Germany shocked by Cologne New Year gang assaults on women

The mayor of Cologne has summoned police for crisis talks after about 80 women reported sexual assaults and muggings by men on New Year's Eve.

The scale of the attacks on women at the city's central railway station has shocked Germany. About 1,000 drunk and aggressive young men were involved.

City police chief Wolfgang Albers called it "a completely new dimension of crime". The men were of Arab or North African appearance, he said.

Women were also targeted in Hamburg.

But the Cologne assaults - near the city's iconic cathedral - were the most serious, German media report. At least one woman was raped, and many were groped.

Most of the crimes reported to police were robberies. A volunteer policewoman was among those sexually molested.

Germany's New Year shock - by Damien McGuinness, BBC News Berlin

The pretty Christmas market and medieval setting may look idyllic, but at Christmas and New Year the area around Cologne Cathedral is a notorious danger zone when it comes to pickpockets and theft.

Now the sexual harassment, and in one case rape, of dozens of women has shocked Germany.

What is particularly disturbing is that the attacks appear to have been organised. Around 1,000 young men arrived in large groups, seemingly with the specific intention of carrying out attacks on women.

Police in Hamburg are now reporting similar incidents on New Year's Eve in the party area of St Pauli. One politician says this is just the tip of the iceberg.

And there are real concerns about what will happen in February when the drunken street-parties of carnival season kick off.

Cologne will stage carnival events in February, with hundreds of thousands of revellers expected in the streets, as on New Year's Eve.

The police chief said "the assailants' behaviour is a real concern for me, also because of the carnival".

Police were deployed outside the central station because of the crowds on New Year's Eve, but failed to spot the many attacks, according to reports. There are also fears that a number of women did not report assaults.

'Monstrous' assaults

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker said the attacks were "monstrous". "We cannot allow this to become a lawless area," she said, insisting that visitors could not come to the city fearing attack.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas tweeted that "we won't tolerate these abhorrent assaults on women - all those responsible must be brought to justice".

One man described how his partner and 15-year-old daughter were surrounded by an enormous crowd outside the station and he was unable to help. "The attackers grabbed her and my partner's breasts and groped them between their legs."

A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English. "They were trying to hug us, kiss us. One man stole my friend's bag," she told the BBC. "Another tried to get us into his 'private taxi'. I've been in scary and even life-threatening situations and I've never experienced anything like that."

The justice minister warned against linking the crimes to the issue of migrants and refugees.

Germany saw a record influx of migrants in 2015, which provoked an intense debate on immigration and marches by the anti-Islam Pegida movement.

Mr Maas said "the law does not discriminate regarding a person's origin or passport. All are equal before the law".

Cologne news website Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger says the suspects were already known to police because of frequent pickpocketing in and around Cologne central station.

Wider problem

In Hamburg several women told police that gangs of men had molested and robbed them on New Year's Eve on the Reeperbahn - a street known for its boisterous night life.

Some similar attacks were reported in Stuttgart.

A policeman who was outside Cologne station during the New Year's Eve trouble told the city's Express news website that he had detained eight suspects. "They were all asylum seekers, carrying copies of their residence certificates," he said.

However, there was no official confirmation that asylum seekers had been involved in the violence. Commentators in Germany were quick to urge people not to jump to conclusions.

German n-tv news says Cologne police are considering calling in reinforcements from other parts of Germany and installing extra surveillance cameras, with telescopic lenses.

"That changed me, that day," he said, after being introduced by Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son was killed in the shooting. "My hope earnestly has been that it would change the country."

After that tragedy, the Democratic president failed to persuade Congress to toughen U.S. gun laws. He has blamed lawmakers for being in the thrall of the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby group.

He said Americans need to be "just as passionate" as the NRA in changing gun laws, but acknowledged it won't happen during his final year in office.

Obama laid out executive action he is taking to require more gun sellers to get licenses and more gun buyers to undergo background checks.

Under the changes, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will issue guidelines intended to narrow exceptions to a system that requires sellers to check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine whether buyers have criminal records, are charged with crimes or have mental health conditions that would bar them from owning a gun.

Any changes to gun rules in America are fraught with political risk. The U.S. Constitution's 2nd Amendment gives Americans the right to have arms, a right that is fiercely defended.

The stocks of gunmakers Smith & Wesson Holding Corp and Sturm Ruger & Co Inc have climbed since the announcement. On Tuesday morning, Smith & Wesson jumped was up 10 percent to $25.58 a share and Sturm Ruger was up more than 6 percent at $65.46.

Legal challenges to the changes are expected and Republican presidential candidates have promised to reverse his order if they win the White House. But Obama, entering his eighth and last year in office, has said his measures are within his authority and consistent with the Constitution.

EOs are as good as the next president let them fly. The rodeo clown does not understand he is not a king, but a lame duck president. No amount of fake tears and flipping the bird on live TV will change that.

Donald Trump dominates first national poll of 2016

More than half of Donald Trump’s supporters say they are strongly committed to voting for him, according to the results of the latest NBC News/SurveyMonkey online tracking poll released Tuesday, the first national poll of 2016.

Overall, the Manhattan mogul commanded the support of 35 percent of the Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters who were surveyed over the past week, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz came in second place with 18 percent support.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio earned 13 percent, followed by 9 percent for Ben Carson, 6 percent for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 4 percent for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and 3 percent for Carly Fiorina, according to the full results shared first on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Among those pledging their allegiance to Trump, 51 percent said they would “absolutely” vote for him, while 33 percent indicated a “large chance.” Meanwhile, just 14 percent said the odds were merely 50-50, and only 2 percent said there was little chance they would support him. By comparison, 36 percent of Cruz voters indicated absolute loyalty, with 49 percent saying there is a greater chance, while just 26 percent of Rubio voters said they would “absolutely” vote for their candidate and 49 percent again saying there is a large likelihood that they would.

Along gender lines, Trump took the support of 39 percent of men and 29 percent of women, leading with both groups. Cruz earned support of 21 percent of men and 13 percent of women, while Rubio won the support of 13 percent of men and 14 percent of women.

Trump also leads the way among those describing themselves as white evangelicals (35 percent to Cruz’s 21 percent) and those calling themselves very conservative (35 percent to Cruz’s 30 percent).

Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders 53 percent to 36 percent, with former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley earning 2 percent and 8 percent saying they are not sure.

The poll was conducted online Dec. 28-Jan. 3, surveying 3,181 registered voters among a sample of 3,700. The margin of error for 949 registered Republican voters is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points, while among 1,060 Democrats the margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

Obama’s Gun-Control Plan Includes Gun-Ban For Some Social Security Beneficiaries

The White House released a fact-sheet Jan. 4 which previews the executive gun control Obama will unveil Tuesday and one aspect of the new controls is the inclusion of “information from the Social Security Administration in the background check system about beneficiaries who are prohibited from possessing a firearm.”

On July 18 Breitbart News reported on Obama’s push to ban gun-possession for Social Security beneficiaries who are believed incapable of handling their own finances.

At that same time, the Los Angeles Times reported that a ban was being put together “outside of public view,” so all the details were not known. But the Times did  know that the ban would cover those who are unable to manage their own affairs for a multitude of reasons–from “subnormal intelligence or mental illness” to “incompetency,” an unspecified “condition,” or “disease.”

The ban pertaining to Social Security beneficiaries is now tucked into the “mental health” aspects of Obama’s executive gun control.

This crowd shot from Donald Trump’s Massachusetts rally is absolutely mind-boggling

Donald Trump went to Lowell, Mass. — a town about five miles south of the New Hampshire border — for one of his now trademark big-arena rallies on Monday night. This is what the crowd looked like per WaPo's Jenna Johnson.

The building — named after the late Massachusetts Sen. Paul Tsongas (D) — holds 8,000 people, and local officials were estimating that it was filled to capacity or beyond. That is a MASSIVE amount of people — especially considering that the high temperature in Lowell yesterday was 29 degrees and Trump's rally didn't start until the evening.

This is what the line to get in looked like.
https://twitter.com/rsobeyLSun/status/684129192850681857

I know that crowd size is an uncertain indicator in politics. After all, if crowd size at rallies was determinative, Bernie Sanders not Hillary Clinton would be the heavy favorite to be the Democratic presidential nominee.  That skepticism of crowd size goes double for Trump since there are plenty of people who go to see him simply for the spectacle or to be near a celebrity, not because they have any designs on voting for him.

And yet, the willingness of so many people to wait so long in such cold temperatures simply for the chance to see Trump speak would suggest that the idea that his supporters won't be the sort of people to sit through the long caucus process of Iowa or turn out to vote in the frigid cold of New Hampshire might be misguided.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told supporters that the recent diplomatic fallout between Iran and Saudi Arabia is over oil at a Mass. rally on Jan. 4. He said that after the Iran nuclear deal, Iran 'got' Iraq, and was now after Saudi Arabia. (Reuters)

Ditto the idea that Trump's bubble would burst or the ardor with which his backers regard him would fade. The Iowa caucuses are in 27 days. New Hampshire votes in 35 days.  The time is now, and people are still showing up in droves to see — and cheer — Trump.

Crowds like the one in Lowell on Monday should make clear to the last few lingering doubters that the Trump phenomenon isn't going away as voters begin the process of picking a Republican presidential nominee. Hell, he might even be getting stronger.

“Sh*tty Christians”: Militant Muslim youths storm a Christmas service at a Church in Mönchengladbach, Germany

This is Europe, not the Middle East. *Crickets chirping* in parliaments, political chambers and newsrooms across the world.

Will the islamofauxbia never end? Meanwhile, across the pond, the intrepid FBI is chasing down the bacon-bandito.

“Sh*tty Christians”: Belligerent Muslim youths storm a Christmas service at a Church in Mönchengladbach

»Scheiß Christen«: Randalierende Muslime stürmen in Mönchengladbach eine Kirche – Kopp Online

Only one of the youths was even 14 years old, the other 5 were just young children. Nonetheless, they behaved like adult radical extremists. The young Muslims stormed the Rheydter Marien Church in Mönchengladbach on Christmas Eve. They interrupted the manger festival by running through the halls during the service, all the while yelling and cursing at churchgoers saying, “Shitty Christians!” And what happened after that? Not much beyond a small article in a local paper.

Imagine it were the other way around: wild Christian children storming into a mosque and abusing praying Muslims! 50 minutes later there would have been an emergency news break during the daily television programming…special edition pages in FAZ and the Süddeutsche Zeitung would have gone to press.

    …

The  reflex of the mainstream media? It was Muslims so all is silent…there were only a few who showed civil courage in the church. One of the church members nabbed two of the children in the heat of the moment. Later a police detail released the two to their parents at a nearby McDonalds.

The pastor Manfred Riethdorf (Photo: right) doesn’t want to let the matter go so lightly, and files a formal complaint against the 14-yr-old for disturbance of the peace. This is likely because he doesn’t believe it was just a stupid youthful prank.

“Shitty Christians.” And especially at Christmas? How do these young Muslims know what their actions will invoke? Their parents or other adults must have infected them with this knowledge.

If adult Muslims had stormed the church, they would not have been let off so easily without punishment. Against minor children one cannot do much. Is this all a coincidence or were the children sent like an instrument of religious extremism?

Upon direct questioning, the police refused to confirm the religious background of the young offenders. The pastor himself energetically replied: “I explained clearly to them, how one should act in a church. Possibly tomorrow I will try to establish contact with their parents to discuss this event with them and their children.”

The police have not shown as much initiative. The relationship between Christians and Muslims in Mönchengladbach is tense, otherwise this would not have happened, but up until now the media have still not reported on the event.

Official Muslim leaders have said nothing and the local politicians are silent. No one wants to throw oil on a fire.

Silence is falsely understood consideration. To talk about the issue would call integration politics into question. There would be an international media echo if Germany tried to discuss (such behavior) of Muslims gone wild.

One must also see: He who presses (the issue), will confirm the fears of “concerned citizens.” They feel that life with Muslims in Germany has become more difficult, but one does not talk about it. Now so called “concerned citizens” see their worries again confirmed.
(Note – “concerned citizens” or “besorgte Bürger” is a buzz word in Germany for right-wing extremists)

Another article (here) suggests that Pastor Riethdorf suggests this incident should lead to a community culture of discussion.

Yes, more inter-faith dialogue. That’s the ticket.

Bernie Sanders: Bill Clinton’s Sexual History Not Fair Game

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says attacks against former President Bill Clinton’s sexual history are not fair game for politicians looking to defeat his wife and Democratic primary front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“I think, you know, we have enormous problems facing this country, and I think we got more things to worry about than Bill Clinton’s sexual life,” Sanders said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump has recently made the sexual allegations against Clinton an issue in the White House race.

Sanders said Trump would be better off focusing on serious issues facing the nation, like climate change.

Since you haven't included an opinion on this, should I assume you disagree with it?  Sounds quite sensible to me.  You actually do have larger problems than a former president's sex life.  What exactly are you taking issue with?  Or is it just that you're so desperate to smear the guy with something because you fear his chances of winning, you've taken to posting any headline that mentions his name and anything to do with sex?

No, I don't deny it.
As I don't deny the genius behind previous alike projects.
I don't say every coder or even a genius coder is an activist. Still I believe some may be giving second thoughts about what they are doing.
Computers are precise machines, they don't spit the data "we want", they can be bend to ignore much of related data and provide false results. Not the computer's fault.

But... That was my point, my only point. Garbage in. Garbage out. It has nothing to do with the logical mind of a coder. A good coder will produce faster results with less buggy apps. The point is not the logical talent of the coder but the purpose of the codes...

If I put a seed in your mind in the form of a "What if...", you could visualize a solution without starting typing one line. For that seed to grow, first it would mean the "What if.." is an attractive proposition, something worth your effort to spend 1000s of hours coding for. You will do it for free or for little money because you believe in the seed. Or you do it anyway because I will pay you a lot, a lot of money to code the seed. That is the difference between a coder and an activist coder like yourself.

Democrats unsure Hillary Clinton can beat Donald Trump in general election

Democratic Party activists are conflicted over whether Hillary Clinton can take on Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in the general election, with some fearing she provides too much ammunition for the flamboyant businessman’s style of attack.

While Mr. Trump is leading the national polls and calling the shots in what’s become a circuslike GOP primary season, Mrs. Clinton tops a sedentary Democratic race with two other opponents respectfully nipping at her without doing much damage — and party stalwarts are happy to have it that way.

“I hear a lot of people saying, ‘You know, I’ve watched the Democratic debates and the Republican debates, and they’re so different. I’m sure glad I’m on the Democratic side and they’re talking about the issues. They don’t always agree with one another, but they explain why,’” said David Allen, a Democratic Party leader in Barnstead, New Hampshire. “Democrats have resolved themselves to not go into a circus and tear one another down.”

But Mr. Allen said he does worry about how the eventual Democratic nominee will stand up to the sort of withering barbs Mr. Trump has dished out to his own side.

“We’re going to start to have to look at how the [Democratic] candidates play against Donald Trump, because he’s certainly holding onto his lead in the Republican Party, and he has certainly played the Republican candidates in a way that has hurt some of his opposition, and I think people are going to start asking, ‘All right, who’s going to stand up under his type of campaigning?’” Mr. Allen said. “If Bernie [Sanders] is the candidate, Trump will play up how un-American socialism is, and if Hillary gets it, he will dig up everything in the past 40 years and use it — and won’t mince words in using it.”

Other activists say there’s a sense that, while it’s Mrs. Clinton’s turn to run, there’s no swell of on-the-ground enthusiasm for her to carry the party’s banner into the general election.

“I don’t think the [Democratic primary] race has generated all that much intensity,” said Ron Romine, chairman of the Spartanburg, South Carolina, Democrats, who is neutral in the race. “I don’t feel like anywhere in the state there’s all that much passion. The usual suspects will go out and vote, but there’s not an intensity that you might think there should be with the first woman.

“Hillary is so familiar, she’s been around forever. She has her supporters, and they’re going to go out and vote for her, so there’s not a whole lot to parse out,” he said. “You either like her or you’re not enthusiastic.”

Mr. Trump already has started taking aim at Mrs. Clinton, just as some activists had feared.

At a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday, the billionaire real estate mogul declared “war” on the Clintons as he explained why he wouldn’t attack Mrs. Clinton as “low-energy” — the term he used to devastate his GOP rival, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

“I just don’t like to use the same thing twice on one of my enemies, because I consider them enemies,” Mr. Trump said. “We view this as war. Don’t we view this as war? It’s war, it’s war!”

Bothered by Mrs. Clinton’s accusation that he has a “penchant for sexism,” Mr. Trump continued to attack her husband, former President Bill Clinton, saying he was “one of the great abusers [of women] of the world.”

The Clinton camp this week said they would “stand up” to Mr. Trump. Deputy Communications Director Christina Reynolds said in a statement that “Hillary Clinton will stand up to him, as she has from the beginning,” citing Mr. Trump’s “demeaning” remarks about “women, immigrants, Asian-Americans, Muslims, the disabled or hard-working Americans,” adding that he has “pushed around nearly all of his fellow Republicans.”

Mrs. Clinton’s own supporters seem unfazed by the threat of Mr. Trump.

“I expected that to come up no matter who the [Republican] candidate was [and] the Bill Clinton past — I’m not the least bit surprised,” said Bonnie Chehames, who is campaigning for Mrs. Clinton in New Hampshire. “I can’t imagine Trump beating Hillary Clinton, and I don’t care what the polls say. The Republican Party will be fractured if Trump’s nominated, and that’s good for the Democrats.”

Not all coders care, know or examine ideologies. Whatever vars they're ignorant of they will not sum, making their code incomplete. By definition we aren't activists, but our job makes us better on analyzing data and when we become activists you get things like 3DES, AES, SHA, PGP, Bitcoin...
About your picture, those guys are playing some CS-like game, if you notice they've their hands on the mouse, a thing we avoid to do, it's unpractical to code.

Let me give you another image for you to analyzing its data then, with no mice and guys dressed as soldiers in it

The data can be whatever you want the computer to spit out. If you are an activist you create bitcoin, if you work for the nsa you create stuxnet.

As a coder can you deny the genius of the team behind stuxnet?

Should I ask them then?

They don't seam to be coding. Coding != using the computer for something.

Can a computer be coded for compassion or free will, away from the ideology or the "logic" of its programmer, as a true independent entity?
The computer will always be the puppet of its master coders, coders getting a paycheck to execute orders to solve a problem, no matter what it is.

That same "logic" is what made the climate computer model so... flexible. As long as you have a power, the coders will execute what that power wants.
