2881  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin (DarkSend) | No Premine | Runs 30% cooler than scryp on: March 09, 2014, 06:25:29 PM
DRK has two big issues that I see:

(1) Because the power draw is only 60% of scrypt, large GPU farms that mine altcoins and dump them for BTC/fiat have an incentive to target DRK. More profit even at price parity due to lower electricity costs. This will keep market supply high perpetually and hence keep the price low.

(2) The legions of unremarkable clone-coins will implement DarkSend once it's open-sourced. See how zero-talent "devs" are copy-pasting Vertcoin's anti-ASIC adaptive N algorithm.

For both (1) and (2) the solution is greater adoption. In the case of (1) it reduces these quasi-commercial dumpers to a smaller proportion of the market. In the case of (2), it allows DRK to achieve escape velocity and get to a point where a competing clone coin can't catch up due to lacking the network effect.

So I see "marketing" as crucial, even in the short-term. In any case, DarkSend should probably be kept closed-source before hitting at least Bter and BTC38 (not that I'm in any position to advise devs). Call it an extended mandatory beta or something. Tongue

I agree, well said.

Personally, I don't think DarkSend should ever be open sourced. All it will result in are a ton of junk coins implementing it, and basically a ton of coins piggybacking on the dev's code here. Yes, if adoption was greater, then perhaps it'd make sense to open source. But to me, adoption means something like being able to be used for actual purchases somewhere.

So if DarkCoin turned into Bitcoin, sure, consider open source. But that sort of adoption would take years. Instead, if it was me, perhaps a verified 3rd party could look at the code for safety types of reasons every so often, rather than just release all of the code for free.

If the code is released, I expect the coin to drop in price ... a lot.
2882  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: w/ Fedoracoin Payment Processor - Rising up as coinpayments.net shuts down. on: March 09, 2014, 10:27:44 AM
I can't help but think that this would catch on better if the devs fully supported the name change to Tips. A Tips Payment Processor would appeal to to a lot more people, I'd think.

FedoraCoin as a name is sort of nonsense to most people... sort of like calling it FunnyHatCoin... the meme stuff worked for doge, but I wouldn't count on it working for other coins.

I only bought a small amount (couple of hundred coins), mostly between 4.5-12.5 ... guess an average around 8-9 overall, so not a great price. If it hits 16K+, I may sell and rebuy during a dip. Or at least sell enough to recoup what I paid, and if it goes lower, just rebuy then and end up with more coins. Of course the trick is figuring out when to sell, when to hold...

I'd like to hold some longterm regardless, even with my baby-sized amounts of coin.
2885  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are people really prepared to let Mazacoin die? on: March 07, 2014, 08:13:59 PM
I do find it a bit odd that the coin hasn't really taken off more than it has. People got all in an uproar over the doge Olympic thing with the bobsled team, and it was barely mentioned anywhere ... yet it still worked to raise the price (at least briefly).

I guess people are just jaded and are going with the pump and dump mindset, for almost any new coin, regardless of publicity or merit. The fact that almost the entire alt market has been down probably doesn't help matters.
2886  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MAZACOIN questions on: March 07, 2014, 05:36:14 PM
For a smallish amount of maza, you can just keep it on the exchange if you want. And yeah, see you don't trust cryptsy, but you aren't talking about a fortune in coins.
2887  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Undervalued coins on: March 07, 2014, 08:21:22 AM
Yep, goldcoin is on the 1st page, under a bunch of actual real gold coin sites, which basically just looks confusing.

And never said goldcoin was a pump and dump. It's more of a slow slide to oblivion -- 20K or so less current market cap than the mighty catcoin. It'd be better if goldcoin was new, as then at least there would be an excuse for the low marketcap.
2888  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Undervalued coins on: March 07, 2014, 08:06:14 AM
Yeah, as I stated, people will just hawk whatever coins they currently have and want to dump.

I don't get the GLD name thing, never did. The fact a crypto coin is called Gold Coin does not make it more valuable, doesn't make people want it more. And all it does in google is get people confused with actual coins made of gold.
2889  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Undervalued coins on: March 07, 2014, 07:57:32 AM
I was waiting for someone to bring up GLD coin. They finally beat their arch nemesis, the mighty BBQ coin, in market cap (or did, last time I checked).

As for a serious answer, I too like Darkcoin, but won't tell anyone to get it, or it's going to the moon, or any such nonsense. I am not sure if it's undervalued, but after they finish testing, it may very well be.
2890  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ██[MZC] MazaCoin - National Currency - now @ RussiaToday, Independent, Telegraph on: March 07, 2014, 05:41:38 AM
Looked briefly at some of the articles, but that's not what I meant. Has anyone from Lakota directly commented about the coin?

And I don't mean to sound overly critical, just curious. It may be in an article (or even in the article you posted) and I missed it.
2891  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ██[MZC] MazaCoin - National Currency - now @ RussiaToday, Independent, Telegraph on: March 07, 2014, 05:27:20 AM
To be honest, I'm not sure what to make of Maza right now.

If legit, it potentially can be rather big. Or perhaps it's all a scam.

Has there been any documented proof that the coin will be accepted as a currency by any tribe? And by that I mean the tribe themselves saying such, or an article quoting a tribal leader somewhere? Any official news somewhere (and twitter doesn't count)?

Not sure yet if this is a pump and dump coin, or we should just buy it up and hold longterm. I don't have many coins, but just wondering how this will turn out.
2892  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Undervalued coins on: March 07, 2014, 05:16:22 AM
Complete waste of a thread to be honest. All you will get are people mentioning whatever coin they happen to have, and want to dump at a higher price.

I'm waiting for someone to mention taxicoin, fckbanks, cents, etc. and how they are great deals right now... sure to go to the moon any second.
2893  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ██[MZC] MazaCoin - National Currency - now @ RussiaToday, Independent, Telegraph on: March 06, 2014, 08:52:33 PM

Right, but when the whales are playing a new coin each week with 1000+ BTC volume... it IS the best gauge of what they want. Any "whales" in altcoins aren't long term investors, and exchanges don't want long-term investors, they make money off of active trading and volatility. An exchange profits most on hype, no doubt. I personally loved Cryptsy being more selective, as it sortof gave a coin a bit more permanence by getting Cryptsy's stamp of approval - but shit is wildly different from even December. The amount of coins, speculators, hardware... it's all exploding. Cryptsy is retooling. I agree it's gonna be shitty when it turns into several hundreds of coins and half of em are dead, but... Cryptsy is gonna pick that and more profit over prestige and less profit. I really think we're seeing the start of a major shift in Cryptsy's strategy, the days of careful consideration are over.

I understand Cryptsy's mindset in this. It's just that their exchange may be filled with dozens of rabbit/fckbanks/whatever coins if they go that route. I think they should consider a retirement plan for coins then, removing those that fall below a certain level of volume ... as they already have a ton of junk on there as it is.

It would be both amusing and disappointing to see a pattern of noname coins getting listed, up for a week or two as it's pumped and dumped... then desisted immediately after. But that would be better than seeing an exchange list of 300 coins, and 200+ of them are completely worthless.
2894  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ██[MZC] MazaCoin - National Currency - now @ RussiaToday, Independent, Telegraph on: March 06, 2014, 08:38:30 PM

They just started this today, and honestly they're probably just copying the altcoin exchanges like CR and Mintpal, cause they had donation voting and clearly made quite a few BTCs off it. If Cryptsy, or any of these sites, really wanted it a bit more fair, they'd not allow donations and just do the 3 votes/day type thing. But, it's business, Cryptsy wants BTC trade volume so they make more in trade fees, and what better way to gauge which coins the whales want to play then letting their BTC speak for them. It's a win-win for big players like whales and Cryptsy, the best the little guy can do is follow along.

Cryptsy used to be a bit more reserved with their coin additions, them accepting AUR last week was the fastest I've ever seen a coin get on there by far. Cryptsy sees the profit potential in speculative new coins and doesn't wanna lose out on all that profit, can't blame em, though I hope they don't turn into just another exchange - I kinda liked having a crown-jewel of exchanges in the altcoin market. It adds some interesting dynamics to trading and timing your strategy. Cryptsy being somewhat exclusive was a great source of volatility for a coin once it did hit, and as a daytrader, I love the waves. Wink

There are a couple of big dangers simply going the vote/buy votes/get listed method.

First off, nobody wants Cryptsy to turn into Cryptorush, with dozens of worthless coins on the exchange.

And the coin that wins the voting isn't necessarily the more worthy, nor would have the most volume over time. It's not the best way to gauge the coins that the whales want... it's the best way to gauge what coins the whales want to pump and dump... and then leave for dead.

I don't know why anyone would to pay to see a coin listed on cryptsy when it's a piece of shit for an exchange taking days to process deposits and withdrawals at times

I expect volume is the answer.

I just started with cryptos about 2 months ago, so am hardly an expert, but to me every single exchange is a piece of shit. It's the biggest problem with cryptos (as evidenced by Gox), and could potentially collapse the entire thing at some point.

2896  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ██[MZC] MazaCoin - National Currency - now @ RussiaToday, Independent, Telegraph on: March 06, 2014, 08:27:08 PM
I've always wondered how Cryptsy picked its coins, after seeing such oddball coins listed there.

I guess it's simply bribery? Although Cryptsy did it in a smart way, instead of a developer paying to get listed, they get everyone to pay to get a coin listed.

Same with other exchanges too?

Logically one would think the best coins only would get listed, but I guess that's never been the case.
2897  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Doge help on: March 06, 2014, 08:02:07 PM
Your error right from the start is the fact that you have not missed the bitcoin train.

Thus the remainder of your reasoning is irrelevant.

Bitcoin is currently still at an insanely low price, an excellent buying opportunity.

Any time you can buy them for less than US$1000 is a good deal but right now you can pick them up for way the heck less than that thus profit very quickly just in the recovery to $1000 then the regaining of the $1200+ previous peak let alone the long term continued growth.

-MarkM-

For large investments, you may be right. But the OP has 310K doge.

If he took out 50K, put it into bitcoin, waited for it to recover, what would he make? Like $15-20 over the course of several months? Not really worth it. Investing in bitcoin is fine for whales, but not us guppies.
2898  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Doge help on: March 06, 2014, 07:52:28 PM

Yea that's what im starting to do...I just joined this group like 30 minutes ago and have already gotten 30 doge for voicing my opinions! https://dogechat.net/   I think I may trade 50,000 back to btc and trade to MAZ as well.  how do you store your maz?

Right now, on cryptorush, which is really a horrible exchange. MintPal is the other option. I don't really care for either, but it's not being traded in a lot of places yet. Maybe Cryptsy tomorrow, but by then it'd be too late to buy in.

And yeah, if you do get any, hopefully you get it at a good price. I'm still not sure if it'll shoot up, or crash and burn, so I wouldn't go crazy with it.

As for freebies, some of the giveaways can be okay-ish, but usually they are for signing up for referrals. The doge faucets and tiny giveaways are not really worth the time to me. Look into a free trial of azure cloudmining and pick a cpu coin ... I got over 100 darkcoin out of it when I tried it.

Whenever they do this, I hope they give enough time beforehand in case we need to get btc from coinbase (or wherever). I am not sure if I'll invest or not, but it'll be annoying if I decide to take part, then coinbase holds up my coins for a week+, and then the 1st week bonus is over. They really should announce the sale a month in advance, with a set date ... that way, everyone can make an informed decision and get any funds moved over in time. So in other words, it's better to start this in April than a week or so from now.
