2901  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and me (Hal Finney) on: March 26, 2016, 10:18:33 AM
Hal Finney is a Bitcoin leyend. May he resurrect in the future with a bioengineered, tall, strong body in the future. If cryogenics is a success in a couple of decades (or centuries.. or thousands of years) I wonder how high the BTC will be by then. If Hal is still holding his coins, he will be the richest man on earth.
2902  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Could Bitcoin theoretically survive under manual mining only? on: March 26, 2016, 10:06:56 AM
Let's say a massive nuclear war happens, all mining power is dead and we can't start building it again for a while. Could people run the blockchain by doing the hashes manually like this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3dqhixzGVo

What about nodes? how do you check funds and validate transactions?

Can Bitcoin survive without computers existing?
2903  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In 2010/2011 Bitcoin was really exciting! on: March 25, 2016, 03:25:04 PM
I think it's still very exciting and it only gets more and more exciting. The blocksize thing, all the new technologies like segwit and all the new BIPs, all the big hype about halving... the future is very exciting. The only thing I miss from the past is not buying BTC before 2012, but we have still time for bigger moons in next years.
2904  Economy / Gambling / Re: Most popular gambling sites? on: March 25, 2016, 03:09:18 PM
PrimeDice is probably the most famous gambling site of all time for Bitcoin, it has been running for years and the owner did some of the greatest sig campaings ever paying a lot of BTC to the community.
SatoshiDice is also very famous, but I would rather use PrimeDice, or other good new sites.
2905  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: is gambling fix your life? or wreck your life? on: March 25, 2016, 02:55:04 PM
Self control is the most important aspect in gambling, if you know when to stop you shall reach greatness, or at least not become insane at the fact that you lose a ton of money then you want to take a revenge against your bad luck, this creates a non stop betting spree and you end up losing a ton of money in most stupid of ways.
2906  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: If you were rich, would you still gamble? on: March 25, 2016, 02:29:31 PM
The main problem with rich people is that they don't have any fear about losing any of their wealth because they see their wealth as an endless source of money that doesn't' stop generating more and more money. This is how a lot of rich celebrities go bankrupt, but if they know what they are doing like Mayweather they will never stop being rich, in fact they only get richer.
2907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 3 confirmations in 10mins with minimal fees!!! on: March 25, 2016, 01:58:02 PM
3 confirmations in 10 minutes with such a small fee. That's pretty impressive, I think you probably got lucky though. I always pay above the recommended fee & most times don't get as many confirmations in such little time.

I have never paid above recommended fee, and I never suffered from any delays except that one day where someone was intentionally attacking Bitcoin with a ridiculous amount of spam, and even then I just had to wait some extra time and the money eventually appeared... I was never worried about losing money which is what matters.
2908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: These are the biggest names in bitcoin and blockchain tech on: March 25, 2016, 01:56:24 PM
For the most important names are the people making the most important BIP and coding work on actual Bitcoin... all those startups have yet to come up with something that can impress me.

I liked the effort of stuff like Trezor, but other than that I can't think of anything that comes close to the work being done by Core devs and in general contributors to the actual code.
2909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: /btc is full of hypocrites or shills on: March 25, 2016, 01:40:45 PM
Yeah it's getting out of hand. All /btc/ is is just a FUD hate central about Core and Blockstream, they spread half truths so casuals think Bitcoin Classic is the second coming of Jesus Christ that will save Bitcoin from problems that don't really exist.
2910  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can someone hack an encrypted wallet.dat? on: March 24, 2016, 01:41:02 PM
I guess the encryption for the wallet.dat is SHA256 like the hashing algo, in this case it would be freaking impossible to bruteforce even with a supercomputer. I think a 12 character password would be enough to make it impossible.
SHA256 is a hashing algorithm, not an encryption algorithm and cannot be used for encrypting stuff.

The Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file is encrypted using AES-256, which as of now, has no known vulnerabilities. The password itself is not used as the encryption key but is instead run through SHA256 and a couple other algorithms to stretch the key and produce something more secure.

As for brute forcing a wallet, it is possible and has been done before. Software does exist to attempt to brute force the password to a wallet.dat file but they are only effective if the password is short and simple. Brute forcing only works well if the password is weak or if the attacker knows part of your password. There is in fact a service to recover the password to your wallet if you happen to forget the password but remember parts of it or know what it could potentially be.

So to prevent brute forcing from being successful, use a strong password and to prevent people from stealing that password and your wallet.dat, make sure you have a good, up to date antivirus.
Yeah I confused terms. I think AES256 is what Julian Assange used to encrypt all of his data that cointained all the unreleased leaks just in case he got assassinated, so someone that he trusts would release the password to the world when they kill him, so it's that trusted. I wonder if we will ever get the password to see how it looked like.
2911  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: If you were rich, would you still gamble? on: March 24, 2016, 01:24:41 PM
Yeah im jealous of all those celebrities making a ton of money daily just because they are famous. Even guys like Deadmau5 can get a bunch of cash out of an ATM and spend an entire day gambling in LA for the sake of it. Floyd Mayweather makes 7 digits monthly without moving a fingertip, so imagine how much he can gamble with with 0 risk.
2912  Other / Off-topic / Re: What is your plan to get rich with Bitcoin? on: March 24, 2016, 01:07:42 PM
A lot of people holding decent amounts of BTC like 10+, will regret a lot not holding long term. Chances are most of those people will become yet another "could-have-been-a-millonaire" cases, because they will sell 5 to 10 years before in the next pump that looks to tempting not to sell, only to realize 10 years later they could have been rich.
2913  Economy / Gambling / Re: try your chess skills for bitcoin on: March 24, 2016, 12:59:29 PM
play chess for bitcoins, better then betting
chess4coin.com

Is the page skill working? I'm very sceptical when it comes to chess for BTC, mainly because of bot problems, but I like chess, so I usually try the sites, but after trying your site I got to an error page, saying "SORRY". Is there a problem?

Yes it doesn't work for me either. WOnder if it was ever up and running or did they lose their hot wallet due to bot scams.
It was meant to happen sooner or later. All those Bitcoin games end up bankrupt because they never put enough effort. To maintain such a service you need to put a lot of attention and keep it up to date pretty much daily, not release it and forget about it and hope it keeps making money automatically.
2914  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can someone hack an encrypted wallet.dat? on: March 24, 2016, 12:47:09 PM
Hey,

I was just wondering, is it possible for someone to hack an encrypted wallet.dat

Thanks

certainly, especially if it was encrypted with a weak password.
EDIT: I don't know how fast a wallet.dat bruteforcer will work, but it's defenatly doable.

If you chose a strong password (+16 characters, using lower case, upper case, numbers and symbols, nothing from a dictionary) it's almost impossible.

I guess the encryption for the wallet.dat is SHA256 like the hashing algo, in this case it would be freaking impossible to bruteforce even with a supercomputer. I think a 12 character password would be enough to make it impossible.
2915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is Consensus? on: March 24, 2016, 12:33:53 PM
The whole https://www.reddit.com/r/btc & https://forum.bitcoin.com/ are now asking for this answer.

Those sites are full of paid Classic shills and average joes that have absolutely no say in a matter as complex as scaling Bitcoin. It's sad that those places have become a trollfest. /r/btc started as a way to talk about everything Bitcoin including the hard fork attempts, and it has ended up a total mess.
2916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should there be a GUI for Bitcoin core? on: March 24, 2016, 12:25:01 PM
what ? Bitcoin core do have a GUI  and it's not hard or complex to use at all .

Well I don't have a problem using it, and I quite like the layout. But this guy seemed to think that there were too many options, and no icons to simplify things. I was thinking of the user who has trouble moving around on YouTube, but could be a Bitcoin user. Maybe we should discourage them then. Smiley

Too many options? In my opinion Bitcoin Core GUI is pretty limited in options, specially the way you store receiving and sending addresses. You can't even order them in order of creation, or make groups to store the addresses... it's a very raw looking GUI. I hope it gets better in the future. But it definitely has a GUI.
2917  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin make Banks disappear? on: March 24, 2016, 12:20:43 PM
It's immposible to Bitcoin disappear Banks, Because we do not know if Bitcoin Did not last long. Maybe bitcoin can disappear.

Unfortunately, yes, it is almost impossible to make banks disappear because of bitcoin.. Banks would always cope up with the situation and adopt new technology to be functional in the modern time..

The only reason banks would survive is because banks are backed up by government violence (army). Bitcoin is an external agent that they cannot control so it's not on their interest that a massive support arises. If Bitcoin goes mainstream they will attack it, that's why Bitcoin would die a day after if we increase the blocksize and nodes become centralized (and that's why there are clear agendas to raise the block size)
2918  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why is gambling so addicting? on: March 23, 2016, 06:48:53 PM
The most adictive gambling are te progressive slots, it's basically all I play lately if I want to gamble some extra BTC money that I may have and I don't plan to hold or invest. You start with a little bit and go on a rollercoaster with ups and downs, sometimes I was up 1 BTC from 0.1 BTC but ended up with 0 because I was too greedy.
2919  Economy / Gambling / Re: try your chess skills for bitcoin on: March 23, 2016, 06:30:41 PM
This would be a really neat idea if you could be certain that you weren't playing against bots. Then again, you could build in some protection against that.

I thought this was a multiplayer real player vs real player game, not a real player vs bot game. It would be really cool to have a PvP chess game. Honestly playing against the machine is not what I would call fun, specially since you never know the skill of the machine when you are betting money. It could be rigged. I would trust playing vs a stranger, or vs a friend if you are paranoid, that would be more fun.
2920  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: If you were rich, would you still gamble? on: March 23, 2016, 06:24:05 PM
I would gamble.. when I see all those rich people having a fun time gambling stupid money on sports it looks like so much fun. Guys like Floyd Mayweather make bets against his other rich friends and have a laugh at the results. Since they bet tons of money (to them its not much) if they win they can see massive profits.
