's also very possible to have a lawsuit ongoing without anybody knowing, most especially when the organization involved knows they that publicly announcing such could harm their reputation or probably cause their customers to start panicking which could in turn affect the organization's business negatively.

I don't think such news or story of lawsuit to such amount can be swept under the carpet. The press can not be gaged on that because it is a sellable news. Op can provide the lawsuit link if that is real but FortuneJack should make clearification to the scam accusation against them to build back the confidence of their customer.
