What surprises me the most is that such an important topic was not on the negotiation table from the very beginning since Qatar decided they wanted to host the world cup, we know a great deal of the income generated by football clubs all over the world comes from the sale of alcohol and I guess the same is true for the world cup, how is it possible that they are just negotiating something so important months before the competition? This just shows to me once again that FIFA gave the world cup to Qatar without thinking about all the challenges that doing such a thing will entail.

We don't really know all the details of the deal.

Maybe they did negotiate it, but they wanted to keep it quiet until later.

Maybe the Qatar government wants to be seen as pushing back, etc.

There are so many possible scenarios that could have happened in the conversations. Whatever is shown to the public is not necessarily exactly what was discussed in private.
2842  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fake Bitcoin. on: September 13, 2022, 03:43:38 AM
You don't own any Bitcoins if they're on an exchange.

It's basically an IOU until you actually withdraw them into your own wallet.

You need to make sure that you, and only you, have the private key to the wallet you're receiving Bitcoin.

Some exchanges even have delayed withdrawals. That's for them to ensure they have enough real Bitcoin to pay for everyone. And if they don't have enough, they will just halt withdrawals.

Don't be the one that didn't withdraw their money before it's too late.

the limit should be unlimited. if someone has already pay taxes on money they put into bitcoin, why should they have to pay taxes on it again? eventually the government wins and gets everything.

They are different taxes though. You never pay tax twice.

When you receive money from work, you pay income taxes.

If you buy Bitcoin with that money and then immediately sell at the same price (let's ignore exchange fees for now) you don't have to pay any more taxes.

You only pay taxes when you sell Bitcoin (or any other asset) at a higher value than what you paid for it. That's capital gains tax. You're paying on the extra money that you have.

You only pay on the extra money, not the initial one that's already taxed.

but actually alcohol is not completely banned there. even some hotels are still able to serve alcoholic beverages. The important thing is that we don't drink it on the streets. but at the stadium during the 2022 FIFA world cup it will be allowed. as long as the alcohol content is not too strong. in qatar alcohol can only be obtained and enjoyed in special places such as hotels. and for the FIFA world cup this time there is an additional place in the area around the stadium.
so I appreciate the qatar side who can be flexible with the special rules for this 2022 FIFA world cup.

Yeah, that has always been the case in places were alcohol is banned. Hotels and similar places were foreign people go to are usually allowed to sell alcohol.

Also, it's worth noting that some food does contain alcohol, like bread for example. A bread roll can have up to 1.9% of alcohol. This is similar to the content of alcohol from a light beer.

In any case, the world cup is getting closer and it's going to be extremely entertaining.

I also believe that the World Cup isn't a showcase for new talent.
Talented players who are starting their careers always manage to stand out and attract the attention of big teams even if they are playing in local and less-targeted championships.

Football moves a lot of money and has scouts all over the world, you don't have to get to the FIFA World Cup to be able to stand out.

Of course, but in the eyes of the public in general it's pretty obvious when a player does a great job in the world cup.

Also, scouts have limited capacity, they simply cannot track the performance of every single new player in the entire world.

If someone does great in the world cup, it's almost a guaranteed new hire at a top team soon afterwards.
2846  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The Rise of Mobile Gambling Is Leaving People Ruined and Unable to Quit on: September 09, 2022, 07:50:51 AM
I beg to differ. The rise of mobile gambling isn't leaving people ruined and unable to quit, it is a lack of discipline. A lack of self-control that's leaving people ruined. Did you realize that there are just as many mobile apps to prevent or ban access to gambling websites as there are mobile apps themselves? Think about it. And even more to prevent addiction (although I doubt they are successful).

You're absolutely right, but also these apps are designed to be as addictive as possible.

At the end of the day of course it's the responsibility of every individual, but society also should be around to help and guide them. You could compare this with drugs. Why bother making some drugs illegal when every individual should be able to control themselves?. Yes, it's their responsibility, but some guidelines at least from society are helpful.

2848  Economy / Collectibles / Re: New Australian 50 cent Coin with hidden code on: September 09, 2022, 12:53:58 AM
Interesting coin and concept... too bad this came out in 2019. Sad
Wonder if anyone cracked the code?

Yeah, the previous coin was cracked:

Following the recent completion of the competition, the Mint can now reveal that the secret message on the coin reads “there is no greater honour than the trust of the Australian people or weightier burden than protecting the security of Australia and its people”.

Queensland’s very own Andrew Olsson is the winner of the only proof coin in existence that featuring the 70th Anniversary of ASIO coin design.

This is how the new coin looks:

It is sold out already in the Royal Australian Mint, but you can get it from resellers on ebay, etc.

"The commemorative 50c coin contains four kinds of secret code."

"Like the early code breakers in ASD, you can get through some of the layers with but a pencil and paper but, right towards the end, you may need a computer to solve the last level"
2849  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The Rise of Mobile Gambling Is Leaving People Ruined and Unable to Quit on: September 09, 2022, 12:42:01 AM
It's a hard line to draw.

Personal responsibility is always there, and everyone decides what to do with their life.

And on the other hand you also have the business interest of putting themselves as conveniently as possible to a vast majority of people, in their phones.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to block businesses, instead it would be better that we think how to stop looking at our phones so often.

It's not only gambling, people staring at their phones, like zombies, swiping away their lives is really a problem.

Also the attention span of people has decreased substantially after smartphones became popular.

Phones are an incredible tool, but we need to use them more wisely.
2850  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why are FPGAs less efficient than ASICs in terms of computation? on: September 08, 2022, 11:56:25 PM
Keep in mind that for more complex calculations FPGA can be more efficient than current ASICS, because of better designs over time. Once you get a better design on an FPGA, that design can be "set in stone" on an ASIC and it will perform better than the FPGA, until newer designs start to appear.

But because what you need for mining Bitcoin is relatively simple, the main design hasn't really changed too much over the years. There are still improvements, but usually design changes on an FPGA are not as big to make a difference with an established design on an ASIC.

Basically if you have the same design on an FPGA and an ASIC, it will run much faster in an ASIC, because it has less components to do the same thing. On the other hand the ASIC is stuck with that design forever, whereas the FPGA can be changed.

Surely this is not good as we have no many quality players in this mega event but now after four years as teams are going to increase from 32 to 48 most chances we are going to have many stars from this list into next world cup because with the increase of teams many countries those are in the current event could be able to have good chance for qualifying and go through.

I am personally going to miss few one like Erling Haland, Luis Diaz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang these are surely deserved to be in this event with their quality and skills in this game they have and most chances surely few are coming in next event with bang.

Yeah, it's a good chance for the younger players in the teams that actually managed to qualify for this world cup. The whole world will be watching, so if they perform excellently well, many will continue to watch them after the world cup is done.

It's a fantastic opportunity for them.

I think it's a big disrespect what FIFA does by imposing its power against the laws and customs of a country.
If they (Fifa) have accepted Qatar as the host of the world cup, then these adjustments should be made and agreed in advance, without the pressure of trying to change things now so close to the event happening.
In the case of Qatar, we are talking about an extremely rich and powerful country too, so FIFA has more difficulties in imposing "its rules", however, imagine the power of persuasion that they must not have exercised against South Africa, for example.

It's an interesting thing to watch from the sideline.

I'm pretty sure they're having lots of discussions and debate with people in government. But having said that, Qatar also knew about FIFA sponsors, like Budweiser for example, plus all the previous world cups like the one in Brazil where they changed the law to allow selling alcohol in the stadiums.

I think it will eventually happen, but Qatar wants to keep it as quiet as possible. My guess is that the sale of alcohol was one of the conditions for the world cup to be held there. There's just way too much money to be made there.
2854  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will be running in your mind if Bitcoin reaches $1000 again on: September 07, 2022, 11:22:08 PM
buy like you never bought before

Absolutely right.

As long as the fundamentals of Bitcoins haven't changed, then the price movements in the short term are irrelevant. It's basically a huge sale.

We have some updates from Qatar about their alcohol policy as many fans are concerned about this, but things are slowly settling and authorities are giving updates time by time, hopefully we will have more in coming days about this all.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/62794507

Good to see some official updates on this:

The Fifa event will be taking place in a Muslim country in the Middle East for the first time, and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Islam.

A 40,000-capacity fan zone in the capital Doha has also been confirmed, where a drink can also be purchased.

Interesting, that's a lot of people. Stadiums in Qatar range from 40,000 to 80,000 in full capacity, 6 of 8 stadiums are for 40k people, so they would in theory be serving alcohol to the same amount of people that are inside the stadiums. Source: https://www.qatar2022.qa/en/tournament/stadiums

Not sure if they will be serving alcohol inside the stadiums though.

Just no only Brazil most of the top rank teams are coming here with great chance of winning this event because these are feeling they are done enough work for this and have 100% chance and as you are saying from your top of the head these teams having better chance then we are also have heads, and they are also feeling on this way but with different teams like right now many are feeling England is also going to be in last four and few are insisting about Croatia and Netherlands as these are also having quality and skill players.

But the main thing is going to be happened in ground and for this we have to wait for nearly two months as preparations are in last stage and hopefully soon we will have squads announcements as well which will give better shape for this event and its outcome.

Yeah, The Netherlands is an incredibly strong team, another candidate for winning the trophy. England might do it, but I'm personally not too sure about it, I think they will end up in the semis, or maybe runner up at most. And Croatia, well, they're good, but it would be a surprise if they end up winning the world cup.

But you never know in football, that's part of the charm.

Ronaldo is 37 years old and this maybe the last time that he is wearing the Portuguese national jersey. So anyway the team need to find new blood to replace Ronaldo. And there are a number of promising players emerging. But I don't think that anyone among them have the capability to fill the vacuum that will be left by CR7. I still remember the hype that surrounded Ronaldo when he played during Euro 2004. And remember the Battle of Nuremberg (2006)? Ronaldo was a big name by then. None of the younger players (Diogo Jota, André Silva, Rafael Leão.etc) can generate the same amount of hype now.

Yeah, I think the new superstar will come from another country. We'll see which team brings younger players, and hopefully there will be a surprise discovery this world cup. We need more superstars as the current ones are getting old and retiring soon.

So, you have concluded that a South American country will win the world cup? I beg to disagree with you judging by their past experience and the present team they have. Maybe you are looking at the side of Neymar and Messi, they can't do anything, you can mark my word for it. I have always respected them for their good football, but have you ever traced their performances in recent times? Their team will fail but they might reach the quarter-final. Argentina will not reach the semi-final even if Brazil would. Mark my words. I will always bet on Germany to take this trophy.

I just think that Brazil has great chances to win. It's never easy to predict which team will actually end up winning as there are many talented teams in the world cup.

From the top of my head I would say Germany, Spain, France, Argentina, and Brazil are capable of winning the world cup.
2859  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will be running in your mind if Bitcoin reaches $1000 again on: September 07, 2022, 02:24:00 AM
Well, the price already has dropped below a previous ATH, but all the core principles of Bitcoins are still true.

Tick, Tock, another block. The price will fluctuate over the months, and years, but it will go up as more people know about Bitcoin.
